George Lucas vetted several options before roping in Richard Marquand to helm Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. Some directors were not interested in directing Lucas’s epic space film, while the creator rejected a few others. One of the directors whom Lucas didn’t want for the film was the Basic Instinct director Paul Verhoeven.

While he was a director with a vision, Verhoeven was known for including graphic scenes depicting violence and s*xual content in his films. Lucas wasn’t impressed by these scenes in one of the director’s films and decided to look for another director.

The title planet in Frank Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune" is a desolate desert world, only survivable if one has access to a stillsuit. A stillsuit is a head-to-toe garment that captures every microscopic piece of moisture that exudes from the wearer's body, filters and recycles it, and stores it for drinking. Yes, you drink your own sweat, urine, and feces in a stillsuit. When used properly, a wearer could subsist on their own fluids for weeks. In the novel, stillsuits also covered the wearer's face and head, wicking moisture from their hair and pores.
In the various film and TV adaptations of "Dune," including in Denis Villeneuve's most recent versions, the mask portion of a stillsuit is often replaced by a single breathing tube that extends under the wearer's nose. The nasal tube presumably gathered saliva and mucous, although it seems inefficient, given that the bulk of human saliva escapes from the mouth.

The Star Wars franchise is one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time and has spawned multiple films, shows, animated series, and comic books. The Galaxies created by George Lucas changed pop culture as well as blockbuster filmmaking since the first film was released in 1977. The film earned $775 million against a budget of $11 million.
While Lucas directed the first film in the original trilogy, he wanted to take more of a creative producer role in subsequent films of the original trilogy. The Empire Strikes Back was helmed by Irvin Kershner while Return of the Jedi was directed by Richard Marquand. However, Lucas reportedly first had David Lynch in mind for the latter.

This post contains spoilers for "Blue Velvet."
David Lynch's cinematic world tiptoes between stark reality and nightmarish dreams, where quaint, perfect lives and locales often hide Boschian hells. While some Lynchian small towns are infused with poetic romanticism despite harboring great evils (such as Twin Peaks), others, like Lumberton, weave an insincere facade with its aura of suburban bliss: a sentiment that forms the crux of Lynch's sensational, oft-misunderstood "Blue Velvet." Most of Lynch's work defies objective analysis, as the foundational ideas he embeds into his stories feel abstract and elusive, but are always tethered to reality in essential and terrifying ways. Although "Blue Velvet" helms one of the most straightforward narratives in Lynch's oeuvre — it is neither as labyrinthine nor heady as "Inland Empire" or "Mulholland Drive" — the film's graphic depictions of psychosexual impulses tend to confuse and alienate, with the merging of the real and the...

Only Murders in the Building ended Season 3 with the death of Jane Lynch’s character, Sazz. But like those late night infomercials, just wait – there’s more.
In an interview with People at the Alzheimer’s Association Magic of Music Gala on May 9, the actress, 63, shared that she’s still going to be a presence in Season 4.
“Well, I’m the murder victim, which is not a tease,” she said. “And so I have some really great flashbacks.”
Lynch added that she’ll “also appear in [the season] another way,” but provided no specifics.
“I don’t want to give it away though, but I’m in it a lot,” she said. “I’m in five out of 10 episodes, so I’m excited.”
In the show, Lynch plays the role of Sazz, Steve Martin’s Charles-Hayden Savage Hollywood stunt double.

A one armed man selling shoes, a lady with a log obsession, evil spirits called Bob who feed on pain and suffering, dwarves speaking backwards, a ton of doughnuts, plus a murder mystery with a killer reveal. It can only be one crazy series, can’t it? That’s right my fellow wonderful gore-hounds, we’re taking a psychedelic trip to the fictional Washington town of Twin Peaks. The original show ran from 1990 to 1991 and followed an investigation by FBI agent Dale Cooper, played to perfection by Kyle MacLachlan, into the murder of Sheryl Lee’s homecoming queen, Laura Palmer. The series didn’t end there though, no siree, writer / director David Lynch had grander plans for the residents of Twin Peaks.

