It was galling -- outrageous, even! -- for Trekkies to learn that J.J. Abrams was not one of them.
Abrams, coming off successful TV shows like "Lost" and his first feature film "Mission: Impossible III," was the director selected by Paramount to helm the brand-new reboot of "Star Trek." At the time, the franchise had fizzled out, and it was crying out for something exciting to get the audience's attention again. Trekkies at the time would have loved something insular and nerdy, like, say, a three-hour epic based on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." For legal reasons, Paramount had other ideas.
You see, Paramount and CBS, both previously owned by Viacom, had recently undergone a split, forcing the "Star Trek" movie rights into one camp and "Star Trek" TV rights into the other. Any "Trek" movies put into production would have to be legally different from any of the TV shows.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Nearly a decade after the last Dtv entry, The Amityville Horror finally returned to theaters. This was thanks, in large part, to the success of Platinum Dunes’ 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which kicked off a wave of horror remakes..
TCM 2003 set the precedent for the look and tone of many of the aughts remakes. This is clearly visible from the opening murder montage of director Andrew Douglas’ film: staccato editing of grainy archival footage set to an industrial score. This isn’t your mother’s true crime story; this is amped up, gritty, and slightly desaturated-looking. It’s MTV music video chic by way of Se7en.

It was weird from the start.
Sometime in 2008, trailers for J.J. Abrams' upcoming film "Star Trek" began to appearing theaters. This new film, the previews announced this quite clearly, was going to be quite different from the "Star Trek" of yore. This was going to be "Star Trek" -- to employ a dated slang term -- on steroids. Audiences witnessed a young blonde kid in a red convertible Chevy Corvette blasting down a country road, a motorcycle cop on his tail. He charges toward a cliff with no sign of stopping. He dives out just before the car barrels into the chasm below. He is covered with dirt and defiance. When the cop asks him his name, he says he's James Tiberius Kirk.
It was weird enough seeing a car in the preview -- vintage Chevys were still plentiful enough to go joyriding in by the 23nd century? -- but it became weirder when,...

Stars: Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabella Fuhrman, Cch Pounder, Jimmy Bennett, Margo Martindale, Karel Roden, Aryana Engineer, Rosemary Dunsmore, Genelle Williams | Written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick | Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra
Devastated by the loss of their unborn baby, Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard) decide to adopt a child. At the orphanage, both feel drawn to a little girl (Isabelle Fuhrman) named Esther, and soon the couple take their new daughter home. But when a dangerous series of events unfolds, Kate begins to suspect that there is something evil lurking behind the child’s angelic exterior.
Although the horror genre is by far my favorite film genre nowadays, the same thing cannot be said for when I was young. As a matter of fact, I was scared to death of practically every horror movie. I remember still to this day, seeing some sort of Chucky parody on some...

A new unauthorized biography of Anthony Bourdain, which includes for the first time the celebrity chef’s text messages from the days leading up to his death by suicide in 2018, reveals Bourdain’s anguish over his career, his estranged marriage and his troubled romantic relationship with actor Asia Argento.
Selections from the book Down and Out in Paradise: The Life of Anthony Bourdain, written by journalist Charles Leerhsen, were published in today’s The New York Times. The Simon & Schuster book will be released on Oct. 11.
“I hate my fans, too. I hate being famous. I hate my job,” Bourdain wrote to his estranged wife Ottavia Busia-Bourdain, with whom he remained a close confidant even after their separation in 2016. “I am lonely and living in constant uncertainty.”
Although the article doesn’t specifically say that Busia-Bourdain provided the texts, Bourdain’s widow controls his estate, which includes the messages.

The small but effective subgenre of “adoption horror” has a certain formula it follows. The newly adopted gradually dismantles the family unit, whether that means manipulating the systems around them or simply taking matters into their own little hands. Then, once someone gets wise to the evildoing, they either stop the young threat or they die trying. As entertaining as these kinds of movies are, they tread a well-worn path. Orphan upholds many of the same conventions as its ilk, however this 2009 movie also brings something new and exciting to the kids’ table.

