I don’t think it’s a controversial opinion to state that, of all the RoboCop movies, only Paul Verhoeven’s original 1987 film deserves to be called a classic. However, a lot of us have always thought that the ultra-violent sequel, RoboCop 2, was better than its reputation suggests. I know from our Original Video on the movie that it has more than a few fans, so it’s exciting to reveal that RoboCop 2 is finally getting a 4K Blu-ray release via Scream Factory.
The news was broken by our friends at Blu-ray.com. The company has also licensed José Padilha’s 2014 remake for release. No RoboCop 3 yet. I suppose the company just decided to let that one go, and you can’t really blame them, as it just might be one of the worst sequels of all time.
No news yet on whether RoboCop 2 will contain any special features.

It is 36 years since RoboCop blasted its way onto UK cinema screens and made a splash of epic, gruesome, proportions. With that a cult-like following is born and the film’s influence cannot be overstated.
RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is an incredibly methodical ‘making of’ documentary that has now set the standard and an exceptionally high one, no less. It comes as no surprise with the success of their recent projects which include Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story and Pennywise: The Story of It.
The documentary oozes passion and is testament to its directors Christopher Griffiths and Eastwood Allen clear love for the film in a project that has been over seven years in the making.
This four part series spans over more than four hours is nothing short of a triumph, it is forensic in its analysis and brings to life the chaos of the RoboCop shoot and does so brilliantly.

Ok, I’ve thought about this long and hard, discussed with my local priest and therapist, and after much internal strife, I’ve decided it’s time. You hear a lot about rip-offs for franchises, particularly the big ones. We have Jaws rip-offs, Exorcist rip-offs, Halloween rip-offs, and more. What you don’t hear a lot about, and good lord do they exist, are the multiple rip-offs of Gremlins. Gremlins got its own incredible sequel and then finally this year its very own animated show that is… fine… it’s fine. But with Gremlins profitability came the clones. With a love of cinema woven into its DNA, The Monster Squad helped indoctrinate ’80s kids to the classic monsters. The generation that grew up watching it on home video and HBO look back on the 1987 film with the same reverence director Fred Dekker had for the Universal monster movies, and now they’re passing it down in a similar fashion. There’s no better way to introduce the next generation than with the new 4K edition.
Conceived as “The Little Rascals meets the Universal Monsters,” the cleverly-plotted film clocks in at a tight 82 minutes. The punchy script by Dekker and Shane Black doesn’t have an ounce of fat on it, save for the casual homophobia, misogyny, and body shaming of the time. Drawing inspiration from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, human characters offer well-placed levity and a bevy of memorable one-liners, but the monsters are played straight.

The fan-funded, four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is available to watch through the Screambox streaming service, and has also received a Blu-ray release. As fans watch the docuseries, it seems the most popular, standout moment is a sequence where weapons master Randy E. Moore talks about interacting with RoboCop star Peter Weller while holding a stack of Oreos. You can watch that clip in this embed:

RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop documentary is getting sequels that cover RoboCop 2, 3, & TV series
The fan-funded, four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop was acquired by Cinedigm last year, and the company gave it both a Blu-ray release (you can pick up a copy Here) and a streaming release, through the Screambox streaming service. Directed by Chris Griffiths and Eastwood Allen, RoboDoc focuses primarily on the first RoboCop, but does give a nod to RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3. And if any fans were disappointed that the sequels didn’t get enough coverage, the makers of the documentary have shared some very cool news: RoboDoc is getting its own sequels, which will cover RoboCop 2, RoboCop 3, and even the RoboCop TV series!
The first follow-up will be called RoboDoc Season 2: RoboCop 2, and it’s already expected to be released sometime in late 2024. Then sometime not too far down the line we’ll get RoboDoc Season 3: RoboCop 3 and the TV Series.

The first-person-shooter video game RoboCop: Rogue City, which features the return of Peter Weller as the iconic hero RoboCop, is set to be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store this Thursday, November 2nd. To remind us the game is right around the corner, a new trailer has arrived online – but this one only features a brief glimpse of the game. Instead, it’s mostly a live-action short in which we see RoboCop out on patrol. You can watch this live-action trailer in the embed above.
Peter Weller provides the voice of RoboCop in the video game, but of course they didn’t make the 76-year-old put on a costume or sit in the makeup chair for the live-action trailer.

RoboCop: Rogue City arrives later this week, and in anticipation, Teyon has released a new live-action trailer for Rogue City that sees RoboCop ride out once again into the streets of Old Detroit to combat crime. The trailer is admittedly a bit more lighthearted than the grittiness that one would expect from RoboCop, and it’s not Derek Mears under the helmet this time or Peter Weller, but hey, it’s fun!
The story for Rogue City takes place between RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, and sees RoboCop (played once again by Peter Weller) caught up in the gang violence in Old Detroit. Making matters worse is that the gangs have decided to throw in with the “new guy in town”. Previously unknown to the police, this new figure is behind a rash of disappearances, a variety of brazen crimes of all kinds and the trafficking of Nuke.

