Basically, everyone knows Sydney Sweeney at this point. The young actress has had a string of successful projects after her breakout role in HBO’s Euphoria. We on Fiction Horizon have written about her more than once and with her new film, Immaculate, currently airing in theaters, Sweeney is often talking to newspapers and magazines as part of her promotion of the film.
Immaculate is a horror film with a religious subcontext that follows a young woman called Cecilia who has to face the horrors and secrets of a convent in Italy that has become her new home. Sweeney has expressed her enthusiasm over the movie and the role on more than one occasion, but as IndieWire reports, the actress is not proud of all of her past roles and the influence she had over her characters.
This is what she said:

‘Immaculate’ forgoes the inclusion of a post-credits scene, a decision rooted deeply in its self-contained narrative. Sydney Sweeney‘s portrayal of Cecilia drives this choice, as her character embarks on a journey of redemption and renewal through her devotion to God. Following a profound seven-minute brush with death, Cecilia interprets her miraculous resurrection as a divine calling to embrace the tenets of Catholicism and nurture her spiritual growth.
Cecilia’s lofty aspirations spiral into a grim reality as she steps into the Italian convent. The convent has a sinister agenda, a divine experiment centered around her. Driven by the belief in a nail purportedly from the cross of Jesus Christ, the convent clandestinely orchestrates Cecilia’s artificial insemination, blending her genetic material with supposed sacred elements. The outcome is a chilling pregnancy, leading the convent to...

In his review of the new horror film Immaculate (you can read it Here), JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray said the movie – which reunites Sydney Sweeney with Michael Mohan, who directed her in the erotic thriller The Voyeurs and the Netflix series Everything Sucks! – is “a decent throwback to Dario Argento-style Italian horror movies.” During a recent post-screening Q&a at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Boston Seaport, Mohan also revealed that one particular scene in the movie was inspired by the work one of my favorite grindhouse era filmmakers, Jack Hill – and that same scene also had to be salvaged with the help of Saw X director Kevin Greutert!
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared the information from the Q&A, reporting that Mohan said, “The biggest scene that did not work and I’m still not happy with is the scene when Isabelle tries to drown Cecilia. I studied a...

From the late 1960s to the 1970s, religious horror cinema reigned. Free of the censorious Hays Code, Hollywood could be transgressive again. Americans were generally more Christian 50 years ago than they are today, so scary movies where the horror literally comes from the Devil? Those struck right at the heart of the public.

Sydney Sweeney has been on a roll since her breakout performance in the hit HBO original series Euphoria and starred in several big blockbusters that are successful like Anyone But You, and regrettable flops like Madame Web. Sydney is more than an actress as she expressed profound interest and knowledge of cars and also gaming.
Being an actress isn’t enough to keep her busy because she also dives into competitive games like the battle royale game Apex Legends. The game was developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by EA and has been among the heavy hitters when it comes to multiplayer games. Sweeney’s outgoing and positive vibes are a perfect match with her favorite Apex Legend.
Mirage Is Sydney Sweeney’s Favorite Apex Legend Apex Legends was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in February 2019.
In a recent interview, Sydney revealed that Mirage is her favorite Apex Legend.

The Sydney Sweeney nunsploitation flick "Immaculate" is having one hell of an opening weekend. Not only does the film now hold the distinction of earning Neon's biggest opening weekend ever domestically, but the borderline Satanic panic coming from evangelical conservatives losing their minds over the film has been the type of grassroots marketing campaign a PR can only dream of. After the now-deleted account @AuroraFaced posted the best possible pull quote for the film by writing on X (formerly Twitter), "Libs saw how the anti-woke crowd embraced Sydney Sweeney as their new darling and right away had to shove her in this blasphemous, Satanic, feminist, pro-abortion, anti-life movie degrading Christians! This movie also debases Mary, Mother of the Christ!", Neon, who distributed the film, quickly turned the post into a viral poster, and most certainly inspired some ticket purchases in the process.

