The cape was once the kingmaker. But the movie stars at the top of studios’ most-wanted lists today have largely avoided cinematic universes. Instead of being pulled up to the A-list with a call from Marvel or DC (like earlier breakouts Chris Evans, Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa), today’s top talents — according to THR’s survey of executives, managers and agents — were anointed by auteur directors. Austin Butler was tapped by Baz Luhrmann for Elvis, while Denis Villeneuve gave nearly a third of this list their first franchise movie with his Dune features.
Today’s young stars are also less formulaic than their predecessors of just a decade ago, whose indie debuts or tiny Oscar turns were quickly followed by IP-backed film series. They are more agnostic, too, moving easily among studio filmmaking, indie efforts and television. Unlike past eras, there’s also not a single “type” dominating the group.

For Jeff Nichols, The Bikeriders’ long road trip began with a handful of photographs. Among them in grainy black and white was a lone figure, captured in blurred motion and with his head turned away as he zoomed across the Ohio River. The only clear details were the leathered texture of his jacket and the gleam flashing off his Harley’s steel. When discovering this image and many like it in 2003, Nichols was in no way a motorcycle connoisseur. To this day, big bikes terrify him. But he instantly knew how the pictures—taken by New Journalism legend Danny Lyon between 1963 and 1967—made him feel. And he needed to express that sensation onscreen.

Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" movies are truly the definition of "star-studded." Bleak though "Dune: Part Two" may be, the sequel in particular is packed with big-name actors, from stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya to Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, and Javier Bardem. Villeneuve even managed to coax Christopher Walken out of a four-year acting hiatus for his follow-up to 2021's "Dune." All of which amounted to a set that must have been intimidating for even seasoned actors.
Take Dave Bautista, for example. When shooting "Dune: Part Two," the wrestler-turned-actor was particularly intimidated by "Elvis" star Austin Butler, before being surprised at how warm and supportive he was. Even Butler himself admitted to being unnerved by the scale of the production, revealing in a behind-the-scenes clip that he was nervous about the shoot and that arriving on set felt like "the first day of school."

David Adjmi did not intend to re-enter the world of theater.
With a handful of credits under his belt, Adjmi had sworn off playwriting after a high-stakes collaboration fell apart. Then, as he sought to fulfill one last playwriting grant obligation, he landed on the idea of Stereophonic, which was nominated for 13 Tony Awards this season, becoming the most nominated play in history.
The process of creating the play, about a fictional band trying to record a hit album in the 1970s, has both challenged and rewarded the collaborators, including Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, who wrote songs for the band, and the actors, who were called upon to perform those songs in the play, even though most of were not musicians before joining the cast. And for Adjmi, the play morphed into a deeply personal look at his career.

Lionsgate announced release dates for a few movies today, including Flight Risk, Mel Gibson’s first time in the director’s chair since Hacksaw Ridge. The action thriller, which stars Mark Wahlberg, will be released on October 18th.
Directed by Mel Gibson and written by Jared Rosenberg, Flight Risk finds Wahlberg playing a pilot transporting an Air Marshall (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.”
Our own Chris Bumbray was able to see a trailer for Flight Risk at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last month and he teased that Wahlberg is playing “Way against type” in the movie. “He even shaved his head to look like he has a bald pate,” Bumbray wrote. “Looks like a really tight kickass thriller, and Gibson Really makes Walhberg look crazy in this.

Eddie Vedder Joins Harrison Butker Critics Following NFL Kicker’s Divisive College Graduation Speech
Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and an order of nuns at Benedictine College can be added to the growing list of those denouncing the divisive commencement speech given by Kansas Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker at Benedictine College last week.
At a sold-out Las Vegas Pearl Jam concert on Saturday at the MGM Grand, Vedder joined Butker naysayers — including the National Football League — in denouncing the speech where Butker condemned abortion, euthanasia, IVF, surrogacy and the LGBTQ community. He also denounced the “diabolical lies told to women,” suggesting that enforcing traditional gender roles is the better route.
After the concert’s opener, “Deep Sea Diver,” warmed up the Vegas crowd, Vedder thanked the band, led by singer Jessica Dobson and featuring Patti King on keyboards.
“That’s some good men and good women making up a great band,” Vedder said of the Seattle rock band. The singer, Jessica, and the keyboard player,...

Michael Mann confirmed during his press tour for Ferrari that his next film project would be adapting his novel, Heat 2, which serves as both a sequel and a prequel to his popular 1995 film that famously pitted together legendary actors Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. Not much is known about the film other than Mann being keen to work with Adam Driver again after Ferrari. However, speculation had grown that Elvis’ Austin Butler would be occupying the role of Chris Shiherlis, which had previously been played by Val Kilmer. Then, there would be fuel added to the fire of rumors thanks to a viral video that was making the rounds which shows Butler doing some gun training at Taran Tactical, which is the same facility where Keanu Reeves trains for the John Wick films.

