When it comes to my comic book reading preferences, I have always been an unashamed fan of American comic books. I read my first Superman story at the age of 6 and never looked back. At that time though, in the late 1970′s, American comic books weren’t always that easy to find, and 2000Ad was a little bit beyond me at first (although that changed in the Eighties ). What I could find however were copies of The Eagle, the now legendary British weekly comic, starring a certain Dan Dare. Sure, he wasn’t quite Superman, who is, but he was to my young eyes pretty cool nonetheless.
Since then I have always had a soft spot for Dan Dare, and when he has periodically been relaunched, and reappeared in various comics and magazines I have usually had a glance.

How has the war against the Hand in New York changed Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist? Spoilers ahead...
Warning: contains spoilers for Marvel's Defenders.
See related Taskmaster: Alex Horne on series 5, casting, remakes, the future Taskmaster: one of TV's funniest, most unexpected comedies Taskmaster: 2-part champion of champions special on its way
The conclusion of Defenders leaves all of our heroes in a very different place to where we last saw them. For better or worse, the war against the Hand in New York has changed all four of them, as well as their allies and enemies. And with more seasons coming for Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Iron Fist, here’s how we think those changes will be seen.
Jessica Jones
When we last saw Jessica, she’d finally achieved some level of closure against Kilgrave and could begin putting her life back together.

Determinedly fighting to stop a viral pandemic from spreading is a challenging prospect for many people, especially those who are struggling to just keep themselves alive.
But Eric Dane's daring character on the new third season of the post-apocalyptic series, The Last Ship, proves that' he's persistently trying to save the little humanity that remains.
The actor also proves that the captain he portrays, Co Cdr Tom Chandler, is now even more comfortable leading the fight against the people who are using the virus for their benefit.
Based on the 1988 novel of the same name by William Brinkley, the TNT drama series isn't afraid to launch the first two episodes of the third season with intense physical and emotional action.
The Last Ship Season 3 Episode 1, which is titled The Scott Effect, powerfully begins by showing Tom contending with the death of Dr. Rachel Scott. The paleomicrobiologist, who created the cure for the virus,...

Hulu released the mid-season finale of "The Mindy Project" yesterday, and I have thoughts on that episode and season 4 to date coming up just as soon as I sign up for this great new dating website called Ashley Madison... Once upon a time, "The Mindy Project" was going to be called "It's Messy." While that title lacked either part of Mindy Kaling's name in it, and would have invited some easy jokes if critics hadn't liked it, it would have captured not only the messiness of Mindy Lahiri's life, but the intrinsic messiness of the show itself. The series has tried lots of different things in terms of characters and tone, and though the cast more or less settled down midway through the Fox run, there are still pieces that feel mismatched, and characters like Jeremy who have stuck around even though nobody seems to know what to do with him anymore(*). (*) In hindsight,...

Stars: Al Pacino, Annette Bening, Jennifer Garner, Bobby Cannavale, Christopher Plummer, Katarina Cas, Giselle Eisenberg, Melissa Benoist, Josh Peck, Brian Smith, Scott Lawrence | Written and Directed by Dan Fogelman
It is fair to say that Al Pacino has made some questionable decisions as to what movies he has starred in recently. With Danny Collins though he reminds us just how charming he can be, in a movie about reclaiming lost life…. Inspired by a true story, Al Pacino plays Danny Collins an aging 1970s rocker who keeps himself going through the use of coke and alcohol. When his manager and best friend Frank (Christopher Plummer) uncovers a 40-year-old undelivered letter to Danny from John Lennon, it inspires Danny to look back on his life and to his roots. In visiting his home town though and seeking out his family, he may not like what he finds.

The 27-year-old reality TV star, who releases her debut novel Sparkling Stilettos later this week (July 23), told Digital Spy: "I think I can repair my relationship with Lauren Pope. I don't really like falling out with my friends, I don't like conflicts. It's just been one of those misunderstandings, those misunderstood situations.
"I was just getting my point across to Lauren that I didn't want our relationship to suffer and it kind of was because I didn't hear from her when she started dating Dan. She admitted she should have reached out more and said 'fair enough', so I just think it was one of those misunderstandings.

Veep, Season 4, Episode 10: “Election Night”
Teleplay by Simon Blackwell and Tony Roche, Story by Armando Iannucci, Simon Blackwell, and Tony Roche
Directed by Chris Addison
Airs Sundays at 10:30pm (Et) on HBO
While Selina Meyer has gotten a taste of the presidency this season, thanks to the sudden resignation of Hughes, the ongoing campaign and election has been a looming presence throughout. The possibility of not becoming an elected leader after getting a taste of the presidency has coloured nearly every action of Meyer, and the season finale finally brings the looming election to the fore. The result is a strong episode that goes in a number of unexpected directions, revealing different sides of numerous characters while not losing sight of the show’s humour.
The federal election ending in a tie opens up some exciting possibilities for the show. The election...