Sony had the big win at the box office over the weekend, with "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" taking the top spot on the charts, but additional context puts some qualifiers around that movie's win, since a $45 million opening weekend haul is a mixed bag for a film with a $100 million budget. While ghosts were being busted, though, two smaller horror movies had downright incredible weekends for their respective distributors. Neon's "Immaculate" and IFC's "Late Night with the Devil," bolstered by very strong buzz, had record-setting debuts for both labels. Put simply, horror stays winning.
Director Michael Mohan's "Immaculate" led the way with a $5.3 million debut, good enough to land at number four on the charts just above Mark Wahlberg's "Arthur the King" ($4.3 million). That represents the biggest opening weekend ever for a film released by Neon. Granted, the company behind movies like "Parasite" and "Ferrari" often opens...

To promote the release of Immaculate, director Michael Mohan participated in post-screening Q&As at select locations throughout the weekend. At last night’s showing at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Boston Seaport, an audience query about post-production challenges led the filmmaker to reveal how the editor of Saw helped save one of the film’s horror sequences.
“The biggest scene that did not work and I’m still not happy with is the scene when Isabelle tries to drown [Cecilia, played by Sydney Sweeney]. I studied a lot of ’70s exploitation movies featuring two women getting in fights, and I wanted it to be like a more direct homage to a genre known as nunsploitation,” Mohan explained.
“I studied some of Jack Hill’s work. Typically what they would do with those types of scenes is they would leave them in a medium-wide shot and just let it play out. The...

[Editor’s note: The following story contains major spoilers for the ending of “Immaculate.”]
If you’ve been praying to the genre movie gods for a pregnant final girl to wreak bloody havoc in the last act of a horror movie, “Immaculate” has answered you.
While the first hour or so of director Michael Mohan’s “Immaculate” is laden with familiar jump scares and ominous Catholic portent, all hell breaks loose in the last act. Sister Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), who embraced religious piety after surviving nearly drowning in a frozen lake as a young girl, is the new nun in town at an exclusive Roman convent that doubles as a hospice care center for dying nuns in their last days. Despite coming to the convent a virgin, Cecilia is stunned to discover she’s pregnant.
That’s because Father Sal Tedeschi, a former geneticist before he became a priest, has been running DNA experiments for decades on the sisters, with Cecilia his first...

Exclusive: The Sydney Sweeney & Paul Walter Hauser title, Americana, which was one of the prolific acquisition titles from last year’s SXSW, has finally seen its worldwide rights go to Lionsgate.
Why did a movie with big stars and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes take so long to sell? I understand part of the hold-up stems from the pic’s financier, Bron Studios, going into bankruptcy.
The Tony Tost written and directed movie follows local outsiders and outcasts in a small South Dakota town whose lives violently intertwine after a rare artifact falls onto the black market. Americana also stars pop singer Halsey, Eric Dane, Zahn McClarnon, Gavin Maddox Bergman, Simon Rex, Derek Hinkey, Toby Huss, and Harriet Sansom Harris.
Pic is produced by Alex Saks. EPs are Aaron L. Gilbert, Steven Thibault, Alison-Jane Roney, Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis, Terry Dougas, and Jean-Luc de Fanti.

The 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival — which runs March 8–16 in Austin, Texas — has cooked up an eclectic spread of studio crowd-pleasers, enterprising TV premieres, and indie gems aiming to break through. Here is some of the most promising fare.

The canon of Ilana Glazer-led indies about childbearing expands. Following 2021’s “False Positive,” Glazer plays pregnant once again in “Babes,” this time from a film script she wrote with Josh Rabinowitz in Pamela Adlon’s feature directorial debut. The Neon comedy follows Eden (Glazer), who gets pregnant from a one-night stand and seeks help from Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married mother of two. In other words, “Babes” lets the “Broad City” star do what she does best: lean heavily on the support of a best buddy.

