This marks another intriguing collaboration between the Gyllenhaal siblings. Setting the Scene Bride of Frankenstein, originally directed by James Whale, is a classic horror film from Universal’s golden age of monster movies. Known for its thematic depth and pioneering special effects, it continues to resonate with audiences today. As horror movies often weave modern folktales, this story’s themes of creativity, monstrosity, beauty, and masculinity are relevant across eras. Update: Daniel Richtman has learned that there’s not only a Mummy prequel in the works at Universal, but there are two other Mummy projects in the works as well. He writes, “There are no less than Three Mummy projects in development at Universal, one is a direct sequel to the Fraser films.” So fans might get to see Brendan Fraser make his long-awaited return to the role of Rick O’Connell after all!
The original article follows:
The 2017 version of The Mummy was supposed to kick off a new cinematic universe at Universal Pictures – a Dark Universe that would consist of interconnected reboots of their classic monster properties. Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Creature from the Black Lagoon, they were all coming back, and they were all going to be crossing paths with each other. Nobody was expecting it, but it’s true: two-time Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal – who earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance in the 2010 film Crazy Heart and a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for writing her 2021 feature directorial debut The Lost Daughter – is writing and directing a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). The Bride! is currently making its way through production and unveiling images that are intriguing, even if there are jarring elements to them. So we thought this was a good time to put together a list of Everything We Know About The Bride!
Studio And Release Date
The Bride! is not set up at Universal Pictures, so this isn’t an official remake of The Bride of Frankenstein, it’s a play on the same concepts found in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein that inspired the 1935 film.

Monsters are everywhere! Godzilla and Kong are going at it once again (this time as a double act) and now Abigail has hit screens, a movie about a heist gone wrong where the loot is an adorable 12-year-old ballerina. Starring Dan Stevens, Melissa Barrera and Kathryn Newton and directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett aka Radio Silence, who made the raucous Ready Or Not (as well as the most recent Scream movies), it’s a gore-soaked genre love letter that at one point had ties to the Universal Monsters canon.
Without Abigail spoilers, that’s not entirely evident in the finished product, which is nonetheless an absolute blast but it feels like a good time to celebrate the rich history of these creature features. After all, they aren’t going away anytime soon. From Leigh Whannell’s excellent take on The Invisible Man in 2020 to Zelda Williams and Diablo Cody’s Liza Frankenstein,...

George Waggner's 1941 horror film "The Wolf Man" introduced audiences to, essentially, the "second officer" of the Universal Monsters canon. Everyone knows that Dracula is the captain of the monster ship, and that Frankenstein is his first officer (a position he often shares with the Bride). The Wolf Man is always third in command, perhaps serving as a security officer or an enforcer. Mummies, gillmen, invisible men, Dr. Hydes, and other ancillary ghouls serve lower down in the crew.
Watching the original "Wolf Man" film, however, reveals a dark and sad tale about Larry Talbot who is attacked by a wolf on a misty night in Wales, afflicting him with the curse of the werewolf. Throughout the year, Larry will transform into an animalistic wolf/human creature and stalk and kill random victims. The tale is terrifying and tragic and inspired many pop culture tales to follow -- as well as many nightmares.

Maggie Gyllenhaal has offered the first look at The Bride!, revealing Christian Bale in character as Frankenstein’s monster and Jessie Buckley as the eponymous bride.
Gyllenhaal’s take on the Bride of Frankenstein also stars Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, and Annette Bening. The plot sees “a lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.”
The Bride!, which marks Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort, is scheduled to open in theaters on October 3rd, 2025.
Incidentally, it’s not the only Frankenstein movie in the works, as Guillermo del Toro is making his own version starring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth.

Our first official look at one of the most anticipated horror movies currently in the works, a new spin on Frankenstein's monster titled "The Bride!", has finally arrived ... and it's nothing like what we were expecting.
Actor/director Maggie Gyllenhaal has long been rumored to be taking a stab at the classic Universal monster(s) and, after the widespread acclaim of 2021's "The Lost Daughter", we most recently had word that the filmmaker had assembled quite an A-list cast of talent for the production. In addition to Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard in various supporting roles, none other than Christian Bale will star as Frankenstein's monster while Buckley reunites with her "The Lost Daughter" director to portray the eponymous Bride. This morning, we got our first look at Bale and Buckley as the monstrous duo and, well, believe us when we say you'll probably need to see it to believe it.

