This SXSW round-up is a bit like our living (and growing) scrapbook from this year’s big event. We’ll continue to update the article as more video interviews and entries become available.
The SXSW festival has changed and changed again in its 35-plus years. Originally begun as “just” a music festival, the event has become an intersection that’s ever expanding. Bringing in the best of film, television, gaming, and even the cutting edge of technology, it is sometimes hard to quantify what isn’t SXSW these days. Even the Film Festival is now the Film & TV Festival. Still, Den of Geek tried to cover it all, so here’s a look at all the exciting projects we got an early glimpse at in our studio.

“I wanted to experiment: can I develop a family which was not unlike my own upbringing?” says Nicolas Cage, while talking to Den of Geek about his new movie Arcadian, which premiered at SXSW 2024. “My dad did most of the heavy lifting, he did the raising because my mom sadly couldn’t be around. So it was just my father, and in this case, myself and my older brother. I saw that family dynamic in the [Elia] Kazan picture, East of Eden.”
From that description, you might imagine Arcadian to be an austere drama, something that takes place in a rustic farm house and focuses on the complex relationship between a father struggling to do right by his two boys. And you’d mostly be right… mostly.
But then Cage completes his thought. “And then I thought, well, wouldn’t it be interesting if this little family nucleus was contending with...

Jennifer Lawrence said winning the Best Actress Academy Award in 2013 for portraying a troubled young widow, Tiffany Maxwell in the comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook didn’t make her happy for long.
Jennifer Lawrence as Tiffany Maxwell in a still from Silver Linings Playbook
With this award, she became the second-youngest winner in the category at just the age of 22. But for Lawrence, it was more like a quick burst of joy followed by the usual chaos of life.
As she strutted towards the stage to grab her trophy and say her thanks, she pulled off an epic stair-fumble in front of the A-list crowd and those watching on TV. J.Law has confessed that she was sensitive about the incident for a long time.

Set in the 1920s, Has Anybody Seen My Gal? gets its name from the once-popular jazz song recorded by the California Ramblers in 1925. Loosely based upon the Eleanor Porter novel Oh Money! Money! (she was also the author behind Pollyanna), the 1952 jukebox musical comedy was given the full Technicolor treatment – a visual bee’s knees in Kino Lorber’s sterling release.
The Universal Pictures title makes good use of Twenties tunes such as ‘Tiger Rag,’ ‘When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin’ Along,’ ‘It Ain’t Gonna Rain No More,’ ‘Gimme a Little Kiss, Will Ya, Huh?’ - and of course, ‘Has Anybody Seen My Gal?’. It was directed by studio regular Douglas Sirk, who would go on to make his name with lush, slyly ironic melodramas such as Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows, Written on the Wind (all with Rock Hudson), There's Always Tomorrow,...

Albert Einstein had his theory of relativity, and Breaking Baz has his theory of party lift-off.
Friday night at the Universal filmed entertainment soiree, the moment of fusion came when Snoop Dogg hit the room at the Sunset Tower and was immediately embraced by Oppenheimer stars Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh.
No wait. Surely, it was when Blunt took Robert Downey Jr. in her arms and a giddy little waltz ensued.
Maybe the right molecular vibe kicked in when Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan arrived with Emma Thomas, its producer, and they fell into a lively conversation with Cillian Murphy and Downey Jr.
Perhaps it was when Colman Domingo sauntered in, resplendent in red. He stars in Netflix movie Rustin and WB’s The Color Purple, neither of them linked to Universal. Didn’t matter a jot. The warmth of the welcome for him was palpable. “I’m happy to be here,...

The departure comes as Anonymous Content has been searching for nearly a year for a new CEO following the surprising resignation of Dawn Olmstead and COO Heather McCauley from the company. Sources close to the company told Deadline that it is in the final stages of the search.
The duo resigned in March. Olmstead resurfaced in December, teaming up with Charlize Theron and her Denver & Delilah partners Beth Kono and Aj Dix to launch a new venture.

Since the second Academy Awards ceremony in 1930, 73 people have received acting Oscar nominations for their debut film performances, yielding a total of 15 breakout wins. Conversely, the list of actors who have earned recognition for their final movie appearances is much smaller, featuring only 18 general and two successful examples. Those who belong to this club gained entry in a variety of ways, with some having voluntarily quit acting altogether, others having specifically stepped away from film performing, and a few having sadly not lived long enough to bask in the glory of their farewell nominations.
Since film acting retirement can never be absolutely permanent while a performer is still alive, only deceased individuals can correctly be counted as official members of this group. Although most currently living retired actors did not pick up Oscar nominations for their latest films anyway, the academy did smile upon one – Daniel Day-Lewis – on his declared way out.