From a cramped hotel suite in a luxury Cannes hotel, a pair of film executives are trying to pull off an unlikely feat: Sell distribution rights to Kevin Spacey’s comeback film. On May 17, Vantage Media International, or Vmi, a Hollywood-based company that sells movies primarily to foreign markets, screened a finished print of the noir drama Peter Five Eight to would-be buyers willing to take a gamble on the two-time Oscar winner’s first leading role since his career came to a grinding halt in 2017 amid accusations of sexual misconduct.

The people who run one of the nation’s best-known broadcast networks think they’ve come up with a way to slow the flow of ad dollars from traditional TV to streaming-video rivals.
CBS plans sometime in the second half of 2021 to start making available new technology that will let advertisers buy commercials that are sent only to a particular subset of the network’s viewing audience. These so-called “addressable” ads can be coded in such a way that they reach only consumers believed to be interested in buying a truck; executives who make decisions about business software; or families expecting their first child.
Advertisers running an ad campaign on CBS can “give it a protein shot,” says John Halley, chief operating officer of advertising revenue at ViacomCBS, by using the new technology.
Addressable ads have been around for some time, but largely available only to marketers who buy commercials via digital or cable.

Italian filmmaker and actress Asia Argento has accused “The Fast and the Furious” and “xXx” director Rob Cohen of sexual assault. Argento confirmed to Variety allegations she made over the weekend during an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera, as well as other outlets in Italy.
“It’s the first time I’m talking about Cohen,” she said. “He abused me, making me drink Ghb, he had a bottle of it.” Ghb is a depressant used in incidents of date rape. “At the time, I really didn’t know what it was. I woke up in the morning naked in his bed,” Argento said. According to the star, the incident occurred in 2002 while filming “xXx” opposite Vin Diesel and Samuel L. Jackson.

Actress Asia Argento has accused filmmaker Rob Cohen of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2002 during the filming of the Vin Diesel action movie “xXx.” Argento revealed the new accusations during an interview with Italian media while promoting her autobiography “Anatomy of a Wild Heart,” which comes out this week and covers the accusations.
“It’s the first time I’m talking about Cohen,” Argento told Milan newspaper Il Corriere della Sera. “He abused me, making me drink Ghb, he had a bottle of it,” she said.
Ghb is a fast-acting anesthetic that has become known as a regularly used date rape drug. Argento said that after unknowingly taking the drug, she woke up naked in Cohen’s bed, unsure of what had happened to her.
“I discovered later, speaking with a friend who opened my eyes about that substance,” she said.

Big advertisers have created an army of animated product ambassadors over the decades to help sell web services, insurance and suntan lotion. Toucan Sam, Tony the Tiger and Mr. Clean were always good soldiers who could be counted upon to tout the virtues of breakfast cereal or cleaning fluid in 30 seconds or less.
Two new brand operatives, however, act more like employees gone rogue.

Since the #MeToo movement began sweeping across the entertainment industry nearly two years ago, few corners of the film world have made as many significant strides in gender equity in film as the festival circuit.
As Hollywood studios move at a pace slower than melting glaciers to hire female filmmakers, curators and organizers have stepped in to give women a platform to screen their movies, find mentors, network with industry insiders, compete for prizes or distribution and so on. Major players like Sundance, Berlin and next week’s Toronto International Film Festival have pushed their programming toward gender parity in percentages never seen at the studio level.
That’s not the case for the Venice Film Festival, whose organizers seem to have washed their hands of the equality agreement they signed just last year. That was when Jennifer Kent was the only woman in the main competition with her film,...

“X-Factor Italy” has found a new fourth judge after giving Asia Argento the axe back in August.

