The TV Academy is being slammed by the Writers Guild of America for apparently making the decision to remove the presentation of the outstanding writing for a variety series/special award from the Primetime Emmys telecast that will take place on Jan. 15, 2024.
In a missive sent on Tuesday to members of the WGA East and West, the guild’s top leadership — including WGA East president Lisa Takeuchi Cullen and WGA West president Meredith Stiehm — calls the TV Academy’s move a “regrettable decision” and one “without any justification or defensible reason” which “devalues our profession.”
They go on to note that the guild has raised its objections directly with the TV Academy and is “strongly advocating to have the category remain in the primetime televised program.”

The Writers Guild of America is doubling down on the Television Academy’s plans to cut the number of writing awards given out on the main Emmys telecast.
The guild has urged writers to “express your feelings” about the “regrettable” decision to remove the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series/Special from the main primetime awards.
In a memo to members, the WGA said that the TV Academy made the decision “without any justification or defensible reason.”
It comes after the Emmys unveiled the category breakdown this month. Later that day, the WGA told Deadline that the decision to reduce the number of writing categories on the main telecast from four to three was “misguided given the essential role writers play in the creative process of variety series and generating value for this industry.”

Amid an ongoing strike, the Writers Guild of America East begins voting today on its new council members, including the successor for longtime president Michael Winship.
With the strike environment generating solidarity across the Wgae and its WGA West counterpart, it would seem that the election would be a straightforward affair with Wgae members on the same page about what they want from their guild.
However, this election comes not much more than a year after the guild reached a compromise to address the WGA East’s rapid growth in recent years by creating three “work sectors” for membership: Film/TV/Streaming, Broadcast/Cable/Streaming News and Online Media.
These changes came after a significant amount of internal conflict stemming from the Wgae’s success in organizing writers at digital media outlets such as Vice Media, Vox, Bustle Digital Group and many more. There are concerns that writers who primarily...

The ongoing writers strike is taking center stage in the WGA East’s officer and Council elections. Writers Guild of America East leadership has touched down in Los Angeles for meetings to review the counter-offer by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers furnished on Aug. 11, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The WGA and the AMPTP are set to meet Tuesday, Aug. 15.
On Friday, the AMPTP presented its latest counter-proposal to the writers’ union. The guild told its members that night that it would “evaluate their offer” and present their response this week.
It’s not unusual for leaders of the eastern branch to join their West Coast counterparts during a strike — president Michael Winship has previously told THR that during the 2007-08 writers’ strike, as president of the eastern branch of the union, he flew out to L.A. every few weeks — but it does suggest that the talks have gotten more serious in recent days.

Writers Guild of America East President Michael Winship will step down from his post in September despite the union’s ongoing strike against Hollywood studios.
Winship, who previously led the union from 2007-2017, said Tuesday in a letter to union members that his name does not appear on the list of candidates for this year’s upcoming elections because he intends to stick with the pledge he made when he returned in 2021 and only serve two years.
“This is not a choice that was made lightly, but I have been a member of this union for more than four decades and active in our work for nearly all of them,” Winship wrote. “Now the time has come for me to pass responsibility to the new generation of Guild members and the elected council.”

There is a major change in the WGA negotiating team ahead of the March 20 start of talks with studios on a new contract. Wgaw Executive Director David Young, who has spearheaded multiple bargaining campaigns on behalf of the writers, is going on a medical leave of absence starting today, the guild’s leadership told members in an email this afternoon.
“Wgaw Assistant Executive Director Ellen Stutzman will serve as chief negotiator for the 2023 Mba negotiations,” the letter said. “Ellen has earned the confidence and full support of the Wgaw Board, Wgae Council, and the WGA Negotiating Committee. She will lead a staff with decades of experience negotiating and enforcing the Mba, and organizing and mobilizing members to support the Guilds’ contract campaigns.”
No additional information about Young’s condition or expected return day has been revealed but the guild’s officers wished him a full recovery on behalf of the entire membership.

