Sunny Deol & Rishi Kapoor Rewrote Darr’s ‘Cheat’ History For Damini But Tables Turned! (Picture Credit: YouTube)
We all know Sunny Deol and his famous tale of getting cheated upon by Yash Chopra, who promised Sunny to be the hero of Darr but made the film all about Shah Rukh Khan and presented it as an anti-hero film. However, good things happen to honest souls.
So, in a very karmic sort of way, Sunny Paaji got all the attention and his due as the hero in a film that changed the way his career was proceeding. And the film where everyone thought that the Gadar actor’s casting was a disastrous choice.
Sunny Deol was the supporting lead for Rajkumar Santoshi’s Damini. The duo had previously worked together in Ghayal, and when Santoshi was making Damini, Sunny was not the obvious choice. In fact, Om Puri was the original...

Bhakshak (Netflix)
Starring Bhumi Pednekar, Sanjay Mishra, Aditya Srivastava, Sai Tamhankar
Directed by Pulkit
From its prologue where a young girl is brutalized and then left to die, to its closing monologue where investigative journalist Vaishali Singh looks straight into the camera and asks us if we have lost all compassion… Bhakshak resonates with the corruption and brutality of our times.
Bhakshak is set in a hell-house camouflaged as a shelter home in Munnawarnagar, a thinly veiled reference to the shocking gruesome crime in Muzaffarpur that had shaken the nation’s collective conscience in 2018. But what did we do? Did we go beyond out tsk-tsks in our living rooms?
Pulkit’s film does much more than make polite noises. It is a film of smothered shrieks and chilling recriminations. It is partly a true-crime thriller that Costa-Gavras would approve of, and partly a severe docu-dramatized condemnation of our socio-political reality...

New Delhi, Aug 29 (Ians) Actor Vipin Sharma, who is enjoying the response to his recently released black comedy series, ‘Guns & Gulaabs’, has looked back on what it was like working with late co-star Satish Kaushik in the series, saying the latter was full of life, and he always felt at ease working with him.
Reminiscing about Satish Kaushik, Vipin said, “When we were in the National School of Drama, we used to hear about our seniors who moved to Bombay to work in films. We felt safe knowing we had a network of people to turn to if and when we decided to move to the city to pursue acting. Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri were a few such names, but there was another name we heard who wasn’t acting but was assisting filmmakers. That was Satish Kaushik ji.”

The Wolf episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
If anybody ever had the acting chops in the 90s to convincingly play a publisher who gets bitten by a werewolf and then slowly starts to become one himself, it’s Jack Nicholson. This must have been exactly what producers Douglas Wick and Neal A. Machlis were thinking when casting their 1994 romantic horror movie and who better than the guy that convincingly played unhinged characters previously in both One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Shining? His past work as an actor was already impressive enough and his distinctive features and natural charm meant that he was perfect for the role. Around the turn of the century, modern reimaginings of Shakespeare had reached a fever pitch. Audiences were rediscovering the Bard's work through a string of stylish Hollywood films ranging from Baz Luhrmann's bombastic “Romeo + Juliet” to Michael Almereyda's gen-x-courting “Hamlet” to fun teen comedies like “10 Things I Hate About You.” It wasn't long before the trend reached the Indian film industry, which had previously produced only a small selection of Shakespeare adaptations. The charge was led by Vishal Bhardwaj, who received widespread acclaim for 2003's “Maqbool,” his violent take on “Macbeth” featuring Irrfan Khan in the lead role. Transposing the Scottish Play's power struggles to 21st-century Mumbai, Bhardwaj takes a haunting approach to the material, leaning into the bloodshed while playing with the supernatural moodiness and psychological torment of its protagonist. Bhardwaj would continue his Shakespeare trilogy with “Omkara” (“Othello”) in 2006 and “Haider” (“Hamlet”) in 2014, both...

New Delhi, Aug 12 (Ians) The cult classic ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ which was released four decades ago, in 1983, stands as an enduring testament to the power of satire and humour, coupled with social commentary on corruption and media, in the Indian cinema.
Directed by Kundan Shah, and starring an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah, late Satish Kaushik, Bhakti Barve and Neena Gupta, the movie was a dark satire on the rampant corruption in Indian politics, bureaucracy, news media and business.
It still remains a timeless classic because of its razor-sharp wit and incisive take on corruption, politics, and societal hypocrisy.
Produced by National Film Development Corporation of India (Nfdc), the film’s narrative revolves around the misadventures of two bumbling photographers, Vinod Chopra (played by Naseeruddin), and Sudhir Mishra (played by Ravi).