Pete Kozachik, a visual effects and stop-motion artist whose work on acclaimed animated films by Tim Burton, Henry Selick and others brought recognition and an Oscar nomination, died Sept. 12 at his California home in the Bay Area following a years-long battle with aphasia and primary progressive aphasia. We’ll have to wait a little longer before we can start serving the public trust in RoboCop: Rogue City. Developer Teyon took to X/Twitter to announce that the game will be pushed back from its original September release for PC and consoles to a more definitive November 2.
This delay comes after Teyon had shown off a new gameplay trailer, along with several minutes of gameplay footage, at Gamescom last week. Furthermore, no mention of the delay was made last week. The developer also didn’t explain the reasoning for the delay, though given how stacked September and October are with highly-anticipated titles, it’s probably not a stretch to have that as a reason for Rogue City‘s delay.

Our friends at Bloody Disgusting gave us the heads-up that a collector’s edition Blu-ray release of RoboDoc is available for pre-order through Amazon, and there’s also a steelbook that’s exclusive to Walmart. (It can be pre-ordered through the Walmart website.)
Coming to us from Dead Mouse Productions Ltd and Cult Screenings UK Ltd, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is a fully independent retrospective into the making of RoboCop and its cultural impact over the last 30 years.

Thirteen months have gone by since we saw the trailer for the first-person-shooter video game RoboCop: Rogue City, which features the return of Peter Weller as the iconic hero RoboCop. The game is scheduled to be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store this September – and with that month right around the corner, a new gameplay trailer has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.
RoboCop: Rogue City was developed by Teyon, the company that was behind Terminator: Resistance and Rambo: The Video Game. It has been said that the game will “combine first-person shooter gameplay with exploration of Detroit and multiple-choice dialogue”. The game has the following synopsis: Crime runs rampant as Detroit lies on the edge of ruin, with people fighting for scraps as others live extravagant lives of luxury. Control of the Detroit Police Department is...

The eagerly-anticipated RoboCop documentary RoboDoc hits streaming service Screambox & VOD, on August 29th.
It is over 30 years since the Paul Verhoeven classic blasted its way onto the big screen leaving a trail of body parts and blood. Directed by Eastwood Allen and Christopher Griffiths, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop will showcase the chaotic production of the first movie and more. This is part one of what will be a 4-part limited series spanning over four hours.
Though the streaming release is U.S only, Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment have acquired UK distribution rights with a release expected by the end of the year.
In what promises to be the most in-depth insight into the making of the films as well as TV series it features over 60 interviews with cast and crew including Paul Verhoeven, Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith, Ronny Cox as well as Phil Tippett.
Initially Peter Weller was not set...

Intro: Just like any successful movie franchise from any particular decade, there’s one unwritten rule; if it’s much loved, generated enough in box office returns, and is clearly still a relevant IP, you know what to eventually expect. Yup, that’s right movie-fans – a remake! Love em’ or loathe em’ they’re not going away anytime soon, and sometimes they can not only offer a fascinating take on the original movie but also enhance the legacy by bringing in a whole new audience. 1982’s The Thing is an incredible remake of the 1951 original, along with similarly effective fellow horror remake The Fly from 1986. Also, more recently we’ve had gems such as Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, the hugely popular A Star is Born and, of course, The Wicker Man. Okay, maybe not that particular example, but Nicolas Cage randomly punching people in a bear suit has to hold some value to movie-fans,...

Intro: There’s a scene, roughly half way through the much maligned Robocop 3, in which the eponymous law enforcer is malfunctioning, battered and bruised, which is almost the perfect metaphor for the franchise at this point. As outlined in our previous video in this series, Robocop 2 may have had its fair share of issues, but alongside the annoying characters and a frustratingly dumbed down hero, it’s actually a pretty decent movie. It was just nowhere near the sequel it could so easily have been. Which leads us to part three, which is, well…Where do we start? Historically, in the wonderful world of movies in which we all often reside, part three’s, and later sequels to popular franchises, have that nagging tendency to Look like they should, but for the most part, this familiarity leads to something so very, very…Wrong! A good franchise is hard to kill. Bad ones, like the seven-film torture device Police Academy, can be even harder to exterminate. But sometimes doomed series are finally put out of their misery. Up on the shelf they go, doomed to a future of languishing on lists like this one.
The murder weapon is usually money. More specifically, the lack thereof. A big enough failure means a franchise won’t get another chance to pull their act together, and the most spectacular bombs get to live on as warnings to future film students. Even more interesting are the ones that aren’t total flops, the movies that maybe made a profit, but one so small or negligible that their studios decided to put that old franchise to bed, anyway. Here are 15 movies that killed their respective franchises for good.

