Exclusive: Here is Elisabeth Moss as you’ve never seen her, looking and acting more like Hole-era Courtney Love than Mad Men-period Peggy Olson. In this first look at director Alex Ross Perry’s Her Smell, Moss plays a kohl-eyed punk rocker (who seems to be having a very public backstage meltdown). The film has its world premiere Sunday in the Platform section of the Toronto Film Festival.
Endeavor Content is handling U.S. sales, and Voltage Pictures international, on the ground in Toronto.
There’s already some awards buzz for Moss around this one, and the change-of-pace turn showcased in the clip suggests why. She plays Becky Something, described by the Her Smell team as “a talented but self-destructive musician who seems determined to alienate everyone around her — even at the cost of her band’s success. The brilliant and brash front woman for the ’90s rock band Something She,...

Alex Ross Perry is an independent-film conundrum. The 32-year-old writer-director received very strong reviews for his 2015 dramatic thriller “Queen of Earth” and 2014 Sundance Film Festival entry “Listen Up Philip,” but both films were box office flops, taking in around $90,000 and $200,000, respectively.

The ensemble cast is comprised of Jason Schwartzman, Chloë Sevigny, Mary-Louise Parker, Lily Rabe and former Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz.
The prospect of three commercial duds in a row could give any filmmaker a panic attack, but Perry has a sense of humor about his lack of box office prowess.

It has been a remarkable, four-star review type of year for Alex Ross Perry, and 2014 ain’t over yet with the the Indie Spirits Awards nominations just around the corner. In the same boat/time-frame as Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, Listen Up Philip was delivered in a thirty minutes or your pizza is free mad dash. The filmmaker didn’t waste much time between projects sending Queen of Earth into orbit mid summer, and nor did he spend much time making new friends as his regular contributors on the tech side in Composer Keegan DeWitt, Cinematographer Sean Price Williams, Editor Robert Greene and Perry muses Elisabeth Moss, Keith Poulson and Kate Lyn Sheil were joined by Ross film newbies Patrick Fugit, Katherine Waterston and stop making indie films hero Kentucker Audley. Good news: this is inspired by classic Roman Polanski films.
