What kind of Christmas movie do you get when your director’s inspirations are early-90s Nickelodeon live-action shows and 1960s European cinema? In Tyler Taormina’s case, the answer is Christmas Eve In Miller’s Point.
The movie sees four generations of the Balsano family get together for what, it transpires, may be their last annual Christmas party. With celebrations underway, two of the clan’s younger members sneak out in an act of teenage rebellion, which plays out against a backdrop of wintery and suburban Long Island.
The film is Taormina’s follow-up to the well-received indie pic Ham on Rye. He co-wrote the script with Eric Berger. Michael Cera is a producer and part of an ensemble cast that includes Elsie Fisher, Maria Dizzia, Francesca Scorsese, Ben Shenkman, Gregg Turkington, Sawyer Spielberg and newcomer Matilda Fleming.

David Sanborn, the six time Grammy-winning alto saxophonist who played at Woodstock, composed music for the Lethal Weapon movies, played in the SNL and Late Night with David Letterman bands and worked with everyone from Stevie Wonder to David Bowie, died Sunday afternoon, May 12th, after an extended battle with prostate cancer with complications. He Was 78.
Sanborn’s music is often described “smooth jazz,” but he reportedly rejected that characterization, and one can see why. His lively, iconic sax solo on Bowie’s “Young Americans” is anything but. Sanborn preferred the idea that he “put the saxophone back into rock ’n’ roll.”
Indeed, he worked with a virtual who’s who of rock and R&b legends, including James Brown, Eric Clapton, Roger Daltrey, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Elton John, Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Roger Waters, Steely Dan, the Eagles,...

Anthony Hopkins is taking on yet another iconic figure, this time from the world of music.
The stage and screen legend — a two-time Academy Award winner — is attached to star as George Frideric Handel in “The King of Covent Garden,” set during the period the famed opera composer worked on his choral masterpiece “Messiah.” Embankment Films has launched global pre-sales on the project, which is scheduled for a late fall 2025 release.
Andrew Levitas (“Minimata”) will direct “The King of Covent Garden” from a script by Tim Slover, with the filmmakers pitching the feature as “a powerfully majestic celebration of genius breaking all the rules to create an anthem inspiring the popular imagination of global audiences.” Dan Lupovitz (“Death Defying Acts,” “Simpatico”) and Kevan Van Thompson (“Ballerina,” “Jojo Rabbit”) will produce.

Good Fortune Footage Reaction: Keanu Reeves Is Aziz Ansari's Literal Guardian Angel [CinemaCon 2024]
Aziz Ansari was a big name in comedy in the 2010s, not just from memorable roles in shows like "Parks and Recreation," but also his stellar turn as creator of the acclaimed Netflix comedy "Master of None." Ansari was set to make his directorial debut back in 2022 with "Being Mortal," but that film was shut down following sexual harassment allegations against Bill Murray, the star of the film. Not helping here were the sexual misconduct accusations against Ansari himself back in 2018.
Now, Ansari is ready to try again, making his feature directorial debut with "Good Fortune." The film is set to star Keanu Reeves, Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, and Sandra Oh, which is a mighty impressive cast — anyone doubting Keanu's comedic timing needs to remember the "Bill & Ted" movies and also watch his stellar performance in "Always Be My Maybe."

As the mixed critical response and lackluster box office for "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" emphatically proves, they simply don't make 'em like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" anymore.
When Roger Ebert reviewed Steven Spielberg's action-adventure classic back in 1981, he opined that it played like "an anthology of the best parts from all the Saturday matinee serials ever made." As it happens, that was pretty much George Lucas' idea when he dreamt up Indiana Jones in the first place — and what an idea it was. The Indiana Jones franchise has since become one of the biggest blockbuster sagas in cinema history, with Dr. Henry Jones Jr. himself ascending to the status of pop culture icon in the process.
While 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" has its defenders, and many fans of the series will swear 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" is just as good as "Raiders,...

