How is it forty years since 1984?? Well, that’s just how time works, my friends. It was a time before mobile phones. Before the internet. Before we got worried about and then forgot about Y2K. It was the year in which George Orwell envisioned a world of doublethink, room 101 and Big Brother. And it was several years before Room 101 and Big Brother would come to mean TV shows and not dystopian ideals. But we digress…
Fortunately, the very nature of films is that the passing of time does not erode the quality of a classic movie, and even more fortunately, 1984 was absolutely packed with them.

Did you spot all the references? Can you always notice them all? Madman Films has debuted a wonderful new promo video for the beloved animated film Robot Dreams, which first premiered at the 2023 Cannes & Annecy Film Festivals last year. The film also snuck in and ended up nominated for Best Animated Film at the 2024 Academy Awards earlier this year, but it didn't win. This fun 60-second video examines references in this movie that are inspired by other shots & scenes in other classic movies - including from Manhattan, The Wizard of Oz, The Big Lebowski, and Psycho. A story about friendship, its importance, and its fragility. The dialogue-free animated film is based on the popular graphic novel by Sara Varon, about the adventures and misfortunes of Dog and Robot in NYC during the '80s. Dog is lonely so he orders a Robot companion, but then Robot gets stuck in the...

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Alex Divincenzo revisits the great slasher slump of 1989.
While horror fans often look back on the ’80s with a nostalgic glow, 1989 was not what most would consider a strong year for the genre — particularly when compared to the embarrassment of riches spawned by the rest of the decade. Not even Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger were safe from the slasher slump.
Each franchise had its ups and downs across a cumulative 17 movies in the ’80s, but the decade came to a close with low points — creatively and financially — in all three sagas: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.

Cillian Murphy first cut his teeth at the Corcadorca Theatre Company in his hometown of Cork, Ireland at the age of 20, where he nailed the audition for his first acting role in Enda Walsh’s “Disco Pigs” play. Murphy made enough of an impression to not only land the role for the theater part, but he also starred in the film adaptation years later. Although the movie wasn’t necessarily a renowned success, his performance caught the eye of Danny Boyle: the legendary filmmaker, then searching for a lead in his post-apocalyptic thriller, “28 Days Later.” That movie would significantly boost Murphy’s profile, earning him nominations for Best Newcomer at the Empire Awards and Breakthrough Male Performance at the MTV Movie Awards.
With 40 movies and 27 years to his career, Murphy seems to be progressing with each appearance, and his latest role was his biggest yet. As the titular...

Robert Downey Jr. has taken the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a motion picture drama for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Universal’s Oppenheimer. This was Downey Jr.’s fifth Golden Globe nomination and third win.
“Yeah, yeah, I took a Beta blocker so this is going to be a breeze,” a clearly exhuberant Downey Jr. began his acceptance speech tonight.” A sweeping story about the ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons grosses 1 billion dollars, does that track? No, unless and but because Universal went all in on Christopher Nolan, to direct Cillian Murphy with Emma Thomas producing with Emily [Blunt] and Florence [Pugh] and this cast and crew and helped them render a goddamn masterpiece.”
Downey Jr. also gave a shout-out to his agents, whom he referred to as his dueling career counsels. “They had the gall to say I needed to re-start my career, it’s so fun proving agents right.

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer sits at $942 million at the worldwide box office, which makes it the highest-grossing biopic of all time, but it’s a genre label that the director disputes.
Christopher Nolan recently spoke at a City University of New York event alongside producer Emma Thomas and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Kai Bird, who co-wrote the novel on which Oppenheimer is based. When asked why Oppenheimer doesn’t include aspects of the title character’s childhood, Nolan rejected the idea of the biopic.
“There is a tendency in biography post-Freud to attribute characteristics of the person you’re dealing with to their genetics from their parents. It’s a very reductive view of a human being,” Nolan said. “If you’re writing a book that’s 500 pages or 1,000 pages, there’s a way to balance that with their individuality and experiences. When you compress and strip down to the necessary simplicity of a screenplay,...

