- Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1974.

- Awarded the 1933 James E. Sullivan Memorial as the USA's outstanding amateur athlete.
- The legendary runner was also something of a medical miracle. As a small boy, his legs were severely burned in a freak schoolhouse fire that took the life of his adored older brother, Floyd. For more than a year, it was thought that he would never walk again, much less run. When, through sheer determination, he ultimately regained the strength in his legs, walking, and then running, seemed to almost come naturally.
