This post contains spoilers for the finale of "Justified: City Primeval."
When "Justified: City Primeval" signed off last night, the limited series finale was expected to be the final word on Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant). After all, fans of the straight-shooting, contemplative modern cowboy got six seasons with the character, plus a surprise bonus in the form of the revival series -- an adaptation of an Elmore Leonard story that didn't originally feature Raylan. And isn't that enough? Wouldn't it be greedy for us to ask for more time in this stylish, thrilling world?
Not according to the show itself. In an exhilarating surprise epilogue, "Justified: City Primeval" ended with a fantastic cliffhanger, bringing crime kingpin (and Raylan's ex-friend) Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) back into the fray in typical over-the-top fashion and putting an immediate question mark on the end of Raylan's early retirement. The final scene,...

And so Justified says goodbye to one Boyd, and welcomes back another.
In the concluding chapter of the revival miniseries Justified: City Primeval, Timothy Olyphant’s Raylan Givens finally had his long-awaited showdown with the Oklahoma Wildman himself, Boyd Holbrook’s Clement Mansell. But in a sign of how much Raylan had changed since the original series, it was a showdown he did not want, and had put off for many episodes. And when Raylan does shoot Mansell,...

Justified: City Primeval Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens, Vivian Olyphant as Willa Givens. Cr: Chuck Hodes/FX Vivian Olyphant is the teenage daughter of Timothy Olyphant, a relationship that’s now reflected onscreen, as Vivian plays Timothy’s daughter in the new series Justified: City Primeval. Of course, it would be easy to believe that nepotism was involved, but Vivian told us that she had to audition for the role like anyone else. That being said, though, she told said she really loved getting an opportunity to work with her father. Actor and Deadwood star Timothy Olyphant spent six seasons honing his performance as Raylan Givens in the television series Justified. But the show’s revival saw a few new faces debuting in the limited series, including Olyphant’s daughter.
The actor recently confided, however, that working alongside his daughter resulted in a subtle change in his performance.

The limited series Justified: City Primeval showed Olyphant’s Raylan Givens in a different period in his life. The sequel takes place a decade after the original series ended, with Givens changing location from Kentucky to Miami.
The time lapse also allowed the show to explore Olyphant’s relationship with his characters’ daughter Willa Givens. In the original Justified, the daughter was usually played by a couple of child actors. With Primeval featuring a much older Willa,...

If FX’s Justified: City Primeval has left you champing at the bit to see grown-up Willa with her mom Winona, franchise vet Natalie Zea and TV daughter Vivian Olyphant just came through with a “first look” photo, taken on a SAG-AFTRA picket line.
Though Willa was last glimpsed on the original Justified as a wee tyke (in the April 2015 series finale), City Primeval some eight years later reintroduced Raylan and Winona’s kid as a full-on, towering 15-year-old (played by Timothy Olyphant’s real-life daughter).

Clement Manzel (Boyd Holbrook) is a wild man. That's not just my assessment; the villain of "Justified: City Primeval" actually saunters into the show this season with the nickname "The Oklahoma Wildman," a moniker that's just as chaotic as the big bad himself. Holbrook has done an incredible job so far injecting the man with a sense of unhinged danger and unearned confidence. He's a murderer who seems to get away with his crimes again and again through sheer force of will, threatening whoever stands in his way. Now, with a dead judge's little black book in his hands, he seems like he could be unstoppable.
But what does Manzel actually want? In the latest episode of the series, he and his girlfriend Sandy (Adelaide Clemens) -- who seems to be a pile of frayed nerves but is also sincerely into him,...

Raylan Givens wants to be a good dad. The neo-Western hero played by Timothy Olyphant spent much of the original run of "Justified" grappling with his own daddy issues, and while the revival series doesn't mention them outright, they still loom large over his relationship with his daughter Willa. In this week's episode, they came to a head when, after too-trusting Willa had a close call with murderer Clement Manzel (Boyd Holbrook), Raylan decided to put her on a plane home despite her protests. The hour ended on a bitter note as Raylan stepped away to take a phone call at the airport, only to see Willa walk off to board the plane without saying goodbye.