Launched more than thirty years ago, David Lynch’s iconic mystery drama show Twin Peaks had a long and quite unstable television run with the second season potentially wrapping it all up back in 1991 and then coming back again with season 3 in 2017.
However badly the longtime fans of the series wanted to see more of Special Agent Dale Cooper on the screen, Twin Peaks had almost zero chances to be ever revived, but a significant update from the show’s executive producer might turn things into a new direction.
During her latest Q&a online section, David Lynch’s producing partner Sabrina Sutherland was asked whether the director had some ideas stock for Twin Peaks’ potential fourth season. The producer revealed that, though she’s mostly not a part of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s writing team, she’s yet aware of the fact that Lynch had never given up on another season anyway.

Because 90% of the movie franchises today are based on material from generations before, most big movies have mastered the art of the cameo. Since the 2010s particularly, they've gotten even better at incorporating legacy characters into the narrative, even if the movie technically isn't about them. "The Force Awakens" might've been all about introducing Rey/Finn/Poe to lead this new sequel trilogy, but they still gave Leia and Han enough screen time to "pass the torch" to the new generation.
This wasn't just a quick way to score some easy nostalgia points; it also assured the more fickle viewers in the audience that this new trilogy had plenty of respect for the original trilogy, that it wasn't going to stomp all over everyone's childhoods the way some fans feared. From "Scream" to "Jurassic Park" to "Ghostbusters," it feels like the safest way to start off a new string of...

David Lynch hasn’t taken on a feature film or TV project since releasing his groundbreaking “Twin Peaks: The Return” in 2017, but it hasn’t been for lack of trying. First, it was reported back in April that Netflix rejected his pitch for an animated film called “Snootworld.” And now his longtime producer Sabrina Sutherland has shed some light on “Unrecorded Night,” his planned Netflix series that was scrapped during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Loyal Lynch fans will recall that rumors began to circulate in 2020 that the auteur was planning to direct a new series that was developed under the working titles “Wisteria” and “Unrecorded Night.” Many regular Lynch collaborators, including Kyle MacLachlan and Mark Frost, went on to cryptically post images of wisteria flowers on their social media accounts, fueling speculation that Lynch was getting the band back together. Some even speculated that the show would be a Texas-set series...

Though Netflix ruined our hopes for another David Lynch movie––perhaps too much to ask from the people behind Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver, now streaming––the man more or less never stops creating. (When we did an interview he Zoomed from his woodworking office and showed off a lamp he was making.) Today we have our first Lynch track in some years, albeit in remix form––part and parcel of him once telling me he’s “a non-musician musician.”
For Mylène Farmer’s Remix Xl album, out today, he’s stripped-down her 1999 track “Je te rends ton amour” to expose a fuzzy bass line, thrumming and slightly abrasive à la something from the Lost Highway or Inland Empire soundtracks. A small transmission from Lynchland that, if nothing else, shows his creative energies remain.

‘AHS: Delicate’ enters early labor with a fun, frenzied episode that finds the perfect tone and goes for broke as its water breaks.
“I’ll figure it out. Women always do.”
American Horror Story is no stranger to remixing real-life history with ludicrous, heightened Murphy-isms, whether it’s AHS: 1984’s incorporation of Richard Ramirez, AHS: Cult’s use of Valerie Solanas, or AHS: Coven’s prominent role for the Axeman of New Orleans. Accordingly, it’s very much par for the course for AHS: Delicate to riff on other pop culture touchstones and infinitely warp them to its wicked whims. That being said, it takes real guts to do a postmodern feminist version of Rosemary’s Baby and then actually put Mia Farrow – while she’s filming Rosemary’s Baby, no less – into the narrative. This is the type of gonzo bullshit that I want out of American Horror Story!

