John Ottman, who recently won his first Ace Eddie Award for 20th Century Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody, made the cut again by winning the film editing Oscar on Sunday.
The Eddies have a long track record of predicting the Best Editing winner at the Academy Awards. Twenty-one of the past 28 Ace winners for best edited dramatic film and 10 of the past 14 have gone on to score the Oscar, including last year, when Lee Smith won for Dunkirk.
Who gets the credit? Mom and Dad. Ottman waved to his 85-year-old mother in the audience from the stage, and said his Oscar would go on his parents’ mantel “because they encouraged me to do whatever I wanted to do as a kid.”
And as a shout-out to Freddie Mercury, he quoted Eddie’s parents from the film: “Good thoughts, good words, good deeds.”
Ottman holds dual distinctions as film composer and film editor.

Special effects legend Ray Harryhausen, whose dazzling and innovative visual effects work on fantasy adventure films such as Jason And The Argonauts and The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad passed away in 2013 at age 92. Josh Olson on Noir! continues at Trailers from Hell, with screenwriter Olson introducing 1953's "Wicked Woman," starring Richard Egan as a small-town barkeep and perennial femme fatale Beverly Michaels as the sexy drifter who has his number. The memories of movie fans are papered with the work of the remarkably prolific producer Edward Small, ranging from such sophisticated fare as Witness for the Prosecution to boomer favorites like Jack The Giant Killer and It, The Terror From Beyond Space. In 1953 Small produced Wicked Woman, a memorably sleazy but amusingly self-aware noir out of the Jim Thompson playbook. Directed by Russell Rouse (The Oscar), and co-starring Percy Helton, the high-pitched gnome from so many other essential noirs including Kiss Me Deadly and Criss Cross.

The fine folks at the MGM Limited Edition DVD-r dove deep into their vaults to present a groovy sixties ghoulfest on DVD for all you fear fans. Doctor Blood’S Coffin was a staple of late night TV and horror hosts for several decades ( Chicago’s Svengoolie featured it 1998 ). It’s bright color photography made it a valuable asset to stations wanting a break from the black and white classics. Of course Coffin may owe its existence to the success of Hammer Films’ color fright fests of the late 1950′s. After the box office numbers generated by these new takes on Frankenstein and Dracula, many other British studios wanted a piece of the growing thriller audience. Caralan Productions even went as far as hiring the beautiful ( and buxom ) Hazel Court ( Peter Cushing’s doomed love from Hammer’s hit The Curse Of Frankenstein ) as the leading lady. Perhaps due to budgetary constraints,...

Movies from the “golden age” of black and white films (approximately the 1930’s through the 1950’s) almost invariably contain well-written dialogue and strikingly subtle humor, making them a favorite among many fans of cinema. The horror movies of this more subtle period in film history are therefore of a cerebral nature, primarily relying on the viewer’s imagination to generate the true sense of horror that modern movies generate through more visual means. It is these oft-ignored horror movies that will be the focus of a series of articles detailing the reasons why true fans of horror movies should rediscover these films.
Here we are with the 10th component in the Forgotten B&W Horror series. With this installment, we continue to look at movies that blur the line between horror and science fiction – a blurring that occurred with many sci-fi movies of the 1950′s.

Fairy tales, legends and mythology seem to be all the rage these days and the revival of these ancient tales proves that great stories are relevant in any age. Feeding our fascination once again is New Line Cinema and Legendary Pictures. Bryan Singer is going to be directing the 3D version of Jack the Giant Killer which is slated to hit theaters in the summer of 2012.
This version of Jack the Giant Killer will be the second film based on the English fairy tale that has origins that can be traced back to the year 1711. The first Jack the Giant Killer was made in 1962 and starred Kerwin Mathews as Jack complete with Ray Harryhausen-style stop-motion animation.
Nicholas Hoult has been cast in the title role of Jack in the new epic 3D adventure “Jack the Giant Killer”.

The 1962 Nathan Juran version of Jack the Giant Killer gave me nightmares when I was a kid. A specific scene involving the unmasking of a witch by placing her in front of a mirror stuck with me and I’m hoping that Bryan Singer will be kinder to sensitive children when his re-telling of the story arrives in cinemas in 2012.
Nicholas Hoult, whose rising star has already shone brightly in Tom Ford’s A Single Man, is cast in the lead alongside Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, Ewan McGregor and Eddie Mardsen and the last two on the list were recently spotted on the set of the film.