Les Savy Fav brought a little bit a lot of chaos to their rendition of “World Got Great” on Late Night with Seth Myers on Wednesday night.
The occasion was a particularly special one for the New York City indie punk band. By day, Bassist Syd Butler and guitarist Seth Jabour are members of Seth Meyers’ house band, the 8G Band. You wouldn’t guess they were the tenured employees based on the performance, however, because vocalist Tim Harrington was the one strutting across the studio like he owned the building.

It has been seven years since the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie starring Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. It is, undoubtedly, one of the biggest franchises that Disney has been trying to reboot the movie series for quite a while.
Johnny Depp’s Capt. Jack Sparrow
In this scenario, reboot means the absence of Depp, and for obvious reasons, it would be hard for anyone to imagine the franchise without Depp leading the film series. However, recent reports suggest that Dune: Part Two star Austin Butler is being eyed to lead the new reboot of the popular movie series.

Jodie Comer is heading toward disturbing events after signing on to her latest film project with Kenneth Branagh, The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde. Branagh wrote and will direct the new film. Plot details are scarce, but Deadline’s exclusive report says The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde is a contemporary psychological thriller, with production kicking off in August in the UK.
Belfast producers Tamar Thomas, Laura Berwick, Becca Kovacik, Matthew Jenkins, Maximum Effort’s Ashley Fox, and Johnny Pariseau will join Branagh for the new film.
As Deadline points out, Comer’s signing onto the project is a significant boon for Branagh’s latest yarn. She’s an extraordinarily busy actress, so something about Branagh’s project must have caught her attention. Gerard Butler is re-teaming with the director of Den Of Thieves, this time to save one of the world’s most iconic buildings in Empire State.

Let’s face it, the list of things that Gerard Butler has saved is longer than the list of things he hasn’t saved. And with the production of Empire State now confirmed, the list of things Gerard Butler hasn’t saved will grow even shorter.

After performing epically in quite a few romantic comedies until 2010 and winning the hearts of fangirls worldwide, Gerard Butler seems to have switched lanes permanently into the action genre. Well, he is acing it in that too, considering how the 54-year-old actor is once again reportedly all set to return to the big screens with Empire State, his next major action-thriller project.

But while he is still performing as brilliantly as ever in this respective genre, viewers can’t help but notice a similar pattern in a lot of Butler’s movies of the action/thriller/adventure themes. That being said, after hearing reports of this very upcoming action movie of his, a lot of fans seem to know already what to expect to see from it!

Along with French distribution from Le Pacte, the film was also picked up by Constantin Film for Germany and all German-speaking territories, including Switzerland and Austria; Eagle Pictures for Italy; Tripictures for Spain; and Entertainment Film Distributors Limited for the U.K., per Deadline. At the Met Gala on Monday night, Baz Luhrmann teased that he may not be quite done with Elvis Presley-related projects, following his 2022 Austin Butler-starring film.
The director told The Hollywood Reporter, “The fans really want to know if all that footage we found in the vaults is going to become a concert film and I’m here to say I think it’s gonna happen.” In October, Luhrmann had posted on Instagram that “we’ve found reels and reels of never-before-seen footage of Elvis on Tour and That’s The Way It Is,” telling fans to “stay tuned.” An accompanying video showed a cardboard box with a Warner Bros. label and “Elvis outtakes box” written on the side.
That’s The Way It Is was a documentary following Elvis Presley’s Summer Festival in Las Vegas during August 1970 (released alongside his 12th album of the same name) and...

I’ve predicted Megalopolis, anticipated as it is, will have a clear dividing point: the cultural commentariat hoping to see “another film by the director of The Godfather” and those who appreciate “something that looks and sounds like a Star Wars prequel.” I am very firmly in the latter, was duly excited by the first image, and can only be pleased with the time-stopping debut teaser, arriving today via Le Pacte.
It comes with a sad addenedum. Coppola, sharing the teaser on Instagram, noted:
Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf.
As Coppola recently told Vanity Fair, “I wouldn’t have been able to make it without standing as I do on the shoulders of G.B. Shaw,...

Two of the more anticipated star turns on Broadway this season — Steve Carell making his debut in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Uncle Vanya and The Sopranos alum Michael Imperioli returning to the New York stage in Circle in the Square’s An Enemy of the People — got no love from Tony Award nominators today, and the West End hit Patriots, written by The Crown‘s Peter Morgan, barely registered on the roster, with only one nom for lead actor Michael Stuhlbarg.
Even more empty-handed than Patriots was The Wiz, the cheery, if rote, revival of the beloved Black retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Despite a star turn by Wayne Brady, it’s possible that Tony nominators saw the Broadway revival for the uninspired road show it is.
Other shows with zero nominations included I Need That starring Danny DeVito, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical Harmony,...