It’s been a decade since Chvrches first released The Bones of What You Believe. Now, the band is honoring their celebrated debut album with a 10th anniversary reissue, which features four previously-unheard songs and five live recordings from 2013.
“It feels quite strange that Bones is almost a decade old,” vocalist Lauren Mayberry said in a statement. “In some ways, it’s like it just happened, but also like that era was a lifetime ago. We are very grateful to all the fans who gave that album a special place in their heart, and still show us so much kindness today.”
One of the newly-unearthed songs is “Manhattan,” which was written right as that era from a “lifetime ago” was first beginning. As the band’s Iain Cook explained, it was the fourth song Chvrches ever worked on. “It was the first time we messed around with sampling and chopping up our vocals,...

With immense anticipation, ‘Oppenheimer’—the Christopher Nolan biopic about the “father of the atomic bomb” starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, a leader in the infamous Manhattan Project during WWII.
Nevertheless, the movie dives deeper than just Oppenheimer’s iconic discovery. It also inspects his ties with the Communist Party and later investigation into his reliability amid the 1950s Red Scare hysteria.
He’s joined by Emily Blunt as his wife Kitty, Matt Damon as Lt. General Leslie Groves, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss—will be premiering on July 21st.

In 1989, Friday the 13th transplanted its hockey-masked slasher from summer camp to concrete jungle for the franchise’s eighth installment, Jason Takes Manhattan. That titular promise was not fully delivered upon: Manhattan was mostly Vancouver and Jason spent much of the running time on a boat full of high schoolers traveling to the city. Zach Braff is opening up about falling under the spell of the manic pixie dream girl male fantasy.
The “Garden State” director has been criticized for perpetuating the trope most prominently in his 2004 directorial debut starring Natalie Portman. The manic pixie dream girl label refers to unconventional, one-dimensional female characters who ultimately ease the lead male character’s existential despair and change his perspective on life.
“I was just copying Diane Keaton in ‘Annie Hall’ and Ruth Gordon in ‘Harold and Maude,'” Braff told The Independent about crafting Portman’s character Sam. “Those were my two favorite movies growing up, and I was kind of taking those two female protagonists and melding them into Natalie Portman.”
Braff added, “Of course I’ve heard and respect the criticism, but I was a very depressed young man who had this fantasy of a dream girl coming along and saving me from myself,...

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream, Ready or Not) are back behind the camera for Scream VI, now playing in movie theaters nationwide.
In the brand new movie, “The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”
That means we can expect themes and character arcs introduced in 2022’s Scream to deepen. With Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett at the helm, that also means brand new Easter eggs and franchise nods nestled within the slasher thrill ride. The franchise, since its inception, revolves around its commentary and reverence for the horror genre, after all.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with the directors ahead of the film’s release. They explained that they couldn’t resist one of the more obvious references regarding their New York City set sequel: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.

Plot: A year after the horrors that took place for Sam and Tara Carpenter, the creepy Ghostface returns to terrorize the siblings and their pals. And this time, it all takes place in the Big Apple.
Review: “What’s your favorite scary movie?” Most horror fans know who is calling when they hear that voice on the other end of the phone. And yes, Ghostface is back. Since its debut with the original Scream in 1996, it became a solid series of modern slasher fun. Let’s face it; when arguably the worst film in it is Scream 3, you aren’t doing too bad. Even that flick offered clever cameos and had wildly engaging sequences. And with last year’s revival giving audiences a couple of new leads with Jenny Ortega and Melissa Barrera, it still made for an enjoyable entry. In New York, everyone can hear you scream. But will they really care? In the city that never sleeps, evil lurks around every corner, ready to strike whenever one's guard is let down for just a moment. Sure, it's a gorgeous, bustling metropolis, but if horror movies have taught audiences anything, it's that the Big Apple packs some big scares. Tyler Gillett & Matt Bettinelli-Olpin surprised fans with their very funny, very bloody 2022 "Scream" reboot. For the sixth entry, the duo have supplanted Woodsboro, California, in favor of New York City, letting Ghostface get bigger, meaner, and deadlier.
Shooting in the actual city can be costly, likely accounting for just how few true New York horror stories there really are. Often, Manhattan is merely used as a backdrop, the horror features never fully taking advantage of the distinct iconography or scale for something truly terrifying. Some have, however, and here, we'll...

Unlike Jason Voorhees, it appears that when Ghostface takes Manhattan, he makes quite the night of it! That is certainly the implication from the first wave of social media reactions to Scream 6 from critics and film journalists who saw the movie this week.
As a rapid follow up to last year’s Scream legacy sequel (aka Scream 5), the sixth chapter in the franchise has had a large groundswell of anticipation going for it in recent months. The viral success of the hype is likely due to a few factors, not least of which is that the directing/producing team of Radio Silence’s last stab at the Scream franchise was so well received. Throw in the new A-list status of star Jenna Ortega after last year’s Wednesday phenomenon and the radical departure from Scream formula by setting Scream 6 in New York City and you have a...

