You remind me of the babe? What babe? The babe with the massive cult following! Nearly 40 years since its release, Labyrinth has endured as one of the most beloved fantasy movies ever. While it was a flop at the box office, the movie would go on to embody so much of what makes the genre what it is, not to mention it being a charming – and sometimes frightening – representation of the brilliance of cinematic puppetry.
Like so many of our favorite movies, when it comes down to it, the box office numbers never mattered. That’s definitely the case with Labyrinth, which took in just under $13 million domestically on a budget reportedly around double that. Jennifer Connelly remembered “hearing rumblings” of it being poorly attended at the multiplex but that it eventually found its fandom. “People’s affection has grown over the years. People talk to me about it in...

Following the massive success of “Dune: Part Two,” director Denis Villeneuve may have found his next project.
The filmmaker is in discussion to reunite with Legendary for an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s Pulitzer Prize finalist “Nuclear War: A Scenario,” Variety has confirmed. Legendary also confirmed that it is working with Villeneuve to develop a third “Dune” film.
Legendary optioned the feature film rights to Jacobsen’s nonfiction book; Villeneuve is currently in talks with the studio to produce, adapt and/or director. His producing partner Tanya Lapointe would also be a part of the project.
Released on March 26, Jacobsen’s book “explores a ticking-clock scenario about what would happen in the event of a nuclear war, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who built the weapons and have been privy to the response plans and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made.

No one envies the biographer to a truly great writer. But in “Dario Argento Panico,” director Simone Scafidi takes on a task even more daunting — profiling one of the best filmmakers to ever live in his own medium.
The two artists, forever bonded by an appreciation for the 83-year-old Italian’s otherworldly filmography, take turns illuminating the mystery behind giallo masterworks like “Deep Red” and “Suspiria” (1977) in Shudder’s essential and ethereal portrait. Astounding archival footage and insightful new interviews pay taut homage to Argento’s exacting style and near-impenetrable public persona, allowing the still-working cinematic legend to vivisect his life and legacy as others do the same. The result is an accessible yet effervescent retrospective on the auteur who has become synonymous with chiaroscuro nightmares: a tightly constructed character study that will initiate unfamiliar viewers with a thorough and thought-provoking primer, while simultaneously giving lifelong fans a better understanding...

Ahead of the Jan 20 launch of Frightfest Saturday Scares With Alan Jones on Fast TV channel Nyx, Alan recounts his rise to journalistic prominence – from stealing shocker posters and partying with Abba to falling out with filmmakers and writing his upcoming autobiography.
Did you know from a young age that you wanted to be a journalist?
No, I loved horror and fantasy movies from the age of ten, or rather the idea of them because obviously I couldn’t go to the cinema and see anything of that nature. I read horror novels nonstop, stole shocker posters pasted up on the billboards at the end of my street, cut out all the wonderfully lurid adverts from newspapers and pasted them into scrapbooks. I was literally waiting for the moment I could pass for sixteen so I could get into X films and start watching all the movies I was desperate to catch up on.

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Alongside exclusives like Secret Santa and Night of the Missing and such classics as Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, here are five Christmas horror recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Christmas Evil
Not to be confused with the innumerable Santa slashers, Christmas Evil (also known as You Better Watch Out) is tonally more in line with Taxi Driver than Silent Night, Deadly Night. Writer-director Lewis Jackson clearly had no interest in making a body count flick; instead, he explores the psyche of a mentally unstable man who happens to dress up as Santa and kill people. The low-budget grit adds to the dark atmosphere.

“Tonight we have special news for you: we closed all the exits. You can’t escape,” Claudio Simonetti deadpanned in his Italian accent to the enthusiastic crowd at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, Massachusetts on October 3. Clad in something like a ringmaster jacket over a Deadpool T-shirt, a smile beamed across the maestro’s face.
The audience erupted into laughter chased by cheers, as they knew they were about to experience something special: the 1985 cult classic Demons on the big screen with a live score performed by Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin, a modern tribute to the prolific Italian prog-rock composers Goblin fronted by the founding keyboardist.

