Patrick Stewart was determined not to return to the Star Trek universe after his appearance in the film, Star Trek: Nemesis. He conveyed this to Alex Kurtzman when the latter met with him to pitch a series based on his character Jean-Luc Picard. Kurtzman brought along novelist Kirsten Beyer and screenwriter James Duff to convince Stewart that there was a lot to revisit in Picard’s character.

After much consideration, Stewart agreed to the series Star Trek: Picard, but not before setting a few conditions that the creators had to follow stringently. These conditions may have also sealed the fate of a potential fourth season of the series.

In William Shatner's film "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," the U.S.S. Enterprise is hijacked by a hippie Vulcan cult leader named Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) and flown to the very center of the Milky Way. In reality, the galaxy's center is the site of a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A*. In "Frontier," Sybok believes it's where God lives. Not a spiritual conduit to God, mind you, but the actual physical body of God Himself. Kirk (Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) think Sybok is mad, but are dragged along in his mad scheme.
When the Enterprise arrives at its destination, however, it seems for a few moments that Sybok is right. He and the Enterprise crew encounter and land on a mysterious planet, and God Himself (George Murdock) appears. Everyone is awestruck ... except for Kirk. When God asks the mortal characters for a starship to spread His Word,...

“I really believe that music is the heart of the narrative,” declares Emmy-winning composer Jeff Russo about the power of a great film or TV score. “It’s our responsibility to be the undercurrent to what the feeling of the story is; whether that feeling is love, hate, tension, anxiety. Any one of those feelings that the characters get to feel during the story should be underscored by us and brought out to a certain degree,” he says about the composer’s primary role. “Part of what I think a composer’s job is as well is to figure out where to not put music, not necessarily always where to put music, because a lot of times, the absence of music can also evoke certain feelings.”

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Episode 6
Continuing a kind of mash-up between 12 Monkeys and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard has entered into its final batch of episodes. At this point, the show has a lot going on: from a rogue Soong (Brent Spiner) to a new hybrid Borg Queen (Alison Pill And Annie Wersching), and of course, the still unexplained mystery of Q’s vanishing powers. But, for the most part, in Episode 7, “Monsters,” the show slows down. Here, we’re in Jean-Luc’s mind for about half the episode, which could have triggered a clip-show episode a la Tng’s “Shades of Gray” but thankfully didn’t.
Instead, Picard brought a batch of deep cuts and easter eggs from the entire Star Trek franchise, and a few other sci-fi franchises along the way, too.

Paramount+'s rebooted Star Trek franchise has done an incredible job growing its audience, message, and genre over the last five years.
Besides the five -- count 'em, Five -- series which will air this year, Simon & Schuster Audio has just released an all-new adventure, "Star Trek: No Man's Land," as an audio drama co-written by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson.
Both authors are well-seasoned Star Trek experts.
Beyer has played a large part in the creation and evolution of the many current Star Trek television series, serving as writer and producer on all the live-action series as well as a co-creator on Star Trek: Picard.
Since joining the franchise in 2007, Johnson has written and co-written the most Star Trek tie-in comics in Star Trek's history.

Star Trek’s relationship with tie-in media, specifically books and comics, is one of the largest and most expansive in the history of science fiction. Before the explosion of the Star Wars “expanded universe” of novels in 1991, Star Trek had been putting out at least four novels every year since 1980. This output hasn’t really changed much since the ‘80s, and though the official canonicity of Trek novels remains intentionally vague, there’s a long tradition of the writers of books and comics making every effort to make what tie-in media match with what you see on screen. But hardcore fans want to know, what counts and what doesn’t? Does what happens in the comic books, novels, and now, audio drama adventures, really count?
Co-writers of the new audio drama Star Trek: Picard – No Man’s Land — Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson — want fans to know one thing: They think it all counts.

Production has been suspended on Paramount+ series Star Trek: Picard after more than four dozen cast and crew members tested positive for Covid, sources have confirmed to Deadline. Lead Patrick Stewart is not among them, we hear.
Filming halted Monday on the show, which employs more than 450 staffers, but is scheduled to resume tomorrow. The outbreak affected both crew members, as well as cast in Zone A.
Production had been underway on Season 2 of the series which follows Stewart’s titular character into the next chapter of his life.
Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Evan Evagora, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Jeri Ryan, Orla Brady and Brent Spiner also star.
The series is just the latest forced to temporarily halt production because of a recent surge in Covid cases. It comes just days after production was suspended for NCIS, and pushed to February for NCIS: LA. NBC also has delayed filming for Chicago Fire because of Covid.