The highly-anticipated sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman has been pushed back from its original Oct. 3, 2025 release date on the Warner Bros. slate. The movie will now release Oct. 2, 2026. That means there will now be an over four-year gap between the first film, which saw Robert Pattinson don the cape and cowl, and Part II.
This will of course come as disappointing news for DC fans who have been awaiting the second installment in what’s meant to be a whole trilogy of Batman movies from Reeves and Pattinson. But it isn’t all bad news for Batfans, especially if (weirdly) you also happen to be a fan of The Dark Knight. Taking over the Oct. 3, 2025 spot on the slate is another WB production, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, which is a reimagining of the Bride of Frankenstein, starring Bale, Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, and Penelope Cruz. A new take on the classic tale of The Bride of Frankenstein is headed our way from director Maggie Gyllenhaal, her upcoming genre movie simply titled The Bride!.
The Bride! will release in theaters on October 3, 2025.
We recently learned that The Bride! will star Penelope Cruz as the titular Bride, with Christian Bale as Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard as a detective.
Jessie Buckley (Men, I’m Thinking of Ending Things) also stars.
In the original 1935 film from director James Whale, “After recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life. Meanwhile, the Monster (Boris Karloff) remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.

Warner Bros has pushed Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II starring Robert Pattinson back a year from October 3, 2025, to October 2, 2026, and set Paul Thomas Anderson’s crime tale starring Leonard DiCaprio for August 8, 2025.
It is understood the date change for The Batman Part II stems from the Hollywood strikes, which halted and severely disrupted studio production for close to six months last year.
The sequel to Reeves’ 2022 $772.2m global hit steers clear of DC Studios co-head James Gunn’s Superman on July 11, 2025, which will be the first film on release from the restructured division.

The term “scream queen” gets thrown around a lot, even applied to actors who have only done a handful of horror films. But if any young performer deserves the title, it’s Samara Weaving. Not only does she star in the very gruesome post-apocalyptic horror-action movie Azrael, directed by E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and written by Simon Barrett (The Guest), which just premiered at SXSW 2024, but she’s been in The Babysitter, Scream VI, and Ready or Not, among others. In fact, when we ask Weaving at the festival whether she likes being referred to as a “scream queen,” she answers quickly, “Yeah, why not? ‘Scream Queen’ is great. I’ll take it!”
For Weaving, the appeal of horror movies goes beyond the guts and gore most often associated with the genre. “It’s such a good vehicle to explore so many things,” she tells Den of Geek. “For [Azrael], it...

Stephen King is, as his name suggests, the king of horror fiction (while occasionally delving into other genres). The combination of his vivid writing style, characters with unique personalities and special abilities, and epic stories that unfurl with riveting suspense make his work rife for cinematic interpretation. Within these spine-chilling stories, King infuses keen observations on the human condition, and how evil — both supernatural and real — manifests in our society. Stephen King's literary works have produced some of the greatest films of all time including Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," Brian De Palma's "Carrie," and Rob Reiner's "Stand By Me." Over 70 of his novels and short stories have been adapted into films or television shows, but since he is such a prolific writer — often churning out several books each year — there are countless that have yet to be adapted. This list ranks seven of Stephen King's engrossing page-turners...

When it comes to pushing the limits physically and mentally for a role, it is difficult to look past Christian Bale. The British actor is not just known for his memorable performances on screen, but also for his extreme modes of preparation that he adopts to get into the skin of his characters. From resorting to brutal diets for his roles in American Psycho and The Fighter to sacrificing sleep to play an insomniac in The Machinist, Bale has done it all for the love of his craft.

More recently, the Oscar winner was seen in Thor: Love and Thunder in another transformative role as Gorr the God Butcher. With his penchant for taking on complex parts, Bale is looking to push the envelope once again in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride for which he will go through some tangible changes to reportedly play the iconic Frankenstein.

Valentine’s Day may be a day of love, but there’s something about fear and murder that really gets the heart racing. Forget the countless Christmas rom-coms or Technicolor musical romances out there; sometimes, the most swoon-worthy romance is one between a human and a literal monster.
On the surface, horror and romance are two genres that shouldn’t mix well together; one exposes the worst and most disturbing cruelty humanity has to offer, while the other is meant to show the most tender and beautiful feelings we have. But as long as horror has been a genre, it’s been mixed with romance to frequently stellar results. Some of the earliest horror monsters, like vampires, are inherently sexual beings: their powers clear metaphors for intercourse and their ability to allure and entice humans with their beauty a key part of what makes them dangerous. Sex and romance isn’t always the same thing,...

