A pair of golden performances elevates the standard entertainment biopic in “George & Tammy,” a six-part limited series airing on Showtime.
The story behind George & Tammy plays out like a real-life “Star Is Born:” king of his respective entertainment genre takes a young upstart under his wing and falls in love with her – but his substance abuse issues only get worse when her star starts to eclipse his. Of course, the real-life romance of king of country music George Jones (played by Michael Shannon) and his queen Tammy Wynette (played by Jessica Chastain) takes some extensive detours. But at this point in the music biopic era, we’ve already seen a multitude of missed gigs, dressing room arguments, and bottles hurled against a wall, preferably smashing a mirror (although Jones driving drunk on a riding mower is the stuff of alcoholic legend).

"We just gotta hold on…" "That's right." Showtime has debuted an official trailer for a new mini-series titled George & Tammy, arriving for streaming this December. All the episodes are directed by filmmaker John Hillcoat, the latest movie director to move into TV. It's based on the book "The Three of Us: Growing Up with Tammy and George" by Georgette Jones, telling the true story of these two musicians. The series is a look at the "complicated-but-enduring relationship" between famed country musicians George Jones and Tammy Wynette, as played by the very talented actors Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain. The long and winding journey to get "George & Tammy" to the small screen has undergone one final detour before the premiere date for the limited series. Originally conceived as a feature film for Fox Searchlight years back, which is when actor Jessica Chastain first became attached to the project, the dramatization of famous country music singers George Jones and Tammy Wynette eventually landed as a Spectrum Original that would eventually air on the Paramount+ streaming service. That release plan has changed once again, however, as Variety reports that "George & Tammy" will now move to Showtime.

The rest of the six-episode drama will then air exclusively on Showtime every Sunday. But that's not all. New episodes will also be made available to stream...

Country music drama limited series George & Tammy, starring Oscar winner Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals), is headed to Showtime.
The series, from MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, was caught in the fallout from Charter shutting down its Spectrum Originals unit. George & Tammy, a co-production between Spectrum Originals and Paramount Network, was among the orphaned series.
The series was to premiere on Spectrum as one of its original series and, after a nine-month exclusive run, get a second window on the Paramount Network and Paramount+.
The move to Showtime comes weeks after Chris McCarthy took oversight of the premium network following the exit of Showtime’s longtime chief David Nevins. Orchestrated by McCarthy, who also oversees MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Network, the decision signals a possible emphasis on shows with A-list talent at Showtime going forward.

Jessica Chastain is standing by Michael Shannon.
The Academy Award winner stars as “Stand By Your Man” singer Tammy Wynette, alongside two-time Oscar nominee Shannon as Wynette’s fellow musician, husband George Jones. The musical biopic “George & Tammy” premieres on Paramount later this year.
“It was fascinating to me that someone like Tammy Wynette, who sang all these songs like ‘Stand by Your Man,’ also was married five times,” Chastain told Vanity Fair. “I was excited about this woman who was married and divorced multiple times and struggling in Nashville and really made a name for herself on her own. She charted multiple times before she met George Jones.”
Wynette and Jones wed in 1969, marking each of their respective third marriages. The duo later divorced but stayed friends until Wynette’s death in 1998 at age 55.

Jessica Chastain flexed her singing chops and tightened her belt — literally — to play late country singer Tammy Wynette.
The Academy Award winner stars opposite Michael Shannon in the Paramount limited series “George & Tammy” based on the tumultuous love story between music duo Wynette and George Jones. Abe Sylvia created the series. Lead star Chastain worked with vocal coach Ron Browning for months to sing like Wynette, calling a live performance in front of hundreds of extras “the scariest thing I’ve ever done.”
Yet Chastain took the physical preparation to play Wynette into her own hands when tracking Wynette’s later-in-life health issues and painkiller addiction.
“I don’t really like to look at scales, but I stopped eating,” Chastain said to Vanity Fair. “I was drinking juices and I kept doing it until I looked sick.”
Wynette died in 1998 at age 55.

