You’ll never get anywhere in the music industry without a gimmick, or so they say, but how do you get attention if you don’t have a celebrity band member or the backing of Simon Cowell?
Oh sure, there’s talent. And it helps if your songs don’t all sound the same. Plus, having a drummer who’s aware of the old joke (“How do you know there’s a drummer at the front door?” “He doesn’t know when to come in!”) is also a bonus.
But the best way of grabbing the attention of the man on the street, bar none, is to give yourselves an outrageous, eye-catching, gimmicky name. Even if you sing like Jeff Buckley, play like Hendrix and have Charlie Watts banging the drums, calling yourself The John Smith Trio is quite the faux pas.

British musician Jack Bruce, best known as the bass player and vocalist of the power blues trio Cream, died Saturday at his home, his family and publicist said. He was 71. Bruce was one of the top musicians of the late 1960s, when Cream played its unique psychedelic blues tunes to packed houses in England and the U.S. The band - widely cited as the original supergroup - were known for hits such as "I Feel Free" and "Sunshine of Your Love," which featured Eric Clapton's innovative guitar riffs, and Bruce's vocals and roaring bass, backed by Ginger Baker's explosive drumming.

"Monty Python, are they still going?" Mick Jagger asks unwittingly in the hilarious intro video for Monty Python. "That's pretty amazing. They must be coining it. I bet it's expensive. Who wants to see that again, really? It was really funny in the Sixties." And on and on he goes, whining about "wrinkly old men trying to relive their youth and make a load of money," and even saying, "The best one died years ago." The Beatles or The Stones? A question as old as time (if time was around 50 years old). A question that has perpetually divided girls, boys, flora and fauna across the globe. A question which we’re going to answer definitively. Right here, right now.
Disregarding trivial topics such as album sales, tour receipts and Facebook likes (the contemporary currency of popularity), we delve into the creative crux of these musical monoliths and discover for once and all who is the bigger cheese.

Keith Richards delineated many of his wild experiences in his memoir, "Life," but there's more to the Rolling Stones guitarist than sex, drugs and rock and roll. Richards recently revealed that he nicked a few books from a local library, and probably owes "50 years" of overdue fines.

No one's disputing that Luhrmann can put on a show, but can he tell a story? The hedonism and vulgarity are ravishing to behold and the hand-tinted-photo aesthetic is gorgeous. Los Angeles — For one night only, the Rolling Stones were an up-and-coming band again.
The legendary group rocked a small club in Los Angeles on Saturday night for a minuscule crowd compared to the thousands set to see them launch their "50 and Counting" anniversary tour a week later on May 3 at the Staples Center.

We've been seeing a lot of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the rest of the Rolling Stones crew lately. This year, the English rock troupe is celebrating 50 years of mega-stardom in the music industry, an anniversary that makes them longest-running Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band in history. Now the quartet -- including Jagger, Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood -- are heading on tour to celebrate the milestone.
One visual artist who is particularly excited for the band's big year is German artist, Sebastion Kruger. A self-professed "New Pop Realist" and friend of the Stones, Kruger has been creating playful portraits of Jagger and company since the early days of his career as a caricaturist.
From cartoonish renderings to highly detailed, surreal versions of the wrinkled rockers, the artworks are a hilarious take on the pop culture icons.
Kruger himself will be turning 50 years old this year, which seems fitting.

Los Angeles, April 7: Rolling Stones' drummer Charlie Watts admits the death of his former bandmate Brian Jones in 1969 wasn't a shock, although it was certainly very sad.
The musician died after he drowned in his swimming pool.
"Shock? Jones dying? No. It was very sad, but it wasn't unexpected. We'd carried him for a few tours and he was quite ill," femalefirst.co.uk quoted Watts as saying.
Watts insists he still doesn't know what was wrong with Jones, who drank heavily and got into drugs earlier than the rest of the band members.
"We were young, we didn't know what was wrong with him. I still don't really know," he said.
"He always suffered from terrible asthma, and he drank heavily on the road.

Charlie Watts says Brian Jones' death 'wasn't unexpected'. The musician died in 1969 after he drowned in his swimming pool, but The Rolling Stones drummer admitted his former band-mate's passing wasn't a real 'shock'. He told The Guardian newspaper: 'Shock? Brian dying? No. It was very sad but it wasn't unexpected. We'd carried him for a few tours and he was quite ill.' The sticksman admitted he still doesn't know what was 'wrong' with Brian, who drank heavily and 'got into drugs' earlier than the rest of the band. Charlie added: 'We were young, we didn't know what was wrong with him. I still don't really. 'He always suffered from terrible asthma, and he drank heavily on the road and...

New York — If you're upset that the Rolling Stones won't be coming to your city on their upcoming nine-date tour, don't be too stressed – the rockers say more dates may be added.
"Normally when you announce a tour like this, you announce part of it, you leave it to be, you see what happens, you might do a date here and another date there. You don't want to be completely hand fast, so you do leave some dates in between," said Mick Jagger in an interview Thursday. "So we'll see what happens."
The Stones announced this week that they'll kick off their "50 and Counting" tour in Los Angeles; the date will be announced later. The second show is in Oakland, Calif., on May 5. They'll also visit Las Vegas, Toronto, Chicago and Boston, and wrap in Philadelphia on June 18.

New York — Ladies and gentlemen, the Rolling Stones.
With Wednesday's expected announcement of a new Stones tour, those words will again signal the start of a rock `n' roll show. Young music fans may wonder why there's still a fuss over dad's, or grandpa's, favorite band. Here are five reasons to care.
1. Living History: Elvis Presley is dead. The Beatles will never perform again. The Who is down to two originals. Membership of rock's Greatest Generation is fading. The Stones, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney are links to a special time in music history, and you can still see them in concert. If the Stones' form of classic rock moves you, it's hard to conceive of a band today building such an impressive catalog in the same style. Fashion, and the business, has moved on.
2. Live Band: They'll never admit it, but deep down the Stones surely know they haven't...