Roger Kastel, the artist behind the famed “Jaws” poster of a leviathan lurking underneath a swimmer, has died at the age of 92 from heart and kidney failure.
The unforgettable image was originally used as the cover for the paperback version of the Peter Benchley novel that the movie was based on; it was later appropriated by the movie’s promotional and marketing campaign.
The original hardcover artwork featured a much smoother, less menacing-looking shark. Kastel gave it some teeth.

Roger Karl Kastel, the illustrator behind some of the most memorable movie poster images of all time, has died. He passed away November 8, at age 92 in Worcester County, Ma, according to the post on his official web site.
Kastel’s best-known work included imagery central to the posters for Jaws and The Empire Strikes Back. He also illustrated vivid book covers for the likes of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, Jackie Collins’ Hollywood Wives and W.G Wells’ The Invisible Man.
His Jaws illustration was originally created for Peter Benchley’s novel on which the film was based. Describing the process of its creation, Kastel remembered, “I did a very rough sketch, and [the publisher] said, ‘That’s great, just make the shark realistic and bigger. Make him very much bigger!'”
It worked. Benchley’s book was a bestseller and Universal execs, knowing a good thing when they saw it,...

Roger Kastel, the artist whose painting of a shark and a swimmer for the cover of the paperback version of Peter Benchley’s Jaws was used as the iconic movie poster for the 1975 Steven Spielberg classic, has died. He was 92.

Upon its August 2023 premiere, the Amazon Prime Video original film “Red, White & Royal Blue” quickly gained a massive audience, a large portion of which reportedly created new subscriptions just so they could view it. Now, the two-hour adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel of the same name is set to embark on a 2024 TV awards run that, of course, won’t include the delayed 75th Emmys but could more than reasonably begin with the 81st Golden Globes. If it does make its way into the upcoming Best Limited Series/TV Movie lineup, it will be the first one-off film in seven years to earn Golden Globes recognition as a general program.
Directed and co-written by Tony winner Matthew López (“The Inheritance”), “Red, White & Royal Blue” stars Taylor Zakhar Perez (“The Kissing Booth” franchise) and Nicholas Galitzine (2021’s “Cinderella”) as two fictional world leaders’ offspring whose bitter rivalry unexpectedly evolves into a romance.

Years after his death in 2003, two-time Oscar-winning director Elia Kazan remains both an influential and controversial figure, respected and reviled in equal measure. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Kazan started his career as a stage actor, soon transitioning into directing. He mounted several landmark productions, including the original run of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Throughout his career he received three Tony awards for Best Director of a Play: “All My Sons” in 1947, “Death of a Salesman” in 1949, and “J.B.” in 1959.
He transitioned into filmmaking with “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” (1945). Two years later, he won his first Oscar for Best Director for “Gentleman’s Agreement” (1947), which also took home Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Celeste Holm). A taboo-shattering drama about antisemitism, the film established Kazan as a director drawn towards contemporary, hot-button topics.

In Greta Gerwig's blockbuster "Barbie," the title character (Margot Robbie) finds that she is experiencing phenomena that no Barbie has ever experienced before. While dancing with her friends, she has idle thoughts of her own mortality. The next morning, her fake food is spoiled and her fake shower is cold. Most notably, her feet -- ordinarily sculpted into a high-heels-ready point -- now walk flat on the ground. There is only one Barbie in Barbieland that might know what is happening: Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon), an outcast who lives on the edge of town.
It becomes clear that all the Barbies in Barbieland are, in fact, the Platonic ideals of the dolls being played with by little girls back in the real world. Weird Barbie, with her bizarre facial tattoos and wildly trimmed hair, is clearly the Barbie that has been played with too roughly. A little girl has...

Goodbye HBO Max, hello Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced several weeks back that the company was dropping the "HBO" from the name of its flagship streaming service, and that day has come. What does that mean for you, the subscriber? For one, it means a lot more movies and TV shows will be streaming in 4K, and the list of initial titles is pretty impressive. There are, however, a few caveats.
Those who wish to watch movies like "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Argo" in Ultra HD will need to be subscribed to the new tier offered by Max called "Ultimate Ad-Free." This goes for $19.99 per month and includes access to the service's library of 4K movies and TV shows. There is also a plan with ads for $9.99 per month and a regular ad-free plan for $15.99 per month. Sudheer Sirivara, Global Technology Platform for Warner Bros. Discovery, had this to...

