A feel-good British comedy in the vein of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, the new film Finding Your Feet finds its own feet by presenting light and engaging fare employing veteran English actors in ways we rarely get to see them on the big screen. As I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), in these dark times this is the kind of hopeful, mature entertainment that just might drag older adult audiences out to the movies.
Exotic Marigold Hotel and its 2015 sequel proved there was a sizable worldwide crowd out there craving this kind of thing, and though it breaks no new ground, this Richard Loncraine-directed piece fits the bill nicely and gives the wondrous Imelda Staunton a lovely leading role in which she proves again her mettle as one of our best.

Imelda Staunton and Celia Imrie play sisters forced to live under the same roof in a feelgood but frustrating comedy
Here’s another gentle golden-years Britcom about feisty bus-pass recipients sticking two fingers up at pompous types of all ages: a Werther’s Unoriginal. The Marigold Hotel cast headed off for India; this film is set mostly in overcast Britain but our heroes here get a weekend break in Rome.
The lineup is great. Imelda Staunton plays Sandra, a woman who has suppressed her natural joie de vivre for a lifetime to be married to complacent police chief Mike (John Sessions). When that marriage hits the buffers, Sandra has to go and live with her hippyish, leftish sister Bif (Celia Imrie). Gradually she learns to be less uptight, less angry. She even goes along to Bif’s dance club and remembers that she herself used to be a bit of...

Finally, a movie for the whole family. Grab your mom and get ready for “Finding Your Feet,” a romantic comedy starring Academy Award nominee Imelda Staunton, Timothy Spall, and Celie Imrie from “Wimbledon” director Richard Loncraine. In the vein of “Calender Girls” or “Something’s Gotta Give,” “Finding Your Feet” is sure to delight older audiences whose attentions may be flagging amidst Oscar season. Jam-packed with some of the UK’s finest talents, and with a heartwarming but familiar story of a woman learning to live and let go, “Finding Your Feet” looks like the kind of film they just don’t make anymore.

"We each have our duties in this life..." A trailer has debuted online for an indie drama called The Silent Storm, set on a remote Scottish island telling the story of a marriage falling apart helped by the arrival of a troubled young boy. Damian Lewis stars as a local minister and Andrea Riseborough plays his wife. I'm not sure. The full cast includes Ross Anderson, Kate Dickie, Eric Robertson, and John Sessions. This actually looks solid, with some great cinematography and a strong story of love and chaos. Might be worth catching? Take a look. Here's the official trailer for Corinna McFarlane's The Silent Storm, found on YouTube (via The Playlist): On a wild and remote Scottish island,...

2016 has gotten off to a brutal start for great British entertainers. As the world gets over the death of David Bowie a few days ago, it has been set in shock again as acting legend Alan Rickman has died in London.
Rickman had been suffering from cancer and his death was confirmed on Thursday by his family. It's the worst kind of coincidence - Bowie and Rickman were 69 years old and passed after battling cancer, and a week before that British musician Lemmy also passed away from cancer just days after turning 70.
Rickman's distinct features and immediately identifiable diction were admired by generations of actors and made him synonymous with playing antagonists - something he famously wasn't a fan of as he preferred to play the dashing leading man role which he did manage to do in some of his work.

Disney has released new photos from a couple of the studio's highly-anticipated upcoming films, Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book and James Bobin's Alice Through the Looking Glass. I'm definitely more excited about The Jungle Book than I am about the Alice in Wonderland sequel, but I'll still end up seeing both because that's what I do!
The Jungle Book is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo...

We're Doomed: The Dad's Army Story is touching, humorous and ultimately heartwarming piece of television...
New Dad’s Army casts are like buses: you wait ages for one to come along, and then when two turn up at once they don’t like it up ‘em. While it’s never been far from the public consciousness, the sitcom about the Home Guard of Walmington-on-Sea seems to have experienced a surge in popularity over the last few years, with repeats on BBC Two having become a Saturday night staple - only a few weeks ago, it was the programme with the highest Appreciation Index for the whole of a Saturday which included Strictly, The X Factor, I’m A Celeb and the Doctor Who finale. And with the new Dad’s Army film starring Toby Jones and Bill Nighy set for release in February, it’s the perfect...

