Quoc Dang Tran’s adaptation of the manga “Shizuku No Kami,” Drops of God released its final episode this week, and things went as perfectly as you could imagine for the two competitors. Meeting each other for the first time in a competitive circumstance, Camille Leger and Issei Tomine considered each other natural foes because they both competed for Alexandre Leger’s inheritance worth millions. However, over the course of eight episodes, the rivalry turns into something beautiful that needs to be witnessed to be understood. From the get-go, one might’ve found Issei to be unnaturally stoic and somber, but when you think about his upbringing, you understand the reasons behind his pale demeanor. However, the series explores how good company finally changes Issei into a happy and jubilant young man, and here’s how it happens:

Sometimes, the quickest shortcut to high drama is immense stakes on simple terms. That’s certainly true for “Drops of God,” the Apple TV+ series that closes out its season this week. The latest of the platform’s multilingual creative successes (including “Pachinko” and “Acapulco”), this eight-part series dives into an unusual gambit to split up the massive inheritance of global wine expert Alexandre Léger (Stanley Weber). In order to prove their worthiness as the heir to the world’s largest private wine collection and to shepherd his publishing empire, two contenders are put through a series of tasks. His daughter Camille (Fleur Geffrier) and his longtime pupil Issei Tomine (Tomohisa Yamashita) face off in a series of challenges that test both their palates and their ingenuity.

We may never see other phenomenon like “Squid Game.” Hopefully we do. The Emmys are the kind of voting body/cultural institution that should get that yearly kind of external shakeup, just as film awards have seen non-English language productions catch fire with the public and capture awards attention. Getting to that point for “Squid Game” meant legendary word of mouth, Netflix backing, and a quality series with elements that made voting for it all the easier, a perfect Emmys storm.
But even if those lightning-in-a-bottle circumstances are seemingly impossible to recapture on purpose, the success of “Squid Game” did lay out a roadmap for other potential international hits to succeed on their own. A year after a genuine phenomenon, it seems like the TV world has largely waited for Season 2 of that show to be the next international series to enjoy that kind of success.
What if we didn’t have to wait?...

Tadashi Agi’s eponymous manga has inspired Quoc Dang Tran to create the Apple TV show Drops of God, which focuses on the unexpected rivalry between the daughter of an enologist and his mentee. Camille and Issei find themselves locked in competition over who gets to inherit Alexandre’s estate and wine collection, sparking off a series of events where each competitor’s past life is brought up. In the previous episode, Camille and Issei undertook the first round of competition, but due to self-doubt, she input the wrong answer, leading to Issei getting the first victory. "A full bodied competition that will keep you guessing with every sip." Apple has revealed the first official trailer for a compelling drama series titled Drops of Gold, created by the French-Vietnamese writer Quoc Dang Tran. Drops of Gold is such a luscious, delicious title for this series about wine, I'm sold purely based on that alone. Just wait until you hear the premise! A woman discovers the world's greatest wine collection that's left by her estranged father and competes against a Japanese man to claim her inheritance. "Biological daughter versus spiritual son: the duel is about to begin. There are three tests to break the tie, all related to wine tasting. The winner will take ownership of Léger's empire, the loser will leave empty handed. But how could Camille win such a duel? She knows nothing about wine, and worse: she has never drunk a single drop." This sounds deliciously fun!

Lille’s Series Mania Forum is kicking off today with a packed schedule of talks, screenings and competitions.
Fighting it out in International Competition are the likes of Prime Video’s Toni Collette starrer The Power, Haven of Grace from Magnetic Beats director Vincent Maël Cardona, and Quoc Dang Tran’s Apple TV+ series Drops of God.
They compete against Greek series Milky Way, which opened the festival, Viaplay’s futuristic Russell Tovey drama The Fortress, Red Skies from Israel, The Actor from Iran and Fleeting Lies from Spain. Each will have its world premiere at the event.
The Power is a fantasy series set in a world where the physical balance of power between men and women switches when electric arcs emerge from the fingers of teenage girls all around the world. Debuting later this month, it comes from Sister, the UK producer behind Chernobyl and is based on Naomi Alderman’s sci-fi novel.

