“Outlander” is giving fans a little more time before they have to say goodbye — and giving subscribers more of a reason to sign up for a full year instead of just a few months. Season 7 of the time-travel romance will air in two parts, Starz said on Wednesday, with the first half airing this year and the second half waiting for 2024.
Season 7, as previously announced, consists of 16 episodes, the show’s highest order count since Season 1. Like Season 1, which aired in 2014 and 2015, Season 7 will be split into two eight-episode bunches — the “Droughtlander” is officially over on June 16. “Outlander” has already been renewed for a final Season 8, which will consist of 10 episodes and presumably air in 2025 or later.
It is currently unclear if the show, based on Diana Gabaldon’s series of historical-fantasy romance novels, will completely adapt the entire saga. Each season of “Outlander” thus far has adapted (roughly) one...

Outlander is popular for several reasons. For starters, it has excellent storytelling, detailing the life of a woman caught between two time periods. Additionally, the costuming is at par with the respective time periods and the acting is stellar. One of the show’s highlights is in the first season when Caitríona Balfe’s character Claire got married in a massive wedding dress. As it turns out, the gorgeous dress was so big that it needed its own car.

Put on your kilts and break out the bagpipes in mourning: “Outlander” is coming to an end. The hit Starz TV series has been renewed for an eighth and final season, the premium cable channel announced Thursday. The news comes ahead of Season 7 of the series, which will premiere in Summer 2023.
The news makes it unclear if the show, which is based Diana Gabaldon’s series of historical fantasy romance novels, will adapt the most recent installment, 2021’s “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.” Each season of “Outlander” has thus far roughly adapted one book in the series, with the upcoming seventh season set to cover 2009’s “An Echo in the Bone” and Season 8 presumably covering 2014’s “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.” That said, Season 7 is set to have an extended 16-episode run, while Season 8 will consist of 10 episodes, so its possible that longer length can help cover all three books.

Days after "House of the Dragon" flew into homes with its Gwen Stefani-colored wigs and a lecherous Targaryen uncle, HBO renewed the "Game of Thrones" spinoff series for Season 2. Plenty has been written about how its predecessor over-relied on misogynistic violence. Ironically, "Game of Thrones" creator George R.R. Martin has stated that he uses brutal means — like rape and murder — in his stories to expose oppressive practices that hurt women. England's War of the Roses, a time which saw lady royals like Marguerite of Anjou fight for power, inspired Martin's epic series. In a post-Roe vs. Wade America, it's vital to acknowledge the historic violence women continue to face.
The HBO adaptation neglected to show how women without the power of lineage or a noble title processed being pawns in a game of thrones. The series never spotlighted the conversations less privileged women would have had, nor does it...

From fashion model to actor, and currently taking on her most important role yet, a new mother, actress Caitríona Balfe looks to be having her most significant big-screen breakout yet with her awards worthy performance in the emotional drama “Belfast,” opposite Jamie Dornan. On this episode of the “Variety Awards Circuit Podcast,” Balfe talks about getting the call to shoot Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical story for seven weeks during the pandemic. She also discusses her gratitude to be working during a time where there is no further delineation between film and television, and having the freedom and creativity to explore both of the realms.
Finally, get out your favorite translation app, because Balfe teases the upcoming season of “Outlander” in her native Gaelic language, discussing where her character Claire and Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) are headed in the upcoming season, scheduled for release in 2022.

The cast of Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast,” including Caitriona Balfe, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds and Judi Dench, will follow young Jude Hill’s lead on the road to the Academy Awards. Variety has learned exclusively that Focus Features will campaign Hill for lead actor consideration during the awards season, with the rest of the cast going for supporting recognition.
Balfe and Dornan’s category submissions have been a question mark since the film’s debut at Telluride, riding the line between leading and supporting characters. Balfe, in many ways, has the more accessible and resonating role of the cast. Aside from delivering a beautifully orchestrated turn, it can easily be packaged with all the “Oscar clip” bells and whistles that you see in award-winning contenders. Her star has been growing for years now; she appeared in best picture nominee “Ford v Ferrari” (2019) and has gained a massive following as Claire Randall...