[This story contains spoilers from Justified: City Primeval‘s two-episode premiere.]
From The Wonder Years and Early Edition to Justified old and new, you’ve likely seen Michael Dinner’s name on your TV screen for as long as you can remember. Dinner has been directing since the early ’80s, including eight episodes of the original Justified. But ever since he co-wrote an episode of the Elmore Leonard-inspired series in 2015, he’s done a bit more writing and even served as co-showrunner of 2017’s Electric Dreams. So, when it came time to revive Justified and original series showrunner Graham Yost was committed to an Apple TV+ deal, Dinner, along with Dave Andron, stepped up to become co-showrunner of Justified: City Primeval, which combines Leonard’s 1980 crime novel, City Primeval, with the Raylan Givens-led world of Justified.

Vivian Olyphant knows what you’re thinking, but she won’t let it faze her.
The 20-year-old actor recently made her onscreen debut during the two-episode premiere of Justified: City Primeval, the revival of FX’s beloved neo-Western series that concluded in 2015. She plays Willa Givens, the daughter of Timothy Olyphant’s charming U.S. Marshal, Raylan Givens, and it’s a role she understands better than anyone as the real-life daughter of the series’ leading man. The younger Olyphant may have grown up on the Justified set, but she still had to go through a lengthier audition process than usual to play Willa. Ultimately, she earned the role by capturing Willa’s unlikely combination of street smarts and mischievous naiveté.
Vivian knew full well that claims of nepotism would come her way following New York Magazine’s highly publicized piece on the “nepo baby,...

From Logan and Sandman to Indiana Jones and Raylan Givens, Boyd Holbrook has a knack for being a thorn in the hero’s side.
Holbrook recently returned to the big screen in James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which marked the conclusion of Harrison Ford’s 42-year tenure as the title character of Indiana Jones. The Kentucky native played Klaber, a neo-Nazi wannabe who served as Jürgen Voller’s (Mads Mikkelsen) top lieutenant, resembling Holbrook’s role as Donald Pierce in Mangold’s Oscar-nominated film, Logan (2017). Nearly eight years after the conclusion of the original series, “Justified” has returned to FX. Tuesday marks the premiere of “Justified: City Primeval,” a continuation of the series that ran for six seasons.
From showrunners Dave Andron and Michael Dinner, “Justified: City Primeval” continues the story of Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant). After leaving Kentucky for Miami, Raylan continued to work as a U.S. Marshall and raise his daughter. But when an elusive criminal known as The Oklahoma Wildman (Boyd Holbrook) emerges in Detroit, Raylan will have to uproot his life in his pursuit of law and order.
The eight-episode continuation is based on the novel “City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit” by author Elmore Leonard. Consider this everything you need to know about how to watch new episodes:

Fans of the FX series Justified were fortunate enough to get six prodigious seasons of one of the best neo-Westerns ever put on television from 2010-2015. The show’s critical success was in no small part due to the stellar supporting cast throughout its run. Fans not only gravitated towards Timothy Olyphant’s Kentucky-fried charm as the no-nonsense Raylan Givens, but found a connection with the men and women Raylan worked with, the women he loved, and the larger-than-life outlaws he came across.
It will surprise many to hear that Justified: City Primeval barely even mentions Kentucky, or the characters that were a part of Raylan’s life for those six years. Kentucky is far behind Raylan, and that includes his long term fraternal-nemesis, Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) who isn’t a part of this limited series. “We dug coal together.”
Timothy Olyphant closed out Justified in 2015 with those powerful final words, an ode to his character Raylan Givens’ complicated relationship with his home Harlan County, his longtime friend-turned-enemy Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), and even himself. U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) had a time-honored tradition during the six seasons of the original “Justified.” The rakish law man would chase a baddie across Kentucky back roads and trailer parks. Bullets flew, and moonshine was consumed. Still, Givens always made time for a philosophical and deep conversation with his prey before the final showdown. Raylan would learn something humanizing about his nemesis’ motivation and, inevitably, realize he himself could be a dick on occasion. These talks often featured Boyd Crowder, Givens’ frenemy played by Walton Goggins with a mouthful of Biden-white teeth, a shock of black hair and buckets of country wisdom. They were so humanizing that you often forgot Boyd was a white supremacist turned drug dealer.
In “Justified: Primeval City,” Givens’ nemesis is killer and White Stripes aficionado Clement Mansell aka the Oklahoma Wildman. At a crucial moment, Mansell (Boyd Holbrook) sizes up the now middle-aged Givens.

