All Arts’ upcoming non-fiction feature “Manhattan Theatre Club, a Home for Artists” will explore the 50-year history of one of the most impactful off-Broadway theaters in New York. Helmed by the club’s very own Lynne Meadow and Barry Grove, the film stitches together archival footage and photos and interviews with stars like Laura Linney, Edie Falco, Sam Waterston and Sarah Jessica Parker.
“Through their stewardship of Manhattan Theatre Club, Lynne Meadow and Barry Grove have left an indelible mark on the theatrical landscape for decades to come,” said Joe Harrell, executive producer of All Arts, a Wnet group streaming platform and broadcast channel based in New York. “Their story champions the vital role of nonprofit theaters in allowing artists to take risks, explore innovative ideas and challenge conventions.”
The Manhattan Theatre Club was founded in 1970 at Stage 73 but took off under the guidance of Meadow as artistic director and Grove as executive producer.

One of the most symphonic works of August Wilson’s ten-play cycle about Black experience in the 20th Century, The Piano Lesson takes place in Pittsburgh in 1936, as the Great Migration was delivering African Americans to an uncertain future in the North, even as the brutal legacy of their Southern past maintained its hold on them. That difficult reconciliation with the promise of freedom is represented through a brother and sister at odds over the family heirloom, a piano polished with the tears and blood of their late mother.
The musical instrument at the center of their standoff is among Wilson’s most powerfully loaded symbols, its woodwork adorned with ornate carvings of the siblings’ enslaved ancestors done by their great grandfather. And its history is recounted here as a mesmerizing invocation of the past by Samuel L. Jackson in a thrilling return...

With 34 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Monday morning. Among the most surprising 2022 Tony Awards nominations snubs was Katrina Lenk, who plays Bobbie in Marianne Elliott’s reimagining of the late Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” The production merited nine nominations, including Best Musical Revival, Best Director, Best Featured Actor (Matt Doyle), and Best Featured Actress. Lenk previously won a Tony Award for her performance in Best Musical-winner “The Band’s Visit.”

The 2022 Outer Critics Circle nominations were announced Tuesday. They honor the best of the 2021-2022 Broadway and Off-Broadway season. “The Lehman Trilogy” scored the most nominations with nine bids, followed closely by the Off-Broadway musicals “Harmony” and “Kimberly Akimbo,” which scored eight nominations apiece.
Special Achievement Awards will be presented to “How I Learned to Drive” stars Johanna Day, David Morse and Mary-Louise Parker, as well as “Lackawanna Blues” star Ruben Santiago-Hudson, to mark their outstanding returns to roles they originated two decades ago. The 2021-2022 Broadway season has been quite a busy one for actor Brandon J. Dirden. First he appeared opposite Phylicia Rashad in Manhattan Theatre Club’s presentation of Dominique Morisseau‘s play “Skeleton Crew” this past winter. Now he can be seen in Second Stage Theater’s revival of Richard Greenberg‘s 2003 Tony-winning play “Take Me Out.” After having previously appeared in award-winning Broadway productions of “Clybourne Park” (2012), “All the Way” (2014), and “Jitney” (2017), will either of Dirden’s two main stem appearances from this past year make him a first-time Tony nominee?
In “Skeleton Crew,” Dirden played Reggie, the manager of one of the last auto stamping plants in Detroit. The company is on shaky ground and the workers have to make choices about how to move forward if their plant goes under. All the while Reggie is torn between doing right by his work family and the red tape in his office.

Directed by Scott Ellis, Take Me Out also features cast members Julian Cihi, Hiram Delgado, Brandon J. Dirden, Carl Lundstedt, Ken Marks, Michael Oberholtzer, Eduardo Ramos and Tyler Lansing Weaks.
The play charts the aftermath when a big-time baseball star (Williams) comes out as gay.

The ensemble of Second Stage Theatre’s revival of “Take Me Out” has waited over two years for the first pitch of this baseball drama on Broadway, but after the lengthy pandemic delay the remounting finally opened on April 4 at the Hayes Theater. Playwright Richard Greenberg’s Tony-winning play centers on fictional baseball team The Empires and chronicles the personal and professional fallout after the center-fielder Darren Lemming (Jesse Williams) reveals that he is gay. The ensemble boasts recognizable faces including Williams and Patrick J. Adams in their Broadway debuts, plus Broadway mainstays Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Brandon J. Dirden, and others under the direction of Tony-nominee Scott Ellis.

As of now, there is a lot of uncertainty around Covid when it comes to Broadway. Within the past couple of months, several shows had to suspend performances due to positive cases in their casts, some others had to close permanently, and a couple more are taking hiatuses. The American Theatre Wing also hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet.
With that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are currently 11 productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tonys? Below is an overview of each play as well as the awards histories of their authors, cast, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

Ten days after her first Broadway show ended an acclaimed run, playwright Dominique Morisseau has just opened another. The Tony-nominee penned the libretto for musical “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations,” which closed after nearly 500 performances on Jan. 16, and her drama “Skeleton Crew” has now finally made the leap from Off-Broadway to the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on Jan. 26. Set in Detroit in 2008, the play is about the impact of the looming closure of a steel plant on four of its workers.
Ruben Santiago-Hudson directs the production, returning to the Friedman just two months after he wrapped performances of his own play “Lackawanna Blues” at the venue. Phylicia Rashad stars as Faye, a factor worker and union rep on the cusp of her thirtieth anniversary working at the plant; the play marks Rashad’s return to Broadway after over a decade away. In the most cramped of times – days as economically and emotionally pinched as the ones we’re living through now, and the ones we survived (or didn’t) in 2008 – theater can remind us of, or point the way to, some sense of emotional generosity, of expansive spirit, of connection. Dominique Morisseau’s Skeleton Crew does all that and more, finding hope in the unlikeliest of places, like a cluttered, ramshackle break room of a noisy, about-to-fail factory in an about-to-fail city like Detroit.
Directed with vitality by Ruben Santiago-Hudson – his second victory this Broadway season following the fall’s Lackawanna Blues – and performed by an ensemble cast that matches a powerful Phylicia Rashad, Skeleton Crew is a play that feels even more pertinent now than it did when it landed in a stellar Off Broadway production back in 2016. The play was terrific then. It’s essential now.

