Agnieszka Holland’s refugee drama The Green Border has taken the top prize for best film at the Polish Film Awards. The black-and-white feature, which looks at the inhumane treatment of refugees trying to cross the natural border between Belarus and Poland, premiered to critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival last year but came under attack from Poland’s far-right government, which called the movie “Nazi propaganda” for its supposedly negative depiction of Polish police and border guards. The political attacks are thought to have influenced the Polish Oscar committee’s decision not to put Green Border forward as Poland’s best international film contender this year, instead selecting Dk and Hugh Welchman’s Hugh animated literary adaptation The Peasants (which did not get nominated).

Ladies and gentlemen, it appears Aaron Rodgers, who’s taken a grand total of four snaps as quarterback of the New York Jets, has lost his mind.
This week, during his weekly appearance on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show (or if a WWE wrestler on bath salts hosted a sports program), he sorta accused Jimmy Kimmel of associating with Jeffrey Epstein — exacting revenge against Kimmel for ragging on Rodgers and his public Covid vaccine skepticism in his late-night monologues. This latest outburst follows a string of recent kooky behavior,...

When Amy Carlson’s mummified body was found in April 2021, it looked like a blue skeleton. It was also in a sleeping bag wrapped in Christmas lights. Her followers in the Love Has Won cult were apparently still waiting for the Galactics, a group of dead luminaries led by Robin Williams, to come pick her up in their spaceship. Somehow, this never happened. Instead, the cops came.

Cinematographer and director Warwick Thornton scored top honors Saturday at the Camerimage cinematography film festival for his magical tale of an aboriginal youth, “The New Boy,” which film jurors called a distinctive “portrait of an extinguished spirituality.”
Thornton, in accepting the Golden Frog, said he had been so moved by the cinematography work onscreen at the fest, a top global event for directors of photography, he’d been “tearing for a week.”
Ed Lachman, director of photography for Pablo Larrain’s horror fantasy “El Conde,” inspired by the life of Chilean tyrant Augusto Pinochet, won the Silver Frog for what the jury called “cinematic high poetry,” while the Bronze Frog and Audience Award went to cinematographer Robbie Ryan for his Gothic dream-like imagery in Emma Stone-starrer “Poor Things,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

The Film Department of the Tokyo University of Arts has a high-profile council consisting of the directors Nobuhiro Suwa and Akihito Shiota, the screenwriters Michiko Oishi and Yuji Sakamoto, and from the production sector Shoji Masui and Shozo Ichiyama. Every year the department presents a body of work from its students. This year, nine students and three alumni from the university created 11 silent films spanning from mysteries, thrillers, monsters, samurai tales, and animation, which were released under the title “Silent Movie”. On the occasion of Japan Society's Japan Cuts Film Festival, the audience gets the opportunity to see the next generation of filmmakers play with cinema's past. Because all films are narrated by a so-called benshi, a storyteller that dubs the moving images. Renowned benshi Ichiro Kataoka picks up the old tradition and mixes modern with forgotten tradition.

The Polish film industry is embracing variety and high-profile international collaborations, with a slew of new co-productions already generating buzz among buyers and festival programmers. “More and more established filmmakers, who used to look for collaborators in Romania or Hungary, are now coming to Poland — mostly because we are backed by concrete institutions and because there is money,” says producer Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska of Madants, heading to Berlinale’s European Film Market with “Ultima Thule” and Goran Stolevski’s “Housekeeping for Beginners.”
“Our crews speak English and work abroad. We are visible internationally,” she adds.

Drew Barrymore, the original Firestarter from the 1984 film of that name is burning mad over the Razzie nomination (now withdrawn) of the new Firestarter, 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
Speaking out on both her own program, The Drew Barrymore Show, as well as CBS Mornings, Barrymore said her “blood boiled” after learning that the young actress was nominated for a worst actress Razzie Award. On CBS Mornings she called the Razzie nomination of a child “bullying.”
On her own show – watch both clips below – Barrymore said, “Listen, I get poking fun at ourselves. I mean come on, fair game, bring it on, but Ryan is 12 years old.” The original Firestarter continued, “Razzie co-founder John Wilson has since apologized and removed her from the category and said they’re implementing a new rule precluding anyone 18 years or younger.”
Barrymore said on CBS Mornings that she was hearted by the overwhelmingly supportive social media response for Armstrong.

He decides to check out the building for himself. There, he meets a woman who is the spitting image of Farzaneh. Her name is Bita. Stunned, the two compare family photos: Bita's husband also looks identical to Jalal. A story of identity and doppelgängers and much more. Some people love a slow burn — but for singer-songwriter Joshua Bassett, the pain of waiting for a resolution that might never come is too much to bear, as evidenced by his new single, “Smoke Slow.” The vulnerable, piano-backed song finds the High School Musical actor pining for quality time with a love interest he knows he won’t ever be able to call his owm.
“All that we are is all that we’ll ever be, ‘cause he’s the one waiting at home,” Bassett sings on the song’s chorus.