The Writers Guild of America has tapped former presidents David Goodman and Chris Keyser to co-chair the guild’s negotiating committee, leading the fight on what are sure to be difficult bargaining with Hollywood’s major players in the first half of next year.
The WGA’s master contract covering most film and TV production is set to expire on May 1. With numerous economic issues and concerns about working conditions for middle-class writers, the negotiations are expected to be intense at a time when the TV and film sectors are in the throes of a messy transition to internet-delivered content on an increasingly on-demand basis.
Goodman, a showrunner known for his work with Seth MacFarlane on “Family Guy” and “The Orville,” is revered among WGA membership for successfully waging a three-year campaign against the top talent agencies that allowed the guild to ban the practice of agencies receiving packaging fees...

Sara David, running unopposed, has been elected vice president of the WGA East representing online media members, and Kathy McGee beat two other candidates to become vice president representing members working in the broadcast/cable/streaming news sector.
David, a digital editor at Paramount+/Viacom CBS for unscripted series, currently serves on the WGA East Council, the guild’s governing body. McGee, a news writer at Wcbs New York City, has served on the guild’s Council and on its Committee for Inclusion and Equity.
This is the guild’s first election since its members voted overwhelmingly in June to amend the Wgae constitution and restructure the guild to ensure a more “balanced representation” among its three work sectors: film/television/streaming, broadcast/cable/streaming news, and online media. Election of the guild’s president, secretary-treasurer and vice president representing the film/TV/streaming sector will be held next year.

The WGA East has resumed its organizing of digital newsrooms after a pause amid concerns that news writers and producers were on the verge of becoming a majority of the guild’s membership.
That concern played out last summer in the guild’s officer and Council elections, with secretary-treasurer-elect Chris Kyle, running unopposed, warning that the influx of news writers and producers posed “an existential threat to the guild” that could lead to it “collapsing.”
Only a few years ago, the vast majority of the guild’s members were film and scripted television writers. But over the half-decade, an aggressive campaign to organize dozens of digital news outlets including Salon, Slate and HuffPost has changed the union’s demographics dramatically, with its news sectors — broadcast and digital — now approaching 50% of the total membership.

The year after he published his autobiography American Sniper and the year before the film adaptation hit theaters, United States Navy Seal veteran Christopher Kyle was gunned down along with his friend Chad Littlefield. So what happened to Chris Kyle's killer? Justice caught up with Eddie Ray Routh just more than two years later… Routh was arraigned on Feb. 2, 2013, the same day he shot and killed Kyle and Littlefield at a shooting range in Erath County, TX. On Feb. 24, 2015, Routh was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. And in April 2017, a court of appeals upheld the conviction — which is the latest update we've heard about the case. Kyle and Littlefield were reportedly helping Routh, a former Marine, with his post-traumatic stress disorder. Routh had also been diagnosed with schizophrenia and psychosis. After being charged with double murder, Routh pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity,...

Back in 2011, actor Seth Rogen and his creative partner Evan Goldberg could do no wrong. The pair had penned such great films as Superbad and Pineapple Express, and while two comedy writers taking on the iconic green-masked crime-fighter seemed like an odd fit, most were open to the idea. After all, even if Rogen and Goldberg had mostly made comedies, their films had a solid emotional core backbone to them that put them a cut above your standard comedies of the time. If they’d made sure to have that same backbone with the Green Hornet, and change the skin a bit, it could turn out pretty good, right?
Well, sadly, it didn’t turn out well. There are certain films crimes never should commit. One of them is being boring. While I wouldn’t call Green Hornet an inept film, I’d call it beyond...
Coming off of one of last year’s best performances in 45 Years, Charlotte Rampling has just signed on to writer-director Lisa Langseth‘s latest drama Euphoria, which will be her English-language debut. Deadline reports Rampling will join cast members Eva Green and Langseth-regular Alicia Vikander, who is also producing through her new company Vikarious. The story focuses on two sisters (Green and Vikander), traveling towards an unknown destination in Europe while in conflict. No more information is currently known about the film, which has plans to shoot in the German Alps this August.
In related news, two Agatha Christie films are in the works from Sony and Paramount, with their eyes on Alicia Vikander and Emma Stone, respectively, THR reports. Josh Radnor, of How I Met Your Mother and Mercy Street fame, will be exploring uncharted (for him) territory as director of Lionsgate/Summit’s sci-fi drama The Leaves, the latest supernatural comic to come alive on the big screen.
This isn’t Radnor’s first time behind the camera (though it is his first paranormal one). His first venture behind the scenes was writing and directing the buzzed-about dramedy Happythankyoumoreplease, followed by Liberal Arts, which he also starred in. Both of his films received serious accolades even though neither was a box office smash.
In an uncharacteristic move, he won’t be making an onscreen appearance this time around. The Leaves is also a departure from his usual comedic material as he enters the world of science fiction.

