The Japan Research Institute (Jri), a “knowledge engineering” organization which carries out economic and financial research, recently put out a report which focused on the anime industry in Japan. The report is quite significant, coming from Japan’s think tank and highlights the growing importance of anime to the country’s economy.
The report, titled Current Status and Issues of the Animation Industry in Japan, urged the Japanese government to intervene in order to resolve the issues that are currently rampant in the industry. The highlighted issues in the report were the same as the ones that have been pointed out by the industry veterans in recent times, especially extremely low wages earned by the animators.

Last week, Imagica Infos a publishing and advertising business centering on light novels and magazines, and printing giant Dai Nippon Printing (Dnp) had announced a collaboration to produce “light anime”, a format which includes animating works with about 10% of that of a traditional television anime.
Following the reveal regarding Light Anime, veteran animator Mizue Ogawa, who has worked on Bleach, Attack on Titan and other prominent series, questioned this production method and raised her concerns about how it will change the animation industry.
She wondered if it would be better to read manga or light novels, if the plan was to forcibly push forward the crude “light anime”, which simply relied on partially animated manga panels coupled with voice acting.
“If you’re going to make anime that’s this crude and forced, why don’t you just read manga or novels instead? (A simple question). What is light animation?...

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter) animator Nishii Terumi, who has worked as an animation director on various anime such as Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures, said that the anime industry was bound to collapse soon.
Terumi isn’t someone who has shied away from pointing out the malpractices in the industry. This time too, she has highlighted an issue, which she feels would make the anime industry come to an abrupt end, once the veterans like Hisashi Kagawa and his generation retire from the industry.
Kagawa is a prominent animation director who has worked on Sailor Moon and other iconic titles.
Terumi wanted to point out that it was high time that the anime industry and studios started taking the aspect of training new animators seriously.
“It’s seriously in dire straits. Once the generation of artists like Mr. Kagawa is gone, everything will come to an abrupt end.

Anime legends, producer Masao Maruyama and director Gisaburō Sugii, as well as U.S. animation producer and distributor Gkids, have joined global multimedia company N Lite and N Lite Japan to produce “Mfinda,” a first Afro-anime film which will be the subject of an in-depth first look at June’s Annecy Int’l Animation Film Festival.
Selected amongst the pitches this year at Annecy’s MIFA market in the feature film category, the N Lite original was created by Congolese-American artist Patience Lekien and Christiano Terry, founder-ceo of N Lite.
“Mfinda” follows a 12-year-old Congolese girl who is taken to the mfinda, a primordial forest teeming with spirits, gods and ancestors. There she meets up with another young girl from a different time and together they set out to find the magical Nkisi, vessels that hold ancestral spirits as well as empowering materials or medicines, that will help her find her way home.

When we think of the term “auteur” or “auteur theory” we usually include directors such as Alfred Hitchcock or Stanley Kubrick given the diversity in their work, the amount of creative control they had and the recurring themes in their features. Especially the latter is interesting because Kubrick has managed to leave his footprint in the world of film, even though he has only produced a small number of films, in comparison to Hitchcock that is. Given this definition, director Satoshi Kon, although he helmed even a smaller number of features, should deserve the title as well, especially since features like “Paprika” or “Perfect Blue” are considered masterpieces of the genre and remain influential sources for filmmakers all over the world. In his documentary “Satoshi Kon, The Illusionist” French director Pascal-Alex Vincent, who previously made “Miwa, A Japanese Icon” about actor Akihiro Miwa, tells the story of arguably one of...

Away from Hollywood’s stifling commercial limits, Fumiyo Kouno’s manga about a young bride in wartime Japan has no illusions regarding the human price of war. Young Suzu takes in a new family, endures the hardships of a militarized country and wartime privations, but nobody is ready for what’s coming. Sunao Katabuchi’s historical drama makes stunning use of animation.