With an International Panorama spangled by gems – think Spain’s “Apagón,” Sweden’s “Blackwater,” and Canada’s “Disobey” and “Little Bird” – Series Mania also weighs in this year with one, if not the, strongest and most mouthwatering of international competitions in its history.

The restructures, layoffs, cancellations and a maybe-strike currently impacting the U.S. TV industry rippled through the halls of the Berlinale Series Market this week as senior execs forecasted an international future.
Mass redundancies at the likes of Disney, AMC, Paramount and Netflix in recent months and major strategic rethinks from the studios and streamers were the talk of the market. Among the chatter was a sense this may lead to a wave of non-u.S. activity.
Shades of Blue creator Adi Hasak didn’t mince his words when he described U.S. TV as a “disaster zone” Monday. Hasak, who is currently making shows in Scandinavia and the Middle East, was heavily critical of Disney in particular for a strategy that he deemed akin to a “mental breakdown.”
And he wasn’t the only big name pointing to U.S. strife — albeit the others perhaps less forcefully.

Exclusive: Universal International Studios (Uis) and Australian indie Matchbox Pictures are developing a TV adaptation of Adrian McKinty novel The Island.
Published last year, The Island follows Heather Baxter, who marries Tom and moves from a small country town to Seattle. “I think we need to find a way to avoid the U.S. brainwash,” said Newen Connect CEO Rodolphe Buet at this morning’s Berlinale Series Adapting to the Market session.
The head of the French distributor urged global buyers to stop “copying too much from the U.S. audience” as he cited research that showed the streamers have far more U.S. and UK shows on their platforms locally than they do from the rest of the world.
Ruth Berry, ITV Studios Head of Global Distribution, struck a more positive tone when she said stories in foreign languages have become “far more accessible” due to audiences being more willing to watch dubbed or subtitled shows, which is “clearly an exciting opportunity.”
And Zdf Studios Vice President of Drama Robert Franke is “not too afraid” of “U.S. brainwash” as the market over the past decade has turned from “push to pull.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has picked up Drops of God, a series set in the world of fine wine based on a Japanese manga property, from Legendary Entertainment.
Deadline understands that the streamer beat out a number of suitors to land the international series, which is in multiple languages including English, French and Japanese.
However, the most interesting element of the deal is that it marks one of the first times that Apple has dipped its toe into international co-productions and licensing; the majority of its scripted series to date have been fully owned originals. What do Idris Elba, Lupin superstar Omar Sy and emerging French-Vietnamese writer Quoc Dang Tran have in common? Other than their obvious creative skills, they are among a growing number of stars born outside the U.S. who have signed talent deals in the last year. Deadline estimates as many as 20 first-look or multi-title deals have been struck by global streamers or LA-based studios since the beginning of 2021.
Back in May, HBO Max announced it had locked in Sy into a first-look deal to make international shows for the streamer, with the actor-producer developing and producing content out of his native France. Where’s The Next ‘Crown’ Coming From? Deadline’s Comprehensive Guide To The U.S. Streamers In Europe
The streaming landscape is changing at a rate of knots. The biggest U.S. players are looking for new revenue streams and growth areas, and, in 2022 much of that that growth is coming from European TV. These platforms’ activity in the continent was all anyone could talk about at this year’s European TV markets, and each is rolling out swiftly across multiple territories, ordering reams of content and placing commissioners in strategically important nations. Here, Deadline has taken the eight biggest U.S. offerings — Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Discovery+, Apple TV+, Peacock and Paramount+ — and compiled a comprehensive guide to their activity in Europe, examining strategy, commissioners and, of course, the best content. Read on.

