Netflix generates more contemporary content than anyone, but they’re dipping into the past to curate the great movies from the ’70s. These are the films that people like myself discovered as kids in the early days of when HBO premiered on cable. Bravo, I say. Here’s the preliminary list.

1974 was quite a year for cinema; 50 years later, Netflix (of all places) is celebrating the golden jubilee.
In recognition of the anniversary, the streamer on Wednesday launched a new, dedicated content row (and direct URL link) with the first films being honored under its new “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection” banner. Each of the 14 films came to Netflix this month by way of Warner Bros., Paramount, or Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.
The 1974 collection includes “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Black Belt Jones,” “Blazing Saddles,” “California Split,” “Chinatown,” “The Conversation,” “Death Wish,” “The Gambler,” “The Great Gatsby,” “It’s Alive,” “The Little Prince,” “The Lords of Flatbush,” “The Parallax View,” and “The Street Fighter” (“Gekitotsu! Satsujin ken”).
Netflix doesn’t plan to stop with disco’s heyday. In April, the streaming service will do the same for films from 1984 (turning 40); July will celebrate 1994 movies (turning 30); and in October...

Locked and loaded with a decent screenplay, Michael Winner and Charles Bronson acquit themselves well in this brutal 1974 hit that launched a decade’s worth of nasty vigilante movies. The lynch-mob formula presents crimes so awful that the audience demands violent retribution. The shock is that this incitement to ‘fight back’ is not direct right-wing propaganda — vigilantism is glamorized but not endorsed. A fine supporting cast includes Vincent Gardenia, Steven Keats and unexpected treats like Olympia Dukakis and Jeff Goldblum. “Fill your hand!”

Exclusive: Sam Mendes has picked Johnny Flynn, Tuppence Middleton and Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss to portray legendary stars Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and John Gielgud in The Motive and the Cue, a mouth-watering new play by Jack Thorne that explores how acting giants Burton and Gielgud staged Hamlet on Broadway in 1964.
Burton, newly wed to Taylor after their affair on the set of epic film Cleopatra, signed on to play the Danish prince in a fabled production directed by Gielgud in New York.
On opening night in April, 1964, scores of police hemmed in crowds who were as eager to catch a glimpse of Taylor entering the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre as they were to see her husband as the depressed Dane.

Exclusive: Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (1917) has linked up with acclaimed His Dark Materials writer Jack Thorne on a new project for the stage that will explore how legendary acting figures Richard Burton and John Gielgud put Hamlet on Broadway in 1964, with a little help from Elizabeth Taylor.
The result of two years of writing and workshops is a Thorne-penned drama called The Motive and the Cue, which Mendes will direct on the UK National Theatre’s Lyttelton stage in Spring 2023. With such heavyweights attached, it already has the weight and feel of a landmark production.
The high profile show is a joint production between the National Theatre and Neal Street Productions, the All3Media-owned indie founded nearly 20 years ago by Mendes with TV and film producer Pippa Harris and Caro Newling, who runs its theater division. George Pal’s ill-fated ‘future docu’ followup to Destination Moon still stirs the imagination, rendering in vivid Technicolor the visionary images that amazed us in Chesley Bonestell’s paintings about space travel. We still love the movie even if we want to shove the script and whoever approved it out an airlock without a space helmet. It’s fun to pick it apart, but when Van Cleave’s trilling ‘spacey’ music plays we know we’re back in 1950s Sci-fi Nirvana, anticipating a techno-future of space marvels. [Imprint] gives the movie a classy Blu-ray showcase.

John Dexter directed this story about at a disaffected young cabbie, an older but no wiser incarnation of The Graduate’s Benjamin Braddock. Singer-actor Jordon Christopher plays Jonathan, the misanthrope who bullies his fares and any pigeons that get under foot. Jill O’Hara plays his sometime girlfriend and the terrific supporting cast includes William Redfield and Lois Nettleton. Melba Moore and a pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone show up on the sidelines.

Marlon Brando had few if any hits in the 1960s, but this wartime spy picture is a not-bad thriller with some tense moments. Both Brando and Yul Brynner have been blackmailed into a risky mission as spy and sea captain; they’re more than a little disillusioned to find themselves transporting a boatload of Nazis and political prisoners headed back to Germany. Persecuted victim Janet Margolin is beyond caring — she’s a victim on a voyage of the damned.

Filtered through her experience as an unequalled comic performer, writer-director Elaine May scores a bulls-eye with this grossly underappreciated gem, fashioned in a style that could be called ‘black comedy lite.’ And that’s the release version mangled by the producer. Deadline reports that director Shawn Levy has his eye on Hugh Jackman to star in Fox's remake of Richard Fleischer's 1966 'Fantastic Voyage,' a film that has encountered some obstacles to production.
First Darren Aronofsky dropped out as director, then there were script issues, and finally the earthquake and tsunami in Japan -- where the story is set -- pushed back production.
The film -- in which a group of doctors in a submarine are miniaturized and injected into a dying man's body to travel through his arteries to find and fix a deadly blood clot -- is being produced by James Cameron as a 3D tentpole.
The original film starred Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch, Edmond O'Brien, Donald Pleasance, Arthur O'Connell, William Redfield and Arthur Kennedy, and had some pretty spectacular effects for its time. This one, of course, will be all-cgi once the...

Flix Picks [1] is a new semi-regular feature that explores the depths of my Netflix queue and allows me the chance to catch up with some older films that I’ve not yet seen. When Ben Affleck wrote about his favorite heist films [2] earlier this month, he positioned The Friends of Eddie Coyle at the top of his list. That movie, while relatively lesser-known, has received some attention lately due to the death of its director, Peter Yates, and a new DVD/Blu-ray release through Criterion. It’s gritty, violent, and you can easily see the influence it had on Affleck’s latest film, The Town. The combination of Yates’ death and Affleck’s list led me to view another heist film recently called The Hot Rock, starring Robert Redford. It’s another Peter Yates film released just a year prior to Eddie Coyle which throws comedy into the mix as opposed to hardened realism.

The phrase “timeless classic” is often overused to the point of being cliché. However, when you’re presented with a film like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, where the white wall setting of a mental institution stands unaffected by time, the word timeless is easily applicable. Is the film a classic? Consider the roster of talent: Jack Nicholson, William Redfield, Brad Dourif, Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd. Names like Nicholson, DeVito and Lloyd are now household names. But, in 1975, when the film was originally released these actors were still making their way in Hollywood and on Broadway. DeVito is barely recognizable Martini, while a younger Lloyd looks still looks like Dr. Brown in Back to the Future. The Ultimate Collector’s Edition presents the film in pristine 1080p. In HD the film continues to hold true to the phrase “timeless classic” thanks to brilliant acting, while several included...

Director James Cameron has confirmed he will be producing a 3D remake of "Fantastic Voyage" for 20th Century Fox, graphically updating the 1966 science fiction feature.