When you’ve managed to catch lightning in a bottle once, with one of the most revered, beloved, exciting, brutal and iconic movies as 1987’s Robocop, how on earth do you follow it up? Well, it appears from revisiting the much maligned sequel for this retrospective, you make it louder, flashier and, well, a Lot dumber. That’s not to say that Robocop 2 is necessarily a bad movie, it’s just that it had some very broad, metallic, shoulders to follow. So, yes folk, we’re traveling back to dystopian Detroit for the sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s classic original to see what the late, great The Empire Strikes Back director, Irvin Kerschner could pull out of the bag for the much anticipated sequel. When trying to replace a director as ‘edgy’ and formidable as Verhoeven it was certainly wise to pick somebody who had, arguably, delivered The greatest...

Ahead of its September release, IGN has posted a new hands-on preview for Teyon’s upcoming RoboCop: Rogue City. In addition to 10 minutes of gunplay and blood for longtime fans, IGN has also dropped new details on the first-person shooter that will no doubt please longtime fans.
Among the new details, Rogue City will take place between RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, and will consist of a campaign lasting between 20 to 30 hours, with multiple endings and side quests. The game will also allow players the option to uphold the law in a more peaceful manner in certain situations, or go in Auto 9 blazing.
So yes, it won’t all be a “shoot first, ask questions later” affair, as you will have to do some actual police work in some situations by gathering clues and conducting investigations. Furthermore, you’ll have to serve the public trust, which is where the game’s dialogue trees come in.

Exclusive: MGM’s extensive film & TV catalogue, built over the past century, was the main driver behind Amazon’s $8.5B acquisition of the storied Hollywood studio. For the past year, since the deal closed in March 2022, Amazon Studios has been sifting through MGM’s library, identifying about a dozen initial titles for film and/or TV development, including Robocop, Stargate, Legally Blonde, Fame, Barbershop, The Magnificent Seven, Pink Panther and The Thomas Crown Affair.
We hear A-list creative auspices have reached out to inquire about adapting MGM IP which they are fans of. Additionally, Amazon Studios also has been leaning on its own roster of talent for some projects.
Each title is being approached differently — some are being steered toward film, some toward TV and some big ones are getting both movie and TV treatment.

In many successful film franchises, there may be said to be an unspoken "rule of threequels." This rule dictates that the third film in a series is where things begin to unravel. The thinking goes as follows: A film is a hit, establishing a new character or world into cinema. The sequel, banking on the success of the first, will be larger, more exciting, and is often more ambitious. By the third film, however, the filmmakers -- in an effort to outdo film #2 -- either have to ratchet the action up to a near-intolerable levels, or take the action in a "new direction," often with disastrous results. One can see this dynamic at play in "Alien³," "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Return of the Jedi," "Death Wish 3," "X-Men: The Last Stand," "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," "Spider-Man 3," "RoboCop 3," and "Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

This Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett article contains spoilers.
The Book of Boba Fett throws quite a few new characters into the mix in “The Streets of Mos Espa,” as the city’s new daimyo continues to deal with threats to his throne. A (final?) confrontation with Black Krrsantan and the Hutt twins ushers in a new band of angsty bikers now under Boba’s employ as well as a cameo by a rancor keeper you might recognize if you’ve followed showrunner and director Robert Rodriguez’s career. In fact, this cameo is tradition in Rodriguez’s movies.
Danny Trejo as the Rancor Keeper
You might know him best as Machete, Razor Charlie in From Dusk Till Dawn, or as one of the baddies in the latter two chapters of Rodriguez’s legendary Mexico Trilogy, but you’ve definitely seen him before in one of this director’s films.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

After the exit of Neill Blomkamp, classic franchise revival RoboCop Returns has procured in a director in Little Monsters’ Abe Forsythe.
RoboCop Returns has received yet another lease on life in the form of a new director in Abe Forsythe!

Fred Dekker, the writer and director of the 1986 horror film Night of the Creeps, is planning a sequel that will bring back the original cast! That cast of the original film includes Jason Lively, Steve Marshall, Jill Whitlow, Allan Kayser, and Tom Atkins.
The news about Night of the Creeps 2 came from Tom Atkins during an interview with JoBlo. He said:
“I would like to see Detective Ray Cameron become resurrected somehow. And Fred Dekker and I, every time we see each other, we talk about that. And he's determined to do a sequel with the three kids and myself. I mean they're no longer kids, they're all in their 50's, but they're all still kicking and healthy and looking good. I would love to do that again. I love Detective Ray Cameron.”
It would be pretty cool if this film project actually ended up happening. I love the idea...

