Netflix is staying in business with Dragon, renewing its father-son comedy Unstable for an eight-episode second season, TVLine has learned.
Unstable stars Rob Lowe as Ellis Dragon, a “universally admired, eccentric, narcissist-adjacent biotech entrepreneur working to make the world a better place,” per Netflix’s official logline. To complicate matters further, Dragon is in an “emotional free-fall,” and his only hope may rest in his polar-opposite son Jackson Dragon (played by Lowe’s real-life son John Owen Lowe).

Unstable, the Netflix comedy starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, is heading back into production for its second season with a new showrunner.
Andrew Gurland, creator of FX’s Married, has replaced Victor Fresco as showrunner for the second season of the series after its renewal by Netflix for another eight episodes.
Production will begin later this month after it was interrupted by the writers strike back in May. Production on the second season started in late March and shut down at the start of May.
Unstable follows an introverted son (John Owen Lowe) who goes to work for his very successful, wildly eccentric father (Rob Lowe) in order to save him and his successful biotech company from disaster. Unstable has been hit by the Writers Strike. Production has been suspended on the Netflix comedy series. The streaming service had not yet officially announced a renewal for the comedy, but writers began working on scripts for season two at the end of March. Filming was set for later this spring.
Starring Rob Lowe, John Lowe, Sian Clifford, Rachel Marsh, Emma Ferreira, and Aaron Branch star in the Unstable series, which follows a father and son with completely different personalities. They try to repair their estranged relationship when introvert Jackson Dragon (John Lowe) goes to work for his eccentric father, Ellis (Rob Lowe).

Despite not landing an official renewal, production on Unstable Season 2 has been shut down.
Deadline revealed Thursday that the Rob Loe and John Owen Low series had been in production on its second season since March.
It's not uncommon for the streaming service to issue renewals as production is underway, as evidenced by the renewal for Sweet Tooth's final season this week -- all of which is already in the can.
Six of the eight scripts were reportedly complete to get the cameras rolling very soon.
Deadline notes that employees learned this week that production was being halted and that they were being laid off by the end of the week.

Exclusive: Unstable, the Netflix comedy series starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, is the latest show to have production hit by the writers strike.
Deadline understands that production on the second season of the series, which launched at the end of March, has been shut down.
We hear that the series, which hadn’t received a full, official renewal greenlight, was prepping at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood. There were six scripts finished out of a planned eight-episode run with principal photography planned for later this spring. Employees were told earlier this week that production was being suspended and that they were being laid off at the end of the week.

If you were, as I was, a big fan of ABC’s workplace satire Better Off Ted, it may feel slightly surprising at first that Netflix’s Unstable hails from the same creator — Victor Fresco, credited this time alongside stars Rob Lowe and John Owen Lowe.
Where Better Off Ted’s Veridian Dynamics stood as a paragon of corporate greed, Unstable’s Dragon is actively doing good for humanity while also making boatloads of money. The biotech firm’s founder and CEO, the improbably but impressively named Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), is no greedy stuffed suit but a charismatic genius entrepreneur who actually lives up to the sort of hype once lavished upon the likes of Elon Musk and Elizabeth Holmes. If Better Off Ted felt prescient in its cynicism toward business, Unstable’s sunny outlook can’t help but feel a little out of touch with the current disillusionment toward Big Tech and billionaires.

This Unstable review contains no spoilers.
Having real-life relatives pair up in movies and TV shows is a strategy as old as motion entertainment itself. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married while starring in the pioneering classic I Love Lucy. Dan and Eugene Levy both won critical acclaim and adulation for their father-son roles in the recently finished Schitt’s Creek. When audiences know that the actors are related in real life, it often feels like it adds an authenticity to the performances that otherwise wouldn’t be present.
Netflix is trying to take advantage of this long-running casting trend by pairing Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe together in a workplace/family dramedy mix that resembles shows like Parks and Recreation. The concept of Unstable is creative and zany on the surface, but does the acting and writing back up the proposed ingenuity of the series?

Rob Lowe and John Owen Lowe are taking their father-son relationship from reality to the small screen in the newly released teaser for the upcoming comedy series Unstable.
In the video, released Friday, the duo discusses their characters and what audiences can expect from the Netflix show. John says, “It’s about a father-son dynamic that’s very relatable but under a really specific lens, which is a father who loves being the center of attention and his son, who feels the exact opposite.”
The scripted comedy series was co-created by the Lowes and Santa Clarita Diet’s Victor Fresco. It follows successful biotech entrepreneur Ellis Dragon, who is a wild father on the brink of falling apart following the death of his wife. While the company’s employees worry and try to hold down the ship, Ellis’ son Jackson seems to be the only person who can save him and the company.