Argento was fired from the singing competition after she was accused of having sexually abused a former child actor who once played her son in a movie. Asia Argento has seemingly taken her feud with Rose McGowan to a painful new level.
The Italian actress, 43, added a new tattoo to her collection with her new piece of ink depicting a dagger with a single drop of red blood dripping from it.
Posting a photo of her tattoo on Instagram Stories, Argento seemingly sent a message to McGowan, 45, tagging her former friend in the posting and writing, “Bye bye @rosemcgowan @marcomanzotattoo.”
Argento has been estranged from her one-time pal since McGowan sided with 22-year-old actor Jimmy Bennett who accused Argento of sexually assaulting him when he was 17. Argento has denied the allegation.

“DailyMail TV” has released the second part of Asia Argento’s on-camera interview, her first since news broke in August that she settled a sexual assault case. After discussing the loss of Anthony Bourdain in the first half of the interview, Argento turned her attention toward Rose McGowan, Jimmy Bennett, and the allegation of sexual assault made against her. Argento has been accused by former actor Bennett. The two appeared together in the 2004 film “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things.”
The initial report from The New York Times said Bennett accused Argento of assaulting him in 2013 at a California hotel. Bennett was 17 years old at the time of the incident, while Argento was 37. The age of consent in California is 18 years old. Shortly after, Rose McGowan released a personal statement verifying the contents of leaked text messages between Argento and McGowan’s partner, Rain Dove, that many interpreted as further evidence against Argento.
The initial report from The New York Times said Bennett accused Argento of assaulting him in 2013 at a California hotel. Bennett was 17 years old at the time of the incident, while Argento was 37. With the rage of victims of sexual assault who have been silenced for too long erupting, the current cultural landscape sometimes feels like an epic battle of the sexes: Like women are fed up with the abuses of men, and not going to take it anymore; like they’re climbing the walls of the patriarchy, ready to tear it down brick by brick. It’s exhilarating, it’s inspiring, it’s healing. But it’s also not that simple.

By any reasonable expectation, the casting of Kristen Stewart in the role of Savannah Knoop, the young woman who impersonated the fictional literary sensation Jt LeRoy, which was created by her brother’s unstable girlfriend Laura Albert (Laura Dern), should have been enough of a coup. Stewart’s own prickly relationship with celebrity, her androgynous beauty and embrace of queer identity, would by itself have added more than enough layers of metatextual intrigue to the story of a bisexual woman who pretended to be a bisexual man who was entirely the creation of another woman.
But the timing of Justin Kelly’s film about a literary hoax that exposed the hypocrisy surrounding the idea of authenticity in the publishing world has repercussions that far outstrip the original plan. Uncomfortably thrust into close proximity to the allegations of sexual abuse leveled against #MeToo pioneer Asia Argento, as enjoyable as the film...

Justin Kelly’s “Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy,” the closing-night film at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, occupies a difficult slot at the mammoth festival. The Jt Leroy saga is readymade for the movies, and two years ago it gave birth to Jeff Feuerzeig’s documentary “Author: The Jt Leroy Story.” That provided a fascinating overview of extensive scheme by Bay Area author Laura Albert, who wrote under the nom de plume of the fictional Leroy and gave him a backstory, hoodwinking fans all over the world by pretending that (s)he was a former teen prostitute with prodigal talent.
Albert pulled it off for years, pretending to be Leroy on the phone while sending her androgynous sister-in-law Savannah Knoop to play the character in public. An attorney for Jimmy Bennett said he is “disgusted” by the “misrepresentations and mischaracterizations” made by Asia Argento’s lawyer, who claimed the actress was the victim of sexual assault — not the young actor.
In a lengthy post Wednesday, Argento’s attorney disputed allegations that Argento had sexually assaulted the then-17-year-old actor in a 2013 hotel room encounter, claiming that Bennett had forced himself on the actress. Argento’s partner, Anthony Bourdain, quietly arranged to pay $380,000 to the accuser.
Bennett’s attorney, Gordono K. Sattro, responded with a statement calling these allegations “slanderous” and “offensive,” and designed to silence Argento’s accuser.
“Asia’s attacks on my client’s character have no bearing on the events that took place on May 9, 2013, and the statements in her most recent letter are seemingly crafted with the intent to intimidate, shame, and insult our client back into silence,” Sattro wrote. “This is a...