Fred Dekker, writer and director of this fun-loving and enjoyably-daft B-movie homage, had a strangely short career as a director. Oddly though, he is responsible for two films that I, and many others, really love. Night of the Creeps being one of them, and the other one being a Halloween-staple for me, 1987’s The Monster Squad. Dekker wrote the script in just a week for this film, and it is a good script that in many ways feels ahead of its time. It’s quite unusual how little credit Dekker has received for his work (his only other feature film is Robocop 3) because two of his films are cult favourites, and truly entertaining slices of horror fun. A definite inspiration to many similar films that would follow through the years,...

Neill Blomkamp won't direct the new RoboCop sequel after all.
"Dick, I am very disappointed."
This was an unfortunately brief honeymoon. Last year it was announced that Neill Blomkamp had signed on to direct a new RoboCop movie. And not just any new RoboCop movie (and certainly not another dreaded reboot). No, Blomkamp was here to "serve the public trust" and deliver a direct sequel to the first (and classic) RoboCop movie. So, forget about the disappointing (and strange) turns the franchise has taken since 1987 and instead think of how last year's Halloween pretended the other seven sequels and the two ill-advised reboot entries never happened and that's basically the approach RoboCop Returns was going for.
But a mere 13 months later, Blomkamp has had to depart the project because he's shooting "a new horror thriller" and MGM is intent on shooting RoboCop Returns "now." Here's the director's full statement on the subject.

Director Neill Blomkamp’s developing RoboCop sequel is confirmed to feature the title character’s original robotic suit.
RoboCop Returns will be, as its title implies, a return to the sci-fi action franchise in classic form, as the latest news on the developing sequel now reveals. Not only will the film pick up from the continuity of director Paul Verhoeven’s iconic original 1987 RoboCop, but its director, Neill Blomkamp, has stated that his sequel will sport the original – never-topped – RoboCop armored exoskeleton suit!
Blomkamp, in a revelatory tweeted reply to a fan's question, proved that RoboCop Returns will live up to its billing in a big way, with his confirmation of the title character’s classic suit, which might just be donned by original star Peter Weller.

Anyone who knows me well knows that I count Night of the Creeps among my favorite movies of all time. It's weird as hell, funny, creepy, campy, and utterly engrossing. It's Fred Dekker's first film, and it's finally become well known to fans of cult and horror film, due to home video releases over the years. That brings me to this current release, the Collector's Edition, out June 25 in North America on Blu-ray, from Scream Factory. Originally released in theaters in 1986, Night of the Creeps boasts awesome direction, great practical effects, and the legendary Tom Atkins. That alone should be enough to get a film fan excited. But let's get...

Fred Dekker has only directed three films, but he’s well-known to genre fans. Dekker is responsible for the horror cult classics Night of the Creeps and The Monster Squad, but his directing days came to a halt when he helmed 1993’s RoboCop 3. Since then, Dekker has done some TV screenwriting, but finally returned to features in 2018 […]

I’ve been hyped as hell ever since I found out that Neill Blomkamp was doing a RoboCop project, titled RoboCop Returns. The more I’ve learned, the more excited I’ve gotten, too.
Apparently, Blomkamp’s plans are to make an immediate sequel to the 1987 classic, ignoring the bizarre but not great RoboCop 2 and the just-plain-awful RoboCop 3 to do a Halloween style reboot of the franchise. Aside from that, it was also reported that the director’s first choice to play the lead was Peter Weller, who made the role iconic with his performance more than thirty years ago.
Though Weller might now be 71, he’s still looking pretty damn good for his age. Plus, the nature of the part means that you really only need to see his lower face, with the rest of his body concealed by the cyborg armor of the character. Even if...

The biggest difference between “Pacific Rim” and its perfunctory new sequel can be summed up in one word: expectations. When Guillermo del Toro’s original came out in July 2013, people were primed for something special. A universally beloved pop auteur mashing his love for Ray Harryhausen and otaku culture into an $190 million blockbuster about very giant monsters fighting very giant robots? It sounded like an urgent reprieve from the soulless corporate write-offs that defines the summer movie season, and not just a hollow, incoherent spectacle that felt more like an homage to Michael Bay than Ishirō Honda.
As a direct result of that disappointment, “Pacific Rim Uprising” stomps into theaters with a very different set of baggage. For one thing, del Toro is no longer in the director’s chair; still serving as a producer on the project, he’s bequeathed his seat to Steven S. DeKnight. While the first...