How I Met Your Mother alum Josh Radnor is getting into sci-fi. He will direct a sci-fi drama called The Leaves, based on a Virgin Comics (now Liquid Comics) one-shot comic of the same name. Summit Entertainment acquired the rights to the graphic novel way back in 2008. Here is the description of The Leaves on Amazon: Inspired by the real-life Naadi fortune-tellers of India and one man’s legendary experience, Doctor Max Mellick has the universe at his fingertips — a world-renown heart surgeon with a striking girlfriend and extravagant New York lifestyle. When he attends a friend's funeral in India, something deep within him is forever changed. Identified as evil by an Indian fortune-teller, Max is forced to flee the country — to save his own life, but more importantly, to preserve his destiny. Interestingly, there’s a major aspect of The Leaves’ story (which Variety mentions) that’s not in that summary.

"How I Met Your Mother" star Josh Radnor will direct the sci-fi drama "The Leaves" for Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment.
The story follows a man who must fight to convince the love of his life that they are soul mates when he ends up in a parallel universe where she has no idea who he is. Radnor is not expected to star.
Radnor, who also helmed "Happythankyoumoreplease" and "Liberal Arts," is directing from a script by Christopher Kyle and Kevin J. Walsh. Gotham Chopra and Carla Hacken ("Hell or High Water") are producing.

Two of the coolest goalies in the NHL gets yet another awesome mask inspired by your favorite video games!
Look I'm a Coyotes fan which means I take a lot of heat from every fanbase in the league, but I have to admit it when another team does something neat.
In this case it's the goalies of the Anaheim Ducks. Last year they had video game and Lego inspired masks, and they are at it again this year.
Goalies Gibson and Anderson have gotten some nifty new helmet designs for the upcoming season. One features Lego Batman, and from what I can see it also has some Darkwing Duck style images too, but it is hard to tell from these teaser images. The second helmet goes retro and has the classic Duck Hunt game from Nintendo, which is kind of funny too considering they are the Ducks after all!

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the events of one movie can be keenly felt in another, from Tony Stark’s Avengers-induced Ptsd in Iron Man 3 to the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D. (seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier) in Avengers: Age of Ultron. And so, perhaps it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to hear from Jaimie Alexander, who plays Sif in the Thor movies, that Captain America: Civil War will start to lay the groundwork for Thor: Ragnarok.
Though Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder is not scheduled to make an appearance in Civil War, given that he was last seen returning to Asgard in order to make sense of visions shown to him by psychic Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) during Age of Ultron, the super-sized Marvel outing won’t completely pass over Thor and his own personal quest within the McU.

Serena
Written for the screen by Christopher Kyle
Directed by Susanne Bier
USA/France/Czech Republic, 2014
Based on a bestselling novel by Ron Rash, Serena, as brought to the screen by director Susanne Bier and screenwriter Christopher Kyle, feels like a husk of an adaptation even to one completely unfamiliar with the source material. It’s the sort of film that, at least in the form prepped for theatrical release, makes one inclined to believe its makers have completely lost the ability to tell a story. And it’s not like that ever seems like a deliberate stylistic choice, with Bier actually focusing on some thematic flourish off on the sidelines. Serena is always focused on its plot. Its perpetually rushed, choppily told, borderline confusing plot.
Part of the trouble in the telling is that the film’s a tonal mess. In her native Denmark, and with American cinema forays...