On Survivor: Worlds Apart, Rodney just woke up and realized he's playing Survivor. He complained incessantly about not winning one reward challenge and being stuck on the beach doing the same thing day after day. Uh, hello? Haven't you watched the past 29 seasons? He's even more shocked and shaken that Mama C didn't relinquish her spot to him when she won the opportunity, along with Sierra and Mike, to deliver supplies to a local orphanage and partake in a BBQ reward. Let's face it, philanthropic missions are hardly in Rodney's wheelhouse. It's your birthday, Rodney, Bfd.
The question of whether the core four would turn on each other instead of going after Dan or Sierra was answered. Predictably, the Strong Six chose to force Mike to play his idol. What did come as a shock was Mama C turning on her closest ally, Tyler. Dan may have an advantage,...

Eddie Redmayne certainly looks ready for the Academy Awards here. But the British thesp, who is already an Oscar frontrunner for his multifaceted performance as physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, says that the recognition has been nice—but that certainly wasn't the point of taking on such a demanding role. "Please don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful compliment," said Redmayne, styled by Dan May and looking all sorts of dapper in photos by Tom Craig for the U.K.-based mag Mr. Porter. "I just hope it serves to get the story out to more people." The wheelchair-bound Hawking, who famously communicates via voice machine, was diagnosed with a delibilitating...

While millions of people across the United States celebrated the striking down of the Defense of Marriage Act, the Chick-fil-a President Dan Cathy only had hurtful things to say.
Dan Cathy, president of chicken restaurant chain Chick-fil-a, is not happy with the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act. While millions of people rejoiced on June 26, Dan tweeted that it was a “sad day for our nation,” and then quickly deleted the tweet. Is he totally out of line?

Dan may have been playing the most aggressive game of the summer, but he wasn't the only one playing hard on "Big Brother." Ian played just as hard, although perhaps not with his back against the wall as often. Plus, Ian actually won challenges along the way, while Dan only won a couple. And then there's sweet Danielle. Britney wanted her to come in third because she felt the guys deserved the win the most, and she got her win.
Danielle was blindsided by Dan so many times throughout the season, but he would have taken her to the end. Once again, Ian -- as he pointed out over and over again -- took control of his own destiny by winning the final Head of Household competition. Thinking he had a solid alliance with Dan, he took the all-star to the end with him. It wasn't until the jury was...

So, read all about Dan's master plan here. It was a sight to behold, y'all. But the gist is that he, Frank, Jenn and Danielle are a new final four alliance. Nobody outside of the four of them suspects and the plan is that Jenn will use the Pov on Dan and Britney will go up on the block as the target for eviction.
What's interesting is that Ian is not the target, because Frank was very angry at Ian after hearing Dan spill his guts about the Quack Pack. But they are right in that if Britney goes,...

Blair and Dan may have an intellectual connection, but one important ingredient for a successful relationship is definitely missing! One expert weighs in on what's really going on behind Dair's door. Every Monday I keep hoping that something will go wrong with Blair (Leighton Meester) and Dan (Penn Badgley), but the complete opposite always happens. Their relationship is getting stronger and stronger each episode. Grr! But there is one thing missing that Blair definitely had with ex-boyfriend Chuck (Ed Westwick) -- la pasion! And according to body language expert Linda Talley, the lack of passion is extremely evident even in their most romantic moments -- like their kiss on the steps of the Met. "With Dan, they are kissing, eyes closed but not very passionate. She’s touching his lapels but is not connecting with his body. Besides her lips and hands, no other body parts are touching," Linda Talley tells HollywoodLife.

"Gossip Girl" took aim at one of the Internet's most polarizing stars last night: Teenage bride Courtney Stodden. After consummating their new relationship in an elevator on last night's episode, Blair (Leighton Meester) and Dan (Penn Badgley) referenced the 17-year-old when talking about the lackluster experience."That was terrible ... like the least sexy thing since Courtney Stodden," Blair lamented after their tryst -- with Dan adding "I don't know who that is but it's much worse."Stodden is taking the diss in stride though, taking to her Twitter this morning to clear the air. Oh Blair... If Dan was with me, I would have shown him a waaay better time! xxx #gossipgirl @gossipgirl — Courtney Stodden (@CourtneyStodden) April 3, 2012 While college-aged Dan may seem a little old for 17-year-old Stodden, keep in mind her real-life husband Doug Hutchison is 51! The Lying Game Sneak Peeks: Weekend of Living Dangerously
Of all the developments that came in last week's episode of The Lying Game, the deliberate attempt by Sutton to drive Emma and Ethan apart dealt the most damage. All the incriminating pictures in the world are nothing if there's dissension among the ranks of the good guys and due to Sutton's lies and hurt feelings, the alliance against Alec is quite fractured.
In the penultimate episode, airing Monday, that fracture still hasn't healed, with Ethan holing up in his home and refusing to talk to Emma. It seems their chilly interaction (or lack thereof) in the courtroom last week has become the norm, at least until they figure out what actually happened while Ethan was at the ranch with Sutton. As much as I try to understand Sutton Mercer, throwing off a murder investigation due to your own insecurity and...