Sydney Sweeney’s career is on an upward trajectory, and she has quickly become a successful actress, establishing herself as someone to keep an eye out for. Sweeney has delivered back-to-back hits across platforms. From the Emmy award-winning show Euphoria to her recent film, Anyone But You, Sweeney has shown remarkable range as an actress. And now, with her new film Immaculate set to release soon, the star might just have another hit on her hands.
Sweeney has built up an impressive portfolio by starring in several popular shows and movies. She kicked off her career by acting in teen dramas such as Pretty Little Liars, but she truly grabbed the audience’s attention as the popular but problematic Cassie in Euphoria.
Sydney Sweeney has not limited her acting talents to just television shows, though. She was the star of Anyone But You, playing the lead alongside Glen Powell, and the movie was well-received.

Strap in for another round of fast-paced governmental intrigue from Netflix's hit political thriller!
The Diplomat is a sharp-witted drama about American Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), who is in London trying to diffuse a tense international situation while navigating her rocky marriage to an ambitious career politician.
The couple's different (and often opposing) approaches to diplomacy cause both friction and success in their work with the UK's political team.
Also, Kate is secretly being fast-tracked behind the scenes to be the next US Vice President.
Has The Diplomat Been Renewed?
Yes! Proving to be an unexpected hit for Netflix, The Diplomat Season 2 renewal came just a week after Season 1 aired.
How did The Diplomat Season 1 End?
Season 1 ended with a London car bomb that may or may not have harmed Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).
Kate and British Foreign Secretary Dennison (David Gyasi) were in Paris when both...

The Motion Picture Association ratings board gave Zack Snyder’s sci-fi war film Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver and the Blumhouse horror production Imaginary PG-13 ratings this week, but they also sat through a movie that gave them some rougher material to sit through: the psychological horror film Immaculate, which reunites Sydney Sweeney – whose credits include Euphoria, the recent romantic comedy release Anyone but You, and the upcoming Sony Marvel movie Madame Web – with Michael Mohan, who directed her in the erotic thriller The Voyeurs. He did the same thing the last time we saw the former couple together at Michael and Chloe’s wedding a few weeks ago.

The "Saw" films will continue to slice and dice their way into theaters until morale improves -- or until audiences finally get tired of the über-successful horror franchise. If the universal acclaim and strong box office performance of "Saw X" proved anything, however, it's that a return to its roots was sorely needed. As the eleventh film in the series is scheduled to release later this year, that theme is about to continue in a big way.
We haven't been told much about the cast or even the plot of "Saw XI" since the sequel was first announced back in December of last year, though it's been easy to imagine the creative team picking up on the ongoing prequel storyline almost exactly where they last left off. While the involvement of the man, myth, and legend Tobin Bell remains unclear, we now know that at least one other franchise veteran...

Winner of the U.S. Documentary Competition Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2020, Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss’ “Boys State” embodied the best and worst of the eponymous tradition that it captured on camera: An annual leadership program, funded by the American Legion and held in almost all 50 states since the 1930s, in which 1,000 or so hyper-ambitious teenage boys from all walks of life are given a week to form and elect a mock government.
On the one hand, their film offered a semi-realistic microcosm of the American system at work, and an optimistic preview of what Gen Z — at least its most politically engaged young men — might bring to the table as they become old enough to and run for office. On the other hand, the otherwise inclusive “Boys State” reinforced the American Legion’s history of preserving the status quo through a “separate but not so equal” approach...

If executed well, twist endings can result in a fun experience. Having the rug pulled out from under you in a way that sheds new light on the entire film can make you instantly want to watch the rest of the film again. Whether it's "The Usual Suspects," "Fight Club," or "The Sixth Sense," the twist sends a blast of dopamine through your brain that leaves you walking out of the theater on a dizzying high.
Rarer are the twist endings that leave you utterly bereft and devastated, where that hit of dopamine is replaced by crushing defeat. Attempting this kind of ending can be enormously precarious, as you introduce the distinct possibility of completely alienating your audience. Sometimes that's the point, like in Michael Haneke's "Funny Games," but more often than not, you are looking to give the viewers an emotionally cathartic ending that is in keeping with the narrative.

