Mill Creek’s latest disc collection gathers three Columbia Sci-fi faves and throws in a Blu-ray debut for a fourth. It’s a good selection: two giant Ray Harryhausen monsters, one marginal bad-taste Sam Katzman zombie epic, and a quirky Lou Costello comedy with Dorothy Provine doing a wholesome take on Allison Hayes’ biggest role. Do these encodings measure up to fancier editions? We give them a spin.

“Iconic” is a gassy word for a masterwork of unquestioned approval. But it also describes compositions that actually resemble icons in their form and function, “stiff” by inviolate standards embodied in, say, Howard Hawks characters moving fluidly in and out of the frame. Whenever I watch William A. Wellman’s 1933 talkie Wild Boys of the Road, these standards—themselves rigid and unhelpful to understanding—fall away. An entire canonical order based on naturalism withers. To summon reality vivid enough for the 1930s—during which 250,000 minors left home in hopeless pursuit of the job that wasn’t—Wellman inserts whispering quietude between explosions, cesuras that seem to last aeons. The film’s gestating silences dominate the rather intrusive New Deal evangelism imposed by executive order from the studio. Amid Warner Bros.’ ballyhooing of a freshly-minted American president, they were unconsciously embracing the wrecking-ball approach to a failed capitalist system. That is,...

When one thinks of the office-comedy series, a picture of people joking at cubicles or pulling pranks on co-workers may come to mind. Well the new series Breaking In is looking to change the way an office-comedy works. The show centers around workers at Contra Security and the jobs they handle. But hold on folks, this isn’t a normal security company. Their practices in the field of security are somewhat questionable both in a public sense and a legal sense. Tomorrow night, Breaking In premieres and we here at TVOvermind would like to give you the readers a quick guide to the characters you will be seeing during the series.

'V' had one of those first seasons that most shows can't quite recover from -- wonky scheduling, showrunner shuffling, the works -- but by finale time, with an entire future generation of Vs wiped out and the sky turning red, the show had found its footing and earned a second season.
With the season 2 premiere (November on ABC) comes an explanation of the bloody atmosphere and the introduction of a few new characters, including Bret Harrison as evolutionary biologist Dr. Sidney Miller and Anna's mother, Diana, who'll be played by the original Diana from the early '80s mini-series and show, Jane Badler.
I caught up with stars Elizabeth Mitchell, Morena Baccarin, Scott Wolf, Joel Gretsch, Morris Chestnut and Laura Vandervoort and boss man Skeeter Rosenbaum to hear all about what comes next.

"V" is adding a Reaper to its cast for Season 2.
Bret Harrison, who starred on The CW's "Reaper" from 2007-09, will have a recurring part on the ABC show when it returns at midseason, the network says. His character, Dr. Sidney Miller, is an evolutionary biologist who will first appear in the season premiere.
Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell) and other members of the Fifth Column track him down, believing he has information about the Red Sky seen in last season's finale.
Harrison's casting comes a few days after the news that Jane Badler, the villain in the original "V" miniseries from the early '80s, will also have a recurring part in Season 2.
In addition to "Reaper," Harrison has starred on "The Loop" and "Grounded for Life." He also starred with Christian Slater in a Fox comedy pilot (called "Security" and "Breaking In" at various points in its development) in the spring,...

Bret Harrison is headed to ABC.
The actor, who we loved as the lead role on The CW's short-lived Reaper, has landed a recurring role on V. According to Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly, he'll portray the character of Dr. Sidney Miller and will debut on the season two premiere.
Look for Erica to turn to Dr. Miller - an evolutionary biologist - for answers regarding what caused the sky to turn red in the May finale.
Earlier this week, the show announced the addition of Jane Badler as Anna's mother. ABC has not yet announced a return date for the drama.

You can add former “Reaper” star Bret Harrison to the season 2 cast of ABC’s sci-fi show “V”, which has already added original “V” star Jane Badler to the second season as Anna’s imprisoned mother. Harrison, last seen chasing demons in the CW’s canceled “Reaper”, will play Dr. Sidney Miller, an evolutionary biologist with information about the Red Sky. Harrison’s character will be sought out by Elizabeth Mitchell’s Erica Evans and the rest of the Fifth Column in the season premiere, scheduled for later this year. As you’ll recall, at the end of “V’s” first season, Anna, in a fit of rage at having her super soldier eggs destroyed by Erica and company, had unleashed the “red sky” on the planet Earth. It’s unlear what the Red Sky is, but it obviously can’t be good, right? Anna was mighty pissed when she fired it off.

Season two of ABC’s reboot of V will be exciting, especially with the news that the original queen of the reptilian aliens from the original V television series, Jane Badler, will be guest starring as Anna’s mother. If that weren’t exciting enough for older fans of the show, younger fans will be happy to see that Reaper alum Bret Harrison has been tapped for a recurring role.
Harrison will play Dr. Sidney Miller, who is an evolutionary biologist that may have figured out an answer what caused the sky to become red at the end of the first season. You can see Harrison in the second season premiere episode!
V stars Elizabeth Mitchell, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, and Laura Vandervoort. The show returns in November 2010.