The conventions of the gangster movie are rigidly defined, critic Robert Warshow observed in a famous 1948 essay. At heart is the character arc of the socially deviant protagonist, whether Rico Bandello, Tony Montana, or Michael Corleone: “a steady upward progress followed by a very precipitate fall.”
In Brian Helgeland’s excellent biopic “Legend” (2015), currently playing in limited theatrical release, the twin brothers Reggie and Ronnie Kray (Tom Hardy, in a dual role) are already on the upward curve of Warshow’s character arc in the 1960s London underworld as the film begins. “Reggie was a gangster prince of the East End,” Reggie’s future wife Frances (Emily Browning) muses in voiceover. “Ronnie was a one-man mob.” In the first scene, the dapper Reggie derisively brings tea to two rumpled detectives who are staking him out, the senior of whom, Inspector Nipper Read (Christopher Eccleston), is determined to bring him down.

The fund will target productions that bring benefits to the Scottish film sector and economy.
In what Creative Scotland’s Director of Film & Media, Natalie Usher, is describing as “a really fantastic offering,” the new Scottish $2.7m (£1.75m) Production Growth Fund (Pgf) has launched and is open for applications today.
“It is a fund that will be attractive to feature film and high-end TV drama productions that will be accessing the UK tax credits,” Usher told ScreenDaily.
“What we are trying to do is bring bigger productions here and to hold on to productions from Scottish-based producers who might otherwise go to other nations or parts of the UK.”
Investments from the Pgf are non-recoupable and will reward productions that bring benefits to the Scottish film sector and economy.
A total of £750,000 is available for the period until March 31 2016 and a further £1m is earmarked for 2016/17.

In 1947, the world famous sleuth has retired to a remote Sussex farmhouse, living in relative anonymity with only his housekeeper Mrs Munro and her young son Roger for company. Cantankerous, demanding and frustrated with the mis-representation of him in Watson’s best-selling novels, he diverts his attention to an unsolved case. As the mystery deepens, Sherlock tries desperately to recall the events of 30 years ago that ultimately led to his retirement.
I had high hopes for Mr. Holmes. After all, not only does the film star Ian McKellan in the central role but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character is, typically, guaranteed to provide some intriguing crime-solving action. Not so here.

Captain Jack Harkness returns for Big Finish's audio adventure Torchwood: The Conspiracy. Here's the first clip of him back in action...
While he may not be getting a televised comeback like River Song (for the time being), we're still very excited about Captain Jack Harkness' return to the world of Doctor Who. Well, the world of its anagram spin-off, Torchwood, that is.
John Barrowman has reprised his iconic coat-wearing role for a new audio adventure titled The Conspiracy. Here's the synopsis...
“Captain Jack Harkness has always had his suspicions about the Committee. And now Wilson is also talking about the Committee. Apparently the world really is under the control of alien lizards. That’s what Wilson says. People have died, disasters have been staged, the suspicious have disappeared. It’s outrageous. Only Jack knows that Wilson is right. The Committee has arrived.”
And here, as promised, is the first...

Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.
To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.

Ben Bradlee movies: From 'All the President's Men' to 'Born Yesterday' (photo: Jason Robards as 'The Washington Post' executive editor Ben Bradlee in 'All the President's Men') Former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee aka Benjamin C. Don't you find that some days that there are tasks that you meant to do but never got round to doing? Hoovering, washing up and writing thank you cards for Christmases and birthdays. They all tend to get lumped to the back of the brain in the pile of chores that's as big as a hippopotamus.
Even The Doctor finds that there are some things that are long overdue. Places to go. People to meet. When you're a busy Time Lord saving planets all the time, the little things tend to get overlooked. So having mentioned an outer space Orient Express at the end of The Big Bang, The Doctor's been somewhat distracted ever since. What with killer astronauts, Trenzalore and regeneration taking up most of The Doctor's time, it's little wonder that it's taken him until now to get round to taking Clara along for one last fling aboard the Tardis.

There’s one of two things you can be almost guaranteed of when you see a story that takes place on a train – romance, or a murder.
Mummy On The Orient Express
By Jamie Mathieson
Directed by Paul Wilmshurst
As a farewell fling, The Doctor takes Clara on a trip aboard the Orient Express in space, exactingly copied from the original, except for the bit about being spaceworthy. It becomes quickly apparent that all is not well on the craft – a mysterious unseen beast is killing people exactly 66 seconds after the victim sees it – and no one else does. It turns out this particular journey is a massive two-fold trap – the ship is filled with scientists versed in areas of research that pertain to the beast, and are pressed into service to capture it, by any means necessary.
The Doctor quickly joins the press gang, understanding that the only way...