Rachel Marsh will play Luna, a genius biotech engineer who works in the lab with her friend and research partner Ruby.
Shy and awkward, Luna is happy to let her more outgoing partner do the talking for the two of them.
Emma Ferreira will play Ruby, also a biotech genius (let’s just stipulate everyone who works here is a friggin’ genius).

As previously reported, Rob Lowe will star in the project with his son, John Owen Lowe.

Rob Lowe and John Owen Lowe’s Netflix comedy series “Unstable” has added six new cast members, Variety has learned.
Sian Clifford, Rachel Marsh, Emma Ferreira and Aaron Branch have all joined the show as series regulars, while Fred Armisen, Tom Allen and Jt Parr will appear in recurring guest star roles.
“Unstable” was picked up to series at Netflix in April, with the Lowes having created the series along with Victor Fresco. The show follows an introverted son (John Owen Lowe) who goes to work for his very successful, wildly eccentric father (Rob Lowe) in order to save him and his successful biotech company from disaster. It is inspired by Rob and John Owen Lowe’s social media relationship. The Lowes and Fresco executive produce “Unstable,” with Marc Buckland also executive producing.
Clifford will play Anna, the CFO of the company run by Ellis (Rob Lowe), who has been with him since its founding.

File this under the most surprising TV news of the month:
ABC has decided against going forward with the Eden Sher-fronted spinoff of The Middle.
The show was said to be titled "Sue Sue in the City" and would have continued the story of Sue Heck as she finished college and got ready to start her own life in Chicago.
Brock Ciarlelli was also on board to reprise the role of Brad Bottig, Sue's best friend from The Middle. That casting decision made sense because Sue and Brad were such a dynamic duo on the original series.
Chris Diamantopoulos, Kimberley Crossman, Finesse Mitchell, and Aaron Branch were also attached to the offshoot as series regulars.

ABC is home to several comedies, but given that the show was a spinoff of one of the network's better-received comedies, it was a sure bet to land a series pickup.

ABC has opted not to pick up to series its Sue Heck-centered spinoff from hit family comedy The Middle. I hear the project may be shopped by producing studio Warner Bros. TV.
Titled Sue Sue In the City, the single-camera comedy stars The Middle standout Eden Sher as Sue Heck and comes from The Middle creators/executive producers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline. It was ordered by ABC to pilot in August, with Chris Diamantopoulos cast alongside Sher and fellow Middle alum Brock Ciarlelli as well as Kimberley Crossman, Finesse Mitchell and Aaron Branch.
The spinoff follows the twentysomething adventures of eternal optimist Sue Heck (Sher) as she leaves the small town of Orson to navigate the ups and downs of a career and young adulthood in the big city of Chicago.
Departing ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey had made developing series for the millennial audience a priority. This marks the second such comedy pilot,...

Silicon Valley’s Chris Diamantopoulos has signed on as a series regular opposite Eden Sher in ABC’s The Middle spinoff.
Diamantopoulos will play Nick, the owner of the hotel where Sue (Sher) takes a new job. He joins fellow series regulars Brock Ciarlelli, Kimberley Crossman, Finesse Mitchell and newcomer Aaron Branch who plays Otis, the hotel’s naïve but endearing bellhop/concierge.
The as-yet untitled Sue Heck spinoff follows the twentysomething adventures of eternal optimist Sue Heck (Sher) as she leaves the small town of Orson to navigate the ups and downs of a career and young adulthood in the big city of Chicago.
The half-hour single-camera comedy from The Middle creators/executive producers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline and studio Warner Bros. TV. received a pilot production commitment at ABC.
Heisler and Heline penned the pilot script and executive produce vie Blackie and Blondie Productions, which produces in association with Warner Bros.

Silicon Valley scene-stealer Chris Diamantopoulos is headed to the Windy City via a series-regular role in ABC’s in-the-works Middle spinoff, TVLine has learned exclusively.
The currently untitled project (formerly known as Sue Sue in the City) finds Eden Sher’s adorkable alter ego leaving Indiana to pursue a career (and young adulthood) in Chicago. She quickly takes a job working at a fancy hotel owned by Diamantopoulos’ “mercurial, charming and rich” Nick.
In addition to HBO’s Silicon Valley, Diamantopoulos’ recent TV credits also include Pop TV’s Let’s Get Physical, Fox’s A Christmas Story Live! and Showtime’s Episodes.