If Julianne Moore were still Oscar-less, would she win now for “May December”? Which Christmas movies deserve Oscars? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions in an end-of-year mailbag episode.
We love a sliding doors prompt and none are better than when you taketh or giveth Oscars. Moore finally took home the gold when she won Best Actress for “Still Alice” (2014), but had that not happened, would she be the current Best Supporting Actress frontrunner with an even great overdue narrative than what she had back then? She’d arguably at least give “The Holdovers'” Da’Vine Joy Randolph a run for her money with critics prizes. And if Emma Stone hadn’t prevailed for “La La Land” (2016), how much more steam would she have now for “Poor Things”?

The concept of the holiday movie began back in 1898 with G.A. Smith’s pioneering silent film Santa Claus. The first of its kind to show the depiction of Santa that only runs just shy over a minute.
Since then Hollywood has belted out an array of films that have either been true to the genre such as A Christmas Story; The Holiday; Miracle On 34th Street; Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey or films like Die Hard; Brazil, and Gremlins that have teetered on the edge of identifying as a holiday film.
Then there are the anti-holiday movies and the Christmas horrors. Subgenres of their own like the slasher Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, and Christmas Evil, a John Waters favorite, so you are inclined to know what demented viewing you are in for.

This episode of the Horror TV Shows We Miss video series was Written and Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Horror for Christmas? Yes, I’m here to holly your jolly, deck your halls, and sacrifice your children to Krampus. What a merry holiday season indeed! Since our October vid focused on Halloween Specials, I figured the Spooky Christmas crossovers deserved some attention as well.
As a kid, my family did have Christmas watching traditions like most. We did Scrooged, A Christmas Story, Frosty, Charlie Brown, Garfield, Home Alone, Gremlins (Ahhhh it’s controversial), Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands…and my mom may have snuck in Black Christmas. She was and is a fan of Holiday-based Horror. Her favorite being My Bloody Valentine. All of this is totally normal. So, as you can probably guess, the tradition has continued.

In 1843, London publishers Chapman & Hall released A Christmas Carol. Written by Charles Dickens and illustrated by John Leech, it was inspired in part by Dickens’s anger at inequality in his country, especially as it affected children. Despite its aversion to the upper classes, A Christmas Carol was an immediate hit among readers and critics. Given the book’s popularity, it’s no surprise that movie makers have picked up on the story many times. Between its clear redemption arc and ghostly premise, the story has everything that a good movie needs.

The eight titles below run the gamut from inducing warm holiday feels to ghostly insanity to chilling terror.

With the new powers afforded him by these upgrades, Steve goes to work for the Office of Scientific Information, battling evil forces.

The new film “It’s a Wonderful Knife,” written by Michael Kennedy (“Freaky”) and directed by Tyler MacIntyre (“Tragedy Girls;” “V/H/S/99”) falls into numerous genres: slasher, comedy, holiday and even LGBTQ+.
It’s no surprise that Kennedy and MacIntyre drew upon some obvious — and not-so-obvious — inspirations for the festive and frightening feature. TheWrap caught up with Kennedy and MacIntyre to talk all things “It’s a Wonderful Knife.”
The obvious inspiration for the film — which finds a young woman (Jane Widdop) transported to a world where she never existed on the eve of Christmas — is “It’s a Wonderful Life.” What is your connection to the classic?

When we talk about Christmas movies and holiday classics, so often, we're talking about movies that came out decades ago, like "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946), "Miracle on 34th Street" (1957), "A Christmas Story" (1983), or "Scrooged" (1988). Even "Home Alone" was released in 1990 and that feels downright modern compared to many of these films that have been in rotation for longer than a fair number of you reading this have been alive. The point is, it's tough to gain that coveted holiday classic status. But 20 years ago, Jon Favreau and Will Ferrell teamed up to give us the definitive modern Christmastime classic: "Elf."