The original “Justified,” developed by Graham Yost from Elmore Leonard’s book, “Fire in the Hole,” stands the test of time for several reasons. Its case-per-season approach makes each new investigation as accessible as it is arresting. Its star, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant), is a classic cowboy in a modern world, not always bucking against the trends but still stubbornly adhering to his own sense of right and wrong. Olyphant’s soft drawl and charming fortitude — peppered with terse quips and curt advice — go a long way on their own, though any assessment of “Justified” must give equal weight to Boyd Crowder, embodied with iconic verbosity and verve by the great Walton Goggins.
For six seasons, “Justified” thrived as a two-hander; it wasn’t that Raylan and Boyd were always on opposite sides, so much as their lives ran in such consistent parallel to one another that...

In the first episode of the new miniseries Justified: City Primeval, our old friend Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) — the quick-drawing, fast-talking, Stetson-wearing U.S. marshal from Harlan, Kentucky — is called to testify about a fugitive he brought back to Detroit. Defense attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis) calls him out for having threatened to put her client in the trunk of a car if he didn’t behave. This is the kind of stunt Raylan pulled all the time during the original run of Justified, and we found it charming as all get-out back then.

Whether it’s Hollywood’s inability to spawn new blockbuster icons or the entertainment industry’s commitment to placating an audience with an insatiable desire for nostalgia, the summer of 2023 has taken on a distinct Twilight-of-the-Action-Gods feeling.
The season started with Arnold Schwarzenegger doing the streaming equivalent of a ’90s Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, now with meditations on fatherhood and approaching retirement, in Netflix’s Fubar. Then Harrison Ford added meditations on godfatherhood and approaching retirement in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The only reason Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One isn’t about fatherhood and approaching retirement is a fear that if Tom Cruise were ever to actually confront, or even address, his own aging, the metaphorical dream factory would implode.

“There are only two kinds of guys out in the street chasing bad guys at your age — ones who got passed over for ‘the big chair,’ and the ones who just love it so much they’re gonna have to be dragged off. Only question is will they be breathing when it happens.”
That observation-slash-threat comes courtesy of Raylan Givens’ latest formidable foe, Clement Mansell aka “The Oklahoma Wildman,” in the FX limited series Justified: City Primeval. But it also speaks to the fact that the steely-eyed U.S. Marshal indeed cannot seem to stop doing that thing he does so well.

Plot: Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who’s already slipped through the fingers of Detroit’s finest once and aims to do so again.

Timothy Olyphant isn’t hanging up his hat anytime soon. The star and executive producer of “Justified: City Primeval” took the stage after the series premiered at this year’s Atx Television Festival and told a rowdy crowd he would happily return for more seasons.
“Look, I’d show up,” Olyphant said when asked if he would be open to returning as Raylan Givens. “Every time we’ve done this, I’ve had a good time. So I’d show up.”
Earlier in the post-screening Q&a, Olyphant was asked if he felt any trepidation about returning to beloved roles like Raylan in “Justified” and Seth Bullock in “Deadwood.”
“No more than I’d feel about any great part or any great opportunity,” he said. “As far as ‘Deadwood’ versus [‘Justified’], I never thought ‘Deadwood’ would happen. I didn’t honestly quite think I wanted it to happen, and it was such a lovely experience.

“Justified: City Primeval” returns to FX this July, 13 years after the original hit series “Justified” ended its run. Every time we’ve done this I’ve had a good time,” he told the audience Thursday during Atx TV Festival’s opening night in Austin, Texas.

Raylan Givens is back in action and I couldn’t be happier. FX has released the official trailer for Justified: City Primeval, a new limited series inspired by Elmore Leonard’s crime novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit.

