Wellington, January 27: Research has revealed that mixing artificially sweetened beverages with alcohol results in higher breathalyzer readings.
An Australian research teams studying the metabolism of soft drinks found that artificially sweetened drinks provide an average breath alcohol concentration of 0.065 per cent compared to 0.045 per cent for conventionally sugary carbohydrate-laden drinks, just below the legal driving limit of 0.05 per cent, Stuff.co.nz reported.
Chris Irwin, PhD candidate at Griffith University said that choosing drinks that have diet mixers might put people over the permissible limit, but having a carbohydrate based drink with alcohol could keep them under the limit.
The study also found.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the longlist of songs for its Best Original Song Oscar in 2014, ahead of the nominations for the shortlist on January 14.
The list features 75 songs written for movies over the last year, with artists including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, U2, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and M83 all making the grade. Pharrell is included for his hit Happy, currently in the top 5 of the UK charts, which appears in Despicable Me 2, and other animated films make up a large proportion of those selected: Epic, Turbo, The Croods, Planes, Escape From Planet Earth and Monsters University all also get a mention.

One hundred fourteen scores from eligible feature-length motion pictures released in 2013 will be vying for nominations in the Original Score category for the 86th Oscars®, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today.
A Reminder List of works submitted in the Original Score category will be made available with a nominations ballot to all members of the Music Branch, who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.
Nomination voting in all Oscar categories begins Friday, December 27 and ends Wednesday, January 8.
The eligible scores along with their composers are listed below, in alphabetical order by film title:

Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible.”
