Danny Dyer stars alongside creator and writer Ryan Sampson in Mr Bigstuff, and here’s the trailer for the new sitcom.
Danny Dyer may be better known these days as Mick Carter in EastEnders, but before that, he’d been a steady presence in British film for over two decades, from his debut in Justin Kerrigan’s Human Traffic through The Football Factory and Severance.
The one thing Dyer had never done was lead a sitcom – until now. Mr Bigstuff is created and written by Ryan Sampson, who’s perhaps best known for starring alongside Nicholas Lyndhurst and Celia Imrie in BBC sitcom After You’ve Gone, and for co-starring in ITV2 sitcom Plebs.
The synopsis, per the British Comedy Guide, reads as follows:
Mr Bigstuff explores broken families, fragile masculinity and carpet sales. It tells the story of two estranged brothers; Glen (Ryan Sampson), a nervy perfectionist striving to live...

Whether it’s a collision in an office elevator or a case of mistaken identities, fans of romantic comedies have a love-hate relationship with meet-cutes: The central couple must meet somehow and, since this is a love story, preferably they should do so in a cute way. But how many more white shirts must be killed in the name of clumsy-cute trip-and-falls while holding cups of coffee or orange juice?
For serialized romances, the challenge is even greater. Directors and writers must create interesting run-ins for characters to help sustain interest for longer than it takes for audiences to eat a bucket of popcorn.
“I feel like the bar now is, if you are expected to figure out a meet-cute, it has to be your new slightly subversive never-before-seen version of it,” says director Jay Karas. “I don’t think it’s a trope that we can totally get away from,...

Michaela Coel’s “I May Destroy You” won two BAFTAs in a year where there was no single dominant winner at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ (BAFTA) Television Awards on Sunday.
The BBC/HBO show won best mini-series and leading actress for Coel, who dedicated the award to the production’s director of intimacy Ita O’Brien.
“Thank you for your existence in our industry, for making the space safe for creating physical, emotional, and professional boundaries so that we can make work about exploitation, loss of respect, about abuse of power, without being exploited or abused in the process,” Coel said.
Paul Mescal won leading actor for BBC/Hulu show “Normal People.”
In the coveted drama series category, Lennie James’ Sky Atlantic show “Save Me Too” won over fancied rivals “The Crown,” “Gangs of London” and “I Hate Suzie.”

No matter your opinion of Ross Geller, the actor behind him is an objectively deft comic performer. David Schwimmer only got better during his decade-long, career-making time on “Friends,” and that we haven’t seen him starring in a half-hour comedy since 2004 speaks more to the artist’s varying interests than anything else (be it a collective dislike of the character forever tied to his image or a personal disinterest in the genre).
Enter “Intelligence,” Schwimmer’s return to TV comedy via NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, Peacock. It’s not exactly an orchestrated comeback. The six-episode first season was originally made for the U.K.’s Sky One and already aired overseas in February, making it less Schwimmer’s version of “Cougar Town” or “Mr. Sunshine” — big ticket broadcast series billed as the star’s return to network sitcoms — than a smaller series befitting the actor’s ever-widening focus.

Stop me when you’ve heard this one before: a baseline functional workplace full of well-meaning misfits gets a jolt from a hotheaded new guy, hijinks ensue, lather, rinse, repeat. When using such a formula that’s served dozens of sitcoms well over the years, it’s down to a show’s execution to make itself more compelling than the basics of its premise. “Intelligence,” created by British comic actor Nick Mohammed, occasionally finds moments of intrigue, but is more often content to plug along in its lane.
Even the much higher stakes environment in which “Intelligence” takes place — a windowless cybercrime unit in a London suburb — doesn’t especially up the urgency. Joseph (Mohammed) is a B-minus lackey scraping by under the watchful eye of his fearsome boss, Christine (Sylvestra Le Touzel), while nursing a small crush on their extraordinarily cool in-house hacker, Tuva (Gana Bayarsaikhan). When asked by Netflix if he had any ideas for TV shows, one of pop culture’s most intimidating screen presences said yes — he wanted to do a comedy.
Idris Elba, who stars in and co-created “Turn Up Charlie” with Gary Reich, acknowledged to IndieWire that it was a decision fueled by wanting to do something different, though not necessarily that different from his past work. “The thought of doing comedy felt like either I do something really outrageous like you know… I don’t know. Who’s the guy…? Not Russ Meyers. What’s his name?”
Elba then held up a pinky to the corner of his mouth, invoking the classic “Austin Powers” character Dr. Evil, played by Mike Myers, then laughing off the idea as ridiculous. “People would have been like, what’s happened to Idris?”
Instead of going broad, therefore, Elba wanted to do something relatively grounded,...

