He appeared three more times as the popular boxing champ. In the 80s, he made his mark in the all-time action classic “Predator.” He reemerged in the 90s as Adam Sandler’s one-handed golfing guru Chubbs. And in recent years, Weathers appeared in several episodes of the Disney+ hit, “The Mandalorian.”

Warner Bros – circa 1986. A bunch of powerful, suit-wearing studio execs are summoned to a studio lunch like no other. They’re set to observe an Aikido demonstration by a superstar trainer named Steven Seagal, previously known as the fight choreographer who broke Sean Connery’s wrist while training him for Never Say Never Again. By the end of the demonstration, mangled stunt men lie on the floor while a blood-stained Steven Seagal walks away with a movie deal that – unbeknownst to all – will establish him as perhaps the hottest action star of the early nineties, only for his career to collapse under the weight of his own ego eventually. But, in the early days, the sky was the limit for Seagal, and his first movie, Above the Law, is an impressive big-screen introduction to one of the most enigmatic movie stars of his time.

When Netflix’s “Extraction” premiered in 2020, its elaborately constructed set pieces propelled it to become the streaming service’s most-watched original film to that point and marked director Sam Hargrave as a talent to watch. Hargrave and star Chris Hemsworth now return to the adventures of Australian black ops mercenary Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) for “Extraction 2,” a sequel that improves upon its predecessor in just about every way without losing sight of what audiences loved about the first movie. The action is bigger, the motivations more personal and affecting, and Hargrave’s command of his craft more assured.
Hargrave is part of one of the most positive trends in action filmmaking in recent years: The rise of directors with a background in stunts. The most famous examples are Chad Stahelski (the “John Wick” franchise) and David Leitch, who follow in the footsteps of ’70s and ’80s pioneers Hal Needham (“Smokey and the Bandit...

There's a bitter irony in Carl Weathers' storied acting career. Despite starring in several "Rocky" movies and some memorable 1980s action movies, it was a silly Adam Sandler comedy that did irreparable damage to the actor's body.
For most of his career, Carl Weathers looked like he was cut from stone. He survived two seasons of NCAA football at San Diego State University and had a brief stint with the Oakland Raiders. After his professional football career ended, he took advantage of his degree in theater arts and made the switch to acting.
After a few years of small TV and film roles, the actor landed the role of a lifetime as boxer Apollo Creed opposite Sylvester Stallone in the 1976 film "Rocky." After four "Rocky" films, Weathers would star in some high-profile 1980s action films such as "Predator" and "Action Jackson." He would also star as a police detective in...

Quentin Tarantino took a revolutionary and non-linear approach to narrative filmmaking in his first two features, "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction." The latter film tells three intertwining stories, the operative word here being "intertwining." None of these stories stand on their own, and Tarantino isn't afraid to admit that. What makes "Pulp Fiction" so unique is not each of its individual characters or stories, but the way they are woven together.
The writer-director has often said that his films are set in the "Quentin universe" as he described it to The New York Times. The characters all operate within the same world, apart from ours, that abides by a different logic — Tarantino's logic.
He's a film lover, but he wanted to take some beloved cinematic tropes and collage them together to create something more novelistic than traditionally dramatic. One homage, one quirky moment, and one big twist aren't enough for...

It hasn't been the easiest year for Kevin Hart. Just 10 months ago, the 38-year-old comedian found himself at the center of a scandal. In May, Jonathan Todd Jackson, also known as Action Jackson, was charged with trying to coerce Hart into paying an undisclosed sum for a video allegedly showing the Ride Along star with a woman in Las Vegas. The charges included one count of attempted extortion and one count of extortion by letter. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, prosecutors said Jackson was accused of trying to sell the recording to several celebrity news websites. Per the Lada, the alleged attempted extortion took place between Aug. 25 and Aug. 30....

Action Jackson is one of the most common heroic stereotype movies that was ever put on the market, but people have loved it for a while now. It’s also one of the movies that Carl Weathers became known for since it delivers hard-hitting and very simple plot lines that don’t deviate and are easy to follow. When you want a good action flick that doesn’t make you snooze in the middle or wonder just what in the heck is going on or what you missed then this might be a good choice since it’s a non-stop rollercoaster ride from start

You might wonder why Action Jackson and Rocky 2 don’t appear on this list in reference to Carl Weathers. The answer is pretty simple, this is a ‘best of’ list’, and while those roles were pretty good those listed below are just flat out awesome. Weathers is the kind of guy that was built for action and has the kind of brash yet intelligent mind and the attitude that make him perfect for being the person that goes out with guns blazing and a ‘shoot first ask later’ mentality. He’s not a dumb man by any means, he’s a thinker,

Here's to the Golden Globes – what other award show would bring Meryl Streep onstage for a lifetime-achievement tribute and then have the orchestra salute her with Abba's "Mamma Mia"? A perfect moment to sum up everything the Globes stand for: finding the cheese lining in any artistic cloud. That's the saving grace of this dippiest and drunkest of award shows. Nobody cares who wins; all that matters at this TV party is locking the stars up together in the Beverly Hills Hilton, getting them ripped on free booze and...