When listening to Danny Elfman's score for Richard Donner's "Scrooged," the 1988 black comedy rendition of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," one might get the impression that it was initially supposed to be a horror movie. Indeed, the tone of "Scrooged" is terrifying. The Marley character, played by John Forsythe, is a desiccated corpse with strips of mummified fleshing dropping off of him. The Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come is a nine-foot-tall cloak stuffed with the souls of the damned. In a surprisingly tragic scene, the Ebenezer Scrooge character -- named Frank Cross and played with his usual a-hole-ish charm by Bill Murray -- faces the frozen corpse of a homeless man in the sewer. It seems that Christmas Eve is not a cheery time for everyone.
"Scrooged" is bleak, terrifying, weird, and utterly hilarious. Frank Cross is a brilliant updating of the Scrooge character, as Dickens' famous...

Robbie Robertson, the founding guitarist for The Band, has passed away. According to Robertson’s longtime manager Jared Levine, the world-famous musician passed away on Wednesday. He was 80.
Born Jaime Robbie Robertson on July 5, 1974, in Toronto, the Hall of Famer played on The Band’s classic hits like “The Weight,” “Rag Mama Rag,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Atlantic City,” “Jawbone,” and more. Nominated for five Grammy awards, Robertson arrived on the music scene at the influential age of 16, when he played for Ronnie Hawkins’ The Hawks. Karen Allen was "disappointed" with her small role in 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny'.The 71-year-old star briefly returns as Indy's wife Marion Ravenwood in the new movie but lamented how director James Mangold changed the story content and reduced her screentime. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Karen said: "When Steven (Spielberg) was still gonna direct the film, I didn't have the opportunity to read any of those scripts, although I know that Marion was much more involved in the story at that juncture."I knew James had hired new writers and that there was going to be a whole new approach with a new director and new writers, but I was really going into the unknown."The 'Scrooged' star added: "The next thing I knew, I was a reading a script that told ('Dial of Destiny's') story, and of course, I was disappointed.

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
When engineer Pelia strutted her way onto the Enterprise bridge in the premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season two, blatantly ignoring the evacuation warning and acting Captain Spock’s orders, viewers simply assumed she was just another one of the delightfully odd characters played by Carol Kane. From The Princess Bride and Scrooged to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Taxi, Kane has established herself as a master at playing wonderful oddballs, squeaky-voiced agents of chaos who disrupt the status quo simply by showing up.
And to be sure, that’s exactly what Pelia does. Not only does she see right through Spock’s (literally) textbook plan to falsely sabotage the ship and steal the Enterprise but she also offers a much more elegant solution, helping the skeleton crew answer a distress call from the erstwhile Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh.

When Carol Kane was approached about joining “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” for its second season, the celebrated 70-year-old actor had to make a confession: She’d never watched a single minute of the venerated franchise.
“The science fiction world has not really been attractive to me for some reason,” Kane says. “Now that I’m in it,” she adds with a laugh, “I’m very excited about it. It just wasn’t on my path until now.”
Clearly the producers were on to something. Kane’s role on the Paramount+ series fits neatly within her wheelhouse of sublime eccentrics, from her Emmy-winning role on “Taxi” to for-the-ages supporting turns in “The Muppet Movie,” “The Princess Bride,” “Scrooged” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” Here, she plays Pelia, the new chief engineer of the Enterprise and a member of an alien species never before seen on “Star Trek”: Lanthanites, who are...

Ray Donovan star Liev Schreiber is getting locked and loaded for a holiday-themed action movie from Gangs of London director Xavier Gens called The Guns of Christmas Past. Deadline says Schreiber is negotiating for the lead role in Gens’s genre mash-up, described as “A Christmas Carol meets John Wick.”
The story revolves around Ebb, a former hitman for the mob who emerges from the shadows when his best friend gets killed. Ebb plans to infiltrate the enemy’s compound to inflict revenge, but the past, present, and future ghosts haunt him throughout the night to ruin his plans. Gens directs from a script by Andrew Hilton, with Navid McIlhargey and Erik Olsen producing.
I’m sorry, what? This movie sounds wacky! It’s like something Frank Cross from Scrooged would air on Ibc Television on Christmas Eve. After 2022’s Violent Night, starring David Habour, outlandish Christmas movies are the new holiday hotness.

