On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 9:00 Pm, BBC One will air a thought-provoking documentary titled “Better Off Dead?” Authored by actor and disability rights activist Liz Carr, known for her roles in “Silent Witness,” “Good Omens,” and “The Witcher,” this documentary marks a shift from her acting career to a topic she is deeply passionate about: the debate on assisted suicide.
In “Better Off Dead?” Liz Carr explores the controversial issue of legalizing assisted suicide, a topic she has long campaigned against. Through her personal perspective as a disability rights advocate, Liz articulates her concerns about the potential risks legal changes could pose to disabled individuals. The documentary delves into the complex ethical, moral, and societal implications of assisted suicide, presenting a variety of viewpoints to give a balanced understanding of this contentious issue.

"Say Anything" marked America's transition into the 1990s by sealing off the heyday of feel-good high-school rom-coms and goth rock in the '80s. It was a major and much-needed send-off that is probably still an all-time favorite among many a Gen-x-er today.
The coming-of-age hit from 20th Century Fox featured breakout stars like John Cusack and Ione Skye. Even the supporting roles were played by soon-to-be major players like Pamela Adlon or the children of mega-famous stars like Jason Gould.
But not every actor featured in the 1989 romance movie survived into 2024. Unfortunately, John Mahoney, who played Diane's hypercritical (and hypocritical) father, James Court, passed away back in 2018. The late actor was the oldest major cast member by quite a few years and was in his late 70s when he passed. Before his death, Mahoney had an incredible career in film and television — his supporting role as Martin Crane in...

Better Off Dead is one of two 1985 movies that marked John Cusack’s debut as a leading man. After small roles in Sixteen Candles and Class, Cusack, at only eighteen, nabbed the lead in Rob Reiner’s The Sure Thing, and Savage Steve Holland’s Better Off Dead followed immediately afterward. While Cusack has often praised The Sure Thing and Reiner’s direction, his feelings on Better Off Dead have always been controversial. Holland says that while Cusack attended the dailies, when he saw the cut-together version, he felt humiliated and told him that he would never trust him again as a director. This was problematic as they were in the middle of shooting a follow-up, One Crazy Summer, whose shoot would be more fraught than the collegial Better Off Dead.

Fifteen years into video store culture, it conveyed an acceptance of a natural order of things — movies play theaters, then half a year later VHS rentals start, and they move to premium cable more than a year later.

A successful formula in horror is this: keep making what sells, but when the black ink begins to turn red, it may be time to tweak that formula. Come to think of it, “tweaking” may be a solid descriptor for Werewolves on Wheels (1971); this is a film that boasts not only bikers and werewolves, but a satanic cult behind it all! Can three genres and subgenres bump uglies and still provide coherent entertainment? Coherence? No. Entertainment? Most assuredly.
One could start with the title, getting the ball rolling on marketing, and as with most low budget bonanzas, delivering something not quite as good as one’s imagination. But recalibrated for that 1970s nihilistic molasses, it rides just fine.
Released in late November, WoW did well on the drive-in circuit and escaped critics’ wrath as just another second (or third) billed programmer. After all, the biker subgenre had been on fire...

John Cusack posted on Twitter that he was attacked by Chicago police while filming the protests in that city.
Cusack, whose films include Better Off Dead, Say Anything, Being John Malkovich, High Fidelity and Love & Mercy, is the brother of actresses Anne and Joan Cusack. He has been documenting the Chicago protests that erupted in the wake of Minneapolis man George Floyd’s death while in police custody.
Cusack wrote on Twitter: “Cops didn’t like me filming the burning car so they came at me with batons. Hitting my bike.”
The video posted by Cusack doesn’t show the incident, but audio from it indicates he’s angrily advised to move along by an unknown assailant. There’s then the sound of metal being slammed.
“Alright, alright,” Cusack is heard saying. Cusack also said in a separate tweet that he had been hit by pepper spray while out.

