We asked the producer of ITV’s You’ve Been Framed! about staged clips, smartphones, and why the £250 hasn’t gone up with inflation…
Home video clip show You've Been Framed! is an ITV Saturday teatime stalwart. It first arrived in 1990 and is now in the enviable position of airing its 29th series. Its current incarnation, presented by Harry Hill since 2004, hit preciselythe sweet spot between comic absurdity and human suffering.
It's the show, as producer Chris Thornton says, "everybody watches but nobody admits to watching. We've gone into more detail on the joys it provides, here.
Over email, we caught up with Thornton to find out the secret to the show's longevity, how the advent of smartphones has affected submissions, and why that £250 fee hasn't changed since day one...
The £250 fee has remained the same since You’ve Been Framed! began in 1990. Have there been discussions...

Mark Ruffalo can be forgiven for trying to help out an old acting school friend by directing him in his script, the morality tale Sympathy for Delicious. But this is one of those cases where what's fun and challenging and feels good to the folks making the movie doesn't necessarily work for the audience. Ruffalo, who recovered from a brain tumor in 2002, is fine as a conflicted Catholic priest who is trying to help the homeless by exploiting a wheelchair-bound DJ who discovers healing powers (actor-writer-producer Chris Thornton). Orlando Bloom and Juliette Lewis play skanky rock musicians, and Ruffalo's You Can Count On Me co-star Laura Linney is a smarmy manager. Everyone is exploiting everyone, in other words. But it takes the entire movie ...

While The Black List may be getting most of the press from entertainment news circles when it's announced in December, there's another compilation of the best new ideas and writing being offered to Hollywood movie studios and producers. It's called The Hit List (Thl), and it differs from The Black List in one fundamental way: whereas The Black List (Tbl) is a list of the top unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, several of the screenplays on that list have been purchased or are in development.
Take a look at last year's Black List (Part 1 is here, Part 2 is here) and here we are, one year later, and several of the scripts that made the 2009 list will be coming out in 2011 -- or have already been released (like The Social Network or Due Date). The Hit List is different in that it seeks to give attention to spec screenplays -- that is,...

It received its world premiere back in Sundance, has a strong cast in Mark Ruffalo, Juliette Lewis, Orlando Bloom and Laura Linney and it received a Special Jury Prize for Directing for first time actor turned director - yet it took 10 months for Sympathy for Delicious to find a distributor. To be released next spring, the indie film has found an unlikely home with Maya Entertainment. Gist: Written by Chris Thornton (who plays the lead, wrote the script and produced), this sees "Delicious" Dean O'Dwyer, a paralyzed DJ struggling to survive in his wheelchair on the streets of L.A. He turns to faith-healing and mysteriously acquires the ability to cure the sick -- although not himself. Ruffalo plays a Jesuit priest who tries to help him come to terms with the limits of his gift, and Bloom a rock singer in a band that exploits the suddenly famous healer.

For well over a year, actor Mark Ruffalo has been on what he calls "a rollercoaster ride." After surviving a brain tumor in 2002, Ruffalo had spent much of the decade prepping his directorial debut, “Sympathy for Delicious,” a comedic drama about a paraplegic DJ-turned-faith healer, when his brother Scott was killed during its preproduction.
Ruffalo forged ahead to honor his brother's memory and real-life paraplegic friend -- Christopher Thornton, who wrote and stars in the film -- until the production ran out of money last summer. He took a few weeks to co-star in Lisa Cholodenko's moving comedy "The Kids Are All Right," then spent the hiatus with his wife and three children, even contemplating a break from acting. Then in December, Sundance saved the day by giving "Sympathy" a prime opening weekend slot in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. Audiences responded with hefty applause, and after some mixed...

Ruffalo's film school consists of working under Michael Mann, Spike Jonze, Martin Scorsese, David Fincher and Ang Lee, so when a passion project between him and good friend Thornton finally comes to fruition, one has to wonder whether the prior work can help mold the actor as a helmer. The project certainly doesn't feel cookie-cutter, so could this be a feel good film in spandex, metalhead clothing? - #83. There you go -- those pictures above are two shots of Orlando Bloom playing a "tough as nails" rocker in Mark Ruffalo and Chris Thornton's Sympathy for Delicious. (Go to Just Jared to see them in their entirety.)
I'm sorry, but the guy better be biting the heads off of small animals onstage (or something else equally disturbing and heinous) if we're supposed to believe that he's super tough. A rock star? Sure. A rocky, pop sensation? Sure. Tough. As. Nails. Nah. Maybe as tough as one of those plastic drywall anchor things -- definitely not nail strength.
A few tats and eye makeup is a far cry from true rockerdom. I've seen rocker transformations. I used to know a guy who morphed from Internet geek to savage, head-banging rocker. But Orlando? His look needs more work.
Then again, Bloom fans seemed to like the idea the first time around.

Don't worry, this isn't about some lust-filled obsession with pirates and Abigail Adams. You might remember that back in August, word hit that Mark Ruffalo was gearing up for his directorial debut, Sympathy for Delicious. At the time, Ruffalo and screenwriter Chris Thornton were set to star alongside James Franco. However, after the loss of Ruffalo's brother last month, the project was put on hold.
But now Delicious is back on, Franco is out, and The Hollywood Reporter posts that Orlando Bloom (Franco's replacement) and Laura Linney are in. The film focuses on a paralyzed DJ (Thornton) trying to survive on the streets of Los Angeles when he develops the ability to cure the sick -- but only other people, not himself. He starts to cash in on his new talents, and finds himself between a Jesuit priest (Ruffalo) who tries to help him, and the lead of a "tough...