This Evil review contains spoilers.
Evil Season 2 Episode 2
Evil season 2, episode 2, “A Is for Angel,” finds a new twist in the series’ main thrust. It is a monster-of-the-week installment which may result in an exorcism, but this time the intruding influence is not demonic. Raymond (Brandon J. Dirden), a parishioner at St. Johns, is possessed by an angel, or so he claims. On the surface, it may appear the presence may not be as malignant as a servant of Satan, but it is equally diabolical.
The designation of angels and demons, black and white magic, is a form of spiritual racism. During the course of the episode, Dr Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) brings up the evils angels have done, according to the Bible, at the behest of God. She even cites Saint Augustine. Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi), of course, just gives her a quizzical look. While the show only cites a few examples,...

March was supposed to be a big month for National Lampoon.
The content production company that hung out an “Under New Management” sign last year had scheduled a series of 50th anniversary celebrations this year designed to spur its revival. The plan was to use podcasts and live events to introduce a new generation of subversive comedians affiliated with the brand name that helped launch the careers of John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and others.

Updated with backstage video: The Americans writers Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg went through a long list of thank-you’s after taking the stage to accept their Emmy on Monday for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, including their “diehard, slightly treasonous” fans.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Americans” series finale, “Start.”]
The ending to “The Americans” is meant to invite questions; more to the point, it’s meant to invite the audience to provide answers themselves. The open-ended conclusion to so many stories in FX’s top-tier drama series are deliberate and fitting, as creator Joe Weisberg and co-showrunner Joel Fields purposefully crafted the series finale to provide emotional closure instead of hard-and-fast answers.
But that’s not going to stop people from asking.
At the Atx Festival Sunday afternoon, the cast and creators gathered for a panel discussion about the finale. Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich, Holly Taylor, Keidrich Sellati, Brandon J. Dirden, director and executive producer Chris Long, as well as the two men known around set as the J’s, sat down and dug into the nitty gritty details of that pivotal last hour.
Below, are the highlights — including some intriguing clarifications...

It’s barely been two weeks since their critically acclaimed series wrapped its six-season run on FX, but the cast and creators of “The Americans” reunited Sunday at the Atx Festival in Austin, Tex. to deconstruct the “heartbreaking” series finale.
On hand were showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, executive producer Chris Long and series stars Keri Russell (Elizabeth Jennings), Matthew Rhys (Philip Jennings), Noah Emmerich (Stan Beeman), Holly Taylor (Paige Jennings), Keidrich Sellati (Henry Jennings), and Brandon J. Dirden (Dennis Aderholt).
Russell said she was surprised at first by the finale, which saw the Jennings return to Russia without their children, Paige and Henry. But “it just felt right,” she said. “I wanted this couple to pay in some way, and they paid in the worst possible way. It’s heartbreaking.”
Agreed Weisberg, “That’s a hell of a toll,” who along with Fields recounted that the finale had...

It was only appropriate that the Atx Television Festival end with The Americans as the FX show recently had its series finale. The packed house at the Paramount Theatre was filled with emotion as they aired of the final scenes appropriately set to the tune of U2’s “With or Without You” from the last episode before actors Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich, Holly Taylor, Keidrich Sellati, and Brandon J. Dirden came out on stage with showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg and director/executive producer Chris Long. The ending of the show, which split up the Jennings clan, had fans all up in their feelings and chomping at the bit for a spinoff with Holly Taylor, who plays Paige.
During the panel, showrunners jokingly mentioned spinoffs casually, specifically with siblings Paige and Henry (Keidrich Sellati), who started playfully bickering on stage like brother and sister.
For Taylor, she kept it casual as well.

It’s happening, people! This is not a drill: At the end of “Jennings, Elizabeth,” the title character gets a call from her husband, packs a go bag for the road, and she’s on the run!
After a tense hour packed with close calls — decisions that, had they gone the other way, would’ve ensured the Jennings’ capture instead of merely triggering their flight — the penultimate episode of the series started the countdown clock that will end next Wednesday night: Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) are ready to skip town, but who do they tell and who will come with them? Paige (Holly Taylor) is livid with her mother and might resist packing up with her parents right now. Henry’s (Keidrich Sellati) school might be too far away.
And what about Stan (Noah Emmerich)? His theory has been rebutted at every turn,...

But what was that note he left for Oleg (Costa Ronin)? How will Paige (Holly Taylor) and Henry (Keidrich Sellati) factor into the endgame? And how seriously should we take Stan’s ominous foreshadowing: “Every time I go down there, someone ends up dead”?

It's finally here guys! We are 15 days away from the premiere of the final season of FX's hit series The Americans. This season looks jam packed with action, intrigue, and hopefully, answers. The show stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, who are deep undercover Russian spies in Ronald Reagan-era 1980's America. This show is so fantastic. It really gives us a different look at what was going on in the end of the Cold-War era. Here's a rundown on what's been happening on the show:
After a particularly fraught mission, Philip and Elizabeth decide to end their tour and take their family home to Russia. However, a game-changing development in one of their ongoing cases forces them to abandon those plans for the sake of the motherland. Now, Paige delves deeper into the family business, even as Philip takes a step back from it.