This article contains possible spoilers for Dune: Part Three and Dune Messiah.
When Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part One opened in 2021, it only took Warner Bros. six days to announce the sequel. However, when Dune: Part Two opened this past March 1—despite doing huge business and clearly paving the way for a third chapter—it took the studio over a month to confirm a film of Dune Messiah was in development. Why the delay? Well, lots of possible reasons, actually.
Even though Dune: Part Two is likely to soon cross the $700 million mark at the global box office, it was an expensive movie to make at a reported $190 million ($25 million more than Part One), plus a marketing budget that likely took that final price tag well over the $300 million mark. Once you factor in that half the box office is going to theaters, you have a low margin for profitability,...

It may be a mystery to famed director David Lynch that Patrick Stewart was an acclaimed actor when the latter showed up on the set of his 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.
Well, sometimes directors have a clear vision of the ideal actor for a role, while other times, a happy accident can result in unexpected greatness. Such was the case with Lynch’s original 1984 Dune adaptation, in which he erroneously cast Patrick Stewart in a role that was meant for someone else.
Yes, Stewart, 83, inadvertently obtained the role of Gurney Halleck. In the process of replacing Aldo Ray at the eleventh hour, the director erroneously cast another Patrick Stewart.
David Lynch’s Dune 1984
Aside from being a financial disaster and receiving negative reviews, the film has developed a cult following over the years, and this intriguing casting mishap is just one of the many oddball tales surrounding its creation.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: It’s Time for IndieWire After the Dark Underside of Suburbia
I’ve long felt that the premise of “This Suburban Utopia Has Something Dark Lurking Underneath It” is among the lamest, most played-out tropes in all of media. Decades have passed since any serious person viewed the stylized suburban innocence of “Leave It to Beaver” as a remotely accurate depiction of American life, and contemporary attempts at “subverting” it often feel as if artists are mocking the same media that they grew up watching other artists mock without pausing...

With Daniel Craig bowing out after his James Bond was blasted into the afterlife at the end of 2023's "No Time to Die," the question of who will take on the iconic role next has been following the franchise for quite some time. In 2024, as our cultural norms shift and evolve, there's no reason why the super spy couldn't be played by anybody — maybe even, dare I suggest, a woman?
Prior to the release of "No Time to Die," the internet was abuzz with rumors that British actress Lashana Lynch would be the next 007. When the film arrived, it was revealed that Lynch's character, Nomi, did indeed inherit the codename from her predecessor. Later in the film, however, she requests that the title be given back to Bond, after which she takes on the codename 005. So, we didn't get a female Bond, but we sort of did for...

Before we can even get on the record, before that most familiar robot warning of “This meeting is being recorded,” Frederick Elmes is swapping stories about Albert Brooks. After greeting me by name, he mentions a news piece I had written––a blurb about the recent Brooks documentary Defending My Life. He worked with Brooks some, he says, as a camera operator, goes on to speak generously and thoughtfully about the atmosphere the director cultivated and maintained on set, what that meant in turn to his work as a cinematographer, to the cast and crew more generally. I am sitting and grinning like an idiot, not unlike an ancillary Brooks character––maybe Bruno Kirby in Modern Romance. It strikes me that this moment represents Elmes’ approach to tending the moving image: careful research, a focus on listening, the sharing of ideas stemming from observation, and an immediate instinct for collaborative thinking.

‘AHS: Delicate’ turns out its best episode of the season with a flashback-focused installment that recants Adeline’s brutal backstory.
“We don’t have to stay where we’re born…”
Hestia, the namesake of AHS: Delicate’s antepenultimate episode of the season, is the Greek goddess of the hearth, home, and hospitality. This may seem like a benign thing to celebrate, but what is a family without a proper home? A home is the safe support system that keeps a family secure. To take this one step further, what is a womb if not a baby’s first home before they’re thrust into the world? Hestia is regarded as a goddess who’s both soft and strong, which are extremes that are forced upon every mother, whether it’s Anna, Adeline, or even Ivy. It’s a fundamental dichotomy that very likely will be the key to Anna’s...