Better Off Dead might not get made today simply because the story revolves around a high school kid that thinks he’s got nothing left to live for when his girlfriend breaks up with him for the captain of the ski team. It’s safe to say that his depressive mood and suicide attempts would strike a very big nerve with audiences today and would fail to appeal to a lot of people that have become very sensitive to such subjects throughout recent years. It was a funny movie in its own time even if it wasn’t meant to be, but that

Sure, we all know where John Cusack is as his star rocketed to the top since Better off Dead. As Lane Myer, he was the guy you love to root for, especially when his girlfriend dumps him and he luckily fails miserably at killing himself. Since then he has starred in the futuristic thriller 2012, and The Raven and is active on Twitter, but what about the rest of the cast? Here is what happened to the cast after filming that classic dark comedy in 1985. Demian Slade As paperboy Johnny Gasparini he hunted down the Myer family for his

Better off Dead is far and away one of the most random and incredibly funny movies of the 80s. It came to us from Savage Steve Holland who also directed One Crazy Summer and How I got Into College. However I think most would agree that Better off Dead was his crowning achievement. The movie starred John Cusack but I think all the highlights went to guys like Curtis Armstrong who played Charles DeMar and characters like Ricky Fitts and the Asian Guy who talked like Howard Cosell (who also played the villain in Karate Kid II). It was just

Full disclosure: The Amityville Horror films do not make up my favorite franchise. And it has nothing to do with the central “haunted house” premise, but rather the execution of the series thus far, from the serviceable ground zero template, The Amityville Horror (1979) through the (as yet unseen) upcoming Amityville: The Awakening, with some stops in between at DTVville (not to mention the Ryan Reynolds remake; but I said not to mention, so not mention I shall). The name is so shopworn now that “Amityville” has become synonymous with “poopy”.
But, but, But…let’s rewind to a time when a follow up to the kind-of goofy James Brolin (and his glorious perm) starrer was actually anticipated. That film was a smash success at the box office, and the powers that be wanted to revisit the village of Amityville to see what other demons they could find in the basement.

If you’re an 80s kid like me you might remember a trio of movies that absolutely rocked. In 1985 we were treated to the classic “Better off Dead” starring John Cusak. In 1986 it was “One Crazy Summer” and then in 1989 we saw “How I Got into College.” These were all films that brought a kind of comedy we had not seen before. Combining the elements of animation and just sheer weirdness, director Savage Steve Holland created a type of movie that if anything, shocked us into laughing. The movies were just so random and yet so funny that

It’s interesting when comparing Richard Linklater’s latest to the frat/high-school/summer-camp comedies made at the time it is set. With this new segment we’re going to examine some incredible 80s songs that most of us would probably be embarrassed to play in front of people but by ourselves we would totally rock out to. My stance is to never be embarrassed by any song that you like. If a song rules, then it rules, period. And this song? This song absolutely rules. You might remember it as the main ballad from the movie “Better off Dead,” an 80s comedy which starred John Cusack as a lonely, depressed guy just looking for love…and ways to kill himself. There’s just something

With noticeable nods to "Porky's," "Better Off Dead," and "Hot Dog...The Movie," "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is keen on keeping themselves fresh by parodying the films and TV shows that the creators grew up loving. Somewhere out there, a paperboy is still looking for his "two dollars."
It's been three decades, but we're still chuckling at the absurdly surreal "Better Off Dead." When it opened 30 years ago (on August 23, 1985), the dark comedy about a lovelorn suicidal teen cemented John Cusack's newly-minted leading man status. It also introduced moviegoers to the warped sense of humor of director Savage Steve Holland.
Since then, Cusack has enjoyed a celebrated career, while his castmates have taken paths as twisted as the movie that made them famous. Here's what's become of the "Better Off Dead" players in the years since they brought us one-legged ski races, dancing hamburgers, and vengeful newsboys.

As such, a new top ten list is here for your reading pleasure. This one obviously looks at Cusack’s best so far, which sadly has yet to garner him an Academy Award nomination. All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Click here for a complete list of our essays. How to decide in the grand scheme of things which film year stands above all others? History gives us no clear methodology to unravel this thorny but extremely important question. Is it the year with the highest average score of movies? So a year that averages out to a B + might be the winner over a field strewn with B’s, despite a few A +’s. Or do a few masterpieces lift up a year so far that whatever else happened beyond those three or four films is of no consequence? Both measures are worthy, and the winner by either of those would certainly be a year not to be sneezed at. But I contend the only true measure of a year’s...

Blade Runner is the movie that all the other “sci-fi” films of the last 20 years have been trying, unsuccessfully, to live up to. Some of them have achieved more compelling action, some spiffy CGI effects, but none of them can match the grandeur of this film’s vision or its colorful gallery of characters. It’s a film meant to be savored on the big screen and lucky St. Louis film fans will have that opportunity this weekend midnights at The Tivoli.