Timothy Olyphant has brought his cowboy hat to the mean streets of Detroit as deputy U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens to cross paths with a violent, sociopathic killer 15 years after he left the hollers of Kentucky in FX’s original Justified drama, as revealed in the official trailer for FX’s Justified: City Primeval, which dropped Wednesday.
The series revival, based Elmore Leonard’s novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, has Givens on a collision course with Clement Mansell — aka The Oklahoma Wildman — a desperado played by Boyd Holbrook, who’s already eluded a Motor City police task force.
“I see you near my daughter again, I’ll kill you,” Givens tells Mansell at one point in the trailer after seeing him with his daughter, Willa Givens, played by Vivian Olyphant.
“Not if I see you first,” Mansell responds with his own taunt as he licks his wounds after a beat-down.

Many TV shows are brought back several years after their series finale, but one show poised to stand the test of time is Justified: City Primeval.

Having been off the air for about eight years now, the neo-noir world of "Justified" is coming back to television with "Justified: City Primeval," a miniseries based on Elmore Leonard's 1980 novel. The Emmy Award-winning original series, which ran for over six seasons, starred Timothy Olyphant as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, and featured a supporting cast including Joelle Carter, Nick Searcy, Jacob Pitts, Erica Tazel, and Walton Goggins.
"City Primeval" takes place many years after the 2015 series finale, with Raylan having left his life in Kentucky for Miami, where he's committed to raising his teenage daughter, Willa (now played by Vivian Olyphant), while trying to juggle his Marshal duties. But an incident on a Florida highway prompts a trip to Detroit, where he faces a new challenge in the deadly Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), also known as "The Oklahoma Wildman." According to the folks working behind the scenes, FX's "Justified: City Primeval" isn't your average spinoff — which makes sense, because "Justified" wasn't exactly a typical adaptation. Though the series initially based its plot on Elmore Leonard's story "Fire in the Hole," it later evolved into a pulpy neo-Western that marched to the beat of its own drum. So where does the upcoming limited series fit into that equation? In the words of actor Adelaide Clemens, "It's an extension of the universe."
Based on Leonard's novel of the same name, the series marks the return of Timothy Olyphant's smoldering gunslinger, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens. Where the original series left off, Raylan chose to embrace fatherhood, leaving Kentucky behind for a calmer life of co-parenting in Miami. Eight years later, he's balancing life as a marshal and a part-time father of his 14-year-old daughter, Willa. But calm has...

Graham Yost's "Justified," based on Elmore Leonard's stories with recurring character Raylan Givens, enjoyed a successful six-season run over the span of five years. Timothy Olyphant, who assumed the role of U.S. Marshal Givens, invested the character with gritty charisma that helped ground the show effortlessly. When FX announced a revival with the upcoming sequel series, "Justified: City Primeval," fans were delighted at the prospect of Olyphant reprising the role of Givens. Olyphant's return is definitely a cause for celebration, as he was clearly the beating heart of the parent series, melding seamlessly with new characters to help expand the scope of the high-stakes, crime-ridden world of "Justified."

When Timothy Olyphant's Raylan Givens returns this year in "Justified: City Primeval," the daughter he left Harlan to raise will be more than a mostly-offscreen source of character motivation. Justified is returning to the small screen in 2023, and a big Hollywood name helped the revival become a reality. Director Quentin Tarantino had some interest in adapting Elmore Leonard's 1980 City Primeval novel into a movie. A conversation with Timothy Olyphant on the set of the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood feature film ultimately led to Olyphant reprising his role as the lawman.
In the upcoming Justified: City Primeval series, viewers will see U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Olyphant) head to Detroit after living a quieter life in Miami for a decade. Aunjanue Ellis, Boyd Holbrook, Adelaide Clemens, Vondie Curtis Hall, and Vivian Olyphant also star.

Production of FX’s Justified: City Primeval was interrupted again Monday by a violent incident from outside the show’s set.
The series was filming in Chicago’s South Loop area Monday night when someone threw what police described as an “incendiary device” toward the set. The device didn’t explode, according to a report from Wls-tv, and no one was hurt. Police are investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made as of publication time.
The Monday incident happened three weeks after two vehicles carrying people shooting at one another crashed through barricades on the Justified set as it filmed on the city’s West Side. No cast or crew members were hurt in that incident either, but filming paused for several days.
“We took a break and made sure everyone was ok,” FX chairman John Landgraf told reporters last week.