If this is the end, it's an ignoble way to go.When hugely acclaimed anime director Satoshi Kon began production on The Dreaming Machine he already knew that he was fighting a fight with cancer that he was doomed to lose. Kon knew he was unlikely to survive through until the end of production and the one request he made of his backers at production studio Madhouse was that they would see the project through even if he was not there to oversee it. And when Kon passed in 2010 it appeared that would indeed be the case with directing duties being passed to Yoshimi Itazu who was to work from Kon's detailed instructions. But then in August of 2011 Madhouse founder Masao Maruyama acknowledged at...

Created by: Eric Kripke.
Directors: Shigeyuki Miya, and Atsuko Ishizuka.
Executive Producer: Masao Maruyama.
Character Designer: Takahiro Yoshimatsu.
Debuting to select audiences and currently available in Japan is Supernatural: The Animation. The first few episodes are now out on Blu-ray and DVD. Expectations are high that this series will soon see a North American release. In what is currently available, the show has both an English and Japanese voice track. All 22 episodes are tentatively expected to be available, direct to video, by April 2011.
The series is produced by Madhouse, an animation studio better known for titles like Vampire Hunter D (1985), Trigun (1998) and Monster (2004). This company is certainly no stranger to the science fiction/horror genre either. Their production values and their artistry is always visually striking. The tales they adapt are sometimes surreal.
In importing Eric Kripke's property, the company has instilled a unique take into the world of Supernatural.

Rumors started to circulate around Twitter today that anime luminary Satoshi Kon, director of such truly brilliant films as Millennium Actress and Paprika, has died at the age of 47. One of the first reports came in from Takeda Yasuhiro, a founding member of Gainax, the animation studio most famous for producing Neon Genesis Evangelion. Now both Ani-Gamers and Anime Reel is reporting that the above tweet is most likely true and while confirmation will have to wait until it's daytime in Japan, Anime Reel writes that other sources have confirmed Yasuhiro's claim, including Masao Maruyama, president of Madhouse Studios (Note: Maruyama didn't say Kon died explicitly, just that a major filmmaker had passed away). According to Anime-Gamers' source, Kon died of cancer.

In news I thought I’d never post, it seems anime studio Madhouse, who are responsible for some of the greatest anime series of all time – including: Death Note, Paprika and Vampire Hunter D, are working on an anime based on the CW show Supernatural. Yes, you read that right… Supernatural.
The original live-action series follows the Winchester brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) as they hunt creatures and other supernatural phenomena across the American landscape. The new anime will be a 22-episode season that will cover the storyline of the live-action version’s first two seasons. According to animeanime.jp, the anime:
…will not only remake the best episodes from the live-action version, but also depict original episodes not seen in the live-action version. Those original episodes will include prologues of the Winchester brothers’ childhood, anime-only enemies, and episodes featuring secondary characters from the live-action version.

Well this is interesting. Cinema Today is reporting that highly acclaimed Japanese anime studio Madhouse is producing a 22 episode season of Supernatural that will cover the first two seasons of the cult CW demon-hunting favourite starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. According to their website, this would be the first overseas drama to ever be developed by a Japanese animation studio.
'Supernatural the Animation' will not only remake episodes of its live-action source, but will also contain original stories never seen before. The new original episodes will focus on the boys' young lives and the adventures of secondary characters. It's coming to Japan in DVD and Blu-ray formats on January 11, 2011. Warned Home Video is behind the release, and Supernatural mastermind Eric Kripke is credited as the anime's creator, which bodes well for those hoping the series is kept firmly in the show's continuity.

While we cross our fingers for the live-action adaptation to Ninja Scroll (come on already!), news came in this weekend via AICN that an animated sequel might be coming sooner than we thought. "Appearing at the Us East Coast's largest anime convention, Madhouse Studios (that animators of Ninja Scroll, Paprika, the Girl Who Leapt Through Time) co-founder and Cco Masao Maruyama stated that Ninja Scroll writer/director Yoshiaki Kawajiri is involved with a script for a sequel to the big-in-the-us bloody affair. Maruyama also mentioned that, like Kawajiri, he has script approval for the sequel. The 1993 anime-movie previously spawned a 13 episode TV series in 2003." In the original, a ninja-for-hire is forced into fighting an old nemesis who is bent on overthrowing the Japanese government. His nemesis is also the leader of a group of demons each with superhuman powers.
