Thus begins an arduous trek across brutal terrain. Fighting off and killing a Crow war party, the Indian gains a horse and a rifle. Enduring winter's freeze and a bear attack, they survive. Their bond of respect and trust becomes love. Before it can be consummated, five white mountain men, led by Buford, appear, offering the Woman safe conduct. They let the Indian go. In a poignant parting, he gives her his amulet, a talisman, to protect her. But, that night, fired by liquor and lust, the trappers gamble for first to have her. When the elder Isaac tries to stop them, he is shot dead. The four take their turns ravaging the Woman. Concerned for her, the Indian rides back the next day to find the Woman left staked out, limbs apart, shocked out of her senses. Leaving the catatonic girl in the care of two old Shoshone squaws, the Indian tracks the men, one by one. His savage brand of vengeance: insidious devices of torture and slow death.

As the youngsters gape in frightened disbelief, the hoods summarily execute Sonny with a bullet to his head. One of the girls screams, and the mobsters, knowing they've been made, start after them. Joey blasts the instructor dead with his shotgun. Panicked, the youngsters flee into the woods. By nightfall, they regain their composure and plot a war to survive. The predators become the prey, no match in their silk suits and designer shoes against a vengeful band determined to wipe them out by primitive means.
- Jamie and three of his schoolmates - Lester, Judith and Roberto - are kidnapped after church by the nefarious Doyle gang, whom escaped from a wagon carrying them to prison. Doyle plans to use the teens as bargaining tools to ensure that the authorities will enable his gang's escape to Mexico. After Doyle makes his demands and warns that any attempts by the Cartwrights to interfere will result in the teens' deaths, Ben comes up with a plan to rescue Jamie and his friends, but is constantly undermined by the father of one of the boys, whose plan would surely result in death. Only after the teens' own attempt to escape fails (resulting in Lester being killed) does the father agree to go along with Ben's plan, which ultimately is successful.
- Johnny is an Indian scout who guides a widow in a military escort to the stage in Globe. They are given safe passage through Indian burial grounds by Chief Chato but only Johnny believes it is a trap that may lead to all their deaths.
- Fallon and Jeff reconcile after Fallon hears Jeff at his father's grave site. Blake turns down Farouk Ahmed's business offer realizing he was just trying to bail his brother Rashid out of trouble. Alexis is building a reception tent for her wedding on the Carrington estate which angers Blake. Her wedding plans are threatened when Cecil Colby has a heart attack when they are in bed together. Claudia is getting deeper and deeper into a confused mental state and seems to be planning something. Farouk tells Nick Toscanni that Blake was in country during Nick's brothers arrest for drug smuggling and Blake refused to give a bribe for his release before he hanged himself. Nick now blames Blake and he tracks Blake down at a retreat where they fight. Later Nick leaves Blake in the mountains where he fell off his horse down a cliff. While this is happening, Fallon's baby is kidnapped.