MGM has targeted Brazilian director Jose Padilha to direct their remake of 1987's Robocop. Padilha is most known for directing the Brazilian crime dramas Elite Force and Elite Force 2: The Enemy Within. The latter of which grossed over $60 million in Brazil alone last year, while the original won the Golden Bear at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival against the likes of There Will Be Blood and Happy-Go-Lucky. Deadline reports the studio will set a writer to work under Padilha's supervision once the director is aboard.

Chris Columbus is not expected to return to direct the sequel, though be will produce the picture. He must be off on some exploration.

One by one, the list of hot projects that all the actors in Hollywood (and elsewhere) are chasing has been ticked off as high-profile roles such as Captain America, Jack the Giant Killer and Spider-Man have been filled. But there always seem to be new ones cropping up to replace them, and the latest part generating some hefty buzz is Tony Gilroy’s Bourne series spin-off, The Bourne Legacy. According to Deadline, the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Tobey Maguire, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch and Benjamin Walker have all either taken meetings with the writer/director or are being considered. What, no Sam Worthington? That’s certainly a long list, and though it’s understandable why just about every young actor would want a crack at it, several of those names above are the repeat...

The full interview at Bleeding Cool is huge so I left a few bits n pieces out. Be sure to click the link back to them below to read the full thing, with updates on Mad Max: Fury Road and Jack The Giant Killer. Anyway, here are the highlights.. On the character of Hank McCoy/Beast.. As a character, I find Beast is fantastic, he is my favourite in a way. There’s this inner tension, because he’s a scientist, and a careful man, and a worldly man, and he has this crazy exterior. He’s scary. ..I hope the fans will like this version as much (as the original). ..in this film it’s more, he’s a young scientist. He’s very intelligent, obviously, and creates great inventions. But there’s also this side of him where you have this conflict of wanting to be normal and wanting to fit in.

Just the other day it was reported that Singer had attached Stanley Tucci as the villain in Jack the Giant Killer, with Nicholas Hoult (X-men: First Class) in the front-runner for the lead as Jack (here). Deadline Hollywood is now reporting that Hoult has been offered the role, and is currently in negotiations. The deal is expected to close quickly, and will be Hoult’s biggest role so far. Hoult and Singer worked together on Matthew Vuaghn’s X-men: First Class, which Singer used as a way to cast this film.

Following on the heels of his soon to be co-stars Bill Nighy and Stanley Tucci, things are getting very interesting our own Nicholas Hoult who is working out a deal to sign in Bryan Singer’s Jack The Giant Killer. This confirms the story we ran in December last year putting Hoult fellow Brit Aaron Johnson in the frame.

Roles in the aforementioned X-Men film and Mad Max: Fury Road are in his future but the leading role in Singer’s film is his most visible role so far.

Famke Janssen has signed to play the leader of a witch coven in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters opposite Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton.
The script, written by D.W. Harper (who also wrote the excellent Black List favorite All You Need Is Kill), picks up 15 years after the traumatic events of the fairy tale when the title characters are adults bent on revenge against all cannibal witches.
Fairy tales are hot in Hollywood at the moment with no less than three Snow White features in development, a Red Riding Hood film in post-production, and Jack the Giant Killer in casting, plus live-action updates of Mulan, Little Mermaid, and Tinkerbell all on the way.
Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) is directing the R-rated action comedy, which is scheduled to start shooting next month to accommodate Renner’s break between Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol and The Avengers. Adam McKay and Will Ferrell are producing.

While we might have lost Daniel Day-Lewis to a full-fledged "Abraham Lincoln" biopic, we still have high hopes that a worthy actor will tackle the title role in "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" -- and now we're one step closer to finding out who that is.
The Timur Bekmambetov-directed adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel has been testing a variety of known and unknown actors for the part, according to Deadline. Unfortunately, none of them is Eric Bana, who had been rumored for the part.
Adrien Brody is probably the most surprising name on the list, but we're suspecting he's looking for a true blockbuster after "Splice" and "Predators" failed to attract a wide audience despite decent reviews. Josh Lucas is also one of the better-known actors in the running.
But little-known actors James D'Arcy ("An American Haunting"), Benjamin Walker ("Flags of Our Fathers"_ and Oliver Jackson-Cohen ("Faster") are also on the short list.