James McAvoy has said that two authors have said he was miscast in adaptations of their work.
In a new interview, the actor, 43, revealed that not all writers that he has worked with have been happy to see him cast in film or TV adaptations of their work.
McAvoy stars as Asriel in the BBC adaptation of Philip Pullman’s books His Dark Materials. Season four will be released on 18 December.
Speaking ahead of the fourth season’s release, McAvoy told The Guardian that he had never spoken to Pullman because he was worried the actor would say: ‘“Hmmm, you’re not really my Asriel!’”
McAvoy went on to say: “I’ve had that with a writer, and it’s just not nice. I’ve had that with two writers, actually.”
Asked for the names of which authors disapproved of casting, McAvoy said it was not Irvine Welsh or Stephen King.

We were a film couple. David Chute was writing film reviews for the Boston Phoenix when I met him in New York. He’d come down for a George Romero party, where we talked for hours. He had written two pieces for Film Comment, where I was the new Associate Editor. And even though I had landed my dream job, when he moved to Los Angeles to join Peter Rainer at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, he convinced me to ditch my Upper West Side rent-controlled apartment and move in with him in Koreatown. I had never been to California and had to learn how to drive. We were married in October 1983, and six years later, Nora arrived.
Sadly, we both said goodbye to David last week; he died at age 71 on November 8 of esophageal cancer. He had just moved back after eight years taking care of his father in Poland,...

If you have been reading us in the past few years, you will have probably realized that we have a particular love from crime thrillers, here in Asian Movie Pulse. However, we felt that Korean first and Japanese second are the ones that mostly draw the attention of the audience, and thus, we decided to focus in another industry which actually thrives on a number of films of the category, the Indian one. “Gangs of Wasseypur” may be the most renowned, but we thought we should also present a number of others that are definitely worth a watch, and not only from fans of the category. Here are 15 of the best, in chronological order
1. Black Friday

Om Puri and Linda Bassett in East Is East We've got a bit of a retro focus going on for this week's selection and if you're looking for more inspiration, you can catch the tale of a tiger or two in this week's Streaming Spotlight.
East Is East, 11.25pm, Film4, Monday, August 2
Ayub Khan-Din skilfully adapts his culture clash play for the big screen, while Damien O'Donnell directs with plenty of energy to tell this Seventies set story of a Pakistani migrant to the UK, George Khan (Om Puri), his British wife Ella (Linda Bassett) and their family. Khan has a grand plan for his kids that includes arranged marriages but they have other ideas with revolution on the horizon. The humour here skewers its targets but there is a nuance to the compromises that must be reached which displays a winning warmth for the push and pull of families.

Mumbai, May 22 (Ians) Mani Ratnam's "Yuva" turned 17 on Saturday and Vivek Anand Oberoi, who was part of the film's multi-star cast, turned nostalgic looking back at his experience while shooting the film in Kolkata.
"Seventeen years ago in the land of mishti, on Kolkata's most iconic bridge, I took the actor's adage 'break a leg' a bit too seriously! Haha! From being airlifted for emergency surgery in critical care to fabulous critical acclaim! What a crazy journey! I'm gazing at the awards I was so blessed to win for my role and memories flood in!" he said.
For the unversed, Vivek met with an accident while filming the climax.
The film also had Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor, Esha Deol, Om Puri and Sonu Sood in its cast.

For the ladies and gentlemen of the jury: we present to you… some of our favorite courtroom dramas! In a world where justice is increasingly challenged and the search for truth is of utmost consequence, we’ve amassed some of our favorite bar-based fantasies. Some are more ridiculous (“Ace Attorney”); some are emotionally overwhelming (“Verdict”); and some blend fact and fiction (“Rashomon”). In these explorations into the realm of right-and-wrong, we hope you reach the same verdict as we do: objective morality is not as simple as it seems.

While we get to watch new films all the time, the lockdown could be a golden chance to catch up with a few classics across genres. Digital platforms are overflowing with them, and you would literally be spoilt for choice selecting some really enjoyable stuff that has come out of Bollywood over the decades. Twenty-one days, it would seem, is too short a time to catch up with what really defines vintage Bollywood and is available in the Ott libraries.
Ians picks a few old films that you might want to revisit, that will let you relax and bust the stress of lockdown. Of course, this is not a definitive list.
* Chupke Chupke (1975)
Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the comedy film is about a man pretending to be a driver and fooling his wife's brother-in-law as an attempt to prove that the brother-in-law is not as smart as he claims to be.

