It all began with the sound of thundering footsteps and a now-iconic roar before giving way to Akira Ifukube’s equally iconic music. Japanese cinema and monster movies worldwide would never be the same again. In the beginning, Godzilla represented the ultimate in fear and destruction. A creature so colossal, he could lay waste to entire cities just by lumbering through them and swinging his mighty tail before setting them ablaze with a burst of his atomic breath. Over the years he evolved from national terror to national treasure, becoming a protector and kind of mascot to the nation of Japan. He was transplanted and championed all over the world. Eventually he became a joke and a marketing tool used to sell everything from Fiats, to Snickers bars, to Nike shoes in a one-on-one pickup game with Charles Barkley. Within the past year, Godzilla has come full circle with the...

Following a devastating typhoon, reporter Sakai (Akira Takarada) hears that a local entrepreneur Kumayama (Yoshibumi Tajima) has bought a gigantic egg that washed ashore for his company. Along with his partner Torahatta (Kenji Sahara), they plan to exhibit the egg for profit but are visited by two tinny twin women, the Cosmos, (Emi and Yumi Ito) who reveal the egg belongs to Mothra. Seeking shelter with Sakai and friends Prof. Miura (Hiroshi Koizumi) and Junko(Yuriko Hoshi), the group promises the egg’s return to The Cosmos and their island home. Godzilla appears, drawn by the egg, and Mothra arrives to drive him off until it’s struck a fatal blow. While the military deals with Godzilla’s advances, the women and their friends prey for the egg to hatch and the larval caterpillars swim off to deal with Godzilla once and for all.

Ten years after the success of “Godzilla”, it became more than evident that the popularity of the kaiju was nowhere near the end and had arguably only just begun. With the commercial acclaim of both “Mothra” and the ambitious “King Kong vs. Godzilla”, producer Toho would continue the franchise with now one more entry per year, staring with “Mothra vs. Godzilla”, which saw the giant reptile with the star of Ishiro Honda’s movie just a few years prior. While the feature also shows the technical advances when it came to shooting these kinds of movies, it also stayed true to the themes which Honda and co-author Takeo Murata had introduced in the first movie of the franchise, namely the battle of man vs. nature and the danger of nuclear technology, with the director’s skepticism seemingly have grown over the past decade if the story is any indicator.

When looking at the landscape of Japanese cinema, it is hard to imagine it without the likes of Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Yasujiro Ozu, which, much due to their re-discovery and evaluation by European critics and film festivals, have gained a reputation of being part of the quintessential cinematic canon. However, when the boutique label Criterion announced their release of an edition of the first “Godzilla”-features, the event was met with both excitement from cinephiles, but also criticism, since many though there were many other titles more deserving of a treatment such as this. Among many other features, what this discussion highlighted was the narrow scope of many filmfans and so-called connoisseurs of the medium, but also the fact that Ishiro Honda, despite being highly regarded among his peers, most notable Kurosawa himself, never truly received the kind of acceptance his colleagues did. If there is any feature...

Reboots of long-established franchises have regularly been recurring in the Japanese entertainment industry. For example, the ongoing “Shin Japan Heroes Universe” has modernized numerous classic pieces of tokusatsu history with movies such as “Shin Godzilla,” “Shin Ultraman,” and the upcoming “Shin Kamen Rider.” Reboots have also taken a unique direction in present-day cinema’s independent side. Such an example is reimagining a long-lost piece of Japanese cinema. That is the case with the outlandish low-budget film “The Great Buddha Arrival.”
on Amazon
The original “The Great Buddha Arrival” is a lost 1934 independent kaiju movie directed by pioneer filmmaker Yoshiro Edamasa who served as a mentor to many filmmakers, including special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya. Its place in Japanese cinema is rather significant as it was one of the earliest pieces of daikaiju filmmaking ever constructed, predating the original “Godzilla” directed by Ishiro Honda, by two decades.

Japanese actor Akira Takarada, best known for his role in Toho's "Godzilla" movie series, has died at the age of 87. Takarada received top billing in the original 1954 "Godzilla" film, in which he starred as Hideto Ogata, a sailor for the South Seas Salvage company and one-third of the movie's central love triangle. His character had to liaison with the Japanese Coast Guard after an Sos call came in from the first ship that Godzilla sank, and he would be there at the end to help deliver the Oxygen Destroyer.

