I love Star Trek. It’s one of the most unique fandoms since it features multiple different properties in the same universe. Don’t get me wrong, I love Star Wars, but something about Star Trek that raises it to another level. There are so many shows that are unique in their own way. You have Star Trek T.O.S, Star Trek The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Enterprise, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Picard.
The point is that there is something for everyone. Fans are a little bit less toxic than other fandoms. My theory is that because there are so many shows there is at least one show that everyone can agree is good. So if someone were to, let’s say, hate Prodigy,...

A new face has joined the ensemble for the final season of "Star Trek: Discovery," along with a seemingly familiar set of pointy ears. A character named Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is poised to board "Star Trek: Discovery" for the show's last voyage on Paramount+, and at first blush, this new player appears to be a Vulcan or similar alien species. A TrekMovie interview with series co-showrunner Michelle Paradise, however, has revealed that Rayner isn't Vulcan or Romulan after all: he's actually part of a lesser-known "Star Trek" species called the Kelleruns.
"He's a Kellerun," Paradise told the outlet after also reportedly confirming the character's background to SFX Magazine. "We were looking for a species that not a lot had been done with them. We definitely wanted another non-human on the ship and taking care of things." Currently, Doug Jones' Kelpien executive officer Saru is the most obviously alien member of the Discovery crew,...

At the very end of the first season of "Star Trek: Picard," after the story had concluded and everyone was headed back home, the violent bounty hunter Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Admiral Picard's close friend Raffi (Michelle Hurd) sat idly conversing. They reached out and began romantically holding hands, implying that the characters were initiating a romance. Previously throughout "Star Trek," both Seven and Raffi had only been seen having romances with men, so their respective bisexuality came as a pleasant surprise.
Sadly, at the start of the second season of "Picard," enough time had passed that Seven and Raffi had already dated for a while ... and had broken up. There was now a great deal of romantic resentment between them, and they had to struggle to fulfill their mission in the 21st century (the second season featured a time travel plot). In the 1995 "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Our Man Bashir," the title character, Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), is in the station's holosuites, enacting a sexy, Ian Fleming-like spy story with his Cardassian paramour Garak (Andrew Robinson). Meanwhile, the rest of the station's senior staff are involved in a runabout accident, and they are beamed out of the explosion in the nick of time. The transporter, however, was also damaged, and the unique transporter patterns of the senior staff have to be stored in a secondary computer until it can be repaired. Perhaps predictably, the patterns end up in the same computer memory core that controls the holosuite, and the senior staff begin appearing -- as holograms -- in Bashir's spy adventure. If Bashir kills the holographic versions of his friends, their patterns will be deleted from the computer memory and they'll die.

Actor Alexander Siddig, who played the plucky, handsome young medical officer Dr. Julian Bashir on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," began the series credited as Siddig El Fadil, his professional name from the start of his career until he changed it in 1995. Dr. Bashir was something of a naïf in the show's first few seasons, and would, in subsequent seasons, come to outgrow his once-firmly-held immature notions that practicing medicine in desperate locations is a bright, plucky adventure. He quickly came to realize that he merely needed to work hard to help people in need, and that righteousness was a reward unto itself. Unlike a lot of the "young" characters on "Star Trek" (Wesley Crusher and Harry Kim come to mind), Dr. Bashir was allowed to grow up; he had personality traits other than his youth.

"If they are born, they will bring about the end of days." Magnolia Pictures has revealed the official trailer for a religious horror thriller film titled Deliver Us, from filmmakers Cru Ennis & Lee Roy Kunz. This was originally titled Kill the Child, which is too dark and frightening to use as a title. There's so many strange things about this - she's a Russian Nun, then they try to stop her pregnancy, of course those "bad guys", so she goes on the run. According to an ancient prophecy, a woman will give birth to identical twin boys: one will be the Messiah, and the other the Anti-Christ. When Sister Yulia claims to have immaculately conceived twins, the Vatican sends a team of priests to investigate. They are joined by affiliates of a secret society, the Vox Dei. However, an American Jesuit, Father Fox, discovers their plan and helps her to escape.