Two very different bears — one going berserk on drugs and another a mere superstition — hit streaming this week. It’s a slow month for digital premieres, but the best of this week’s offerings span a variety of moods and genres. You’ll also find a pair of documentaries about beloved cultural figures worth watching.
The contender to watch this week: “Cocaine Bear“
Elizabeth Banks paraded her movie’s eponymous terrorizer onto this year’s Oscar stage, so who’s to say she couldn’t do it again in 2024? Maybe “Cocaine Bear” can ride its box-office success to a Best Visual Effects nomination. It worked for “The Revenant,” but that had Leo and a huge awards-friendly pedigree. Either way, you can watch the likes of Keri Russell and Alden Ehrenreich stave off this hopped-up villain on Peacock.

If a script involves the antichrist, gruesome deaths, and one spiraling towards insanity as they question whether or not their child is evil, it's safe to conclude the film can be categorized as horror. However, director Richard Donner took a delicate approach when he asked renowned actor Gregory Peck to be a lead role in his 1976 film "The Omen," the fourth film in Donner's directorial career. Donner's filmography is filled with successful and treasured films like "The Goonies". "Scrooged", and "Lethal Weapon." While his work has comedic elements, "The Omen" was far from a feel-good film and yet Donner desperately wanted Peck on board. In order to convince the highly sought-after and acclaimed actor to accept the role, Donner took a grey-area approach and tread lightly about how the film would be categorized.

Richard Donner's 1978 film "Superman" changed how people thought of comic book films. Before this, we had silly superheroes like Adam West's "Batman" series. It was a blast, but it wasn't a serious take on comics or characters like this. "Superman" really started it all, nabbing three Oscar nominations and winning a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects. Christopher Reeve played Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman in his breakout role and starred with the likes of Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, and Margot Kidder.
Both the 1978 film and 1980's "Superman II" were set to be filmed simultaneously, and after shooting a big chunk of the second film in addition to the first one, Donner ("Lethal Weapon," "The Goonies," "Scrooged") was fired from the production. He stated that he was never given a budget or a schedule for the film and was replaced by Richard Lester, who reshot a lot of...

In 2023, we are living in the age of superhero films. The Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Universe, as well as assorted others, have become the dominant form of entertainment these days. Back in the late 1970s, however, superheroes were the stuff of comic books, relegated to the world of camp and kids entertainment. Sure, we'd seen superheroes on TV with shows like "Wonder Woman" and "Batman," with the latter getting a film version as well in 1966, but it was all a bit on the silly side. (This is not a judgment. Campy superheroes are lovely.) Then came the Richard Donner-directed "Superman" in 1978, starring Christopher Reeve in his breakout role.
This was a whole different kind of superhero film. "Superman" wasn't as dark as some of the comic book movies we have now, but it was indeed taken more seriously than anything we'd seen before. The cast included heavy hitters like Marlon Brando,...

During the Christmas season there are a lot of movies to talk about and classics that pop up on a lot of TVs that people watch over and over despite the fact that they know the outcome and probably every line of dialogue after years of watching. But there are usually different ways to look at old movies since the revelation of what each one means and how they apply to the people who are watching them can come with age, and it can come at the darndest moments when one doesn’t expect it. For instance, the idea that A

Although Johnny Depp hasn’t played Captain Jack Sparrow on the big screen in five years, he suited up as his iconic Pirates of the Caribbean character for a Make-a-Wish video sent to a young fan.