Are you ready to play another game? The "Saw" canon isn't exactly the easiest challenge for casual fans to make sense of -- Tobin Bell's John Kramer was infamously killed off way back in "Saw III," for instance, despite almost every movie since twisting itself into knots in order to include him in the action anyway -- but the series has gone on to become one of the longest-running (and most consistently-performing) horror franchises ever anyway. That streak was all but assured of continuing after the latest installment, "Saw X," earned the best reviews out of any of the movies and went on to slash its way to the top of the box office. America and, indeed, the entire world are demanding more Billy the Puppet and the maniacal Jigsaw games ... and Lionsgate has been listening.

Kevin Greutert‘s Saw X takes place between the first two films of the Saw franchise and focuses on its protagonist, John Kramer/The Jigsaw Killer (Tobin Bell).
Kramer goes to a clinic outside of Mexico City and undergoes a procedure that he hopes will cure him of his brain cancer.
After he completes the operation, Kramer finds out that it was a scam that had many other victims who were also conned into having this procedure done on them.
In response, Kramer kidnaps the five people who deceived him: Dr. Cecilia Pederson (Synnøve Macody Lund), the daughter of the doctor who conducted the procedure, Finn Pederson (Donagh Gordon), Gabriela (Renata Vaca), Diego (Joshua Okamoto), Mateo (Octavio Hinojosa) and Valentina (Paulette Hernández).
Much like the previous films, Kramer forces his captors to survive death traps.
Cecilia, early on, reassured Kramer that the procedure would work, saying that his time was not up yet.

In a suburban neighborhood in the mid-1970s, all five teenage girls in the Lisbon family die by suicide, forever changing the lives of the boys who lived nearby. Sofia Coppola's 1999 film "The Virgin Suicides" is tragic and isn't always easy to watch, but it's a beautiful and eerie dive into the secret lives of teen girls, the reach of grief, and the malleability of memory. The film was Coppola's directorial debut and she wrote the screenplay as well, based on the 1993 novel by Jeffrey Eugenides.
"The Virgin Suicides" has gone through waves of popularity, as it was beloved on the festival circuit only to barely make back its budget at the box office. Later it found cult status on home video, joining the Criterion Collection in 2018. It's a deeply challenging film because the impending deaths of the girls loom over every scene — in a way, we know the...

Starring a young Hugo Weaving as a blind photographer and Russell Crowe as his hapless friend, Jocelyn Moorhouse 1991 film is elegant and subversive

Proof is a film that constantly flouts expectations. Darkly humorous yet sensitive, intelligent without ever becoming po-faced, it’s that exceedingly rare kind of movie that has something for everyone, while firmly maintaining its own distinct perspective. It’s a shame almost no one has seen it.
Martin (Hugo Weaving) has been blind since birth. He takes photographs to record the experiences that he himself cannot witness, but doesn’t trust anyone enough to truthfully describe them back to him – least of all his obsessive and vindictive maid Cecilia (Geneviève Picot). That is until an unfortunate accident introduces him to hapless dishwasher Andy (Russell Crowe), an honest sort despite his self-described “untrustworthy face”. As Past Lives, a tale of lost love and roads not taken, hits cinemas, get out the tissues as we recall some of cinema’s most heart-wrenching, tortuous romances
A bungled billet-doux, unjust accusations and the second world war drive a wedge between Cecilia (Keira Knightley) and Robbie (James McAvoy). To be honest, it probably wouldn’t have worked out anyway, but Cecilia’s kid sister (Saoirse Ronan) tries to make amends for having naively destroyed their romance in this adaptation of Ian McEwan’s tricksy novel.

It’s the story of a serial killer, narrated by those closest to him: his 13-year old daughter, his girlfriend and the captive victim he has earmarked for death. In the book. Aidan Thomas is a hard-working family man and a somewhat beloved figure in the small upstate town where he lives. He’s the kind of man who always lends a hand and has a good word for everyone.