Jack the Giant Killer is a British fairy tale about a young brave Celtic who eliminates a number of giants during King Arthur’s reign.
In 1961, United Artists released a middle budget film produced by Edward Small and directed by Nathan H. Juran called Jack the Giant Killer. The film performed quite well at the box office.
Bryan Singer shoots a modern day fairy tale in which the ancient peace between men and giants is in danger, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants’ kingdom in hope of rescuing a kidnapped princess. Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
Burlesque – Christina Aguilera, Cher
Faster – Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace
Love and Other Drugs – Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway
Tangled – Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Ron Perlman
Movie of the Week
Faster
The Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace
The Plot: An ex-con (Johnson) sets out to avenge his brother’s death.
The Buzz: Dwayne Johnson is back in straight-up action mode — after The Tooth Fairy and The Race to Witch Mountain — I was wondering if he’d ever return. Yes, Faster is certainly an action film, but it appears to be more than that; it appears to be a wildly rampaging, no-holds-barred, glorious tale of bullet-sweet vengeance. Well, that’s my gut-shot feeling anyway. Billy Bob Thornton is poised to play the perfect foil as the “slow justice” cop that stands in Johnson’s vengeful way. There are a couple solid female actresses here as well,...

This week marks the release of Disney’s Tangled, a fresh, critically-acclaimed adaptation of the age-old Rapunzel story and the 50th animated feature produced by Disney Animation. But the celebration is bittersweet, accompanied by the news that the studio is moving on from its magical, musical roots.
The La Times ran a piece over the weekend, titled “Disney Animation is closing the book on fairy tales,” lamenting the end of an era and laden with somber quotes about the waning performance of Disney princesses. The outlet focuses on the studio’s decision to rework the movie to a more gender-neutral story after the “poorly performing” release The Princess and the Frog (it made $267M worldwide). Thus, with one perceived disappointment and another hoping to find an audience mere days after Harry Potter’s arrival, the book of fairy tales is closed?

The Expendables
Directed by: Sylvester Stallone
Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews
Running Time: 1 hr 42 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: August 13, 2010
Plot: A group of contract killers led by Barney (Stallone) go to the island of Vilena to stop an evil dictator and his former CIA partner.
Who’S It For? Testicular fortitude comes to mind when thinking of the appropriate audience. If you’ve sat through a late-night cable action movie starring any one of these guys, then you’re probably willing and able to watch The Expendables.
Expectations: Wesley Snipes, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal weren’t able to join for various reasons, but everyone else is here. I wanted a smash’em up, crash’em up, jolly good time. After all, isn’t that the point of this film?

The Sisters Grimm tells the story of almost 12-year-old Sabrina and her 7-year-old sister Daphne. Ever since their parents went missing, the girls have been bounced around the foster care system. At the beginning of the book, they are being taken to stay with a woman claiming to be their grandmother. The only problem is that Grandma Grimm died before either girl was born. Or at least that was what their parents said ...
In actuality, Sabrina and Daphne's parents lied to protect them. The Grimms, related to the brothers Grimm of fairy-tale fame, are charged with keeping order in the town of Ferryport Landing. Fairy-tale creatures, or "Everafters" as they prefer to call themselves, came to America to escape opression. Soon, humans began to converge and the everafters lashed out, fearing the same oppression. Wilhelm Grimm had a witch cast a spell keeping all the everafters in Ferryport Landing as...

With the ensemble superhero feature The Avengers on the somewhat distant horizon, it looks like the comic book adaptation may have already started a new trend with teams of familiar characters joining forces for a feature film. We've already heard about one upcoming project - DreamWorks' adaptation of The Guardians, a story that has an assembly of imaginary icons like Jack Frost and the Easter Bunny protecting kids from the forces of evil. Now Heat Vision reports another similar project is being put together in Legends, which pits together characters like Red Riding Hood, Jack the Giant Killer and Hansel & Gretel in a dark fantasy. Having already been sold on the concept of The Guardians, I have to say this Legends project sounds just as intriguing and has plenty of potential to be something truly original and enjoyable, despite its combination of classic characters. The story, based on Nick Percival's...