Seinfeld character George Costanza was based on co-creator Larry David. Jason Alexander embodied him on Seinfeld and created an indelible character. You can only tell the same old slasher story so many times before it gets stale, and that’s why so many horror franchises eventually find the need to escape the confines of their original small-town settings and have their villains invade larger urban centers. And if you’re going to set your story in a big city, why not the most recognizable metropolis of all, New York?
Urban horror might not be as common as scary movies about Transylvanian castles and cursed cabins in the middle of nowhere, but we’ve seen a plethora of NYC-set horror flicks over the years. And in honor of Scream VI also choosing to relocate the action to the city that never sleeps, we’ve come up with this list celebrating six of the best horror movies set in NYC.

Gordon Willis is considered by many to be one of the greatest cinematographers in the history of cinema, with his work on films like "The Godfather" trilogy, "Annie Hall," "Manhattan," and "Klute" hailed as the definitive cinematic look of the late 1970s. Willis was given the nickname "The Prince of Darkness" by fellow cinematographer Conrad Hall, a reference to Willis' sophisticated use of shadow and underexposed film. Think of Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone in "The Godfather," often cloaked in shadow just as dark as his pitch-black tuxedo jacket.
Willis' skills were on another level, and in our current era where everything seems to be plagued by a curse of darkness, it's a shame that more cinematographers aren't looking toward his example. Fortunately, director Benjamin Caron of "Andor" fame specifically wanted to channel the work of Gordon Willis for his upcoming A24 thriller with Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan, "Sharper.

The Arrow in the Head Show hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are clearly two guys who are after my own heart. I say this because Friday the 13th is my favorite franchise, so I find that I can never go too long without watching a Friday the 13th movie. The Arrow and Lance seem to be right there with me, because they talk about Friday the 13th movies with some frequency – and in the latest episode of The Arrow in the Head Show, they’re taking a deep dive into the 1989 sequel Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (watch it Here)! Yet somehow, Marvel has done something surprising with its upcoming release by creating a tie-in no one would've expected for "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania": a book. This isn't a comic book, either, but a meta memoir courtesy of Ant-Man himself, Scott Lang. To make things even stranger (and funnier), the studio also just dropped a promo for the book featuring Paul Rudd – as himself.
Get ready for your life to (maybe) change: Rudd legally can't make any promises about "Look Out For The Little Guy," the 256-page book that Marvel fans can really buy from major retailers, but he thinks it might be a little life-changing. "Oh, hello, didn't see you there!" Rudd says in the promo for the book...

As society evolves, moments in films that were once beloved can start to sour in history’s proverbial rear-view mirror. When Sandy (Olivia Newton John) revamps her entire look and personality to please her boyfriend Danny (John Travolta) at the end of Grease (1978), for example. Or when the cartoon crows in Disney’s animated classic Dumbo are literally called “The Jim Crows”.
Even plenty of Academy Award-winning movies have not aged particularly well. As the 94th Academy Awards approach this Sunday (27 March), here are 10 Oscar-winning films that are problematic in 2021.
Green Book (2018)
When Green Book, which won Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards, arrived in cinemas a few years back, it quickly became a divisive topic of conversation. The picture, starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen, enjoyed early success with audiences and sailed through awards season, but critics lambasted it as being shortsighted in its depiction of race relations.

Chicago – With drag in its spotlight, but relationships at its core, the comedy “Chrissy Judy” screens on the first weekend of Chicago’s iconic REELING40 LGBTQ+ International Film Festival on Sunday, September 23rd, 2022 (6:30p). Writer/director Todd Flaherty will appear on behalf of the film, click Chrissy Judy for info and tickets.
Two drag queens who have an act are motivated by “Judy,” who has been described as a free spirit, a great one-night stand and in favor of staying unattached, and is partnered with his bestie Chrissy, who is harboring a secret love. This was supposed to be the summer it all comes together for the queens, so when Chrissy abruptly announces that he’s moving from New York to live with his boyfriend, a disillusioned Judy is left to examine his life and priorities – both onstage and off.