In "Those Old Scientists," the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," a magical time portal is discovered in the late 24th century by the characters from "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Ensigns Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawney Newsome) accidentally activate the portal and are thrown back in time 120 years to where Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew discover them. For the sake of retaining timeline purity, everyone agrees that Boimler and Mariner need to be sent back to the future. The issue is that no one knows how to activate the portal in the 23rd century, as it requires a rare element that is near-impossible to manufacture, and it is emblazoned with symbols that even the talented Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) cannot translate.

Ever since the announcement of the second season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," Trekkies have been anticipating this episode. "Those Old Scientists" will see Ensign Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Ensign Mariner (Tawney Newsome) from "Star Trek: Lower Decks" pass into the world of "Strange New Worlds," and interact directly with Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Spock (Ethan Peck) and all the rest. The shows are set about 120 years apart, however, so the characters will have to make use of an ancient, mystical time-travel portal in order to meet, but that's no big deal; "Star Trek" has featured multiple mystical time-travel portals in the past. At the head of the episode, the "Lower Decks" characters will be animated. Once they pass through said portal, they will appear in live action. The two featured voice actors will reprise their roles.

Gene Roddenberry’s vision of space-age utopia has always been one of idealism and intelligence, of peace and prosperity. From the start, he wanted Star Trek to showcase the best of humanity, confronting modern-day issues and appearing as an aspirational model for society. So, naturally, when it came time to hurl us 300 years into the future, he did it by building on stories from 400 years in the past.
Having cut his teeth writing on early Westerns and police procedurals, Roddenberry wanted to elevate his sci-fi weekly into something more than typical genre television – he wanted to appeal to intellectuals. And how better to appeal to the thinking person than with a library’s worth of bookish influences.
Classic literature was right there in Roddenberry’s original pitch: Captain Kirk was described as a Horatio Hornblower-type, while the show itself was referred to as Gulliver’s Travels in space. His sequel series,...

In the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Trials and Tribble-ations", Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) and several other members of the "DS9" crew had to travel back in time to avert a crisis. It seems a time-traveling assassin had inserted himself into the events of the original series "Star Trek" episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" and Sisko had to go undercover next to Captain Kirk (William Shatner) to prevent a bomb from blowing up. Using revolutionary special effects technology, Sisko, Dax (Terry Farrell), Dr. Bashir (Alexander Siddig), and others were inserted rather seamlessly into an episode that was shot 30 years prior. It was a novelty for "Star Trek," and one of the few times the franchise revisited its past in such a manner.

One of the great pleasures of the new season of "Star Trek: Picard" has been the introduction of Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), the hard-nosed commander of the U.S.S. Titan-a. While many of the previous captains on "Star Trek" have been approachable or at least diplomatic, Captain Shaw is an unapologetic jerkwad. Previously an engineer, Shaw prefers order and adheres to rules, refusing to bend them -- even a little bit -- for visiting dignitaries like Picard (Patrick Stewart). He inherited the Titan from Captain Riker (Jonathan Frakes), who left his vast collection of jazz records on the ship's computer. In what might amount to an act of terrorism, Captain Shaw deleted all of the Titan's jazz. He also disrespects his first officer, Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), and happily calls Starfleet security when Seven, Riker, and Picard hijack his ship. He is brusque and even rude. He is an awesome character.

Each "Star Trek" show is, despite its tendency to focus on starship and space station captains, an ensemble drama. Each series (the first two seasons of "Picard" notwithstanding) is about the workplace dynamic on board a space vessel, with characters of different backgrounds and personalities working together to solve crises. The characters may occasionally butt heads, but "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry (in)famously discouraged that sort of conflict, preferring to depict a future where everyone got along, or at least treated each other with professional respect.
The group dynamic of "Star Trek," however, occasionally led to a perhaps-unconscious reliance on certain archetypes. Each Trek show, for the most part, features Stalwart Captain, Approachable Guy, Sensitive Soul, Culture Shock Alien, The Muscle, The Broody Outsider, Impatient Weirdo, Nerdy Tech-Head, and Inexperienced Noob. These broad "types" could alternately be combined into a single character or spread among many, but one can...