The NBC limited series The Thing About Pam, starring Renée Zellweger, concluded its run on Tuesday, April 13, but has clearly made its mark for the network as its top-rated new series of the 2021-2022 season.
The show centers on the 2011 murder of State Farm employee Betsy Faria, which resulted in her husband Russ’s conviction, although he insisted he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated. This brutal crime set off a chain of events that would expose a diabolical scheme deeply involving Pam Hupp (Zellweger).
The series premiered in March and its opening episode performed decently with a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.79 million viewers. Since then, the episode jumped up to a 4.24 in the demo and tallied 14 million viewers – a 5x audience increase – across live, delayed and digital viewing, according to the network. The company also said that the pilot marked NBC’s best digital launch ever.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli’s score for The Thing About Pam, which is set for release via Milan Records on April 15, following the airing of the NBC true-crime ratings hit’s finale.
The Blumhouse Television-produced limited series centers on the 2011 murder of State Farm employee Betsy Faria (Katy Mixon), which resulted in her husband Russ’s (Glenn Fleshler) conviction, although he insisted he didn’t kill her and was later exonerated. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Thing About Pam series finale, “She’s A Killer.”] Whether or not you enjoyed NBC’s six-part dramatized take on Pam Hupp, Renée Zellweger’s performance in The Thing About Pam has to stand out. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if she ended up with an Emmy nomination as a result. The series offered a look at the murder of Betsy Faria (Katy Mixon in the series), for which Betty’s husband Russ (Glenn Fleshler) was convicted, despite his claims of innocence. He was later exonerated. The crime led to a chain of events that ultimately ended with Pam (Zellweger) in prison — and in showrunner Jenny Klein’s take, a meta conclusion that saw her watching the series. It’s a story that became popular after several episodes of Dateline NBC were dedicated to it, as well as a 2019 podcast. Real footage of Pam played over the closing credits,...

The CBS teen-parenting comedy pilot Unplanned in Akron has added four new cast members, including Eastbound & Down star Katy Mixon. Mixon is joined by Mr. Iglesias actor Cree Cicchino, Outmatched star Connor Kalopsis, and Ugly Betty alum Christopher Gorham, for the series, which follows two teenagers navigating parenthood. Described as sharp-witted, outspoken, and unfiltered, Brianna is mature beyond her years, having played “mom” to four younger siblings. Now she has an 8-month-old of her own to take care of. Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction, and in the case of unsuspecting convicted murderer Pam Hupp, the “truth” is just a web of fictions to begin with.
The twisted tale of two best friends in Troy, Missouri — that ended in the ultimate backstabbing for insurance money — is at the heart of NBC’s new limited series “The Thing About Pam,” premiering March 8. Two-time Oscar winner Renée Zellweger made headlines for her head-turning transformation into Hupp thanks to layers of prosthetics, and the star-studded ensemble cast including Judy Greer, Josh Duhamel, Katy Mixon, and Glenn Fleshler round out the very “Fargo”-esque series.
And all that quirky fourth-wall breaking is an intentional nod towards the Coen Brothers, showrunner Jenny Klein explained to the audience during a special advance screening and Q&a with fellow executive producer Zellweger Monday night in NYC, moderated by Happy Sad Confused podcast host Josh Horowitz.

When it comes to Pam Hupp — the small-town Missouri resident currently serving a life sentence for first-degree murder — no one thing defines her. And no one knows that better than the people at NBC. Just a periphery character in the 2014 “Dateline” report titled, “The House on Sumac Drive,” Hupp’s presence steadily grew as NBC News continued to investigate the death of Betsy Faria, resulting in four follow-up episodes over the next five years. The final entry, also titled “The Thing About Pam,” teed up “Dateline’s” first podcast, which is now the basis for NBC’s scripted limited series of the same name.
One could argue audiences can’t get enough of Hupp’s twisted tale — or, just as easily, that Jack Donaghy’s lessons in synergy have not been forgotten at the Peacock. Either way, the quantity of stories derived from one woman’s horrific actions necessitate varied takes on her motivation,...

It’s hard, at first, to see what drew Renée Zellweger to the lead role of “The Thing About Pam.”
Zellweger, in an attempt to resemble the real-life convicted murderer Pam Hupp, forces herself to act through a shroud of body prosthetics. The show’s writers have stripped away subtext, dimming Zellweger’s sparky comic timing. It’s only in the series’ third episode that a tie to Zellweger’s past work becomes clear: Rising to take the stand as a witness in a murder trial, Pam sees her name in lights. In the criminal-justice system, she’s found her own kind of stardom.
“Chicago” this isn’t — that movie allowed Zellweger to be as shrewd and sharp as her character was callous and oblivious. But “Pam,” a limited series based on Hupp’s true story, has this much in common with Zellweger’s famous musical role: It attempts to...

Makeup artist Arjen Tuiten’s transformation of Renée Zellweger for NBC’s “The Thing About Pam,” premiering March 8, has been the talk of the internet. Zellweger plays Pam Hupp in the new crime drama, based on the true story of a Missouri woman who is eventually jailed for the murder of her friend. Zellweger donned a padded suit for the role. At TCA last month, the actor mentioned she had opted not to gain weight for the part — as she had for “Bridget Jones’s Diary” — since it had negatively impacted her health. While she had used prosthetics in films before, this was the first time she wore a full suit.
The show raised an outcry for not casting an actor with the same body type as Pam, but Blumhouse Television’s Chris McCumber explained the producers’ reasoning: “In this era of peak TV, having an artist of Renée’s caliber is an incredible advantage.