Red Riding as a scythe wielding crimson warrior woman. Pinnocchio as a Frankenstein beast-like monster. Cinderella as an enticing biker babe with stringy hair. Hansel and Gretel as a pair of psychic warriors. These are not your Middle Age fairy tale characters.
What Nick Percival has done is reimagined Red Riding Hood, Jack the Giant Killer, the Big Bad Wolf and other storybook fantasy heroes and heroines into darker steampunk-meets-Seven anti-heroes. Legends: The Enchanted has magic, monsters and motorcycles in it, making it stand out from most of the other comic books out there. Comics publisher Radical are set to release Legends: The Enchanted this month – a brand new take on the fairytale legends of old, from Nick Percival. But they’re not stopping there…
Radical have teamed up with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment to look at bringing Legends: The Enchanted to the big-screen. There’s no writer or studio at this point but the plot, according to THR starts when:

Ok, here's a great idea. We're going to take The Brothers Grimm and mash it up with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. You know, have 'dark fantasy' versions of Red Riding Hood, Jack the Giant Killer and Hansel and Gretel teaming up to solve a murder mystery. Who says there is no longer any reverence for the true good stories? Legends: The Enchanted sounds like an expansion pack for Magic: The Gathering, but it is also a graphic novel by Nick Percival and now, possibly, a film from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment. Imagine is starting development on a film based on the graphic novel. There's no writer or studio at this point. THR explains that the story kicks into gear when " the remains of Pinocchio are discovered. Red Hood, now a noted wolf hunter, and Jack partner to discover who is murdering the creatures of folklore.

Coming to us straight from Heat Vision is news that Ron Howard and Brian Grazer are teaming up to to develop the graphic novel Legends for the big screen. The graphic novel is set in a dark fantasy world and brings together characters in an Avengers-like style. Now for the best part: the characters are from classic fairytales – Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Jack the Giant Killer and more will make appearances.
Howard and Grazer are producing for Imagine Entertainment while Barry Levine will produce for Radical Pictures.
According to Wikipedia the summary is as follows:
Legends is set in a fictional world settled by creatures know as the Enchanted. The world of the Enchanted has much violence spurned on by different technologies, nature and dark magic. The characters in the Enchanted world come from traditional folklore and literature, and include Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, and Red Hood.

The crew at Radical Comics have enjoyed a steady stream of Hollywood options since they opened their doors in 2007. Caliber, The Last Days of American Crime, Abattoir, Oblivion, Freedom Formula, and Hercules: The Thracian Wars have all been put in active development, often before the books themselves are released. (Those lush covers are undoubtedly a big help. You just want to pick them up and make a movie out of them.) THR's Heat Vision reports that Radical's latest sell is Nick Percival's new graphic novel, Legends, which has caught the eye of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.

News has reached us from Heat Vision that Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment and Radical Pictures are getting together to develop the graphic novel Legends for the big screen.

If a 3-D "adult" take on Jack and the Beanstalk rewritten by the guy who brought you Race to Witch Mountain wasn't filling you with cinematic excitement, take some comfort in the news that director Brian Singer is bringing along an old friend to take over the job; The Heat Vision Blog reports that Christopher McQuarrie has come aboard to rewrite Jack and the Giant Killer.
Jack will mark the fourth team-up for McQuarrie and Singer, having previously worked together on Public Access, The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie. Interestingly enough, Jack the Giant Killer is what is contractually preventing Singer from returning to the X-Men franchise as a director (though he will produce) while McQuarrie recently turned in a draft for the X-Men Origins: Wolverine sequel (Is that X-Men Origins 2: Also Wolverine or just Wolverine 2?)

Academy Award winning writer Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects") will reunite with director Bryan Singer ("Superman Returns") on "Jack The Giant Killer" for New Line and Legendary Pictures.
The fantasy adventure, set to lense in the UK this summer, will reportedly take an 'adult' look at the "Jack and the Beanstalk" legend, revolving around a captured princess and a long-standing peace between men and giants that becomes threatened.
The original "Jack the Giant Killer" feature released in 1962 by United Artists, directed by Nathan H. Juran, produced by Edward Small, starred actor Kerwin Mathews in a fairy tale story about a man who defends a princess against a sorcerer's giants and demons, loosely based on the traditional "Jack the Giant Killer" tale.

Someone either really, really loves X-Men or really, really loves orphans, because over at CharityBuzz someone coughed up enough dough (which will be donated to the Worldwide Orphans Foundation) to win a walk-on part in X-Men: First Class. This honor's estimated retail value is $25 large, although the site doesn't say what the winning bid was.
As Elisabeth Rappe reported, Brian Singer will not be directing X-Men: First Class but will be producing, alongside Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. Fox wants to get a move on the prequel, but Singer will have his hands full with Jack the Giant Killer for Warner Bros. John Gholson speculated on some possible directors who could take over the X-Men ship, including the current B.O. titan Louis Leterrier. Of course, then the question would be whether or not your walk-on that you just paid a lot of money for would end up in blurry post-production 3D or not,...