Stars: Pedro Casablanc, Víctor Clavijo, Ruth Díaz, Moisés Ruiz, Manuel Morón | Written and Directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez
Writer/director F. Javier Gutiérrez returned to his native Spain to make his third film La Espera, or, in English, The Wait. It’s a title that refers not just to the passage of time but to the ten hunting stands on the estate of Don Francisco. They are watched over by Eladio, who lives on the remote property with his wife Marcia, and their son, Floren (Moisés Ruiz).
At the start of the 1973 hunting season, he’s told by Don Carlos, Don Francisco’s right-hand man, to surreptitiously add three more. At first, he refuses, saying that would crowd the hunting parties and be unsafe due to the risk of crossfires. Eventually, he relents, a decision he soon regrets when Floren is killed in a freak accident leading to Marcia’s suicide.

A Catholic schoolgirl is convinced tonight is her last night on Earth and decides to attend a costume party with her best friend. Set in 1967 during Mardi Gras. Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin Hitting the Road to Play Live ‘Demons’ Score Across the Country This Fall
Following last year’s Suspiria tour, Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin is hitting the road this fall to perform the live score to Demons followed by a set of other classic Goblin compositions across North America.
Goblin founding keyboardist Claudio Simonetti plays with a new manifestation of the prolific Italian instrumental act that includes guitarist Daniele Amador, bassist Cecilia Nappo, and drummer Federico Maragoni.
In addition to the Demons dates, the band will play a best-of set at Eerie Horror Fest in Pennsylvania, while the tour’s Canadian stops will feature a Suspiria live score.
Produced by master of horror Dario Argento, 1985’s Demons is directed by Lamberto Bava from a script he co-wrote with Argento, Dardano Sacchetti (The Beyond), and Franco Ferrini (Phenomena). Simonetti composed the original soundtrack, which he has updated with his live band.

After the trainwreck that was Cocaine Shark and with the spectre of Jurassic Shark 3: Seavenge looming over me, The Black Demon, or any other shark film for that matter, may not have been an obvious choice. But this one caught my attention when it was announced and the idea of a finned fear film with enough of a budget to give it some bite was hard to say no to.
Paul Sturges is the safety officer for Nixon Oil, a corporate name that does not exactly inspire confidence. He has been sent to Baja to inspect one of the company’s rigs and has brought his family along. He may have to work but his wife Ines, daughter, Audrey, and son Tommy can have a vacation.

So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”

Phenomena is a substantially different movie depending on how you first saw it. Audiences in its native Italy were able to see the original 116-minute film as director Dario Argento intended for its initial release in 1985. That cut was pruned down to 110 minutes for international release. In America, however, New Line Cinema cut the picture to 83 minutes before putting it out under the title Creepers in 1986. Finding its audience in the VHS rental market, this was the only version available in the US until DVD came around.
Each version has its advantages and disadvantages. The original integral cut contains everything, but it drags a bit in the middle and there are a few moments that were never dubbed into English. The international version is a bit tighter, mostly trimming frames and sacrificing only a few lines of dialogue. Those who grew up with the Creepers cut may prefer its punchier pace,...

We have a very eclectic mix of Blu-rays for you in this latest Blu-ray column. In fact, I can't remember a time when I've rounded up such an odd assortment of films. Not only do we have the new 4K release of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," but we also have the animated "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," the beautiful drama "The Remains of the Day," and Dario Argento's "Phenomena" just to cap things off. Like I said: eclectic.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 4K
Often copied, never duplicated, there will never be anything like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" again. Even after all these years, Tobe Hooper's tale of some travelers who run afoul of a cannibal family is terrifying. Why? Because it feels like something we shouldn't be seeing. The rough, raw style makes the entire movie feel like a documentary; like someone created a...