After altering his voice to play the king of rock and roll in "Elvis," Austin Butler made a dramatic shift by portraying the heartless Harkonnen warrior Feyd-Rautha in "Dune: Part Two." It's a choice that worked out well, as even though the star's latest performance also came with an on-screen voice that demands further examination, Butler proved he was just as adept at playing cruel and cunning as he was at transforming into iconic musical figures of the 20th century.
The nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Feyd-Rautha was a big part of Frank Herbert's 1965 novel on which the "Dune" films are based. In the book, protagonist Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet in the modern films) returns to the capital of Arrakis and faces off against Feyd-Rautha in a final battle — one which was brought to life for the big screen by director Denis Villeneuve and his production team for "Dune: Part Two.

No matter what you think of the Killing Eve finale, you can't deny that the thriller show is a true gem of the crime genre, and Jodie Comer's character Villanelle definitely played a large role in its success.
Villanelle was unpredictable, dangerous, charismatic and even mesmerizing in the mix of her villainous nature and seemingly "fun" personality. Killing Eve has been over for two years, and now that it landed on Netflix, it may be painful to dive back into the show's universe only to know that it's finished.
Well, Jodie Comer will soon return to our screens in yet another crime drama, so the Killing-Eve-shaped hole in your heart may be filled — even though her role is drastically different this time.

Young comic book fans might not realize the significance of the bloody battles and high drama shown in Frank Miller’s graphic novel, but watching Zack Snyder’s timeless epic 300 will never disappoint. But tracing back to Snyder’s 2006 landmark drama that broke new ground at the time of its release, the director revealed how he was initially rejected.
Hollywood filmmaker Zack Snyder (image credit: Wikimedia Commons)
Reminiscing the work that went into 300, Zack Snyder recalled convincing Warner Bros. to greenlight the project after long-drawn hesitation. Using clever tricks to persuade WB, Snyder’s methods eventually made their way into Gerard Butler’s movie and turned it into a classic.
Warner Bros. Was Initially Hesitant to Greenlight 300
It’s been more than a decade since Zack Snyder released Gerard Butler’s 300 in 2006. Yet, the movie somehow feels iconic and timeless, which later shaped the cinematic landscape following its release.

Overcommitted "Method" acting doesn't have to be a lifelong choice — just ask Austin Butler. The actor who famously gained an accent he had trouble losing to play Elvis Presley in "Elvis" can now be seen in theaters in a totally different role in "Dune: Part Two," and he says he tried to keep some work-life balance this time around.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Butler was asked if he chooses to stay in a "dark place" even after the cameras stop rolling to play a dark character. In "Dune: Part Two," the actor donned a bald cap and a serious scowl to play Feyd-Rautha, the ambitious Siridar-Baron who challenged Timothee Chalamet's Paul Atreides to a duel in the new film. It would've been tough to keep the mindset of Feyd-Rautha going 24/7 even if Butler had chosen to, but he told the LA Times he made the...

Black Butler , created by Yana Toboso, is a dark, supernatural story full of twists, turns and one hell of a butler . Black Butler centers on Ciel Phantomhive and his quest for revenge after surviving the tragic murder of his family. With the dashing and demonic butler, Sebastian Michaelis, now in his service, the series manages to be humorous and devastating at the same time. The anime adaptation of the manga started back in 2008 and had multiple seasons, several OVAs and a theatrical movie. While the manga continued, the anime didn't have another release since that movie in 2017 ( Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic ). Masters of the Air is the third World War II miniseries from Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, following Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Goetzman said Spielberg’s father had been pushing them to do the series about WWII pilots since their first.

When are you going to do the pilots? When are you going to do Europe? If we ever did another one that would be it.’ Then Don Miller’s book came along.”

You’ll be able to own Dune: Part Two on a shiny disc in just a few weeks’ time, as its DVD, 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release is set for the 27th May.
If you’ve been wondering when you’ll be able to own a physical copy of Dune: Part Two on disc, then wonder no longer. Warner Bros has announced that Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi extravaganza is out on DVD and Blu-ray from the 27th May. But you probably knew that from the headline.
The film’s digital release was on the 15th April, which is nice if you like downloading things – it saves shelf space and all that – but for those of us who like discs and boxes and that pleasant sound when a DVD or Blu-ray player drawer closes, it’ll be well worth waiting for a few more weeks.

Even though it’s only the start of April, it’s already been one hell of a year for Austin Butler. The Elvis actor started 2024 by taking to the skies in Apple TV+’s wartime drama Masters Of The Air, before blowing everyone away in Dune: Part Two with his transformative take on the fearsome Feyd-Rautha.
