Back to the Future star Lea Thompson stated that her mainstream film career ended after she had her kids. Thompson was a rising star through the 1980s but she was pushed to TV roles in the ’90s. Thompson found success in her role as Lorraine McFly in Robert Zemeckis’ three-part time travel flick. Before that, she was Tom Cruise’s pair in the 1983 film, All the Right Moves.

For Zoey Deutch, it’s all about the details.
The actor-turned-producer returns to the screen Friday in Quinn Shephard’s dark comedy Not Okay, and she plays Danni Sanders, a depressed young woman who Photoshops her way to Paris to impress an influencer (Dylan O’Brien). However, Danni’s plans quickly go awry when a terrorist attack coincides with her whereabouts, and instead of telling the truth, she opts to pose as a trauma survivor, achieving the overnight fame and attention she thought she always wanted.
As an executive producer on the Searchlight Pictures project for Hulu, Deutch welcomed the added responsibility.

"One, two, three...!" Freestyle Digital Media has released a trailer for an indie dramedy film titled Teenage Badass, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Grant McCord. This was supposed to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year before it was cancelled, and will now launch on VOD in the fall. Set in 2006, Teenage Badass follows a band when they score a shot to play on the local news. But as all of their dreams start to become a reality, the band's egocentric singer / songwriter threatens to make them lose everything they have worked for. The story actually follows the drummer, played by Mcabe Gregg; and the lead singer Kirk Stylo is played by Evan Ultra. Also starring Julie Ann Emery, Kevin Corrigan, James Paxton, Madelyn Deutch, Elsie Hewitt, and Dillon Lane. The tone in this trailer is all over the place, and it seems like just some...

Banana Split
Stars: Hannah Marks, Dylan Sprouse, Liana Liberato, Luke Spencer Roberts, Meagan Kimberly Smith, Haley Ramm, Jessica Hecht, Addison Reike, Jacob Batalon | Written by Hannah Marks, Joey Power | Directed by Benjamin Kasulke
April (Hannah Marks) has spent the last two years of high school in a relationship with Nick (Dylan Sprouse), from first frantic make-out session to final tear-stained breakup. In the aimless summer between graduation and college, the newly single April mends her heartbreak by striking up an unexpected friendship with an unlikely candidate: Nick’s new girlfriend, Clara (Liana Liberato).
With an oddball title like Banana Split I was expecting a quirky, just as oddball rom-com. However what you actually get is a touchy tale of two women who should be enemies, after all they’ve both dated and slept with the same guy, but instead find a common bond that leads to a sweet, tender platonic...

Dolphin Entertainment has acquired the rights to “Sisters Before Misters,” an original female-led comedy screenplay written by Janine Divita and Eric Holmes, and has attached Lea Thompson to direct.
Emerson Davis, Dolphin’s VP of development and production, is handling the development of the project and will oversee production.
The pic tells the story of struggling millennial, Isabel, an aspiring singer/songwriter, who offers to plan her disapproving, estranged sister Allison’s problematic wedding, despite having no experience in the field but with the hope of bringing her family back together.
“Janine and Eric’s script is both a hilarious and heartwarming comedy about the power of sisterhood, giving it a fresh take on the genre,” said Davis. “And, it is a dream come true for Lea Thompson to lead this project. Multi-hyphenate indie star Jennifer Westfeldt has signed with Verve Talent and Literary Agency.
The firm — which counts clients like “Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow, up-and-comer Madelyn Deutch and “Hidden Figures” screenwriter Allison Schroeder — has signed Westfeldt as a writer, director, and producer. She’ll remain with Innovative Artists for representation as an actress.
Westfeldt is eyeing significant feature projects where she can flex in numerous categories at the same time — like 2011’s “Friends With Kids” (her directorial debut), which she wrote, produced and starred in alongside Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd and Jon Hamm. Prior to that, she wrote and starred in the acclaimed drama “Ira & Abby” with Chris Messina.

Lea Thompson, the veteran actress who has directed her own daughter in her first feature, said on Thursday that getting sexually harassed during auditions “was like Kryptonite” – killing her ability to win roles in her younger years.
“I didn’t realize these things were unacceptable and how they kept me down all these years,” she said, speaking at TheWrap’s Power Women Breakfast in San Francisco. “I was in really bad auditions and people would start on me and it would take all my power away to the point where I didn’t get the job. The “spectacular” in Lea Thompson’s “The Year of Spectacular Men” is meant to be taken with a grain of salt — or rather, several shots of tequila, which is how Izzy Klein winds up tumbling into bed with dudes who don’t respect her. In an opening montage, the guys tell us who she is: insecure, neurotic, depressive, and “sexy in a goofy Special Olympics way.” They’re jerks. But she convinces herself each one is Prince Charming because she wants her fairy tale happy ending on page one. This un-spectacular recent college grad would rather kiss creeps than fix her flaws, which means the film’s plot is basically hurdling relationships on a treadmill. Izzy’s going nowhere but she’s always about to fall flat on her face. And it’s as exhausting for the audience as it is for her.