When it comes to the James Bond franchise, progressive is not the first word that comes to mind. Despite this, the 2021 film No Time To Die revolutionized the film series after it introduced the first female 007 in the form of Lashana Lynch. There have been conversations around the same topic for quite some time, with Angelina Jolie famously stating that she did not want to play a Bond girl but the spy herself.
Sean Connery as James Bond
It would seem, however, that the Maleficent actress was not the first to voice these wishes, as over 60 years before the Lynch film, there were conversations about a Bond film being led by a female James Bond.
SUGGESTEDYears After Losing 007 Role to Daniel Craig, Henry Cavill Plays a Character That Inspired James Bond
Although this clearly did not pan out, the story around it was quite interesting.

Once upon a time, Netflix was in the business of auteur-driven animation, allowing filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro work on his dream project "Pinocchio," giving Henry Selick his first movie in 13 years after Disney killed his previous project, letting Charlie Kaufman deliver an existential kids' animated movie in "Orion and the Dark," and rescuing "Nimona" after Disney pulled the plug. The streamer has partnered with the likes of Glen Keane, Sergio Pablos, Richard Linklater, Chris Williams, Craig McCracken, and Jorge R. Gutiérrez, but a name that won't join this list anytime soon is legendary filmmaker David Lynch.
Speaking with Deadline, Lynch offered an update on his long-gestating animated movie "Snootworld," which he's been teasing since at least 2009. Lynch co-wrote the script for his animated feature debut with Caroline Thompson ("The Nightmare Before Christmas"), with Lynch penning the second of the film's three acts.

A few days ago, Legendary Entertainment revealed that Denis Villeneuve has started with the development work for Dune 3, aka Dune Messiah. The sequel, Dune 2, received a great response from the audience worldwide. The sci-fi fantasy film is based on Frank Herbert’s Dune movies. It stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Austin Butler and others.
In Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies, Timothee Chalamet plays Paul Atreides. When the movie was announced a few years ago, everyone was worried that it would be a good watch. In 1984, David Lynch also made a movie based on Frank’s novel. However, the film performed poorly at the box office, and even the audience wasn’t happy with Lynch’s adaptation.

David Lynch and Mark Frost’s iconic “Twin Peaks” surreal series had to be pulled back down to earth by network executives, especially when it came to providing a resolution for the central mystery.
The beloved series aired on ABC from April 1990 to June 1991; the show was later resurrected by Showtime with 2017’s “Twin Peaks: The Return.” Prequel film “Fire Walk With Me” centered around the events prior to “Twin Peaks,” which opens with high school character Laura Palmer’s murder.
According to co-creator Frost, ABC threatened to “stop sending us money” for production if Season 2 did not provide some resolution to Laura Palmer’s killing. Frost told Variety that Lynch would ideally have preferred for the mystery to “go on forever.”
“We literally had a gun to our head from the network,” Frost said. “As I recall, they were just going to stop sending us money if we didn’t deliver this.

The Alzheimer’s Association California Southland Chapter is putting the finishing touches on its program for the upcoming Magic of Music Gala at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City on May 9.
The fundraiser, designed to honor “Alzheimer’s heroes,” will help support the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association and the local California Southland community. Jane Lynch and Kate Flannery will serve as the night’s co-hosts — alongside gala chairs and business leaders Peter and Camille Goldstein — and the pair will also perform songs from their “anti-cabaret,” Two Lost Souls. Honorees for the event include the 2014 film Still Alice, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, as well as Maria Shriver and Patrick Schwarzenegger and hosts Lisa Foxx and Valentine.
“We’re excited to co-host this year’s Magic of Music Gala and perform songs from our cabaret show,” said Lynch and Flannery. “Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that deserves our critical attention.

David Lynch is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s biggest visionaries and an author who will forever be remembered in history among the names that have changed movies for the better. Best known as the author of Twin Peaks, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and the surreal, experimental movie Eraserhead, Lynch has recently revealed to Deadline that he has an idea for an animated movie Snootworld which he hopes to release in the future despite, as he reveals, the rejection he got from Netflix.
Lynch’s unique vision could be seen in many of his live-action movies or series, and while fans are hoping for a continuation of Twin Peaks, after the enigmatic conclusion of the third season, it seems that Lynch has other priorities at the time and that he desperately wants to make an animated movie.