Ever since the critical and commercial success of Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land”, the musical, once representative of the old Hollywood studio system, has experienced some kind of comeback. While it seems more like an escapist fantasy to some with its dance and singing routines seemingly coming out of the blue and its wild, vibrant colors, the tales of people being lifted out of their at times dire environment and going through an adventure of their own, make it perhaps the best suited genre for a world in desperate need for some entertainment and fluff. Japanese director Shinobu Yaguchi has been making quite a name for himself as the maker of light entertainment, which has been very successful, also international level. His latest feature “Can’t Stop the Dancing” is no exception to the rule as it tells the story of a businesswoman finding her true calling, while at the...

As we recently reported, Criterion Collection will release 15 Godzilla films from the Showa era (initially released between 1954–1975) in a Blu-ray box set this October, and we now have a look at a brand new trailer for the release that gives us a tease of the new high-def digital transfers.
"In 1954, an enormous beast clawed its way out of the sea, destroying everything in its path—and changing movies forever. The arresting original Godzilla soon gave rise to an entire monster-movie genre (kaiju eiga), but the King of the Monsters continued to reign supreme: in fourteen fiercely entertaining sequels over the next two decades, Godzilla defended its throne against a host of other formidable creatures, transforming from a terrifying symbol of nuclear annihilation into a benevolent (if still belligerent) Earth protector. Is it possible, in the grand age of visual and storytelling sophistication in which we live (the sarcasm is coming through, isn’t it?), to experience the exquisite delirium of an old Japanese kaiju movie, say, anything in the Godzilla-and-related-monsters series from roughly 1957 to 1975, without responding to it simply as inept camp, or as something to be immediately discounted or condescended to because of the “fakeyness” of its special effects? (In that time range I’ve deliberately left out the original Gojira, released in 1954, a movie that has always, and particularly since its original Japanese version was re-distributed in the Us in 2004, enjoyed a measure of respect from demanding genre audiences because of its status as a painful and powerful response to the devastation at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II.) Is it possible to enjoy these usually formulaic rubber-monster orgies of destruction precisely because of their artificiality?...

With the population of Japan aging more and more, films that deal with the lives of the elderly have become somewhat of a trend, with films like “Sweet Bean“, “Pecoross’s Mother and Her Days”, and many more. “A Sparkle of Life” implements a rather humorous approach to the subject. The film was a huge hit in Japan, and even received praise from late theatre director Yukio Ninagawa who described it as “a movie that makes getting old Ok”.),

'The Beginning or the End' 1947 with Robert Walker and Tom Drake. Hiroshima bombing 70th anniversary: Six movies dealing with the A-bomb terror Seventy years ago, on Aug. 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima. Ultimately, anywhere between 70,000 and 140,000 people died – in addition to dogs, cats, horses, chickens, and most other living beings in that part of the world. Three days later, America dropped a second atomic bomb, this time over Nagasaki. Human deaths in this other city totaled anywhere between 40,000-80,000. For obvious reasons, the evisceration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has been a quasi-taboo in American films. After all, in the last 75 years Hollywood's World War II movies, from John Farrow's Wake Island (1942) and Mervyn LeRoy's Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) to Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor (2001), almost invariably have presented a clear-cut vision...

August 6th and 9th, 1945 forever changed the course of history. When the first nuclear bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, World War II ended, but a new fear was born that dominated the thoughts of all men, women, and children for decades to come. The Cold War, atomic bomb testing, a cartoon turtle telling children to “duck and cover”, and this new technology that had the actual potential to literally end the world changed the perception of what was scary. Art reflects life, so cinema began to capitalize on these fears. Gone were the days of creepy castles, cobwebs, bats, vampires, werewolves, and the other iconic images that ruled genre cinema in film’s earliest decades. I'll be the first to admit my pessimistic attitude when it was announced a few months back that Dallas Comic-Con was sold to FanExpo out of Canada. I felt as if my hometown event was being invaded upon and diluted. How could a company out of Canada know what us hard-to-please folks in Texas really want? After this year's Dallas Comic-Con, I can tell you they know a whole lot about what we Southerners are looking for than you would think.
With the exception of maybe one show, I've attended every Sci-Fi Expo and Comic-Con that's taken place for the past thirteen years. I was there when the events alternated between the Plano Centre and the Richardson Civic Center. I covered the very first show at the Irving Convention Center. If you haven't already caught the monstrous mayhem that is Gareth Edwards' 'Godzilla' in theatres this past week then we suggest you get down there as soon as possible. In its first weekend the blockbuster managed to take in an impressive $196.2 million worldwide and so of course Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. are very keen for work to begin right away on the sequel. And now that an official 'Godzilla 2' is in the works it is assumed by most that British director Edwards would helm again for the follow-up having made such an excellent job the first time around. 'Godzilla' stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson ('Kick-Ass 2'), Bryan Cranston ('Breaking Bad'), Elizabeth Olsen ('Silent House'), Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins ('Made in Dagenham'), David Strathairn ('Lincoln'), Ken Watanabe ('Inception'), Richard T. Jones ('Event Horizon'), Patrick Sabongui, Yuki Morita,...