The first thing I wanted to do after watching The Last Repair Shop was give a hug to Dana Atkinsons, Duane Michaels, Paty Moreno, and Steve Bagmanyan. It would not be an exaggeration if I compared the documentary itself to a warm hug, or even a warm cup of coffee on a winter morning, and so on. Deservingly getting nominated in the “Best Documentary Short” category at the upcoming Oscars, The Last Repair Shop hits all the right notes when it comes to wholesomeness. The forty minutes of it pass like a breeze, and in the end, you crave more.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In The Documentary?
In the heart of Los Angeles, there’s a musical instrument repair shop, just like tons of other similar shops all over the world. But this one is very special because this shop not only infuses new life into dead instruments, but they...

Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein remains as influential as ever, with numerous notable adaptations and horror movies inspired by the literary classic released in the last year alone. With news of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Bride of Frankenstein-inspired feature on the horizon, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.
The story of a mad scientist creating a monster stitched together from various body parts has contributed to one of horror’s most enduring monsters, bringing with it over two centuries of stage plays, movies, and television adaptations influenced by the classic horror story.
This week’s streaming picks highlight some of the more unique horror movies inspired by Frankenstein. These five titles use the base story to explore new terrain, whether through comedy, gore, or explorations of contemporary themes.

It's official: Franken-fever has gripped the entertainment industry! Up first is one of /Film's most anticipated movies of 2024: "Lisa Frankenstein," director Zelda Williams and writer Diablo Cody's teen horror rom-com starring Kathryn Newton and Jughead Jones himself, "Riverdale" alum Cole Sprouse, as a reanimated corpse. Elsewhere, Guillermo del Toro is on the verge of finally realizing his long-unfulfilled dream of adapting Mary Shelley's gothic literary sci-fi horror masterpiece itself, "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus," having recently recruited the star of another popular chaotic young adult series, "Euphoria" actor Jacob Elordi, to portray his own Monster.
Last, but certainly not least, you might have heard rumblings throughout the past several months about actor-filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal developing a "Frankenstein" movie of her own. Deadline reports the project is now formally moving forward at Warner Bros., with production set to begin by the first quarter of 2024. Contrary to previous rumors,...

Earlier this week, a new listing indicated that director Maggie Gyllenhaal was gearing up to begin production on a Bride of Frankenstein feature tentatively titled The Bride. The currently untitled Frankenstein lore movie, now confirmed under Warner Bros., is not only now official, per Deadline, but Annette Bening has joined the cast.
Bening adds to a cast that includes star Jessie Buckley, Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, Peter Sarsgaard as a detective.
In the untitled Bride of Frankenstein film, “A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.”
This confirms a period-set feature that will center around Frankenstein’s quest for love.

Update: Deadline reveals that Annette Bening (The Kids Are Alright) is also in the cast. Their sources tell them Jessie Buckley is “the star”, so possibly the Bride instead of Penelope Cruz. They also provided a synopsis: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.

While Guillermo del Toro is hard at work on his new Frankenstein adaptation, director Maggie Gyllenhaal appears to be gearing up to begin production on The Bride, a Bride of Frankenstein update, according to the Production List.
The listing confirms previous reports that The Bride will star Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard as a detective.
It doesn’t include plot details, however, beyond “a horror thriller, about the Bride of Frankenstein.” So, it remains unclear whether The Bride will be a more faithful period horror remake or a give a contemporary spin on the classic horror movie.

“More original horror!” is always a curious statement to read from fellow horror fans. In the last few years, we’ve seen everything from a modern resurgence of new slashers, to subversive takes on the home invasion subgenre that once dominated the 2000s, to the slow, gradual return of fresh horror comedies. True, franchises may have a chokehold on the box office and wholly original concepts may be rare after a century of cinema, but contemporary horror always manages to reinvent itself by recycling classic storytelling frameworks and updating them with inventive twists, as horror is and will always be cyclical.

Like most movies, The Invisible Man travelled a long and winding road to the silver screen, and perhaps longer and more winding than most. As biographer James Curtis put it in his book James Whale: A New World of Gods and Monsters, “The gestation of The Invisible Man was the lengthiest and most convoluted of all of James Whale’s films. It involved four directors, nine writers, six treatments, and ten separate screenplays—all for a film that emerged very much in harmony with the book on which it was based.” It was first suggested as a possible follow-up to Dracula (1931), perhaps as a vehicle for new star Bela Lugosi, but was dropped in favor of Frankenstein (1931) due to the complicated special effects it would require. After Frankenstein was an even bigger success, both director James Whale and star Boris Karloff were immediately attached to The Invisible Man and several...

