Exclusive: Tier One, a military thriller novel series, could be heading to the small screen.
The book collection, which follows the adventures of an elite Navy Seal, written by Brian Andrews and Jeff Wilson, has been optioned by The Cross Brothers for a series adaptation.
It is the latest book to be optioned from Blackstone Publishing, the Oregon-based company that hired former Miramax executive Brendan Deneen to oversee its TV and film arm.
Tier One, which features six published books, a new one, Dempsey, coming out on February 21 and an eighth due in 2024, follows John Dempsey. Trained to fight as a Navy Seal, groomed to think as a spy, Dempsey is more than a door-kicker. More than a tactician. More than an assassin. He is the leader of America’s most elite task force of special operators. Tier One is his story, and the saga of the courageous men and...

Los Angeles (AP) -- Nancy Reagan, the helpmate, backstage adviser and fierce protector of Ronald Reagan in his journey from actor to president - and finally during his 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease - has died. She was 94.
The former first lady died Sunday at her home in the Bel-Air section of Los Angeles of congestive heart failure, assistant Allison Borio told The Associated Press.
Her best-known project as first lady was the "Just Say No" campaign to help kids and teens stay off drugs.
When she swept into the White House in 1981, the former Hollywood actress partial to designer gowns and pricey china was widely dismissed as a pre-feminist throwback, concerned only with fashion, decorating and entertaining. By the time she moved out eight years later, Mrs. Reagan was fending off accusations that she was a behind-the-scenes "dragon lady" wielding unchecked power over the...

Jeffrey Wilson knows a thing or two about warfare, having served two tours in Iraq as a trauma and combat surgeon, so we were definitely intrigued when we heard about his war novel/supernatural thriller mash-up Fade to Black. Here are a few more details about the new book published by JournalStone.
Synopsis:
A young man is caught between two terrifying worlds. In one, he is Marine Sergeant Casey Stillman. Locked in combat in the streets of Fallujah, Iraq, he is lying next to his dead and dying friends, bleeding in the street—until he wakes up at home, in bed with his wife. In this other world, he is Jack Keller, a high school science teacher, husband, and devoted father to his little girl. But the nightmares of war continue to haunt him—and they’re vivid, they’re horrifying, and they’re way too real.
When news of killed Marines in Fallujah surfaces,...

The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University hosted a panel discussion last month that included writer/filmmaker Bill Wittliff to celebrate the launch of the second volume in its Lonesome Dove book series with the University of Texas Press.
Wittliff, Lonesome Dove screenwriter and co-executive producer, joined other contributors of A Book on the Making of Lonesome Dove to provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse into both Lary McMurtry's novel and its adaptation into the 1989 Western television miniseries.
"Bill (Wittliff) told me several times on the set, 'If you just take care of Lonesome Dove, Lonesome Dove will take care of us,'" said miniseries extra Stephen Harrigan, who moderated the panel. Harrigan is an author and screenwriter in his own right.
John Spong wrote A Book on the Making of Lonesome Dove, which includes photos from the set from Jeff Wilson and Witliff. Spong and Wilson, also panelists, recounted their experiences...

In August of 2011, the Navy Seal community suffered its worst single day loss of life in its more than 50-year history when a team of SEALs aboard a special operations helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan. Like everyone with ties to the Naval Special Warfare, writer Jeffrey Wilson was deeply affected by this event. Everyone in the community is connected in some way to the families devastated by this tragedy.

Update, 4:00 p.m.: According to RadarOnline, Lindsay attempted to make amends for showing up late yesterday, and bought lunch from In-n-Out Burger for the morgue's staff.
Los Angeles -- Lindsay Lohan's arrival at the morgue for community service – Take Two – had a better result Friday as the actress was quickly put to work after showing up early.
News helicopters hovered over the coroner's facilities and cameras greeted her black sport utility vehicle when Lohan reported for duty, one day after officials turned her away for being 40 minutes late to an orientation session.
Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Lohan arrived "real early" Friday, completed her orientation and was put to work before 8 a.m. She had been ordered to report at the coroner's facilities at 7 a.m., but Lohan's publicist, Steve Honig, wrote in an email that the actress had been outside for more than an hour before it opened.

Los Angeles — Actress Anne Francis, who was the love interest in the 1950s science-fiction classic "Forbidden Planet" and later was sexy private eye in "Honey West" on TV, has died at age 80.
Francis died Sunday at a Santa Barbara nursing home, said Bill Guntle, a funeral director McDermott-Crockett & Associates Mortuary in Santa Barbara.
Francis, who had surgery and chemotherapy after being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2007, died of complications of pancreatic cancer, her daughter, Jane Uemura, told the Los Angeles Times.
Francis, a stunningly beautiful blonde with a prominent beauty mark, appeared opposite such stars as Spencer Tracy, Paul Newman, Robert Taylor and Glenn Ford in some of the most popular films of the 1950s. But "Forbidden Planet" and "Honey West" made her reputation.
"Forbidden Planet" was hailed in Leonard Maltin's "2006 Movie Guide" as "one of the most ambitious and intelligent films of its genre."

Ben Berkowitz had a problem. His block of State Street, an expanse of charming storefronts and wood-frame houses that stretches from the border of Yale's campus into New Haven's grittier East Rock neighborhood, kept getting hit with graffiti. The 31-year-old did everything a good citizen was supposed to do: He called the city. He left multiple voice mails. He urged his neighbor to speak up. Eventually, he founded the Upper State Street Association to foster neighborhood pride.