After Gossip Girl dared to Dair last Monday, would it to raise the stakes again this week?
"Cross Rhodes" picked up after the kiss-heard-round-the-Upper East Side, with just about every relationship on the show affected by it in some day. Dair, obviously, but also Chair ... and Derena. And Blerena and even Duck.
Overuse of cheesy couple names aside, Dan and Blair hooking up has been great for the show. Everything is in flux now, from Blair's emotions to the battle between Chuck and Dan. After tonight, who is really winning?
It's premature to make any endgame predictions, but if you thought Dair was a flash in the pan, you thought wrong. Especially after Blair filled in for Lola in the Upright Citizens Brigade's rendition of Inside.
Watching B's face as Sabrina talked about Dylan's true feelings for Claire was a poignant moment - the moment Dan and Blair truly...

Gossip Girl's executive producer Josh Safran has dropped hints about what is coming up for Dan and Blair in future episodes. In last night's 100th instalment of the show, Blair (Leighton Meester) fled from her wedding reception with Dan (Penn Badgley). Safran has now revealed that the next episode will be a "direct pick-up and is the same night", TV Guide reports. Safran added that viewers will discover where the duo went in the next episode. "They go some place we've never shot before, but have always wanted to shoot," he teased. "It was really complicated but a super-fun, big, great set piece. And it also has, in my mind, some of the best comedy we've ever done. The next episode is very funny." Safran also revealed that Dan may become fed up with (more)...

Monday's Gossip Girl was the 99th installment since the show's debut (all the way back in September 2007) and the final one before the royal wedding / 100th episode spectacular we've had circled on our calendars forever.
The question, especially after "The End of the Affair" last week, was whether "Father and the Bride" would be mostly light-hearted filler or raise the stakes with any dramatic developments leading into next week.
In terms of the central storyline, not a lot changed. Chuck came into tonight determined to find out why Blair is shutting him out. He got nowhere until the closing moments, when an unlikely ally joined his side.
Nate formed an unexpected partnership of his own discovered the truth about the accident courtesy of a quid pro quo with Gossip Girl. After one fake firing of Serena and a little subterfuge, Trip was outed as the perp.

['Gossip Girl' - 'Memoirs of an Invisible Dan']
Lonely Boy definitely lived up to his nickname this week; Dan may be on the cusp of literary greatness, but with friends and family feeling stung by their fictional portrayals, our budding Hemingway found himself alone in a room full of people, and his Amazon ranking certainly won't make waffles with him in the morning.
This week's 'Gossip Girl' was firing on all scandalous cylinders, elevating itself above guilty pleasure viewing to recapture some of the sparkle of its glory days. The whole gang got together, which always guarantees fireworks, and there were moments to tease both the loyal Chair and the Dair fans. Serena's selfishness was back with a vengeance, and Ivy got herself a new ally -- or did she?

Gossip Girl has strayed far from the books that spawned the series in four-plus seasons, but this week's episode served as an homage of sorts to the Upper East Side novels that started it all.
"Memoirs of an Invisible Dan" may be the best episode title to date. The play on words is great, but it's also appropriate. Thanks to his memoir, Lonely Boy is ... well, a really Lonely Boy now.
Save for the reenacted Dan-Blair scene from Inside, which threw gasoline on the fire of Dair soulmate talk, the episode didn't feature any Omg moments, scandals or surprising plot twists.
It was, however, one of the more emotionally heavy and introspective installments to date.
It remains to be seen how Inside shifts the Gossip Girl Season Five narrative, but it may have forever altered the Upper East Siders' opinions of the author, and perspectives of themselves.

Shocker alert: Dan may not be over Serena just yet.
Monday on Gossip Girl, he was fixated on taking down Chair, or trying to at least (see our review and Round Table). Next week, poor Humphrey grows concerned about his ex.
In this sneak peek from "Juliet Doesn't Live Here Anymore," Dan confronts Serena about Colin, but not in the way you might think. Sounds a lot like a declaration of love to us ...

Dan may not be with Serena on the show right now -- but in real life, Penn Badgley and Blake Lively are going strong. The two were spotted on the " Gossip Girl " set yesterday, where Penn surprised his Gf with a smooch while taking a break between scenes. This isn't the first liplock Blake's had this week -- she was caught kissing co-star Sam Page on Monday. Read more...

(S03E03) "Please tell me it was Blair and not Georgina." - Vanessa and Serena in unison to Dan
Dan may be on a new path since he arrived at Nyu, but he hasn't changed enough to be Blair-worthy. Funny that both girls hoped that he slept with Blair and not Georgina. I get that they prefer Blair over Georgina even if both can be rather evil, but Dan and Blair will happen when pigs fly. Now I have to try to remove that mental picture of Blair and Dan making out from my brain!
In any case, this week's episode of Gossip Girl continued the Dan and Georgina hooking up storyline, put Chuck and Blair at odds, and put Carter and Serena at odds, while having Scott make some true and false revelations.Continue reading Gossip Girl: The Lost Boys