It only took one view of the Creed trailer for the memories to come flooding back. The Rocky spinoff sees Sylvester Stallone on hand to train the son of his one-time nemesis Apollo Creed.
Of course, Carl Weathers, the man who brought Apollo to life, won't be present in the film (unless there's a Burgess Meredith-like spectral reappearance!), so we've taken some time out to celebrate the man behind the original Creed.
Rocky & Apollo Forever
Weathers played Apollo Creed in the first four Rocky films, duelling with Balboa before the pair eventually become brothers in arms. A thunderous punch from Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) shockingly killed Creed, prompting Rock to vow revenge in the ring.
Apollo is in Creed only in spirit, but there are still many fond memories. Chief of which has to be the above montage from Rocky III. Pure cheese, pure joy.

Cristela Alonzo is one of the breakout stars of this fall TV season. Warner Bros' 1988 Hollywood film featuring Carl Weathers and Sharon Stone released with the same name and the production house has given the makers of the Bollywood film a notice to change the title as "Action Jackson" is registered by them for the sub-continent as well.
A letter has been sent to Baba Arts Limited Production and Eros International, who are jointly producing the film.
On the other hand, Prabhudheva says there is a very special reason why his film is called "Action Jackson".

Prabhu Deva once again faces title trouble right after R.... Rajkumar where the director had to chop off the word 'Rambo' owing to copyright issues, and this time around, the film in question is Action Jackson. Warner Bros has asked the film's producers Baba Films and Eros Entertainment for an explanation since the Hollywood production house owns the right of the title Action Jackson, a 1988 film starring Carl Weathers and Sharon Stone. Moreover, we hear that on February 4, Warner Bros have sent a 48 hour notice asking them to change the title or face legal consequences since the title has already been registered by them. However, Gordhan Tanwani has maintained that he will not be giving up the title so easily. He also stated that the title was registered in all film producers' associations including the Impaa (Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association), the Guild, Amptpp (Association of Motion Pictures and Television...

It says something about Martin Scorsese’s balls that after the relative commerical underperformance of The King of Comedy and After Hours that he was still willing to push both himself and the cinematic form in a way which almost treats the more business driven aspects of the business with almost complete disdain. While now regarded as firmly being one of the establishment, in the 1980′s Scorsese was a provocative outsider working within the studio system and making films which satisfied him though after The Color of Money, to-date his only sequel and an enteraining if light film, he could have taken a different path. Instead screenwriter Paul Schrader and he revisited the idea of an individual alone in a sea of people, a man tormented by personal demons, nearly losing his mind over doing so while deciding just how he wants to live his life. In the 1970′s their...

I was alerted to this by one of the stars of the series, Delila Vallot (a writer/director in her own right, whose last feature film, Tunnel Vision, we highlighted last fall). It's a new sci-fi web series directed by Carl Weathers (yes, Action Jackson himself), from a script by written by Art Washington and Zachary Waterfire, starring Harry Lennix, and Ms Vallot, who describes it as "sort of Twilight Zone meets Lost." I don't have an official synopsis for it, but maybe that's by design. You'll just have to discover it all for yourself. But hopefully the talent involved is enough to intrigue you. This is episode 1, which was all shot in one night. Watch it below: Always Night from...

Rites of Spring (2011) Mpi Home Video DVD Available Now
After abducting the daughter of a wealthy socialite, a group of kidnappers seek refuge in an abandoned school in the middle of a wooded nowhere. Little do they know that they’ve chosen the hunting grounds of a ravenous creature that can only be sated by ritualistic sacrifices every spring. Writer/director Padraig Reynolds’ crime thriller/slasher hybrid received mixed reviews during its short festival run, but it’s a solidly crafted piece with some good performances and impressive cinematography by Carl Herse. The one-sheet art is a thing of beauty.

I don't know about you guys, but since Hollywood is all about recycling old material these days, I wouldn't mind seeing Detroit Police Detective and Sergeant Jericho Jackson, known as "Action Jackson," back on the big screen again in a sequel. Yes he's 25 years older now, but so what? If Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenneger, Dolph Lundgren and company can return to action-hero movie glory, while not Carl Weathers? Don't hold your breath though. This'll have to do in the meantime... Tom Wilson, the guy who played bully Biff Tannen in the "Back to the Future" movies, has come up with a nifty way to handle the most-asked fan questions about the beloved trilogy: by writing all the answers down on a postcard. Although it's been 22 years since the last film was in theaters, Wilson's still fielding queries about what it was like to work with Michael J. Fox ("Michael J. Fox is nice. I'm not in close contact with him"), hoverboard stories ("The hoverboards didn't really fly, we were hanging by wires from a cane") and what the maure was made of ("The manure was made from peat moss, cork, dirt and a food agent that made it sticky"). Oh, and what about Biff's famous catchphrases? "Among the many improvisations on set, I termed the coin 'butthead,' as well as 'Make like a tree, and get out of here.