Will “Outlander” break through at the Emmys in 2020? The Starz romantic fantasy drama aired its fifth season this spring, its first new episodes in more than a year. The show has earned multiple Creative Arts Emmy noms over the years, but it has yet to crack the top categories. However, since it ended its season in May it’ll be fresh in voters’ minds. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with top Emmy contenders from the show.
The series follows a 20th century nurse, Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), who finds herself thrust into the past where she falls in love with an 18th century Scottish Highlander, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Their romance is challenged by war and strife, as well as time spent separated in different eras. In season five they were together in North America as the Revolutionary War approaches, but they continued to suffer hardships. Jamie experienced a near-fatal snake bite.

Diana Gabaldon, author of the original “Outlander” book series, had some choice words to say about one particular sex scene in the latest episode of the Starz television adaptation.
Gabaldon originally tweeted to say that episode 6 of Season 5, called “Better to Marry Than Burn,” was available to stream on Starz. But her tweets turned to criticism after a fan asked a question about a sex scene in a stable towards the end of the episode between leads Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire Randall, and Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Frasier.
“The stables scene was such a disappointment…what has happened to their chemistry?” the fan asked. “Everything looked so forced and unnatural.”

Gabaldon’s response sympathetic to the actors, but hard on the crew who works on the Starz series.

Outlander is long overdue for a discussion on Sci Fi Fidelity even though some might argue it’s more of a historical drama than a science fiction offering. However, we couldn’t resist sparing the time to admire the time travel implications of the first few episodes of season 5 which has main character Claire increasingly dismissive of any consequences her life-saving measures might have on history as we know it. For that reason alone, it deserves an episode of the podcast, but we also acknowledge the success of the show given how long it has lasted and found a sizable fandom on Starz.
Before we dive deep into the first two episodes, as is our wont, we take some time to look back at the story that has led Outlander across two decades and as many continents. Claire Randall’s time as a World War II surgical nurse has served her well over the seasons,...

The Outlander universe looks set to continue on Starz for some time to come as the Lionsgate-backed network talked up plans to keep the series on its air for some time and plot a slew of spin-offs, sequels and story extensions.
The fifth season of the drama is set to launch on February 16 and the Sony Pictures Television-produced series has been commissioned through season six.
Starz is now talking to the producers about more. “As long as the fans continue to crave the story, we’ll continue to have Outlander on the air,” Jeffrey Hirsch, president and CEO, Starz, told Deadline. “We are constantly talking to our partners at Sony and the show continues. We’re excited about season five and because we bought seasons five and six [together], we feel that arc is great and Ron and Meril are doing a great job.”

Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe may play love interests as Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall on Outlander, but sadly, they're only friends in real life. Still, Sam and Caitriona often exchange sweet looks at red carpet events, and Sam frequently shares photos of the pair hanging out on Instagram. Back in October 2016, Sam gushed to Vanity Fair about what it was like working with Caitriona on the show, saying, "It's always hard when we're apart, actually, because she's a great person, great to come to work with, and a very good actress." For a very long time, Netflix subscribers have been deprived of one of the greatest fantasy shows about a time-traveling WWII nurse who falls in love with a handsome Scottish warrior in the 1700s . . . Ok, fine, Outlander is the only fantasy show with that storyline (but that doesn't make it any less great).
The Starz series is about to embark on its fifth season, but luckily, anyone who hasn't yet been acquainted with the epic romance between Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) will be able to get a taste come May. For the first time, Netflix has acquired the series, and plans to make the first two seasons available for streaming on May 27.

As we look ahead to this year’s Emmys, one lingering question repeatedly comes to mind: What does “Outlander” leading man Sam Heughan have to do for some Emmy attention?
Heughan has missed out on nominations the last three seasons, just like co-star Caitriona Balfe, who has unfairly suffered the same fate. Last year we opined that Heughan was being unfairly snubbed because of the TV academy’s “slap-the-stud” bias against dashing leading men. This year, we hope Emmy voters look past his good looks and star appeal and recognize his consistently strong performances this past season in the Best Drama Actor category.

This season, though, the actress continues, “we get to see this woman, and this couple, choose their home and sort of choose how they want to live their life and what that community that they want to build from the ground up,...

“This is a very different side of Claire this season,” reveals Caitriona Balfe in our exclusive webcam interview (watch the video above) about the upcoming fourth season of Starz’s smash hit romance drama “Outlander.” “It was quite an adjustment for me,” the actress admits. “The beauty of being on a long-running show is that you get to be surprised by your character still, and this is a much more settled version of Claire. We see a much more nurturing side of her. Before, it was a lot of the drama of discovering love, or being a professional or the surgeon and that being the focus. But this, it is much more about home, and creating that and the value of having that.”