The Women’s World Championship will remain with Rhea Ripley as Mami defeated The Man to kick off WrestleMania Xl Saturday. Ripley was on a mission not to just defeat Becky Lynch, but humiliate her with an incredible strength advantage. Ever the fighter, Lynch refused to be dominated, battling back in typical Lasskicker fashion. The Man finally gained the upper hand thanks to her resiliency, punctuated by a huge leg drop to the back of the champion’s head, but the power of Ripley allowed her to dump the challenger on her head. Despite David Lynch’s feature-length animation project having been rejected by Netflix, the fillmaker is still seeking financing for Snootworld.
David Lynch has been quietly trying to get an animated feature film up and running and although he might not have found the required funding to get the project into production, he isn’t giving up yet.
According to Deadline, the project is titled Snootworld, and despite Lynch being famed as a filmmaker whose tastes veer towards the mature, this one is said to be ‘story that children and adults can appreciate.’
The script for Snootworld was written a couple of decades ago, with Lynch working with Caroline Thompson to create the story.

A couple decades ago, legendary filmmaker David Lynch – who we have to thank for Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, the 1984 version of Dune, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, The Straight Story, and Mulholland Drive, among other things – started working with The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, The Addams Family, and Welcome to Marwen writer Caroline Thompson on the screenplay for an animated movie called Snootworld… and even though the Netflix streaming service recently turned down the chance to bring Snootworld into our world, Lynch told Deadline that he’s not giving up on getting the movie made.
Lynch said, “I don’t know when I started thinking about Snoots but I’d do these drawings of Snoots and then a story started to emerge. I got together with Caroline and we worked on a script. Just recently I thought someone might be interested in getting behind this...

David Lynch is claiming Netflix didn’t want to greenlight his “wacky” animated feature, “Snootworld.”
The “Twin Peaks” and “Blue Velvet” auteur told Deadline that his long-awaited animated debut has been two decades in the process. Lynch co-wrote the script with “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “The Addams Family” scribe Caroline Thompson; the feature has a strict three act structure, with Lynch penning act two.
Lynch revealed that Netflix allegedly “rejected” the project most likely since “old fashioned fairytales are considered groaners.” IndieWire has reached out to Netflix.

Deep in the morass of unmade David Lynch films––among the better-known likes Ronnie Rocket, One Saliva Bubble, Antelope Don’t Run No More, and Dune Messiah––is Snootworld, an animated, family-friendly project his ex-wife Peggy Reavey once claimed would be “David’s Harry Potter.” Some two decades since he began writing a script with Caroline Thompson and fifteen-or-so years since the last bit of speculation, Lynch has––in a somewhat uncharacteristic move––announced his hopes to find financing in an interview with Deadline.
This after, Lynch tells us, Netflix rejected a pitch for the feature, which Thompson revealed is the story of Snoots, “tiny creatures who have a ritual transition at aged eight at which time they get tinier and they’re sent away for a year so they are protected.” In yet another of his riffs on Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, chaos ensues “when...

There are a lot cult classics from the 1980s, but Road House stands somewhere near the top. Sure, many of its fans wouldn’t label it as such, since they lovingly, legitimately and unironically adore it. But there’s no use in arguing it belongs in one camp over another or that it is unapologetically everything it sets out to be. But it – and its cult following – couldn’t have happened without a few broken ribs, a don’t-take-no producer and some pervy late-night phone calls to a star’s spouse. Yes, it involves Bill Murray… So, pour some suds and rip some throats because we’re gonna find out: Wtf Happened to this Movie?!

David Lynch’s take on Dune in 1984 has long been a topic of debate, with many considering it a misfire despite its later cult status. Frank Herbert's "Dune" is one of the most influential science fiction books of all time. The original novel remains a groundbreaking story that draws inspiration from the hero's journey or monomyth, environmental science, politics, real history, and Arabic religion and Middle Eastern culture to deliver an unprecedented epic about the dangers of messianic leaders and the importance of ecology.