“Star Trek: Picard” Season 2 will see Jean-Luc squaring off against an old adversary: the Borg Queen.
Variety has confirmed that Annie Wersching will play the Borg Queen in the second season of the Paramount Plus series. Wersching will now be the third actress to take on the role after Alice Krige played the leader of the Borg Collective in the film “Star Trek: First Contact” and in “Star Trek: Voyager” series finale. Susanna Thompson also played the character in multiple episodes of “Voyager.”
Exactly how the Borg Queen will factor into Season 2 is unknown, but chances are it will involve some manner of time travel. An early trailer for the new season, which also gave fans a tease of John de Lancie returning as Q, hinted that time would be a major theme of the next installment of the series.

“Star Trek: Picard” is back for a second season in 2022 on Paramount+ and a new trailer, which teases the possibility that time travel might play a role in the story, features the return of John de Lancie as the omnipotent Q.
de Lancie also confirmed his appearance in the upcoming season during Monday’s First Contact Day celebration — in “Star Trek” lore, April 5 is the day humanity launched its first warp-capable vessel, which led immediately to first contact with Vulcan, setting in motion the creation of the Federation 100 years later.
de Lancie first portrayed Q — a member of a society of omnipotent beings collectively known as the Q Continuum, who pesters Picard as part of what he claims is a trial of sorts to judge Humanity’s worthiness to be a galactic race — in the pilot episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” Over the years Q seems to regard...

Paramount Plus revealed a teaser trailer for the upcoming second season of “Star Trek: Picard,” which will premiere in 2022.
The teaser trailer was introduced by Sir Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard for seven seasons on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” at the top of Paramount Plus’ slew of First Contact Day virtual panels. Additionally, it was revealed that production on the second season has already begun.
John de Lancie, who first portrayed the iconic character Q on “The Next Generation,” confirmed that he will appear in the second season alongside Stewart. Q shared comedic chemistry with Picard on the “Star Trek” series, often getting on the captain’s nerves. Picard initially deemed Q’s services unnecessary, but as the series progresses, Q morphed into a mentor role to Picard. In the episode “Deja Q,” he said Picard is “the closest thing in this universe that I have to a friend.

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers for Season 1, and spoilers for Stranger Things Season 2.
When Stranger Things Season 2 hit Netflix in 2017, I learned to hate the binge-model. Before I could catch my breath, I was already aware that it would take the entire season for Eleven to reunite with the boys, and I felt heartbroken. I didn’t mind the spoilers, I was just more frustrated that there wasn’t time to process all the twists and turns. From that point on (and maybe before) I rebelled, sometimes loudly, against the Netflix binge-model. For the most part, my cries for a more traditional release schedule were somehow heard. I mean, you can’t imagine either season of The Mandalorian dropping all at once. Similarly, Star Trek: Discovery certainty benefits from the weekly episode drop, giving fans plenty to talk about and think about until the next week.

This article contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Picard.
As the enemy starships are closing in, and all hope is lost, our heroes in a battered starship look up, and see that: yes, another ship has just warped in. They’re about to be rescued! Everything is going to be Ok!
In Star Trek, we’ve gotten used to this kind of last-minute starship rescue scene, with the most famous example probably being the Enterprise-e coming to the rescue of Worf and the Defiant in Star Trek: First Contact. But, in the Lower Decks Season 1 finale, we got the beginnings of what is becoming an eyebrow-raising Trekkie finale tradition.
So, in the case of the USS Cerritos being attacked by the Pakleds in the Lower Decks finale, the ship that comes to their recuse is the USS Titan, commanded by Captain Willaim T. Riker. That’s right.

First venturing into the world of Star Trek with J.J. Abrams’ 2009 film of the same name, Alex Kurtzman offered up his latest expansion of an iconic sci-fi universe with the short-form series, Star Trek: Short Treks.
The CBS All Access series consists of live-action and animated shorts, which examine different corners of the ever-expanding Star Trek universe. Centered on characters and themes that have yet to be fully explored, the series has been an opportunity to experiment with story and tone, while bringing new directors into the fold.
At this year’s Emmys, Short Treks became the first Star Trek project to earn a nomination for Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. Inspired in his work by Pixar’s skill in short-form storytelling, Kurtzman was of course pleased to see the series recognized by the TV Academy.
For the EP, the nomination only validates the mission he’s taken on in recent years,...

“Star Trek: Picard” premiered on CBS All Access in 2020. Starring Patrick Stewart as the title Starfleet admiral, it takes place 20 years after the events of “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the 2002 feature film that was the final big-screen adventure for the cast of “The Next Generation.” Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with top Emmy contenders from the show.
As the series begins, Picard is retired and jaded after Starfleet banned synthetic lifeforms due to a deadly incident on Mars. He also harbors anger and regret over Starfleet’s refusal to rescue Romulan citizens from a supernova. But he’s called back into action when he meets an advanced android (Isa Briones) who is the target of Romulan spies.