Actor Anil Kapoor is one of Bollywood's favourite cops, thanks to his roles in movies such as "Ram Lakhan" and "Race". He has donned the khaki uniform once again for his upcoming film "Malang".
Bollywood has had many actors essaying the role of police officers. Asked what makes him a different cop in "Malang", Anil told Ians here: "My early memories of cop is 'Ardh Satya'. Om Puri gave one of his finest performances in it. I was really shaken up when I saw the film. I really loved the film. Om was terrific as a police officer.

When you think of bustling multiethnic European cities, Warsaw is not the name that pops up in your mind. Also the cinematic representations of the Polish capital so far were hesitant to take cognizance for any diversity, despite the growing number of foreigners living there. However Mariko Bobrik, the Japanese director who studied at Łódzka Szkoła Filmowa (National Film School in Łódź) and settled in Poland with her family, could see through the façade of homogeneity.

Mallesham - the gentle, beautiful and moving story of Chintakindi Mallesham, the handloom weaver from Andhra Pradesh who revolutionised the weavers' profession by inventing a mechanical loom -- why, because his mother's shoulder threatened to collapse with all the manual weaving -- is a testimony of truth and tenacity.
There are many flaws in the narrative. Scenes often lack a sense of flow and rhythm and move with the awkward gait of the protagonist who, let me tell you, is played by a relatively unknown actor who owns Mallesham's part to an extent that he could easily exchange identities with the real Mallesham.
The story of Mallesham's determined bid to beat destiny is not a rarefied experience. There is no room for subtle sighs and stifled sobs in the storytelling. Not that the characters are shown indulging in exaggerated breastbeating. But the raw feel of emotions that are unpolished...

Netflix’s prized find of this year opens with a girl cycling down a deserted road in the dead of the night. She is being followed by ….for the want of stronger word…an eve-teaser who cycles lasciviously behind and beside her, pelting with his perverse chant.
I won’t reveal how this terrifying sequence on Delhi’s horror roadway concludes. Suffice it to say, this unheard-of masterpiece with a cast of completely new actors, brings an experience from the lives of the women in Delhi’s police force without exaggerating, dramatizing or sentimentalizing their thankless work.
Dammit, this gem of a film (where the sparkle is never a showroom sales pitch) doesn’t even get judgmental about those high-handed elements on the roads of Delhi who think they own it. They have their own code of conduct to follow.

He could have directed many more but as one who steadfastly refused to pander to the box-office, he derived satisfaction from the genre of filmmaking that he chose to explore through his oeuvres. Lenin picked up the craft of filmmaking by working as an assistant to Pa Backer, who created a splash with his debut Kabini Nadi Chuvannapol. Lenin got his first break with Venal in 1981 and followed it up with his second film Chillu in 1982. Both these films were shot on shoestring budgets but were noticed for their offbeat treatment of the themes. Lenin’s film Prem Nazirine Kanmanilla caught the eye for its title.

The feature is a story of three police officers in different parts of India, who, well aware of the intelligence that Gandhi's life is under threat, must take key decisions that would eventually either save the Mahatma, or the country. He has confirmed this in a recent interview. Kamal told Mumbai Mirror, “Shah Rukh only got a wristwatch for acting in my film at the time because, by the end of it, I had nothing left in hand. Now, he is the brand ambassador for a watch brand. I am glad that he got the Hindi rights of Hey Ram from Bharat bhai (co-producer Bharat Shah). He should have some memory of the film as he gave his friendship and service for it.” Hey Ram, which was released in the year 2000, starred Kamal Haasan as Saket Ram Iyengar (Hindi) / Saketharaman Iyengar (Tamil) and Shah Rukh Khan as Amjad Ali Khan. Apart from writing and directing the film, Kamal also produced it jointly with Bharat Shah, Charuhasan and Chandrahasan under the banners Raaj Kamal Films International and VIP Films. The film had an impressive technical crew, including maestro Ilaiyaraja for music, Tirru for cinematography and Renu Saluja for editing. Made on a budget of Rs. 6 crores, 18 years ago, Hey Ram went on to collect around Rs. 11 crores at the box-office. Aooowww — Woo! Jack Nicholson summons his inner dog — and dons the makeup and scary contact lenses — to go the Larry Talbot route. Unfortunately, his moon-howling nighttime life isn’t as interesting as the dog-eat-dog infighting in the publishing house where he works – where feral instincts and sharp lupine senses are a major aid to ‘getting a leg up’ on the competition. I know, cheap metaphors are the ruin of promising writers.