Joshua Bassett isn’t as over his ex as he thought he was. And he’s Ok admitting that. On his brand-new song “Doppelgänger,” Bassett sings about dating his former lover’s lookalike as he continues to long for a lost love. He’s done keeping his guard up, and he’s a better person for it.
On its surface, “Doppelgänger” — along with its video, which follows a reflective love story with an Olivia Rodrigo lookalike — seems to confirm that the new music is about his headline-making, Twitter-chatter-creating split...

Brazilian filmmaker Juliana Rojas’ last Locarno experience was one to remember, culminating in a Special Jury Prize for her 2017 feature “Good Manners,” which played in competition. This time around her situation is less enviable, as the filmmaker presents “Cidade; Campo” (City; Country) in Locarno’s The Films After Tomorrow competition for productions halted by Covid-19 shutdowns.
Rojas is among Brazil’s most exciting film and TV writing-directing talents with a resume loaded with festival plaudits, including two Cannes Discovery Awards for “A Stem” in 2007 and “Doppelgänger” in 2012. But even a filmmaker with such a stellar track-record can’t escape the dire effects of the pandemic on the industry.
Rojas and her team are presently finalizing the script and looking at ways to adjust the project to its post-shutdown budget, which has suffered a hit, according to producer Sara Silveira of Dezenove Som e Imagens.

Ok, Venom fans, break out your Green Jelly tapes, because it's time to learn all about Carnage, Spider-Man's evil double's evil double.
All right, so, a few months ago, when Deadpool 2 came out, we did an article called Deadpool 2: Who is Juggernaut? People were pretty annoyed because Juggernaut’s role in that movie as a major antagonist wasn’t advertised and they cried spoiler. And that’s a fair call. Apologies.
That said, if you think it’s a spoiler that Carnage is in any way alluded to in Venom, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s Carnage. Of Course he’s going to be at least referenced in a Venom movie. The movie just used Carlton Drake and Riot. Venom doesn’t exactly have a Batman-level rogues gallery to play with and only one of his bad guys is important...

The internet. The great democratiser. In the case of sex work it has allowed women to take control of how, when and where they work – mainly through cam sites like Adultwork, Chaturbate, Mfc and more…But despite the ease of access to a performance outlet, the audience has access too – to performers lives, their personalities, etc. Yet there has to be boundaries. Which is why many sex workers create online personas, some using their own character traits others inventing entirely new ones, to create an extra layer of protection between their online life and their offline life.
Very much a “what if?” tale, Cam takes that idea of created personas and asks what if our online personas took on a life of their own?

If you’re an Arrow fan who pays even the tiniest bit of attention to what’s happening behind-the-scenes on the CW drama, you were already aware of Willa Holland’s shortened episode commitment for the past two seasons. This was a request Holland herself made to the series’ executive producers in an effort to give her more availability to pursue other projects. Due to Holland’s desire to move on from Arrow, plus the fact that Thea’s departure from Star City was heavily teased in “Doppelganger,” it was easy to predict that tonight’s installment, “The Thanatos Guild,” would be her swan song. Fortunately, though, the

If there is one lesson to take away from Arrow Season 6 Episode 15 it is that things are not slowing down anytime soon.
Especially as the Dragon is now rising in Ricardo Diaz who is beginning his take over of Star City and the fall of Oliver Queen.
I have been stoked for "Doppelganger" ever since it was announced that Roy Harper was returning. Colton Haynes was always one of the best parts of Arrow when he was on.
But what had me more stoked was what this would do for Thea's storyline. A storyline that has been lacking for most of Arrow Season 6 sadly, excluding her coma trip.
It was beautiful to be reminded of how strong Thea's love for Roy was. She has lost a lot of people over the years and Roy is one of the last few people in her life she has left.

Can Roy Harper be back on Arrow every week again? While “Doppelganger” is by no means a perfect episode, it’s a vast improvement over last week’s low point, and much of the hour’s strengths have to deal with Roy’s return and how it affects the members of Team Arrow. Although Colton Haynes himself doesn’t get to do too much in tonight’s installment, the presence of his character provides Thea with her best story of Season 6 so far while also causing Oliver and Diggle to confront some issues that they have kept to themselves for a while. Sure, everything involving Black Siren

This week on The CW’s Arrow, Roy Harper returned to the mix, and with him came the first interesting beats of Ricardo Diaz’s arc, a bold play by “Laurel” and, in the end, the arrival of a new threat.
So, the question last week wasn’t, “Where had Black Siren stumbled to?” but “What was she up to?” Because in a way, that wasn’t her but “our” Laurel approaching that trucker for help. Arriving at the Scpd, she claims that she is the Laurel Lance, whose death was faked by Damien Darhk and who for two years has been kept prisoner somewhere.