War Sailor (Krigsseileren) is a series set in World War II, a Norwegian production that returns to the war theme, as was done with Narvik. A great series written and directed by Gunnar Vikene starring Kristoffer Joner, Pål Sverre Hagen and Ine Marie Wilmann.
The tale of a few men who, onboard ship, suddenly find themselves facing the outbreak of World War II, on the high seas and without weapons.
If you like epic stories, ones which have strength and style and, above all, human stories of overcoming obstacles, War Sailor plunges us into this three-hour story divided into three episodes that completely immerse us in a tale which is, above all, well narrated.
As already happened in Narvik, it is a film very close to the human side rather than to the events themselves, a series that tries to get closer to the human suffering than to any political or sociological key aspects.

“War Sailor,” a Norwegian war drama, depicts the life of Alfred Garnes, a working-class sailor who secured a position sailing with the merchant navy solely for the Allied side under the British during the onset of World War Two. We had witnessed the anguish he had endured throughout his years at sea. The people he met and the deaths he observed had a significant impact on his life. Some circumstances even brought out the worst in him, which tormented him for a long time. However, through it all, we see him with a lifelong friend, Sigbjorn, by his side. Sigbjorn had gone through the same situation as Alfred, and the circumstances had affected him as well, but with no family to care about, he was much more carefree than Alfred was. But he was committed to a promise that he had made to Cecilia. Before leaving with the merchant navy,...

Previously, in “War Sailor,” episode 2, we saw a great deal of deaths, including Hanna and Aksel’s, from the torpedo explosion on the ship they were on board. Even though the blast claimed Hanna’s life, Aksel survived and lost a leg, but he couldn’t bear the pain. Alfred gave him a lethal dose of morphine to set him free of his suffering. Alfred also killed the new sailor, who became aggressive after watching Aksel die. On an isolated raft in the middle of the ocean, only Sigbjorn and Alfred remained alive.
Meanwhile, a huge explosion in Bergen destroyed the house where Cecilia and her children were residing. However, Sigbjorn and Alfred were rescued by a ship and sent to a hospital in Canada. There, a few days later, Alfred received a telegram informing him of the awful death of his family. Alfred left the hospital early the next...

Previously, in “War Sailor” episode 1, we saw how Alfred Garnes and his comrade Sigbjorn were driven to board Norwegian merchant ships in order to aid the British allies. It was difficult for Alfred to leave his family in Bergen, but he promised to return safely. However, several years passed, and he was unable to return home. Cecilia kept taking care of her kids while hoping for his return. As several of the Norwegian ships had been torpedoed by the Germans, Alfred and Sigbjorn witnessed numerous deaths take place right in front of their eyes. Alfred and his crew had moved ships many times over the years, but when in New York, his two crewmates, one a 16-year-old child and the other a lady, were ordered to pack their belongings and return home. In the interim, the Brits began bombing a number of locations in Norway, which made Alfred wonder if...

The brutality of war tormented the common people of Norway with the outbreak of World War II. But a major victory against Hitler was achieved when many Norwegian merchant seamen were conscripted to help the British Allies during WWII. The Norwegian drama “War Sailor,” which is now available on Netflix, depicts how the war destroyed the lives of those merchant seamen and their families.
The story of “War Sailor” revolves around a sailor, Alfred Garnes (Kristoffer Joner), and his comrade Sigbjorn (Pål Sverre Hagen) as they travel aboard a ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. While Alfred and Sigbjorn struggled as unarmed citizens who had never joined the army, Alfred’s wife and three children were anxiously awaiting their return. Chilean director Francisca Alegría weaves together singing cows and family trauma in this thoughtful magical realist fable with an environmental message
First-time Chilean director Francisca Alegría turns up the arthouse dial past eleven right from the name of her debut feature. The Cow Who Sang a Song into the Future is a conspicuously poetic title that gives every impression that we’re in for a hardcore cine-patience tester. I have to admit that it made my heart sink. But while, yes, Tcwssf is a dreamy magical realist fable with an environmental message, Alegría weaves into her tale an emotionally satisfying, gripping family drama, with singing cows – and fish too.
It begins with the fish, dying by the shoal-load on the banks of a river, poisoned by pollution from a nearby factory. As the fish die, a woman gasps to the surface of the water. This is Magdalena (Mía Maestro), who drowned herself decades ago.