Spinning out of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" expanded the iconic science fiction franchise into considerably darker and more morally ambiguous territory than its predecessors. Starring Avery Brooks as Captain Benjamin Sisko, the show took place on its eponymous Starfleet space station positioned by the planet Bajor and a wormhole leading to the Gamma Quadrant. As the series progressed, "DS9" would shift to longer-form storytelling as the installation became a focal point amidst the Starfleet and the Dominion's warfare.
With over 170 episodes across seven seasons, "DS9" had a memorable ensemble cast that pushed the final frontier into new directions that its successors thematically furthered, including "Star Trek: Voyager." From standalone character studies to emotionally searing tales of battle and sacrifice, "DS9" ran a wide gamut of themes and tones that redefined what "Star Trek" could and can be while earning a considerable amount of widespread acclaim.

The Season 1 finale of Shantaram will now be its series finale: Apple TV+ has canceled the Charlie Hunnam drama. The news of Shantaram’s demise hit Deadline on Thursday, December 15, the day before the season finale started streaming. Based on the bestselling 2003 novel of the same name by Gregory David Roberts, Shantaram starred Hunnam as Lin Ford, an escaped convict who starts working as a medical for the poor and neglected in 1980s Bombay and “finds unexpected love, connection, and courage on the long road to redemption.” That road brings Lin into contact with an “enigmatic and intriguing” woman named Karla, played by Antonia Desplat. “[He’s on a] collision course between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of gold,” Hunnam told TV Insider in October. “With Karla, it’s non-reciprocated initially, but a dramatic, wonderfully romantic relationship blossoms. Just prior to the season finale episode, which will be released tonight on AppleTV+, the show Shantaram starring Charlie Hunnam has been axed by the streaming service. Stantaram is based on the lengthy 900-plus page novel by Gregory David Roberts and had a huge production with the ambitious, epic scope of shooting across two continents. Both of which had been impacted by the Covid pandemic.
The series started filming its first season, but production came to a pause in February 2020 when the pandemic was taking shape. Since the show filmed in multiple countries, production was not able to resume until May 2021 for the remaining ten episodes of the season. Deadline reports that the show hadn’t quite taken off as much as the streaming service’s more popular titles, such as The Morning Show and Ted Lasso.

Charlie Hunnam's return to the Sons of Anarchy universe might happen sooner than you think.
Deadline reported this week that the star's TV comeback vehicle, Shantaram, has been canceled after just one season.
The cancellation comes just ahead of its first season finale.
No reason for the cancellation has been given, but the show hasn't reached the level of success as some of its Apple TV+ counterparts.
Many of the streaming services still keep viewership statistics under wraps, and the expansive nature of Shantaram certainly makes us think it was an expensive series to produce.
The show is described as "a hopeful cinematic love story coupled with a thrilling epic adventure that follows one man's journey to redemption through a country that changes his life."

Actor Charlie Hunnam-starrer series ‘Shantaram’ will not be returning for a second season.
Its Season 1 finale, released tomorrow, December 16, will serve as a series finale, reports ‘Variety’.
Based on the Gregory David Roberts’ epic, 900-plus-page novel, Shantaram was an ambitious, big-scope undertaking, shot across two continents, which was impacted by the pandemic.
The series had shot two episodes before pausing filming in late-February 2020. Because of its expansive nature requiring filming in multiple countries, the series did not resume production on the remaining 10 episodes until May 2021.
‘Shantaram’, which hasn’t generated the level of buzz that some of Apple TV+’s popular titles have, follows Lin Ford (Hunnam), who escapes a maximum-security Australian prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of 1980s Bombay, gets entangled with a local mafia boss and eventually uses his gun-running and counterfeiting skills to fight against the invading Russian troops in Afghanistan. Praise the prophets! "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is coming back in comic format for a 30th anniversary celebration mini-series that features all of your favorite characters, from Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) to Morn (Mark Allan Shepherd). Comic publisher Idw announced that they will be releasing a five part comic series called "The Dog of War," launching in April 2023. "The Dog of War" will serve as a "lost episode" set during the events of the beloved 1990s series, following the crew of the space station Deep Space Nine as they contend with their newest resident: a purebred Welsh Corgi named Latinum that Quark (Armin Shimerman) has procured for one of his many smuggling clients. The corgi isn't all that it seems, however, and its presence aboard Deep Space Nine could signal disaster for the entire quadrant.