After the mess that was the civil war episode of "Collison Course," Arrow gets (way) back to basics in this episode, "Doppelganger." After a lengthy absence, Roy Harper is back and Thea puts back on her Speedy outfit. That's not all either. Laurel Lance is also "resurrected," even if it's just as a new mask for Black Siren. Even if all these returns end up being temporary, which is likely, they still facilitate a deeply satisfying and weirdly nostalgic episode of Arrow.

With all the hoopla surrounding Colton Haynes’ highly anticipated return to Arrow, it’s quite easy to place much focus on his character of Roy Harper. That aside, it looks like next week’s episode will boast even more reason to get us geeked.
We say that because Thea Queen will once again don her Speedy threads, something she hasn’t done very often since “retiring” from the vigilante lifestyle after season 4. To be honest, I’m always glad to see whenever she fails to kick the old habit because she isn’t really given much to do these days – and because her costume is so badass. Granted, actress Willa Holland has been on the show in a reduced capacity for season 5 and 6, but you have to admit that her character has just kind of “been there,” if you will.

Colton Haynes‘ Roy Harper makes his long-awaited return to Arrow on Thursday, March 8 (The CW, 9/8c) — but if he knows what’s good for him, he’ll make his latest visit a quick one.
New photos from “Doppelganger” find a suited-up Thea rescuing her ex-boyfriend, who appears to be bleeding from his abdomen. Or his hand. Either way, he’s not doing great.
“Roy is called back to Star City to help resolve an urgent matter with high stakes for the team,” executive producers Marc Guggenheim and Wendy Mericle said in a statement back in Dec. 2017. “His short visit turns into something surprising,...

In the illustrious history of Arrow, it could be argued that the most popular hero to fight alongside Oliver Queen was that of Roy Harper, played by fan favorite actor Colton Haynes. Originally introduced in the back half of season 1, we saw this young man organically develop and eventually blossom into the vigilante known as Arsenal, with one badass costume to boot.
But, as fate would have it, Haynes was contracted for but a few seasons, and an exit was plotted for him late in season 3. As you may recall, Roy publicly took the fall for Oliver by saying that he was the original Arrow before faking his own death. In the time since, we’ve seen him come back for a guest shot, but he’s remained in the hearts and minds of Arrowverse junkies everywhere. That’s why we were so happy to learn the other month that...

Israeli film-maker Avi Nesher is due to start shooting the first film in a trilogy of works devoted to the theme of ‘the past’ this autumn.
“They’re all based on really strange true stories,” Nesher told ScreenDaily.

“I was a film critic before I became a director. I figure that if I invent anything I’m probably ripping off old movies I once saw which is why I like to work with real-life flights of fantasy,” continued Nesher, whose credits include The Wonders(2013), The Matchmaker (2010) and The Secrets (2007).

Five days into the new year and the movie awards season is in full swing. A chance to celebrate all of the cinematic gold bestowed upon us by filmmakers over the last 365 days, the majority of awards bodies veer towards the positive. The good, the great and the outstanding movie achievements. Of course, you can’t have yin without yang, and that customary glint of deviousness amidst the showers of compliments will soon be upon us, in the shape of the The Annual Golden Raspberry Awards.
Known informally as The Razzies, the achievements are dished out based on how bad the category nominees performed, and this year’s nominees have now been announced. Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways To Die In The West beat out its closest competitors for the esteemed honour of most nominations with a whopping eight altogether. Recent limelight comedy, The Interview, also snagged four nominations across three categories.

Take Israeli director Avi Nesher out of Israel, and he creates celluloid crap of the third order. Consider She (1982) with Sandahl Bergman. Or Doppelganger (1993) with Drew Barrymore? Or even Ritual (2002) with Jennifer Grey? If you haven’t been face-to-face with any of these features, you’re probably being rewarded for accomplishing something quite wonderful in a former life.
But drop-ship Nesher back to his native country, and he can surprise you. Turn Left at the End of the World (2004) is semi-engaging look at the plight of Indian immigrants living in the backwoods of Israel during the sixties. As for The Secrets (2007), here’s an exceptionally fine tale of an Orthodox Jewish young woman who wants to break all the rules by studying the Talmud and living her life as a lesbian. Really a must-see.
Now Nesher’s latest effort, The Matchmaker, is currently trodding down the theater aisles. No confetti is needed.
