Merrily We Roll Along, the hit Broadway revival of the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, has recouped its $12 million capitalization six months after beginning performances, producers announced today.
The musical, which opened to rave reviews last October 10 after beginning previews September 19, has broken house records at the Hudson Theatre seven times during its run, according to producers Sonia Friedman Productions, David Babani, Patrick Catullo and Jeff Romley.
Extended twice during the limited engagement, Merrily, directed by Maria Friedman, must close as previously announced on Sunday, July 7, producers said. The revival will have played 20 previews and 312 regular performances.
In addition to the headlining trio, Merrily, with music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by Furth, features Krystal Joy Brown, Katie Rose Clarke and Reg Rogers among the principal cast.

What a difference 40 years makes. After opening to pans and a run of only 16 official performances in 1981, Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical “Merrily We Roll Along” has been remounted on Broadway for the very first time. Maria Friedman has stepped into the director role once occupied by Sondheim’s frequent collaborator Hal Prince — “Merrily” was their first flop after an impressive string of successful shows in the 70s. The revival opened on Oct. 10 at the Hudson Theatre for a run slated to end in March.
“Merrily” boasts marquee names Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. The trio play Franklin Shepard, Mary Flynn, and Charley Kringas, respectively, the three creatives at the heart of the musical that’s told in reverse over the course of 20+ years. It begins in a moment of personal and professional disillusionment and estrangement and unspools to a simpler, earlier time when their friendships...

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about the Season 8 finale of NBC’s The Blacklist.
There is a saying in Russian, “Не бойся начала, а берегись конца,” which roughly translates as “Don’t be afraid of the beginning but look out for the end.” The Season 8 finale of NBC’s The Blacklist, whose two parts were named “Nachalo” and “Konets”, The Beginning/Начало and The End/Конец in Russian, lived up to that with a promising “Nachalo” and a heartbreaking “Konets,” capped by the death of one of the show’s main characters, Megan Boone’s Elizabeth “Liz” Keen. Tonight’s closer marked the final appearance on the show for Boone who has been the female lead of The Blacklist opposite James Spader for eight seasons.
In “Nachalo”, Raymond “Red” Reddington (Spader) took Liz (Boone) to the home base of his spy operation in Latvia to give her answers about her past.

This NOS4A2 review contains spoilers.
NOS4A2 Season 2 Episode 3
One thing that NOS4A2 did between seasons is tinker with its special effects. For whatever reason, Charlie Manx as an old man looks a little better than he did the previous season.
All across the board, it seems, the special effects seem to be coming across the screen better, from the blood and guts of previous episodes to things like the scarred-up ghost living in the Manx house on the outskirts of the Manx inscape, just outside the gates of Christmasland.
However, one effect that doesn’t hold up when seen frequently is the razor-sharp teeth of the children keeping Millie company and eating whatever drifters Charlie brings home. When they just show up, it looks fine. A child flashes a creepy, fanged smile while sitting in the back seat of the Wraith? Perfect. Millie Manx tries to emote with a mouth full of digitally enhanced dentures?...

Last week, Tootsie joined Broadway’s million dollar club – the choice group of productions that break the $1 million mark in weekly box office. Along with 11 Tony Award nominations and a star-making turn by lead actor Santino Fontana, the musical adaptation of the 1982 film comedy starring Dustin Hoffman can, in retrospect, seem like a no-brainer, the type of Broadway success that complainers complain about when they gripe over Hollywood pedigrees.
But take a closer look at To Kill A Mockingbird, Network, Pretty Woman, Beetlejuice and Tootsie, and what jumps out are their differences, specifically their varying approaches to their source material. Mockingbird went meta, Network post-modern high tech. Pretty Woman could have benefited from less respect for its celluloid self, Beetlejuice from more.
Of the musicals, Tootsie found the sweetest balance between old and new, all the more surprising given what would seem, at first consideration, a storyline and worldview best left to the ’80s.

We’ve all had that moment of genius, usually while getting stuck on TCM, when the brilliant idea reveals itself to us: This film really deserves a remake, an update stripped of archaic notions or bad hair and polished to a shiny modern sheen. Some movies all but demand it. Tootsie isn’t one. Sydney Pollack’s 1982 film starring Dustin Hoffman seems so perfectly of its time – right down to the blissful ignorance of its unexamined mansplaining – that any fiddling would seem as unnecessary as spray tan on a president.
You’ll have just enough time during the false-start opening moments of director Scott Ellis’ wonderful new Tootsie to ponder such things, and then the musical and its star Santino Fontana grab hold and don’t let go. It’s not without a few runs in its stockings, but this Tootsie is a delight, a not-quite-blind date that plays out...

Let’s hear it for Tootsie, the laugh-out-loud funniest musical of the Broadway season. Yes, it’s another tune-filled spin on a hit movie — Pretty Woman, King Kong, the list goes on. But this one is actually good — hell, better than good, it’s musical-comedy heaven. Using the beloved 1982 movie with Dustin Hoffman as a launching pad, the singing-dancing Tootsie still features an unemployed asshole of an actor who has to dress up as a woman to land a part. But the film’s casual sexism (it...

With his buoyant air of all-American optimism and innate decency, Denzel Washington is well cast (by helmer George C. Wolfe) as Hickey, the long-awaited bearer of false hope, comforting lies, and unlimited free booze to the washed-up losers who patronize Harry Hope’s no-hope saloon. When the thesp sweeps down the aisle and onto the stage wearing a snazzy suit and a 100-watt smile, the whole theater warms up.
The huge ensemble cast (19 strong) presents a cross-section of some of the best character actors in the business. At center stage is the saloon keeper Harry Hope, played with worn-out Irish dignity and a bit of a warm brogue by Colm Meaney, who generously treats his bedraggled patrons to free drinks and lets them sleep it off in their chairs.
It’s 1912 in New York City, a hard place to survive when you’re down and out. But this shabby neighborhood...