Florence Pugh didn’t need superpowers to realize she was being judged for joining the MCU.
The Oscar-nominated actress, who earned breakout roles in independent films like “Lady Macbeth” and “Midsommar,” recalled the reaction to her starring in Marvel’s 2021 “Black Widow” alongside Scarlett Johansson and David Harbour. Pugh went on to appear in the Disney+ Marvel series “Hawkeye” and will lead the upcoming MCU film “Thunderbolts.”
“So many people in the indie film world were really pissed off at me. They were like, ‘Great, now she’s gone forever,'” Pugh told Time magazine. “And I’m like, no, I’m working as hard as I used to work. I’ve always done back-to-back movies. It’s just people are watching them now. You just have to be a bit more organized with your schedule.”

Items signed by James Dean, including the 1954 studio contract that made him a star, go up for auction on May 25, Nate D. Sanders Auctions announced on Tuesday. The document, which secured Dean his brief, era-defining acting career, is appropriately described as “one of the most important acting contracts in the history of Hollywood.”
The Warner Bros. contract, dated April 7, 1954, was for Dean’s first film, Elia Kazan’s “East of Eden.” It gave the studio the option to extend Dean’s contract for several more films. Sadly, his tragic death at age 24 meant he only made two more features, 1955’s “Rebel Without a Cause” and 1956’s “Giant,” which permanently cemented his status as a movie icon on par with Marilyn Monroe.

Opening night of the 14th TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood brought out not only the lustrous 4D restored Howard Hawks classic western “Rio Bravo” — starring John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Angie Dickinson, 91, who was on hand — but two directors and board members of Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation, Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson. They extolled Scorsese’s foresight and ongoing commitment to preserving and saving the original celluloid elements of classic films so that restorations like this one can occur.
“David and Warner Bros have their own archivists and they have titles they’d like from the Warner Bros. archive to be preserved,” said Spielberg explaining how titles are chosen, nearly 1000 since 1990 to date. “And every studio does have that but we try to find the films, not the films that are our favorite movies, but films that tell a very unique story of this country and the people of this country,...

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and President David Zaslav, just a day after revealing details of the new combined streaming service Max, joined industry titans Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson to tout another area close to the heart of the studio he now heads: the importance of restoring and preserving Warner Bros.’ rich legacy of film classics, especially as it heads into its 100th anniversary year. Appearing on stage at the opening night of the 14th TCM Classic Film Festival with Spielberg and Anderson in a conversation moderated by TCM host Ben Mankiewicz, Zaslav — who previously stated his belief in the theatrical experience and a return to that after 2021’s much-derided day-and-date release model under past CEO Jason Kilar — made it clear that the studio’s commitment to the preservation and well-being of the studio’s rich library will be a priority in his administration. Warner Bros. has already celebrated its centennial with a segment during the Academy Awards, the publication of a studio-supported book (Warner Bros.: 100 Years of Storytelling) and, most recently, a barrage of festivities emanating from Turner Classic Movies. TCM’s programming for all of April is being devoted to Warners films, and at the 14th annual TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood, running April 13-16, many studio masterpieces, some recently restored and remastered, will be shown on big screens around town. Here are 10 that this THR Hollywood history buff highly recommends.

One of the most time-consuming aspects of being a cinephile is worrying about the health and longevity of TCM. The venerable broadcast television channel dedicated to classic Hollywood cinema has grown since its 1994 launch into a kind of preservationist and enthusiast's empire that includes an annual film festival, an original film distribution arm, a releasing imprint, and a slew of diverse programming initiatives (not to mention a wine club). TCM certainly seems to be in better health than most entities dedicated segments of the film ecosystem that are -- by virtue of not being focused on the biggest, brightest, latest thing -- not exactly profit drivers. It has survived both a massive merger between AT&T and its parent company, Time Warner, and a subsequent divestment of AT&T and acquisition by Discovery in all but five years, after all.

Hollywood was in the midst of its Brat Pack fervor when the director/screenwriter team of Tim Hunter and Neil Jimenez jolted moviegoers with "River's Edge." It was the grimy, dead-souled antithesis to John Hughes' peppy tales of suburban woe. The Northern California high schoolers in Hunter's film are dead-enders who, aware of their paltry worth to society, have little value for human life. When their friend John (Daniel Roebuck) claims he's murdered his girlfriend Jamie (Danyi Deats) and takes them to see her nude corpse, which he's discarded like a dog toy next to a riverbank, they do not recoil in horror. They are at most dumbstruck, and at worst eager to aid John in covering up the crime.
We should be shocked by their lack of revulsion, but Hunter lets us hang out with these kids for a good 15 minutes before taking us to Jamie. They're future burnouts...