We’re heading into Emmy Awards season, and CBS is starting up its “For Your Consideration” campaign on many of its shows. Trek fans will be pleased to know that the network is pushing hard on Star Trek: Picard, which aired its smash hit debut season earlier this year. Fan and critical response was positive for the bold Next Generation sequel series, and CBS is hoping to turn that into a swathe of Emmy nominations for the cast and crew.
As well as suggesting the show for Outstanding Drama Series, the campaign to get the one and only Sir Patrick Stewart a nom for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series is leading the way. Stewart has received four Emmy nominations over his illustrious career, but never for Trek, so it would be a big deal if he could get some recognition for Picard.

While one of the most famous space operas of modern times—the Skywalker Saga—concluded last year, 2020 still has a number of fantastic tales aboard starships to look forward to. Some are dystopian, some are hopeful, and some tie into our favorite franchises. With plenty of Star Wars and Star Trek novels and television seasons to look forward to, it’s time to boldly take your reading (and watching!) where no reader has gone before…

There are only a few people who embody Star Trek as much as Sir Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard, and fans are rightly excited to have him back on the screen through CBS’s All Access. It’s also exciting to have celebrated spec fic novelist Michale Chabon on the writing team alongside Hanelle M. Culpepper, Kirsten Beyer (Star Trek: Discovery), and Akiva Goldman. Given that the...

It takes almost no time at all when talking with Michael Chabon to realize that the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” is a die-hard “Star Trek” fan. Given that he’s the showrunner of the latest “Trek” iteration, “Star Trek: Picard,” the 56-year-old has found it particularly satisfying to engage with the vast “Trek” fandom as the first season of “Picard” heads into its finale on Thursday.
“To get people’s super nerdy and super technical questions about what kind of class of starship is meant to be in that one image that you can only see if you freeze frame, that’s been so fun,” Chabon says via Skype while sitting in his home office in Berkeley, where he’s been sheltering in place with his wife, author Ayelet Waldman, and two of their four children amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for the “Star Trek: Picard” episode “Stardust City Rag.”]
“Star Trek: Picard” has flipped the script. So often in genre storytelling a female supporting character’s death is used simply as a way of adding to the experience and personality of a male protagonist. In “Stardust City Rag,” the latest episode of “Picard,” the roles are reversed. Following an even more shocking earlier murder, Bruce Maddox (John Ales), the robotics expert everyone has been seeking for the first five episodes is killed by his lover and protégé, Agnes Jurati (Allison Pill).
“For a lot of reasons, it made sense that Bruce Maddox would not make it through this episode,” episode writer and supervising producer Kirsten Beyer said. “The most important part was Jurati’s relationship to him and what it says about how committed she is to the mission she’s been assigned.”

Oh Dr. Jurati, how well hidden you were!
It’s a testament to the skill of the “Star Trek: Picard” team how little we saw this twist coming — even, though, with hindsight it was totally set up. And particularly well set up in this episode, “Stardust City Rag,” thanks to its writer, Kirsten Beyer (look for an interview with her at IndieWire tomorrow), a longtime “Trek” vet who cut her teeth on a series of “Star Trek: Voyager” novels before working as a staff writer on “Discovery” and co-executive producer on “Picard.”
That Agnes Jurati was a spy planted by Starfleet Intelligence’s Commodore Oh makes total sense. The last we saw Oh she was talking to Agnes on Okinawi and wanting to know all about why Picard had taken such an interest in her. That scene ended quickly, and next thing we know Agnes shows up at Chateau Picard...

Don’t go into Star Trek: Picard expecting a triumphant return for Patrick Stewart’s title character.
That’s according to the man himself, who sat down with GamesRadar+ ahead of the show’s hotly-anticipated debut later this week. Stewart was joined by the series’ executive producer Kirsten Beyer for a conversation spanning The Next Generation, Trekkies, and Brent Spiner’s Data, who we know will play a pivotal role in Picard.
So much so, in fact, that Jean-Luc Picard begins the show as something of a grief-stricken loner, one who blames himself (and only himself) for the death of his friend. Indeed, Patrick Stewart goes on to share that, at least in the beginning of Picard, Jean-Luc considers himself a failure in the eyes of Starfleet and the Federation.

The long wait for CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Picard” is nearly over. The latest addition to the legendary sci-fi franchise will premiere on CBS All Access on January 23, and its cast and executive producers closed out the network’s Television Critics Association 2020 Winter Press Tour on Sunday with a panel to discuss the upcoming series.
It included series stars Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Evan Evagora, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, and executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, Heather Kadin, and Kirsten Beyer. While the 10 episodes of “Star Trek: Picard” are full of familiar aliens and technology, Stewart noted that the show will explore a different side of the “Star Trek” universe, starting with ditching Picard’s signature uniform.
“I only appear briefly in my uniform, which was one of the rather presumptuous conditions that I laid down,” Stewart said during the show’s TCA panel. “I...

