- I don't like being told what to do. It's easy for people to marginalize you - if they hear you do a certain type of song, they expect that from you every time. But that's so boring!
- [on her writing style] I write a lot of it in my car, that's just a very inspiring place to listen to music. I think it puts me in the zone. I just think of melodies usually and then lyrics come after. Sometimes really easily, and then sometimes I'll have a melody for a week before I come up with any lyrics so it just kind of depends.
- I'm just really inspired by R&B, hip-hop, and alternative music so I just wanted to combine all three of those for the sound. And the type of person I am, I just find darkness interesting in a way. I just love songs that sound like a little crazy, I think it creates an interesting juxtaposition between my voice because it is so bright, and soft, and like pretty, and sweet that I don't want my music to come across sweet or nice. - I think it's important to have a hand in every single aspect of your career, from the creation of the music, to the art, to the music videos, to the production of the music, everything.
- The biggest thing that music is for me is bring people together from different walks of life to just connect with something, even sonically, even if they don't understand the lyrics.
- At 14 or 15, I was making career decisions that most people wouldn't even think of.
- A melody is very powerful expression and for me, it's been interesting to see how I've evolved, how I am telling my story. The more people that I can connect with, the more that I'm able to introduce to my world and to bring them in.
- Everyone is quick to call you a flop or a failure if you haven't reached these high pinnacles of success. It comes from an idea that there isn't space for that many women, like there's this competitive undertone to everything. It isn't necessarily the case at all; there's room enough for everyone to be successful.