The inmates at The Asylum must be in an extraterrestrial sort of mood of late what with their American Battleship mockbustering the blockbuster Battleship and the announcement of their newest found footage flick Alien Origins.
Let’s start with the just announced Alien Origins. Ever since the mockbuster Paranormal Entity, The Asylum has released a slew of found footage flicks with supernatural leanings. This one will mark the company's first foray into found footage aliens.
Synopsis:
Recently discovered footage from a lost military expedition exposes a horrifying truth about the genesis of life on earth.
That’s all we know at the moment. No cast or crew listings because, obviously, it is 100% legitimate found footage as is the case with all of their found footage movies, and the fact that I’ve received emails from two actresses I’ve seen die in some of these past films was clearly a...

It was a month ago when word first broke that The Asylum is getting back to its classical mockbuster ways with American Battleship, the company's take on this summer’s mega budget board game-inspired Battleship. Now we have our first look at stars Mario Van Peebles and Carl Weathers on the set as they try to prevent intergalactic aquatic invaders from sinking their battleship.
Mutant Vampire Zombies from the Hood! writer-director Thunder Levin handles the writing-directing duties for this Asylum mockbuster starring the director of New Jack City and Action Jackson.
Synopsis:
When a fleet of mysterious ships wage war against the Earth, only the crew of the USS Iowa, the last American battleship, can prevent global armageddon.
The Asylum posted these few images from American Battleship, which are mainly character shots - not surprising given the film is still early in production.
We still like our poster concept better.

Of all the upcoming blockbusters for The Asylum to do a mockbuster of, I commend the gutsy call made to ride the coattails of one that has already been the subject of much snickering and eye-rolling. Then again, they’re used to snickering and eye-rolling. But by hiring Sonny Spoon and Apollo Creed, their American Battleship already has the cooler cast.
He’s nearly been eaten by Jaws, been beheaded by a Highlander, played a werewolf cop, and co-starred in and directed New Jack City. Now Mario Van Peebles enters The Asylum to board an American Battleship to save the planet from alien invaders.
Those aliens have even bigger problems because Apollo Creed himself, Carl Weathers, is also onboard, and you just know after how things ended for him in Predator, he’s got a chip on his one remaining shoulder when it comes to fighting aliens.

For a movie which features action guru Carl Weathers standing in front of an enormous explosion while wielding two handguns and a curvy lady on its cover, you’d think Colin Budds’ generic 1992 action epic “Hurricane Smith” would pack a bigger punch in the testosterone department. And while there is definitely some interesting set pieces to ponder, it’s certainly no “Action Jackson”. Weathers stars as Billy “Hurricane Smith, an oil field worker who treks to Australian in order to locate his missing sister. Problem is, she’s gotten herself mixed up with a sinister collection of dog-killing Gold Beach gangsters, and none of them seem interested in sharing her whereabouts with our septic American hero. Thankfully, Hurricane isn’t one to take this sort of inhospitable treatment lying down. Before all is said and done, Australian’s touristy hot spot will be littered with scores of dead bodies, busted Sea World buses,...

Five years after his now legendary performance as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, Dolph Lundgren was enjoying considerable success having starred in a trio of films that include Red Scorpion, (the original) The Punisher and as popular toy figure He-Man in Masters of the Universe. The films ranged from okay to just plain awful, but Lundgren had an onscreen presence that was more than just his six foot five frame. The guy had personality and for a native of Stockholm, Sweden, he could easily adopt an American accent. The nineties saw Lundgren in a string of action films that included Showdown in Little Tokyo with the late Brandon Lee, Universal Soldier with Jean-Claude Van Damme and the Keanu Reeves vehicle Johnny Mnemonic which to this day remains Ludgren's last film that had an American theatrical release. By the close of the decade Lundgren's films were only released straight to video sin the U.

Today we got word through Variety that the adaptation will come from Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s own newly formed production company, Action Jackson Films. No relation to the Carl Weathers classic where he took on Coach himself, Craig T. Nelson.
Warner Brothers will be rolling the dice on this utterly baffling outing by releasing it theatrically. We’ll bring you more as it hits the newsroom.

Who knew that the Nazis -- one of the most brutal regimes in the history of brutal regimes -- would be responsible for such fun, mind-blowingly awesome entertainment? The second I see a dude in a grey German uniform and an eye patch enter the frame, I’m like ‘Whoa. That Nazi is going to provide me a great amount of entertainment this evening’. So, with Inglorious Bastards having recently premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, I figured I'd put together a list of some awesome WW2 films as a resource for anyone wanting to beef up their WW2 film knowledge before checking out Tarantino's self-proclaimed 'masterpiece'. It's worth noting that I focused on older films -- pre-1980 for the most part -- and only the stories featuring Nazi's. It was tough to cut this down to 15 films, but I'm sure you all will be able to come up with...
