Just days after Season 19 finalist Caleb Kennedy was cut from American Idol when a racially insensitive video surfaced, Season 18 fan favorite Doug Kiker — known as the “singing garbageman” – has been arrested on domestic violence charges in Alabama. Kiker was booked on Thursday for domestic violence, per the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office records. TMZ first reported the news.
According the music site A Taste of Country, as of last year Kiker was a married father of two who worked full time on a garbage truck.

The 28-year-old Kiker brought Idol judge Katy Perry to tears with his version of Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road.” The audition racked up more than 200 million video views across all platforms, according to Yahoo Idol expert, Lyndsey Parker. The dentally-challenged contestant was not long for the show, however, being sent home the first day of Hollywood Week.

The live remote housebound version of “American Idol’s” of the Season 18 finale that crowned Just Sam as the winner lacked the usual glitz, fanfare and onstage hugs that has defined ABC’s reality singing competition. But loyal viewers found much to like in this more intimate and heartfelt version of their favorite show that allowed us to see the contestants on their home turf with loved ones and friends.

The first part of “American Idol’s” special episode “This Is Me” not only delved deeper into the backgrounds of 10 of the singers in the Top 21. The two-hour show last Sunday also spotlighted some colorful fan favorites ranging from Gilberto Rivera, a New York City subway serenader who had a rather shiny-glittery fashion sense, to Alabama garbage man Douglas Kiker, who flashed a new set of teeth during his at-home update.
In a recent poll, we asked which of these seven unchosen hopefuls who still managed to win over viewers was your fave of the fan favorites? While judge Katy Perry thought Spokane, Washington, native Eliza Catastrophe was “wrong kind of weird” for the show, a rousing 51% disagreed. Perhaps it was the way the disarming Eliza engaged host Ryan Seacrest in a pun-off. Or perhaps it was how the catchy chorus of her original song, “Sardines,” got stuck in judge Luke Bryan‘s head.

‘American Idol’: Which of the fan favorites showcased on Part 1 of ‘This is Me’ won you over? [Poll]
Since its inception in 2002, “American Idol” has never lacked for interesting hopefuls vying to compete on the singing competition show. Some humble auditioners exhibit talent in the raw, other cockier types act as if they are God’s gift to karaoke and those with outsized personalities quickly reveal don’t know how to rein in their worst tendencies.
But one of the joys of “Idol” always has been the diversity of those who show up each season, whether it’s the genre they prefer or their own individual backgrounds. Even if they don’t make the Top 4o, the hopefuls all contribute in some way to the musical melting pot that drives this long-running reality show.
That is why Sunday’s two-hour special “This Is Me,” focused on fan favorites as well as on 10 of the singers in the top 21. All proved to be highly entertaining and watchable even if...