Disney+’s French historical drama Oussekine will present the “dark part of our national history books,” according to its creator, who sought inspiration from Ava DuVernay’s U.S. Netflix smash When They See Us.
Antoine Chevrollier’s four-parter, one of the first Disney+ France originals to be greenlit, tells the story of the tragic death of Malik Oussekine, the response of his family down the years and the ripple effect on French society. In 1986, the young French-Algerian student was chased and beaten to death by police at a protest against immigration restrictions, which were scrapped days later after the protests intensified in the wake of Oussekine’s death.
Launching on adult-skewing vertical Star on May 11, the show features Messiah‘s Sayyid El Alami as Malik and Succession’s Hiam Abbas as his mother Aicha Oussekine and is the first to be showrun by The Bureau director Chevrollier, who oversaw...

Universal Studio Group Chair Pearlena Igbokwe says the “arms race” to sign creative talent on exclusive deals is “subsiding” as the scripted market readjusts economically.
Igbokwe — whose studio houses Universal International Studios, Universal Cable Productions (UCP), Universal Television and Universal Television Alternative Studio — said the big-ticket ‘golden handcuffs’ deals of the past half-decade would become less commonplace and fewer creatives would be able to demand top dollar for their services in the future.
“I don’t know if the arms race that we were in for the last five years is still in effect,” she told journalists at on-record lunch in London yesterday. “I don’t think the agents are very happy at all. There will still be some people who command big dollars but they are proven entities with track records.”
She predicted the days of agents calling the shots and pushing up prices were numbered, as streamers and...

Series Mania Delivers Optimism
Full of positivity: Series Mania is winding down today (although the prestigious International Competition winner is still to be announced) and it’s been a week full of optimism. European creatives and industry execs were out in droves for the first major festival that was almost entirely restriction-less. There was the odd teething problem (seeking press badges was akin to a joyless treasure hunt and patchy wi-fi was a constant talking point) but gone are the days of tests and masks and the delegates were loving it, with several well attended parties taking place when the sun went down.
Keeping it “local”: The message to take away from the forum sessions was loud and clear. The streamers and studios are in Europe and they want content,...

As competition for the best European talent ramps up, bosses at some of the continent’s biggest production houses are finding U.S. agents tricky to deal with.
According to Christian Vesper, The Hand of God producer Fremantle’s President of Global Drama, agents are chasing too high a price for their clients which fails to “support that nation’s production model,” while Marina Williams, the Co-Founding Partner of Asacha Media Group, said “the price isn’t always acceptable” on these deals and they tend to be more complex than those traditionally struck in Europe.
“We are running into this a lot and you have to argue constantly,” added Vesper.
Local European agents are also grappling with the challenge of landing the biggest streamer shows for their clients and keeping these clients away from the big Hollywood agents as competition grows, according to Federation Entertainment Co-Founder Lionel Uzan.

Universal International Studios has struck a first-look deal with “Call My Agent!” and “Parallèles” writer Quoc Dang Tran as it continues a charm offensive directed at international creators.
Uis has inked a first-look deal with the French-Vietnamese writer and showrunner who will develop and produce English and French-language television projects with the studio for the global market. French-language series will be co-produced with the “Marianne” writer’s recently formed label, Daïmôn Films.
“He really leads from themes that speak to his heart versus responding to the industry, so we’re excited to do business with a creator who listens to their gut instead of just what the network is mandating,” Beatrice Springborn, president of Universal International Studios, tells Variety ahead of a keynote at French TV festival Series Mania.

Exclusive: The streaming revolution has finally gifted European creatives the opportunity to write sci-fi and other genres, according to Quoc Dang Tran, the creator of Disney+’s first French-language drama Parallèles.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline on the eve of the teen drama’s launch, Netflix’s Marianne creator said he came up with the idea more than a decade ago but there had been “no outlet for sci-fi” and other genres in non-English-language territories.
“Writers like me felt that we had the ability to tell these stories but weren’t allowed to do so,” he said. “For a while if it was fiction it had to be British or American. Some gave up the dream and others persisted.”
Reflecting on the current state of play, Dang Tran credited the streamers with “creating an electric shock” in the content market.
Disney+ alone is creating around one-third of its 60 planned non-u.S.