Place Beyond the Pines: Bier’s Ungainly Period Piece Revels in Unintentional Gaffs
Danish director Susanna Bier’s second English language film, Serena, has gained a bit of notoriety after an unexpected delayed theatrical release in the Us. A melodramatically inclined period piece based on a novel by Ron Rash (author of The World Made Straight, of which an adaptation was released earlier this year), the lush production design and starry cast creates a misleading veneer, which slowly gives way to a rather kooky portrait of its eponymous lead character. Presented with soberingly grim determination, the film lapses into unintentionally laughable territory, though not to a degree worthy of camp aesthetic or cult following.
Filming shortly after their award winning collaboration on 2012’s The Silver Linings Playbook, the first onscreen reunion of Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper finally saw a premiere at the 2014 London Film Festival and reactions have been...

You probably aren’t aware of this, but a third Bradley Cooper/Jennifer Lawrence collaboration is opening in theaters this weekend. In fact, it has been available On Demand for weeks already. Yes, a film that stars arguably the two biggest stars in Hollywood had a VOD start before the impending limited release on Friday. What movie is this, you ask? Well, it’s Serena, a once incredibly high profile adaptation that had the likes of Darren Aronfosky and Angelina Jolie circling it. Initially slated to come out even before American Hustle, hoping to capitalize on the Cooper/Lawrence success in Silver Linings Playbook, this seemed like a strong Academy Awards player. So…what happened? For those of you not in the know about Serena, here’s a brief overview. It’s adapted from the novel of the same name by Ron Rash, directed by Oscar winning foreign filmmaker Susanne Bier,...

For a moment there, it seemed no one could stop talking about "American Sniper." The big box office smash was the focus of lots of think pieces and opinions, particularly in regards to how it portrayed the people who sniper Chris Kyle, played by Bradley Cooper, put into his gunsight. Some said Clint Eastwood's film was apolitical, others read it as a movie endorsing Middle East intervention, while others didn't think it had a message at all. But the filmmaker has shed some light on the lingering questions his movie has left behind. Speaking with students at Loyola Marymount University School of Film & TV, Eastwood said about his movie: “I think it’s nice for veterans, because it shows what they go through, and that life — and the wives and families of veterans. It has a great indication of the stresses they are under. And I think that all...

“Wonderful things can happen when you sow seeds of distrust in a garden of assholes.”

“Alive Day” revisits one of Justified’s core themes, as borrowed from Elmore Leonard: by and large, criminals are not that bright. Even the brighter ones – like Avery Markham and Boyd Crowder, for instance – tend to have Achilles’ heels, often in the form of plain old hubris. To its benefit, “Alive Day” finds a novel pivot point for this theme that is somewhat unlike anything the series has attempted before. That slight shift in perspective is represented by a somewhat unlikely figure: Mundo, a.k.a. Choo-Choo, as played by Duke Davis Roberts.

Eddie Ray Routh, the ex-Marine who fatally shot the Navy Seal and his friend Chad Littlefield at a shooting range in February 2013, was found guilty of murder Tuesday and immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, NBC News reports. Routh, who has plead not guilty by reason of insanity for the 2013 deaths of Kyle and Littlefield at a Texas shooting range, left the scene of the crime in Kyle's truck, jurors were told. They were later shown video of a tense negotiation between Routh and police officers, who'd arrived at his house following the alleged murders.

Exclusive Q&A: It arrived too late to factor in guild and critics awards, but the Clint Eastwood-directed American Sniper has established such a connection with American movie audiences that its dark horse chances of upsetting the Oscar status quo cannot be ignored. It passed Saving Private Ryan to become the highest domestic grossing war movie ever; it even shot past the U.S. gross of Bradley Cooper’s previous biggest hit, The Hangover, and trails only The Passion Of The Christ for biggest-ever R-rated domestic grosser. This, for a hard R film about the wartime exploits and horrors faced by the most dangerous sniper in U.S. military history, and the price paid by Chris Kyle, wife Taya, and his fellow soldiers tasked with door to door searches in Sadr City when it was the most dangerous place in Iraq.