One of the greatest missteps on the HBO hit series "Game of Thrones" was the show's handling of Dorne, the southernmost kingdom in Westeros. Characters were written out or underwritten, entire storylines disappeared in order to streamline the already sprawling cast, and some of the best bits of George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" saga were left behind.
Thankfully, one thing the series got right was casting Pedro Pascal as Prince Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne. Oberyn's time on the series was far too short, but at least we got to see (and hear) him brought to life by one of the most charismatic actors working today.
In a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" thread, Pascal answered fan questions and explained the accent he used as the Dornish prince. The accent itself isn't specific to any country or region in our world, but sounds sort...

(Welcome to Yesterday's Enterprises, a series where we explore every corner of the vast "Star Trek" universe. In this edition: a tribute to Dr. Phlox, one of the all-time-great "Trek" characters.)
For any neophytes that may be reading, the uniforms on "Star Trek" are colored to coordinate with their department. On the original series, those who are on the command track wear gold uniforms. Those in engineering or security wear red, and those involved with medicine or the sciences wear blue. For reasons that have never been adequately, canonically explained, gold and red switched functions at the start of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The colored uniforms not only offer a very basic visual variety to the show -- how dull if every single character wore the same clothes -- but also lent a vital sense of structure to "Star Trek." If you enjoy watching talented actors situated in foreign lands, drenched in cosmetically applied sweat, opining in borderline-comical accents about second chances, Apple TV+’s Shantaram is likely to be your favorite new show of the fall.
Breathlessly awaited for nearly two decades by countless people who bought Gregory David Roberts’ epic tome to read on an airplane but never quite finished it, Shantaram has the insufferable trappings of yet another white savior story about a damaged guy whose quest for self-actualization leads him to an exotic place where superficial lessons about a previously unknown spiritual system help him and basically nobody else around him. Ok, it doesn’t just have the trappings of one of those stories. It is one of those stories.

Plot: Based on the internationally best-selling novel by Gregory David Roberts, “Shantaram” follows a fugitive named Lin Ford looking to get lost in vibrant and chaotic 1980s Bombay. Alone in an unfamiliar city, Lin struggles to avoid the trouble he’s running from in this new place. After falling for an enigmatic and intriguing woman named Karla, Lin must choose between freedom or love and the complications that come with it.
Review: Since its publication in 2003, Shantaram has been in various states of development with everyone from Johnny Depp and Peter Weir to Mira Nair and Joel Egerton involved. Repurposed from a feature film to a series in 2018 by Apple as one of their first international productions. Led by Charlie Hunnam in his first series role since the end of Sons of Anarchy, Shantaram has gone through a few showrunners and the Covid-19 pandemic before finally making it to screens this month.

“Bombay felt exhilaratingly free, a place where everyone started new.” That’s Lin Ford, played by Charlie Hunnam, speaking to us in voice-over about the city where he hopes to begin again. Today known as Mumbai, the Indian metropolis is many things; on “Shantaram,” it’s the staging ground for a white fugitive to lose and find himself. It’s that dynamic that tends to frustrate over the course of a long season.
Based on the novel by Gregory David Roberts and executive produced by Steve Lightfoot, “Shantaram” is set in the 1980s, in the wake of Lin’s prison break. Making his way out of an Australian penal institution in the pilot episode, Lin, a recovering heroin addict, seeks to disappear into a city of millions before, potentially, moving on, but is perpetually drawn toward an intriguing, possibly amoral woman named Karla (Antonia Desplat). Sons of Anarchy seemingly closed the book on Jax Teller with its 2014 series finale, but Charlie Hunnam is not ruling out a return to that world in some capacity.
The franchise created by Kurt Sutter remains alive and kicking, thanks to Mayans M.C., which recently secured a pickup for Season 5.
If you watch Sons of Anarchy online, you know Jax Teller died in the series finale, but the actor is working on ways to bring the character back.
"Since you asked, I have an idea that I’m exploring in its infancy where that could be a possibility," he told Access Hollywood while promoting his new Apple TV+ series Shantaram.
"It would be something that I would be incredibly excited about, so we’re sort of, like I said, in the infancy of exploring the viability of the idea," he said.

