Austin, TX – The SXSW Conference and Festivals wrapped on March 19th, after 10 days of magic and Austin wackiness, showcasing film, TV, interactive, conferences, interviews and music. The Film & TV Fest named “Raging Grace” as the top Narrative Feature and “Grown” as top TV Pilot.
“Raging Grace” was written and directed by Paris Zarcilla, telling the story of a Filipina house cleaner and her young daughter, with the jury noting its “heady blend of horror, history, and midnight humor announcing the arrival of an exciting new filmmaking talent.” The TV Pilot “Grown” focuses on a teenage boy attempting to move forward after losing his father, and the jury said it was “a coming-of-age story told with heart and visually realized with polish and verve.”
The following is the list of top honorees …

Two days after ”Everything Everywhere All at Once“ won seven Oscars, including best picture, the SXSW Film Festival, where Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s movie launched last year, has announced its own awards. To be clear, “Eeaao” was a studio-backed opening night premiere (not one of the smaller movies launched in competition at the indie-focused fest), but you can still feel the excitement in Austin around the landmark Oscar win. After all, SXSW was the first festival to take Daniels seriously, awarding them top prize for their Battles music video (“My Machines”) in 2012.
Will any of the movies or directors screening here this year go on to change film history?
With five days still to go at SXSW, the juries convened to present the winners.

King Knight is certainly a one-of-a-kind movie with a unique storyline. Directed by Richard Bates Jr., the film stars Matthew Gray Gubler, Angela Sarafyan, Andy Milonakis, Kate Comer, Johnny Pemberton, and Josh Fadem. The movie tells the story of a high priest who confronts his more conventional past as he attempts to learn more about himself and his future. An eccentric take on self-reflection, the movie has been well-received by critics, with a review from Blu-ray.com writing: “Not the most ambitious feature, but the production achieves some good-natured hilarity with its limited budget, remaining strangely kind and cheery with this

Richard Bates Jr.’s King Knight has an approximation of many things: humor, story, idiosyncrasy, character depth and likeability, production design, dialogue, cinematography, the concepts of witchcraft and self-actualization, and a basic sense of stakes or danger. Its half-formed regard for narrative and form are the haphazard basis of the director’s fifth feature, a superficial take on a hero’s journey that comes off like an unfinished script—an almost-film.
In King Knight, Matthew Gray Gubler (whose visage fits naturally into that of a cult leader) stars as Thorn––the quirky, not-evil, bird bath-selling high priest of a modern-day witches’ coven made up in its entirety of characters played by comedy actors Andy Milonakis, Kate Comer, Nelson Franklin, Johnny Pemberton, and Josh Fadem. Thorn wants to start a family with his life partner Willow (Angela Sarafyan), who’s reluctant to cow to his whims. As their Pagan fertility ritual of Beltane commences,...

Ricky’s latest project is King Knight, which follows the high priest of a modern-day coven (played hilariously by Matthew Gray Gubler), who finds himself dealing with a bit of an existential crisis after he gets invited to attend his 20th high school reunion.
Also written by Bates Jr., King Knight features a brilliant ensemble featuring the likes of the aforementioned Gubler, as well as Angela Sarafayan, Barbara Crampton, Ray Wise, Andy Milonakis, Emily Change, Kate Comer, Nelson Franklin, Josh Fadem, Johnny Pemberton, and Swati Kapila.

We’re all good people, but we’re full of shit. Or, as the characters in King Knight say, we all have “poo in our butts”. We’re all imperfect human beings, some more malicious than others, and it’s the outsider who receives the brunt of that malice. Writer-director Richard Bates Jr. looks at the outsider with a dark sense of humor and with a farcical approach, creating one of the best comedies of the year. While looking at religion, conservatives, and society in general, King Knight aims to present Wicca in a positive light. It succeeds, leading to a journey of acceptance and rebirth.

In the Season 3 finale of “Room 104,” the motel room that has housed three dozen different self-contained stories does something it certainly hasn’t done before: It sprouts into a rainforest.
Even if you haven’t seen the episode yet, “Room 104” executive producer Sydney Fleischmann is Ok with you still knowing about it.
“Our initial reaction with a lot of things is, ‘Oh my God, that’s a spoiler! That’s gonna give away everything!’ And then we sort of talk ourselves down and remember no one has any sense of anything that happens in the room. It’s all going to be fresh and weird and new,” Fleischmann told IndieWire. “And so showing the room as a jungle is not, it’s not a spoiler, it’s really alluring and it’s weird. I think the fun part is that it’s much more than ‘the room is filled with green.

The cast and creative team behind the Showtime series “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” discussed the impact that multi-level marketing schemes during a panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Friday.
Set in a small Orlando-adjacent town in 1992, the series follows Krystal Stubbs (Dunst), a minimum-wage water park employee who lies, schemes and cons her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise (Fam) — the cultish, flag-waving, multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that drove her to ruin in the first place, run by the powerful Obie Garbeau II (Ted Levine).
“These kinds of schemes are all about people being asked to monetize their relationships,” showrunner Esta Spalding said. “What’s heartbreaking is not only the debt and the loss…The losses become familial as well.”
“Everyone on this show wants something more in their life but there is no way they could do that making minimum wage in 1992,” she continued.