Brazil’s premiere genre film festival, Phenomena Fest, honors The Alien Report with its prestigious Night Mask Award for best indie feature film. Presented in a ‘selfie’ Pov format, this UFO feature-length movie follows a deaf young man who secretly records his UFO encounters using tiny, hidden micro cameras. Filmed in a non-traditional format using body-cameras and Go Pros, The Alien Report is winning festivals around the world.
Alien Report brings in its DNA everything that Phenomena values as art. Audacious storytelling, exquisite execution and an independent spirit willing to take risks and create something truly original. We live on the threshold of a new era, and the topic of non-human intelligences and their interference with our society is gaining prominence. Although we remain without hard proof, thousands of people report abduction experiences. Alien Report approaches the theme with dynamism, passion and creativity, the result is a unique and impactful film that deserves attention.

Music is intrinsically and irrevocably intertwined with cinema; it is never more vital than in horror. What builds mood, tension, and fear better than sound design and an unsettling score?
This Gift Guide is for the music lover. More specifically, it’s for the horror fan that collects vinyl soundtracks, from recent releases to recently unearthed rarities and beyond.
Here’s what you need this year…

Korven is a Toronto-based award winning composer and multi-instrumentalist. He is known for his innovation and experimental approach to film scoring. 45 years after its release, Dario Argento‘s Suspiria remains one of the most breathtaking horror films ever committed to celluloid. Its unparalleled visuals – vibrantly colored lighting, unconventional camerawork, opulent production design, extravagant death scenes – are complemented by a memorable score from frequent Argento collaborators, Goblin.
Goblin founding keyboardist Claudio Simonetti now performs with a new manifestation of the prolific Italian instrumental act – officially branded as Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin to avoid confusion with the other incarnation of Goblin featuring different legacy members that remains active concurrently.
Simonetti is accompanied by guitarist Daniele Amador, bassist Cecilia Nappo, and drummer Federico Maragoni. Together they’re celebrating Suspiria‘s 45th anniversary with a tour in which they perform the score live to the film followed by a set of other Goblin classics. I caught the sold-out stop at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville, Ma on November 8.

I will be the first to admit that streaming debates are not my thing. The vast amount of streaming services that are out there right now makes it extremely hard to navigate the media landscape, and the market seems to be inching closer to reinventing cable. All I want to do is watch my silly little programs -- I don't want to spend minutes combing through different libraries and searching "[Insert Movie Here] streaming" on Google to do so! Unfortunately, this is the climate that I and many others must navigate, and because I'm not smart enough to think of a better solution, I must do the best with what I have.
If you're a horror fan like I am, then navigating the streaming world is even harder. There are just so many movies that either aren't available, are only available on the most niche service possible, or have some sort of limitation to the version that's streaming.

When the fearful Anna is home alone, the two men drop by for a visit that quickly turns violent and terrifying. Husband Georg comes to her rescue, but Paul and Peter take the family hostage and subject them to nightmarish abuse and humiliation. What do you think of when you think of a Dario Argento movie? "Goblin" music? A garish giallo color palettes? Bad English dubbing? All of the above are Argento trademarks, but there's one other key ingredient: gallons of blood. The director revels in subjecting his characters to grisly demises. Other directors might be content with deaths lasting a few seconds and shocking the audience for as long. Argento's characters, though, suffer drawn-out deaths that run for whole minutes. Usually, it's a death by a thousand cuts too.
Take "Suspiria": The first casualty comes when Pat Hingle (Eva Axén) is grabbed then stabbed by an unseen attacker; there's a close-up of the knife penetrating her exposed heart. Pat's corpse is flung through a stained glass ceiling with a noose around her neck and the falling glass splits her friend Sonia's (Susanna Javicoli) head in half.
The most outrageous Argento death is in his 1987 "Opera.

Italy’s storied Titanus studio, producers of myriad golden era Cinema Italiano works, is getting a reboot and reviving its production side with several projects in development, including a contemporary sequel of Dario Argento’s supernatural chiller “Phenomena.”
Established in 1904 by Gustavo Lombardo, Titanus was a true Italian major, which during the 1960s forged a partnership with MGM. They slowed down considerably from the mid-1960s onwards after Luchino Visconti’s lavish Sicily-set costumer “The Leopard” (1963), starring Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon, went way over budget. Since the mid-1980s the studio’s output has been on a much smaller scale, and primarily for TV.
Now led by former Disney Italy marketing chief Stefano Bethlen, who is Titanus’ general manager, the company – which has a 400-title library comprising early works by Italian masters such as Federico Fellini, and Visconti classics, alongside plenty of genre fare – is ramping up...