Directed by Ishirô Honda, Japanese classic Gojira (1954) – or Godzilla – spawned 30-ish sequels, along with innumerable spin-offs and spoofs. You might have heard a tiny bit about one of them this week. Inspired by 1953's The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and the 1952 re-release of King Kong (1939), Gojira started a lengthy stream of Kaiju ("strange creature") films leading right up to Cloverfield (2008). And yet, I wonder how many of Big G's new fans have seen the original B&W version, and whether it can possibly stand up to scrutiny 60 years later? Armed with a free DVD from a newspaper that Loves demonising imaginary monsters, I set about acquainting myself.
The film begins with the mysterious sinking of not one, but two, model boats. This causes great consternation at the Maritime Safety Bureau, where hysterical families await news of their loved ones. Could it be an underwater volcano? Floating mines? "Send more ships!

It’s May now, and with the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 last weekend, we are clearly in summer movie season proper. And in that spirit, this week’s Trailer Trashin’ takes another look at my most anticipated movie of the summer – Godzilla.
Premise: The world’s most famous monster is pitted against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.
My take: As I’ve said multiple times in this columns, I am ridiculously excited for Godzilla. And with the release only a week away, my anticipation is at a fever pitch. Recently, a new Asian trailer, which is in English with what I believe are Mandarin Chinese subtitles, was released. This is probably the last trailer we’ll get before the movie’s release next week, and it really underscores why I’m so excited for the film. (Warning: Potential Spoilers Ahead!)

Another clip from Godzilla has arrived, and just like with the four that came before it, we absolutely, positively refuse to watch it. We hear the clip is awesome, but we don't want a single second spoiled!

Over the weekend Japanese Godzilla fans took to the Internet to call the new American Godzilla... well... a fatty! It's time for a bit of a wake-up call for the land of the rising pork-bun!
"Whichever way you look at it, he's an American fatty," posted one fan after promo images and trailers went online in Japan." He got fat in America on cola and pizza," tweeted another fan. "He's couch potato Godzilla"; "It's got no neck"; "He Supersized"; and "Marshmallow-Godzilla?" were just a few of the reactions from fans.
Some were less harsh about the new Godzilla but still unimpressed: "It's chubby and cute," wrote one. "It looks like a seal," said another. Others were simply more forgiving: "I'm looking forward to this. Well, everyone gets middle-age spread."
Oh yeah? Well, call me crazy, but your Godzilla was pretty friggin' portly too! Think we're wrong? Stuff this in your sushi roll!

On tap right now is a smorgasbord of goodies for Legendary Pictures' upcoming take on Godzilla that's home to some amusing news coming out of Japan and the very first clips from the movie, which we refuse to watch. Will you?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the name "Godzilla" is a combination of "gorilla" and "kujira," the Japanese word for whale. For many Japanese lovers of their country's original monster, the upcoming Hollywood re-creation is not enough muscular primate and too much blubbery cetacean.

With all the good Godzilla news coming out this past year, it was only a matter of time before something crappy hit the wire. As it turns out, franchise star Akira Takarada's cameo has been omitted from the theatrical cut of the film.
The news comes from Yutaka Ichimura on Facebook, who writes that "Takarada-san today revealed during his talk show at 'Super Festival' in Tokyo that his cameo scenes for the upcoming Legendary's 'Godzilla' were omitted and would not be included in the final film."
Super bummer, but let's hope for the goods to be included in the home video release, shall we? Also in other dubious Godzilla news, The L.A. Times posted a new image which is stunning but also has us thinking it's fan made as no one in it is running. Call us crazy, but a 200-foot tall lizard would have us running like...