Family affairs are often depicted on screen as plot subjects. That’s nothing new. It is, however, rare and unique to see the family dynamic front and center in terms of the creative team. In the case of The Year of Spectacular Men, that’s actually part of its specific charm. Directed by veteran actress Lea Thompson (in her feature debut), it stars and is directed by her daughter Madelyn Deutch. In addition, co-starring with a scene stealing turn is daughter/sibling Zoey Deutch, who we’ve mentioned here is a future A-lister. Opening tomorrow, this movie brings a trio of creative family members together for a charming indie that will leave a smile on your face for sure. The film is an indie romantic comedy/coming of age story. That may sound like one of a million, but the fun tone does help to set it apart a bit.

The time has come to see the “manic pixie dream girl” trope from the other side. We’ve viewed countless depictions of attractively quirky women serving as plot points pushing their male lead counterparts over whatever hump they find themselves struggling to conquer, each a one-dimensional prop used before being discarded or thanked upon figuring out the solution. We don’t catch even a glimpse of their motivations, emotions, or psychology because their identities are non-existent. Whether they remain in the protagonist’s life or not is inconsequential so long as he smiles before the credits roll. We’re to accept his selfishness as endearing, his happiness a success. These women “save” him from despair and yet we only know them through his fetishized projections. Madelyn Deutch has flipped that script.

"Our 29th wedding anniversary is on July 23, and he gave me my two kids." And now, Lea’s making her big-screen feature directorial debut with those kids. The Year of Spectacular Men, out June 15, was written by her daughter Madelyn Deutch, 27, and stars her younger daughter, Zoey Deutch, 23. "We worked for four years on it, so even though it’s hugely collaborative with Maddie and Zoey, it’s really the first thing I’ve created, the first that feels like it’s my own," Lea said. Now, in a candid interview with Closer, Lea opened up about her marriage, surviving her parents’ divorce,...

"There's nothing accidental about any of this." MarVista Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Year of Spectacular Men, a feature film that marks the directorial debut of actress Lea Thompson. The film stars Madelyn Deutch as a young woman fresh out of college navigating the failures of post-college adulthood, ruining relationships with various men she meets. Zoey Deutch, who is the sister of Madelyn, co-stars with a cast including Avan Jogia, Nicholas Braun, Melissa Bolona, Jesse Bradford, Lea Thompson, and Brandon T. Jackson. This looks exactly like it sounds, even about a wannabe actress, but with a twist that a woman can't find the right guy - not that the guy can't find the ideal woman. It looks cute and funny. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Lea Thompson's The Year of Spectacular Men, from YouTube: The story of Izzy Klein (Madelyn Deutch...

The fourth annual Bentonville Film Festival, running May 1-6, will continue its overarching quest to increase gender equality and cultural diversity in the entertainment biz, both in front of and behind the camera.
The Arkansas-based event, co-founded by Geena Davis and Inclusion Companies CEO Trevor Drinkwater and sponsored by such companies as Coca-Cola, Walmart and AMC, has been committed to the ideals of pluralism in Hollywood well before the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements emerged on the scene. Davis herself has been at the forefront of instituting positive systemic change in media content since 2004 when she founded the nonprofit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the first research-based organization of its kind to, per Davis, “engage, educate and influence content creators, marketers and audiences about the importance of eliminating unconscious bias, highlighting gender balance, challenging stereotypes and creating role models and scripting a wide variety of strong female characters in entertainment and media.

Sisterly chemistry is the natural resource fueling The Year of Spectacular Men, an uneven but sparky comedy showcasing Madelyn Deutch and her real-life sib Zoey, star of such features as Why Him? and Vampire Academy. Revolving around a succession of romantic misadventures, the film was written by Madelyn, whose mostly witty dialogue and assured performance as an aimless college grad updates the archetype of the smart ditz with a modern sexual frankness.

It’s a cliché to start an interview by describing what the subject is eating, but for this story, it feels necessary.
Writer-actor Madelyn Deutch has been coming to Art’s Delicatessen in Studio City for all 26 years of her life. She ate her first pickle here and made a face that her mother, actor Lea Thompson, who’s been in Hollywood classics like Back to the Future, Some Kind of Wonderful and All the Right Moves, describes by squishing her whole face inward. Thompson started frequenting Art’s 35 years ago, when she first arrived in Los Angeles from suburban Minnesota.
“Can I have some old pickles?” Deutch asks a server she seems to know from her many visits to the restaurant. “They’re saltier,” she says to explain the request. “I'm a real weirdo because I come here to get the old pickles and a chocolate egg cream, which is chocolate milk and seltzer mixed together...

In 2009 a gelding trained and owned by a couple of cowboys from New Mexico won the Kentucky Derby running at 50-1 odds. Mine That Bird hadn’t won a single race in the United States before that and only qualified to run the Derby because of the stakes he’d won in Canada. Not only that, Mine That Bird was small and slightly “crooked up front,” as his trainer, Chip Wooley (Skeet Ulrich) says when he first sees him. He’s skeptical at first when he flies up to Canada to see him and advises his boss/friend Mark Allen (Christian Kane) to pass on him. But when he sees Mine That Bird whizz around the track he decides they need to buy him. Asking price, half a million. The Canadians who owned him had paid only $9,500 for him.