Well before Denzel Washington’s glad-handing salesman Hickey makes his fateful arrival in the dive bar of George C. Wolfe’s strong new Broadway staging of The Iceman Cometh, Eugene O’Neill’s collection of pipe-dreaming drunkards arrange themselves across their end-of-the-line cafe as if modeling for Leonardo’s “The Last Supper.”
All that’s missing is a savior.
Truth be told, O’Neill’s rum-bums need their messiah a lot more than this production does: Though certainly built around mega-star Washington, this Iceman is so well-cast and performed by, among others, David Morse, Bill Irwin and Tammy Blanchard, that Washington’s late, happy-dance entrance almost seems a worry. Anything Elsa: Radford’s Remake Rough Around the Edges
English director Michael Radford, still best known for earlier works 1984 (1984) and the critical darling Il Postino (1994), arrives with his most notable effort since that Demi Moore diamond heist flick, Flawless (2007) with a remake of Argentinean director Marcos Carnevale’s 2005 film, Elsa & Fred. Featuring two iconic American stars in this rehashed material gains Radford a lot of leverage in what’s otherwise a rather feeble claptrap of mounting cliché, though it will indubitably find a strong herd of champions from older audience members hungry for mainstream-minded cinematic vehicles aimed at their sensibilities and starring familiar faces.
In tax-break friendly New Orleans, octogenarian Fred (Christopher Plummer) has recently lost his wife, and is aggravated this his daughter Lydia (Marcia Gay Harden) has taken it upon herself, and with the help of her smarmy husband (Chris Noth), to relocate him to a smaller apartment.

A review of tonight's "Boardwalk Empire" coming up just as soon as I catch you in a good mood... "So I did one thing for him, and then another..." -Lindsay Though we have one episode of the series to go, "Friendless Child" essentially brings the story of Nucky Thompson's empire to a close. He gives it all away — save maybe whatever he's doing with Margaret and the Mayflower Grain stock — to Luciano and Lansky, whose takeover of crime in New York and New Jersey is complete, even as they have bigger plans to make organized crime be truly organized on a national scale(*). The war's over, Nucky conceded utterly — choosing to save Willie over continuing a fight he'd likely lose anyway — and that's the show, right? A boardwalk empire falls, and you roll credits. (*) Probably the biggest casualty of the decision to end the show now — and skip over...

Joining the cast of Michael Radford's remake of "Elsa & Fred," starring Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer, are Marcia Gay Harden, Chris Noth, Jared Gilman, James Brolin, George Segal, Wendell Pierce, Reg Rogers, and Erika Alexander. The film just kicked off production in New Orleans. The film is a remake of the 2005 Spanish-Argentine romantic comedy from director Marcos Carnevale, which was also adapted into a stage play. MacLaine plays a gregarious and lively New Orleans retiree, and Plummer will be the straight-laced widower that moves into her apartment, causing conflict as she won't leave him alone. The film, which raised funds at the Afm, will also shoot in Rome. During Afm, producer Ed Saxon said: "I'm pinching myself; as getting the chance to work with Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, and Michael Radford is a producer's dream come true." He is producing alongside Nicolas Veinberg, Matthias Ehrenberg, Ricardo...

Attila original story from Nicholas Schoenfeld appeals to Warners. Newcomer Nicholas Schoenfeld's original pitch for an origin story about Attila, leader of the huns from 434 until his death in 453 on his wedding night, has sold to Warner Bros. Deadline reports the tone of Attila is similar to Dracula Year Zero, scripted by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, Schoenfeld’s mentors. The last Attila I saw was TV's Attila the Hun with Gerard Butler, Powers Boothe, Simmone Jade Mackinnon, Reg Rogers, Alice Krige, Pauline Lynch, Steven Berkoff and Andrew Pleavin starring. A none-too-shabby affair. Still, one wonders if this will spark or end up in the 300-styled plague of offshoots, including the recent and appalling Immortals.

You know you are in David Mamet's world when the expletives fly rapid fire, one distasteful zinger after another, breaking every taboo. You laugh, and hearing the rhythms, you call it poetry. The title Romance may suggest a candlelit evening, but here that candle may be a stick of dynamite up our cultural ass. Four tight scenes performed in an hour and a half, Romance features a fine ensemble: Richard Kind, Darrell Hammond, Chris Bauer, Matt McGrath, Reg Rogers, Joey Slotnick and Joe Pallister, expertly directed by Lisa Peterson. Like the language, time zings by. Mamet's writing has never been this funny, or have I missed something in recent productions? Race seems more an acted out essay on that subject, Oleanna too, on the subject of sexual harassment to the point of who is manipulating whom. Romance adds slapstick and shtick...

The revival of the George Kaufman-Edna Ferber comedy The Royal Family is sheer perfection. A charming send-up of the illustrious Barrymores, theatrical and film stars of their day, this 1927 play is a charmer from start to finish. Set in a gorgeously designed East Side townhouse, the cast, particularly Rosemary Harris as matriarch Fanny Cavendish, Jan Maxwell as her talented daughter Julie, and Reg Rogers as the dashing, over-the-top brother, are heaven-sent. Parody never looked -- or sounded -- so exquisite. Now at the Samuel Friedman, The Royal Family is a reminder of how wonderful revivals can be -- especially when they are laced with zippy one-liners, lively direction and accompanied by a smart ensemble outfitted in beautifully rendered costumes. The play is a paean to acting and out-sized egos. A highly physical three-act, this eccentric, narcissistic clan is at home in...