A classic film that not only endures but continues to inspire half a century later is a true marvel. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, The Wicker Man helped popularize the folk horror genre that continues to flourish with the likes of Midsommar, The Witch, and The Ritual. Its impact extends beyond cinema, from inspiring Radiohead (“Burn the Witch”) and Iron Maiden (“The Wicker Man”) songs to being included in the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
In the film, Sergeant Neil Howie travels from the mainland to the Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The devout Christian is appalled to learn that the islanders practice a form of paganism characterized by blasphemous beliefs, degeneracy, doublespeak, and peculiar customs. Like The Bride of Frankenstein, the namesake doesn’t show up until the final moments of the film, but it leaves an indelible impression long after the credits roll.

A couple months ago, it was announced that eight of the classic Universal Monsters movies – Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Phantom of the Opera, and Creature from the Black Lagoon – would be receiving a limited edition 4K box set release. That box set was supposed to reach store shelves today, October 3rd… but you may have noticed that it’s not available, and Amazon stopped taking orders. That’s because the release of the box set has been delayed until February of 2024.
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared the following message from Universal: “Due to an unexpected packaging issue, the originally planned October 3, 2023 release of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s upcoming 4K collectible box set of the “Universal Classic Monsters Limited Edition Collection” is moving to February 13, 2024. When the Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos last brought a film from the Venice Film Festival to the Telluride Film Festival, the Searchlight title, which counted Tony McNamara as a writer and Emma Stone as the biggest name in its cast, was greeted with rave reviews; went on to double-digits of Oscar nominations, including picture, directing and screenwriting mentions; and ultimately was awarded one statuette, best actress for its leading lady.
Could that exact history repeat itself five years after The Favourite? I think it’s very possible.
On Saturday night, a day after being unveiled on the Lido, Lanthimos’ latest work, Poor Things, had its North American premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, playing simultaneously at the Werner Herzog Cinema and the Galaxy Theatre. And while more than a few attendees found the film — which I will only describe as Frankenstein meets Barbie, and which Searchlight will release on Dec.

Back in the Dark Universe days, Universal was developing a remake of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here) that was set to be directed by Bill Condon – who seemed to be the perfect choice, since he had directed the film Gods and Monsters, about the final days of Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein director James Whale. But then the Dark Universe crumbled and those remake plans were scrapped. Now it looks like there’s another remake in the works, simply titled The Bride, with Maggie Gyllenhaal directing the project for the Netflix streaming service. According to Production Weekly, Gyllenhaal has even found her first two cast members: her The Dark Knight co-star Christian Bale and her husband Peter Sarsgaard!
Gyllenhaal’s take on The Bride is expected to start filming sometime in the first quarter of 2024.

Poor Elsa Lanchester and poor Bride of Frankenstein. Despite being the title character of James Whale’s 1935 horror-comedy masterpiece, this ghoulish undead creature only gets about five minutes of proper screen time. Whale’s camera certainly basks in her visage, which by design is far more glamorous than makeup artist Jack Pierce’s other creature feature designs for the Universal Monsters. Nonetheless, after finally being brought to life, the character, who is almost insultingly dubbed “the Monster’s Mate” in the credits, gets to walk once or twice around the lab and is then obliterated—burned to a cinder because she had the audacity to (like everyone else) be repulsed by Boris Karloff’s misunderstood monster.

The film collective known as Radio Silence has more than proved they know their way around a recognizable IP, having taken the reins on the "Scream" franchise following the passing of horror maestro Wes Craven. But now, the Radio Silence team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella are taking on the horror holy grail — a Universal Monster movie.

If Jane Austen were alive today, and if for some baffling reason she wrote film criticism instead of brilliant novels, she'd probably say it is a truth universally acknowledged that a film that makes a fortune must be in want of a sequel.
Sure enough, no matter how much the industry changes, the desire to capitalize on a hit film by making another one just like it, rubber-stamped for audience familiarity, must be overwhelming. The history of cinema is littered with sequels and for each one that audiences remember — for better or worse — there's at least one that's almost completely forgotten, even if they're the sequel to a film that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
Indeed, there are more forgotten Best Picture sequels than you might expect. George C. Scott reprised his Oscar-winning role as General George S. Patton 16 years later, in the TV movie "The Last Days of Patton.

The Brenaissance has culminated in Brendan Fraser’s Oscar nomination for his role in The Whale. Although his first nomination for acting, The Whale is now the fifth Fraser movie to have a presence at the Oscars. If you’re curious about the other four, Showbiz Cheat Sheet is here to help. Here is your guide to Brendan Fraser at the Oscars, and why it’s about time they recognize his acting work too.

The 1998 drama Gods and Monsters depicted filmmaker James Whale (Ian McKellan)’s relationship with a gardener (Fraser) at the end of his life. This is decades after Whale directed Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, as he ensnares the young man into sexual games.
Writer/director Bill Condon won the Oscar for his screenplay. McKellan and Lynne Redgrave got nominations.