Idris Elba is squashing any lingering hopes that he’ll one day play James Bond by fulfilling his dreams to be a DJ.
Rather than swigging martinis and driving an Aston Martin, People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” now stars in new Netflix comedy series, “Turn Up Charlie,” as a struggling British DJ trying to get his break in the music business.
In the new trailer that dropped Thursday, we see Charlie hitting the decks, hitting the floor as he falls out of bed with a mystery woman, and almost hitting rockbottom as he struggles to pay the bills. Luckily, he also lands a job offer — as a nanny for his best friend’s wild 11-year-old daughter.

After playing a detective who gets absolutely pummeled trying to investigate brutal crimes, it must be a fun change of pace to step behind some turntables. Netflix is giving Idris Elba the chance to do just that in “Turn Up Charlie.”
In addition to a March release date, Netflix also released the first look at the upcoming eight-part comedy, which features Elba as a down-on-his-luck DJ who helps babysit for a dear friend’s daughter. Tristram Shapeero — who’s worked as a director on a number of recent comedy classics, from “Community” to “Parks and Recreation” — will direct the first half of the season, while Matt Lipsey will take the second half.
“Luther” Season 5 may have already premiered to series-high ratings, but “Turn Up Charlie” will give Elba a chance to show off his comedy chops, which he showed most recently in last year’s SKy1 comedy “In the Long Run.

Turn Up Charlie stars Idris Elba as a DJ moonlighting as a manny in this Netflix comedy series.
Idris Elba is a DJ (he is what he plays), both in real-life and coming soon on Netflix for an upcoming comedy series called Turn Up Charlie.

Variety reports that a new comedy series called Sick Note is being developed, and it has a great cast of actors that includes Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, Shaun of the Dead’s Nick Frost, and Miami Vice’s Don Johnson. According to the report, the story explores “how desperate a person’s actions can become when a lie starts to spiral out of control.”
These are all great actors who don’t do enough these days, so it’s great to see them land a project like this. Sick Note was created and written by Nat Saunders and James Serafinowicz, and it will be directed by Matt Lipsey. Here is some detailed information on the story:
“Sick Note is the story of Daniel Glass (Grint), a compulsive liar, who’s stuck in a failing relationship and a dead-end job, where he is under the thumb of his irrepressible boss...

Patrick checks out heart-warming, rollicking family drama, Gangsta Granny...
This review contains spoilers.
In some curious and forgettable circumstances I found myself reading Gangsta Granny to one of my younger relatives a couple of years ago. Hailing from the David Walliams stable it was expected to be ripe with gags and puns about the modern world but behind the humour there was a moral tale about people’s neglect of the elderly. At Christmas time it seems ideal fare for families grazing round the TV for feel-good laughs and a life lesson, so unsurprisingly the BBC nabbed the rights and set about adapting it. Written by Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley (two of the penmen behind Gnomeo and Juliet. The one with Jason Statham as a garden ornament. Yeah, that one) with more than a little help from Walliams himself Gangsta Granny has been...

After an unreasonable two-year absence, only alleviated by last year’s Halloween special, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s Psychoville finally returns for a second series of black comedy japes and spooky mystery. As a spiritual follow-up to The League Of Gentlemen‘s small-town horror, Psychoville may lack that show’s insidious edge and pervasive atmosphere, but a more ambitious format (fully serialized plotting, wider scope) has helped carve it a complimentary identity. However, it’s still less menacing and moody than The League ever was — being more of a warped carnival of oddities — perhaps signifying that Shearsmith and Pemberton are mellowing in middle-age, or that colleagues Mark Gatiss and Jeremy Dyson were the more macabre half of their comedy troupe.
I found series 1′s finale of Psychoville unsatisfying, primarily because the story deserved a conclusion, but instead creaked as it tardily introduced a supernatural curveball (a magical locket owned...

The director of Vexed has praised the show's stars. The series focuses on a pair of police detectives played by Toby Stephens and Lucy Punch. Writing on the BBC Comedy Blog, director Matt Lipsey explained that it is difficult to cast characters who are "dysfunctional, neurotic, sexist, quarrelsome, self-righteous and paranoid". "Couple these elements with a need for them to be sexy, bright and warm people you genuinely want to spend time around," he continued. "As you can see, this was going to be more than a little tricky to cast." However, Lipsey described Stephens as a "really refreshing and surprising" choice for the show's character Jack, adding: "He manages to imbue Jack with a likeability by allowing just enough vulnerability to seep out, his arrogance is delivered (more)...
