- By way of his grandfather, literary editor Maxwell Perkins, he descends from Senator Wm. Evarts, Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and through Roger Sherman's grandfather, Roger Wellington, he descends from Edward I, King of England.
- Graduated from Yale University with a degree in theatre, and then attended The Juilliard School, where he studied acting with John Houseman.
- Auditioned for the role of Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977). Although he did not get the part, he later won the role for the NPR radio adaptations of Star Wars (1981), The Empire Strikes Back (1983), and Return of the Jedi (1996).
