- After the death of Lon Chaney, he was one of the actors originally considered for the title role in Dracula (1931). The role finally went to the actor playing the role on stage, Bela Lugosi.
- He played the Comte de Rochefort in both The Three Musketeers (1935) and The Three Musketeers (1948).

- While at the Lambs Club he was stricken with combined effects of a heart attack and a perforated duodenal ulcer. Repeated blood transfusions failed to save his life.
