It’s the end of the road for the Chuck Lorre-produced United States of Al, as CBS has decided to cancel the comedy series after two seasons. According to Deadline, the eye network made the calls to inform the show’s higher-ups on Wednesday evening. The sophomore sitcom was one of two Lorre-produced comedies on the bubble, alongside B Positive, which has a better chance of renewal in light of Al‘s cancellation. If B Positive is picked up, it will join Lorre’s Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola on the 2022-23 schedule. United States of Al was created by David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari and revolved around Al (Adhir Kalyan), an interpreter from Afghanistan who moves to Columbus, Ohio, with his friend Riley (Parker Young), a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. The show follows the pair as they readjust to their regular lives in America,...

CBS has canceled the Chuck Lorre-produced sitcom “United States of Al” after two seasons, Variety has confirmed.
“United States of Al” centers on the relationship between Marine combat veteran Riley (Parker Young) and his Afghan interpreter Awalmir, or “Al” (Adhir Kalyan), who finally lands a visa allowing him passage into the United States. Riley, who has separated from his wife, makes room for Al in his Ohio home, and together they struggle to adjust to their post-combat lives.
Creators David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari, who worked for Lorre on “The Big Bang Theory,” began kicking around the idea for “Al” after seeing stories on the plight of 17,000 Afghan interpreters who have been promised asylum in the United States, but are still waiting to be granted entry. Many of the stories depicted the bond that often developed between veterans and their interpreters.
In Season 1, Goetsch and Ferrari put together a team of seven writers,...

Exclusive: The Chuck Lorre-produced sophomore CBS comedy series United States of Al will not return for a third season. I hear the network made the calls to inform the series’ auspices this evening.
For two years in a row, the Chuck Lorre-produced comedies B Positive and United States of Al have been on the bubble. Last year, both of them ultimately got renewed. This time around, as Deadline reported last month, there was talk that only one of the two might join Lorre’s Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola on the 2022-23 schedule, with B Positive having an edge. In light of United States of Al‘s cancellation, B Positive‘s renewal chances look brighter.
Also remaining on the bubble at CBS are drama Magnum Pi, which had been stuck in renewal conversations with lead studio Universal TV, freshman comedy How We Roll as well as freshman drama Good Sam,...

As soon as the CBS sitcom, “United States of Al,” premiered on April 1, 2021, it got viewers and critics talking. One of the talking points was that the show has an Afghan immigrant, “Al,” as its central character, which could be an attempt by the producers to give people of color more representation on network TV.

United States of Al‘s dramatic Season 2 opener strikes a bittersweet note. While Al’s sister Hassina manages to get on a plane headed for Turkey, his mother and his cousin are still in Kabul at the end of the episode, as the Taliban completes its takeover of Al’s native Afghanistan.
The episode, which follows Al and Riley’s tireless efforts to get Hassina to safety over seven days and seven nights, was inspired by the actual experiences of the Afghan and military veteran writers on the series who worked together to evacuate family members in mid-August. Series creators...

Earlier this month, CBS chief Kelly Kahl revealed that the upcoming second-season premiere of Chuck Lorre’s comedy “United States of Al” was re-written to address current events in Afghanistan following the recent withdrawal of U.S. troops. This was an instance of life imitating art, “United States of Al” co-creator and executive producer Maria Ferrari told reporters Tuesday, as many of the show’s writers had families in Afghanistan affected by the situation whom they were trying to help evacuate.
“So we had shot one and a half episodes during the week of the fall of Kabul and quickly realized that… we had guessed wrong what was going to happen and that we were going to have to adjust our plans,” Ferrari said on a virtual panel with Warner Bros. When “United States of Al” debuts its second season on CBS on Oct. 7, it will tell a story that mimics its production staff’s experience in scrambling to help those who had loved ones in Afghanistan during the recent Taliban attacks.
“We had shot one and a half episodes during the week of the fall of Kabul and quickly realized that we were going to have to think that we had guessed wrong [about] what was going to happen and that we were going to have to adjust our plans,” executive producer Maria Ferrari said during a WarnerMedia Television Critics Assn. press panel on Tuesday.
“United States of Al” follows Riley (Parker Young), a Marine combat veteran who struggles to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir aka Al (Adhir Kalyan), Riley’s interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and who Riley helped bring to America to start a new life.