Stop stressing over what to watch this Halloween and instead turn to this varied mix of horror titles, both old and new, from Shudder’s library
Every streaming service turns Halloween into an opportunity to showcase what horror genre heavy hitters they have in their library. But there’s extra pressure for a service like Shudder (also available on AMC+), which specifically zeroes in on horror programming, to go all-out when it comes to the Halloween season.
Shudder has more than 600 horror films in its growing library with dozens more having been added to the mix this October as part of their intensive “Home for Halloween” celebration. As such, it can sometimes be even more difficult to figure out the perfect viewing schedule when there are so many options at one’s disposal.

Hello, everyone! We’re back after a brief hiatus to give you a look at the horror and sci-fi headed home this week on home media. As it turns out, the month of August’s releases are starting off on a quiet note, as we have two titles getting the 4K treatment this Tuesday—Dario Argento’s Tenebrae and Flatliners from Joel Schumacher—and then a handful of indie horror arriving on both Blu-ray and DVD: Scream at the Devil, Paranormal Devil, The Farm, and Joker’s Poltergeist.
Flatliners 4K

Known for his impressively eclectic filmography and for helping to launch the careers of several young Hollywood stars of the 80s and 90s, Joel Schumacher tackles the existential question that, at one time or another, haunts us all: what awaits us after we die?

We’re a little bit late for Insect Week, which ended on June 26 this year, but any time’s a good time to celebrate the bugs and critters who have crept and crawled their way onto our cinema screens - from silent incarnations like Wladyslaw Starewicz’s The Insects Christmas, which you can watch at the end of this feature, through horror films like Phenomena and animation to documentary. So this week we’re tuning our antennae to a few of the best.

This vibrant animation brings a whole new meaning to the instruction, "Ladybird, ladybird fly away home", as one of the little insects sneaks out from hibernation only to end up taking an unexpected trip to the Caribbean, with a parent in tow. We see how the pair of them cope and make new friends on Guadeloupe at the same time...

It’s impossible to imagine the films of Dario Argento without the eerie, one-of-a-kind tunes that play over the stunning images, many of which were contributed by the Italian progressive rock band known as Goblin. The unmistakable sounds of Goblin can be heard in Dario Argento horror classics including Suspiria and Deep Red, along with Phenomena […]

Dario Argento’s chilling giallo aesthetic kicks off the summer season at Film at Lincoln Center.
IndieWire exclusively announces “Beware of Dario Argento: A 20-Film Retrospective” hosted by Film at Lincoln Center and Cinecittà. The retrospective rolls out from June 17 through 29, and ushers in the third decade of collaboration between Film at Lincoln Center and Italian state-owned film archive Cinecittà, whose main shareholder is the Italian Ministry of Culture.
Argento’s vast catalog of classic films like “Suspiria” and “Inferno,” both part of the “Three Mothers” trilogy, debut new 4K restorations by Cinecittà. Seventeen films are newly restored. At 81, Italian horror maestro Dario Argento is busier than ever.
The director of a string of cult chiller classics starting in the 1970s, including “The Bird With the Crystal Plumage,” “Suspiria” and “Deep Red,” was at Cannes last July with his acting debut in Gaspar Noe’s “Vortex,” about a pair of old lovers. Argento was also celebrated last year with a new book by Italian critic Steve Della Casa and a retro at New York’s Lincoln Center. This spring he’s set to be honored with a big show at Italy’s National Museum of Cinema in Turin.
More significantly, having returned to the director’s chair after a decade, Argento is back with “Dark Glasses,” which he describes as a classic thriller, or giallo, as the violent crime genre is known in Italy.

This dark fairy tale is an expression of Pitt’s own sexual abuse survival story and a love note to the monsters and fantastic worlds that helped her survive.
According to Pitt, “This story is very personal, because I was this little girl. I used my imagination to escape from an abusive childhood; I used books, movies and toys to get away. If I didn't have my...