Just over a week before Star Trek: Picard debuts on CBS All Access, the return of the legendary Next Generation captain is as much a tale for the early 21st century as it is for the late 24th century, the Television Critics’ Association learned today in Pasadena.
Our world is pretty fractured, executive producer Akiva Goldsman stated Sunday of the subtext to the Sir Patrick Stewart-led series in the deepest tradition of science fiction. “The marginalization of others, not being open hearted or seeing with empathetic eyes, this seems to be a pervasive problem we all saw as ripe for healing,” The Beautiful Mind Oscar winning scribe added. “Star Trek does its bit to heal social ills.”

We don’t have long to wait until Star Trek: Picard, which will pick up the story of Patrick Stewart’s character after retiring from Starfleet in the aftermath of a life-changing mission. So far, we know that the series is going to provide a lot of surprises for Star Trek fans, while also bringing back some fan-favorite characters. The comic prequel Star Trek: Picard – Countdown #1 has now provided a tease though of who the new captain of the USS Enterprise is after Picard’s tenure.

Well, thanks to the newly-released comic Countdown #1 by Kirsten Beyer, Mike Johnson, and Angel Hernandez (h/t ComicBook.com), we can at least cross one name off the list: Cmdr. Geordi La Forge. CBS All Access dropped a trailer for its highly anticipated new series “Star Trek: Picard” at New York Comic Con on Saturday, featuring a look at the former captain fighting the test of time in a Federation where he is no longer welcome.
The trailer opens in picturesque vineyard, with Data painting a cryptic portrait of a cloaked figure standing on the edge of a stormy sea. When a pensive-looking Picard slowly approaches, Data asks, “Would you like to finish it, Captain?”
Picard responds, “I don’t know how.”
Flash cuts of a space fight abruptly end with Picard seemingly waking from a dream. What follows is the captain determined to stand up for the Federation and “what it should still represent,” only to be harshly told, “This is no longer your house, Jean-Luc. Go home!”

The highly anticipated Star Trek: Picard series is going to get an expanded story thanks to a prequel novel being written and a comic book series being developed. These projects are going to fill in the story gap between the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis and the upcoming Picard series.
The first prequel to appear will come from Idw, and it’s called Star Trek: Picard – Countdown. This is a three-issue comic book series that will “center around a single mission that would change the life of Picard.” That series is being written by Mike Johnson and Picard supervising producer Kirsten Beyer, and it will launch in November.
Following the conclusion of Countdown, the novel will be released. That novel is called The Last Best Hope, and it will “lead directly into the Picard television series proper, and introduce new characters appearing in the show.” The series is being written by...

On the panel were Sir Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, Harry Treadaway, executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, Kirsten Beyer, and Heather Kadin.
Stewart walked out on the Comic-Con stage to rapturous applause and immediately won over the audience with his first words. “We regret the absence of possibly the most important individual on this production, and no, I am not talking about Jonathan Frakes,” he joked. “No, the absence we all feel is the dog. We wanted to have him here, and he was excited to come. His name by the way is Dinero. I hope he’ll have an ongoing role to play this entire series.

Ahead of its debut at Comic-Con next weekend, CBS All Access released another look at Patrick Stewart’s return as his “Star Trek” Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
As shown in the brief teaser earlier this year, Picard has left Star Fleet behind following an unknown event. CBS has kept quiet about character and plot details, sharing only that the series will see Stewart reprise his role as the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” captain in “the next chapter of his life.”
As shown in the teaser and this image, this now includes a career as a vintner as the Picard family winery. The teaser only showed his face for a split-second, so the key art, which you can see below, represents the first full shot CBS All Access has put out.

Exclusive: “I’m really so delighted, and I can’t believe I get a chance to be part of this,” Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon told Deadline last fall about joining the writers room of CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Picard series as an executive producer. CBS All Access released a poster and a teaser trailer for the highly anticipated “Star Trek: Picard” on Thursday, which also marks the 25th anniversary of the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” finale episode. This is the first glimpse of Patrick Stewart reprising the beloved role.
Stewart, 78, helmed the USS Enterprise as Picard for seven seasons of “The Next Generation” and four movies. Despite assimilation by the Borg and other unsavory encounters with aliens and humans alike, Picard was a steadfast and moral figure, driven by duty but often alone, as he is the last of the Picards. The new series will follow him into the next chapter of his life
In March, co-creator Alex Kurtzmann had said that the new series would be a “thoughtful, psychological portrait” of Picard. “We all know what Picard means to the world and why he, like so many legendary characters on ‘Star Trek,...