Chuck Lorre’s freshman comedies B Positive and The United States of Al have both been renewed for second seasons.
B Positive, the Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford-fronted show was the first new CBS show to debut as part of the 2020/21 broadcast season and was the second new show of the season, after ABC’s Big Sky, to receive a back order.
Both shows are airing as part of CBS’ Thursday comedy slate alongside Young Sheldon and Mom, and while neither show has been a breakout hit, comedy traditionally takes longer to find an audience.
Created by former Mom co-executive producer Marco Pennette inspired by personal experience, B Positive is about a therapist and newly divorced dad (Middleditch) who is faced with finding a kidney donor when he runs into a rough-around-the-edges woman from his past (Ashford) who volunteers her own. Here’s a complete list of things we learn about Awalmir, or “Al,” in the first four episodes of the new show ostensibly about him: Al (Adhir Kalyan) is a friendly Afghan translator. Al loves qorma-e-sabzi (an Afghan spinach stew), his mother, sister, countless cousins, and best American friend Riley (Parker Young), a former Marine who retained Al’s services while stationed in Afghanistan. Al is extremely respectful of everyone he meets, though he can also be competitive. A devout Muslim, Al had never seen a woman’s bare legs before meeting his driving test administrator in Ohio. End of list.

Young Sheldon will continue to grow up on CBS.
The network has handed the series, which is the most-watched comedy on television, a three-season renewal starting with the 2021-22 broadcast season. The bumper order takes the Chuck Lorre half-hour through to the 2023-24 season.
The deal marks the latest expanded order for The Big Bang Theory spinoff, which in February 2019 was given a two-season renewal.
The show stars Iain Armitage as the titular character, a younger version of the beloved character played by Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory. In the fourth season of the show, which debuted in November, Armitage’s Sheldon is 11 years old, graduating from Medford High School before going to college via a summer job at the local train museum, and attempts to ride his bike without training wheels.

The producers behind CBS’ new comedy “The United States of Al” say they understand the backlash the show has received online in the weeks leading to its April 1 debut. But they also hope critics will see the makeup of their writers’ room as evidence that they took the creation of the show — and the representation to depict accurate characters — seriously.
“Trust us to have your back and trust us to do the right thing,” said executive producer Mahyad Tousi, who founded BoomGen Studios with Reza Aslan to create stories about the people of the Middle East, the Muslim community and other cultures. “Our people, Afghans, Iranians, Pakistanis, Arabs, the people from this region — Middle East, North Africa, Central South Asia region, we’ve seen our image dragged through the mud by Hollywood for decades. Earlier this month, CBS released the first trailer for Chuck Lorre’s upcoming comedy United States of Al, which is set to debut on April 1. What should have been a delightful, fun look at the new sitcom turned into a backlash against the show.
Created by David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari, the series follows a friendship between Riley (Parker Young), a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (“Al”) (Adhir Kalyan), the interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and has just arrived to start a new life in America. Sounds harmless, right? Well, for many there are some red flags. For one, a non-Afghan actor is playing the titular role and in a time when authentic representation is paramount, it was a spark that started a substantial amount of backlash.

Chuck Lorre’s new CBS comedy United States of Al is moving to a new time slot on Thursday nights. The series, which premieres April 1, will move to 8:30 pm Et/Pt following Young Sheldon. B Positive, which was previously in the 8:30 pm slot, will shift to 9:30 pm Et/Pt slot following Mom.

CBS has debuted the trailer for Chuck Lorre’s “United States of Al,” and it’s going to be quite a culture shock for the characters.
The premise of the show sees Awalmir, a.k.a. Al (Adhir Kalyan), arriving in America to begin a new life. He is staying with marine combat veteran Riley (Parker Young) for whom he worked with as an interpreter in Afghanistan.
Hilarity (hopefully) ensues.
In the trailer, when Riley picks his kid’s godfather up from the airport, Al announces that he wants to experience all that America has to offer.
“I want to see everything: Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, and what’s the name of that place that sells peanut butter and brings it to you on a forklift,” Awalmir asks his host.

The untitled single-camera series follows a recently retired pro basketball star who attempts to reconnect with his estranged son by buying an eSports franchise. Dan Kopelman will write and executive produce. Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor of Kapital Entertainment will also executive produce along with Rick Fox. Warner Bros. Television, where Kopelman is under an overall deal, will serve as the studio.
The series is no doubt particularly resonant for Fox, himself a former basketball star who became a co-owner of eSports team “Echo Fox” back in 2015. The team currently competes across a number of titles including “Super Smash Bros.” and “Fortnite.”
Kopelman previously created the CBS comedy series “Me, Myself, and I.” His other credits include “Malcolm in the Middle,” “Big Wolf on Campus,” “Galavant,” and “Rules of Engagement.