Richard Donner’s Scrooged is an unassailable holiday classic. If you’re channel surfing on Christmas Eve, you’re all but guaranteed to run into this film at some point. While versions of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol are a dime a dozen at Christmas time, Scrooged is different. A spoof of the classic tale that swaps Victorian-era London for a 1980s Yuppie-filled NYC, Bill Murray stars as Frank Cross, the meanest TV exec in the business. When not producing fare like “The Night the Reindeer Died” (with Lee Majors – the Six Million Dollar Man!), he torments his employees, including Alfie Woodard as his Bob Cratchit stand-in, Grace Cooley and Bobcat Goldthwait’s Elliot Loudermilk. But, of course, Cross wasn’t always a miser, with Karen Allen’s Claire Philips reminding him of the gentle guy he used to be.

"A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens was embraced by the British public from the moment it first dropped in 1843; it was an instant bestseller and the work has never been out of print since (via ThoughtCo). Almost 60 years later, the festive tale took a leap to the new-fangled medium of cinema with "Scrooge, or Marley's Ghost" in 1901. That title hinted at a vision of Film Adaptations Yet to Come; Scrooge was the star of the show and would become a juicy role for dozens of famous actors over the next 120 years.
Since Daniel Smith donned Scrooge's nightcap in that pioneering first adaptation, George C. Scott, Albert Finney, Reginald Owen, Patrick Stewart, and Henry Winkler have all given their distinctive take on the role, while Alastair Sim remains many people's definitive version of the character. Bill Murray put a modern spin on the tale in "Scrooged," while in animation we've had Mr. Magoo,...

Like a cyanide-laced sugarplum, Violent Night is a jolly and vicious burst of holiday mayhem. Bloody and crass, yet brimming with Christmas spirit, it’s a 110-minute joke that largely works because of how firmly everyone involved commits to the bit.
David Harbour stars as Santa Claus, first seen drinking his holiday blues away at a London watering hole. Santa’s having a rough Christmas Eve; kids are getting greedier and naughtier every year, and he’s thinking of hanging up the hat. His night doesn’t get any easier when he heads to the United States-based home of a wealthy, heartless matriarch (Beverly D’Angelo), whose family has been taken hostage by a gang of thieves (led by John Leguizamo). While his first instinct is to fly off and finish his route, the presence of an innocent child (Leah Brady) causes Santa to reconsider, call upon the skills he learned...

Christmas is a time marked by tradition. For every family that celebrates the rituals are different, yet some things are close to universal: a tree strung in lights and ornaments; a house shining bright; and perhaps a candle in every window. Plus, there are the movies.
Christmas movies are as ubiquitous as ornaments these days, with streaming services like Netflix turning them into a virtual cottage industry. However, we all have our own personal favorites that tend to be made of longer lasting stuff–the kind that are almost their own ritual we revisit every new Yuletide season.
Below our staff has offered some of their own personal favorites that are perhaps largely off the more beaten track that defines the obvious classics… but each offers their own kind of Christmas magic every December.

Ad-libbing is an art relished by many of the great comedy actors of our time, like Steve Martin, the late John Candy, and Robin Williams, just to name a few. It helps actors add their own unique flavor to their respective roles, which makes for more authentic and natural performances. The downside is that capturing actors' off-the-cuff quips can cause complications on set, as was the case with Martin and Candy on the holiday classic "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." Another example can be found in yet another holiday classic: 1988's "Scrooged."

In the 1988 Christmas comedy "Scrooged," Bill Murray plays Frank Cross, a mean-spirited TV executive who oversees a live televised adaptation of Charles Dickens' 1983 novella "A Christmas Carol." The irony is that "Scrooged" is based off Dickens' story and Cross is a modern version of the misanthropic Ebenezer Scrooge. If one were to ask its star, Bill Murray, why that is, he might single out the way the movie was shot as the reason it hasn't caught on with a larger audience.
A real-life Scrooge, Frank (Murray) loudly berates his subordinates -- and when I say loudly, I mean loudly. He forces a single mother (who has to run her mute son to the doctor) to work overtime, fires a guy who dares to critique his random and absurdly violent commercial that has absolutely nothing to do with "A Christmas Carol,...