Kirsten Dunst blinds an all-seeing pyramid in a new trailer for On Becoming a God in Central Florida.
Pyramid schemes didn't start with the Illuminati and didn't end with Amway. Showtime's new series, On Becoming A God in Central Florida, shows the cult of free enterprise is alive and thriving in the southeast land of the mouse. Kirsten Dunst stars as a water park worker who floats to the top in the 10-episode comedy.
Set in 1992, Dunst's character, Krystal Stubbs, lives in the Orlando area. Struggling to make ends meet as a minimum wage worker at a rundown water park, she drinks the kool-aid of multilevel marketing scams. She gets duped by Founders American Enterprise (Fam), a cult-like company which has already brainwashed most of her community with their promises of an “A-list, six-star, jet-set lifestyle," and decides to beat them at their own game.
The pilot was directed by Charlie McDowell.

Showtime has picked up On Becoming A God in Central Florida, a one-hour dark comedy series starring Kirsten Dunst. The project, from George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures and Sony’s TriStar Television, was ordered to series last year by YouTube to debut this year.
Sony TV started conversations about moving the show elsewhere earlier this year, following the Google-owned company’s programming shift that involves making all original series, originally earmarked for Svod platform YouTube Red/Premium, available as Avod offerings, as well as putting a pin in all new scripted development. According to sources, YouTube and Sony TV were not able to negotiate an Avod deal for On Becoming a God in Central Florida. YouTube Originals’ brass, who are said to be proud of the show, then worked closely with Sony TV to find a new home for it. Sony TV also has hit Cobra Kai at YouTube,...

Superhero movies/TV shows always focus on the ones with the powers, but what about those other, lowly people? The ones trying to get through their nine-to-five shift without their building collapsing onto them? That’s the basis, in part, for NBC’s DC Comics comedy Powerless, a workplace sitcom with an added superpowered twist, which is set to premiere early next month. To announce its not-so-supersized debut, the peacock station released the show’s first official trailer this week, and you can check it out up above.
Starring Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Danny Pudi (Community), Christina Kirk (A to Z), Ron Funches (Undatable), Kate Miccuci (Don’t Think Twice) and Josh Fadem (30 Rock), Powerless follows the employees of Wayne Security, a subsidiary of Wayne Enterprises, that specializes in products for the defenseless, Aka the powerless, to make them feel safer.

The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.

A friend of mine and I were deciding what we wanted to do Halloween night and came to the conclusion we wanted to see a movie. I checked times on the local theater’s website and noticed a movie called “Freaks of Nature.”
The blurb describing the movie said it involved zombies, vampires, and humans co-existing in the town of Dillford, until aliens show up and, essentially, wreck everything. As soon as I read this blurb out loud, my friend’s face lit up, he grinned, and said “We have to go to that one.”
So, we did. We had no expectations. The only name we recognized in the miniscule summary was Joan Cusack, and they didn’t even bother to mention what her role would be. The poster looks like it could have come from any teen-centric horror movie from the very late seventies to the mid-eighties, easily. It...

In order for humans to team up with zombies and vampires, you know the circumstances must be dire. In Sony’s upcoming horror comedy, Kitchen Sink, an alien invasion forces the living to team up with fanged fiends and the shambling dead in order to save their town, though viewers will have to wait longer to see this unlikely bond, as Sony has delayed the release of Kitchen Sink by nearly eight months.
Exhibitor Relations reports that Sony has moved the release of Kitchen Sink from its January 9th, 2015 slot to September 4th. The monster mash-up movie has been described as having a vibe akin to The Breakfast Club, but we’ll have to wait for a trailer and more synopsis details to see what ghoulish goods could be in store. Gardner (Joseph Mazzello, Jurassic Park) is a socially awkward, 25-year-old mail carrier in the indie romantic comedy Dear Sidewalk. He keeps to a usual routine which includes a postal route walking through Austin neighborhoods, a daily chat with sarcastic retiree Trudy (Lana Dieterich) and weekly meetings with his small philatelic club. This stamp-collecting group is made up of his postal service co-workers (Davi Jay, Hugo Perez and C. K. McFarland) who encourage him to get out more. Meanwhile, he sleeps in a boat in front of his best pal Calvin's (Josh Fadem, 30 Rock) house.
Then fortysomething divorcee Paige (Michelle Forbes, True Blood) moves into a house on his route and disrupts his daily pattern. She flirts with him and takes him to the Cathedral of Junk. She throws his watch in Town Lake (or Lady Bird Lake, if you prefer). What does this mean for Gardner?

Nicholas Braun, Mackenzie Davis, and Josh Fadem take the lead alongside Chris Zylka and Denis Leary, with Vanessa Hudgens close to joining the cast in a key role.
If all goes well, Westwick is to play a smooth-talking vampire that wants to make Mackenzie Davis’ character his latest bloody conquest.