In the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Hear All, Trust Nothing," the U.S.S. Cerritos visits Deep Space Nine, the space station featured in the 1993 "Star Trek" series of the same name. The last audiences had seen of the station was in the final episode of "Deep Space Nine," which aired in 1999. In the timeline of "Star Trek," however, only about seven or eight years had passed since that episode ("DS9" left off in 2375 and "Lower Decks" is currently in 2382 or 2383), meaning the station would look more or less familiar to fans. The Promenade is still in business, Morn is still drinking at Quark's, and some familiar characters are still living there. Returning to reprise their roles are Armin Shimerman as Quark and Nana Visitor as Col. Kira Nerys.
Col. Kira, like so much of "Deep Space Nine," was a unique creation in "Star Trek.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" and the series finale of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
The latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Hear All, Trust Nothing," sees the U.S.S. Cerritos being called -- at the last minute -- to oversee a diplomatic mission with a species from the Gamma Quadrant. The negotiations involve a generous gift from the Federation -- many, many kegs of liquor -- and takes place on Deep Space Nine, a space station that, Trekkies know, had its very own seven-year-long TV series from 1993 to 1999.
As briefly as possible: "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" was set aboard a station that was built by the fascistic, militant Cardassians while they aggressively occupied Bajor, the planet below. When the Cardassian regime fell, the Bajorans took control of the station along with a retinue of Starfleet officers assigned to oversee Bajor's reconstruction.

Characters on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" frequently like to speak in code or drop hints rather than get directly to the point, so let's be clear here. When it comes to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," worst is a highly relative term. In many, many ways, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is the best "Star Trek." While it could never break the same ground as the original (and had a few clunker episodes due to its longevity and exhausted writers), "Deep Space Nine" tells the best story, has the best overall cast of characters, and its best episodes are more plentiful than those of most of its franchise brethren. Regularly dealing with moral compromises, no-win scenarios, and cultural differences that cannot always be bridged, it's the kind of show that might have dismayed original "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, who wanted the future of humanity to look perennially optimistic.

The central joke of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is that a career in Starfleet, however dazzling on the page, is still full of petty, garbage jobs that no one necessarily wants. In the fifth episode of season 3 of "Lower Decks" -- called "Reflections" -- Ensigns Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) are tasked with working a Starfleet recruitment booth at a futuristic jobs bazaar. Standing under a 10'-by-10' sunshade emblazoned with Starfleet logos, Boimler and Mariner have to make desperate, impassioned pitches to casual passersby that Starfleet is the bee's knees. They have the bad luck of being stationed right next to a vaguely criminal -- and ultra-cool -- adventuring archeologist booth.
The idea that Starfleet would need a military recruitment booth at a jobs fair is simultaneously logical and a little sad. Surely Starfleet would want to get the word out about what kind of lifestyle they offer,...

Apple TV+ just released the official trailer for Shantaram, a new drama based on Gregory David Roberts’ bestselling book and starring Charlie Hunnam. The new trailer was accompanied by a batch of photos from the 12-episode season which premieres on October 14, 2022.
Apple TV+ will air the first three episodes on October 14th followed by new episodes on subsequent Fridays. The season will wrap up on December 16, 2022.
Charlie Hunnam says that although the first photo Apple TV+ released from Shantaram featured him riding a motorcycle, this series has nothing else in common with Sons of Anarchy. And his character, Lin Ford, is dramatically different from Jax Teller.