Every March feels like Christmas for classic film fans as television’s home for timeless movie fare, TCM, finds a fresh way to package its massive slate of Oscar-worthy films in the annual 31 Days of Oscar marathon. How should it be organized? By decade? By award category? A to Z? For this mega-marathon’s 29th round, the 352 titles airing — all of them either a winner or nominee across Academy categories — are bundled under one of 55 genres. The viewing joys begin on Wednesday, March 1 at daybreak with the category of “Family Ties,” led by Orson Welles’ masterful 1942 period piece about wealthy Midwesterners The Magnificent Ambersons. Six more kinfolk classics run throughout the day: James Dean and Richard Davalos in 1955’s sibling rivalry drama East of Eden at 9:30am/8:30c and Judy Garland’s frothy 1944 musical Meet Me in St. Louis at 11:30am/10:30c make for quite a double feature!

The relationship between fathers and sons is complicated. It can be tough, tender, loving, combative, disappointing, violent, the stuff of Shakespearean and even Greek tragedy. It’s little wonder there have been countless films exploring fathers and sons including “East of Eden,” “Finding Nemo,” “Back to the Future,” “Field of Dreams,” “Nebraska,” “Fences,” “Beginners” and “Kramer vs. Kramer.”
One of the most indelible is Martin Ritt’s “Hud,” which celebrates its 60th anniversary. And time hasn’t diminished the power of this unapologetic drama starring Paul Newman, Melvyn Douglas, Patricia Neal and Brandon De Wilde.
Newman had played characters of questionable morality such as his Oscar-nominated turn “Fast” Eddie Felsen in 1961’s “The Hustler,” but he had never played anyone quite like Hud, the ultimate heel who never met a bottle of booze he wouldn’t drink or a married woman he didn’t seduce. Actors doing the absolute most in commitment to their character have a long history in the film industry. To achieve his coyote-esque look in Dan Gilroy's 2014 neo-noir "Nightcrawler," Jake Gyllenhaal dropped 30 pounds, while Christian Bale's extreme weight loss to play a boxer dealing with drug addiction in 2010's "The Fighter" earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his troubles. A comedic scene in Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" wasn't working until Jonah Hill took a real sock in the jaw from co-star Jon Bernthal. But men aren't the only ones unafraid of getting physical for their roles; for John Sturges' western classic "Gunfight at the O.K. Walak and Tager are expected to continue producing projects for AC Studios through an arrangement whose terms are still being worked out.
There are no details yet about the duo’s replacement though I hear UCP veteran Garrett Kemble, who joined Anonymous Content as EVP of Development for AC Studios last summer, reuniting with former UCP President Dawn Olmstead who is now CEO of Anonymous Content, is poised for a bigger role in light of Walak and Tager’s pending exit.

Florence Pugh has found her next film project, and it will see the “Don’t Worry Darling” star collaborating with yet another actor-turned-director. Pugh has signed on to star in “The Pack,” a new psychological thriller that Alexander Skarsgård is set to direct, IndieWire confirmed.
The original film, which is written by Rose Gilroy, follows a group of documentarians who brave the remote wilderness of Alaska in an effort to save a nearly extinct species of wolves. When the crew is brought back together at a prestigious awards ceremony, tensions flare as a deadly truth threatens to unravel their work. The team lived through the harsh elements of the wild but will a secret they share survive the night?

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” brought Nicolas Cage back into the spotlight this spring, highlighting his eclectic filmography, willingness to commit to any role he takes on, and undeniable passion for cinema. One of the more memorable running gags in the meta buddy comedy was Javi (Pedro Pascal) introducing the fictional version of Cage to “Paddington 2.” Cage is originally confused about why his new cinephile friend has such an affection for Paul King’s children’s film, but he eventually agrees to watch it and finds himself moved to tears.
As it turns out, art imitates life. Though many of Cage’s traits in the film (like his alcoholism and the fact that he has a daughter instead of sons) were made up, the actor really does love “Paddington 2.”
“I think the movie is terrific,” Cage said in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I particularly...

No more enjoyable conversation grudge match can be had than pitting James Dean against Marlon Brando in a Hollywood Heartthrob showdown. Which do prefer? The rough, raw honesty of Brando in László Benedek's "The Wild One," wherein he plays a humming, human motorcycle engine, tanked up on erotic, rebellious energy and living to subvert paradigms and dismiss 1950s squareness? Or the brooding, poetic angst of Dean in Nicholas Ray's "Rebel Without a Cause," a sensitive, mature soul -- even a little kooky -- who may sometimes let pride get the better of him, but who would be content to form his own blissful, star-gazing queer polycule with a pair of classmates.
Each of the actors was also sexually open at a time when queerness was notoriously repressed and pilloried; remember when Rock Hudson and Liberace were "ladies men"? Commonly attributed to Dean is the quote "No, I'm not homosexual.
