BFI Distribution has released the official UK trailer for ‘Starve Acre,’ an unsettling British folk horror written and directed by BAFTA nominee Daniel Kokotajlo (Apostasy), starring Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark.
1970s, rural Yorkshire. Richard and Juliette Willoughby’s seemingly idyllic family life is thrown into turmoil when their young son Owen starts acting out of character. A sudden, tragic event brings grief and drives a wedge between the once-happy couple. At Starve Acre, their remote family home, academic archaeologist Richard buries himself in exploring a folkloric myth that the ancient oak tree that once stood on their land is imbued with phenomenal powers. While Juliette turns to the local community to find some kind of peace, Richard obsessively digs deeper. An unexpected discovery soon occupies the couple’s attention and dark and sinister forces, unwittingly allowed into their home, offer a disturbing possibility of reconnection between them.

"I am here for her!!" Brainstorm Media has unveiled an official US trailer for a British folk horror film titled Starve Acre, written and directed by British filmmaker Daniel Kokotajlo. This first premiered last year at the 2023 London Film Festival in the Main Competition, but it didn't win anything then or show up at any other festivals after. The film is described as a "meditation on grief and memory", starring Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark (from The Rings of Power) as an idyllic rural couple who descend into madness. Their life is thrown into turmoil when their son starts acting strangely, unwittingly allowing dark and sinister forces into their home, awakening a long-dormant ancient evil rooted deep in the countryside. Also starring Erin Richards, Sean Gilder, Robert Emms, & Roger Barclay. It did get mostly positive reviews, one saying it is "fantastically enigmatic horror film done beautifully well." Seems like it has plenty of creepy moments.

If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise … and if those woods happen to be in Chadder Vale, the fictional Northern setting for genre-crossing ITV mystery Passenger, that surprise may well be the end of you.
It was certainly the end of Mehmet, a Chadder Vale youngster lured in to the town’s deadly secret. It was very nearly the end of his pals John and Katie, and who knows how many others have fallen foul of The Pangaea Initiative’s strange experiment over the years?
With major spoilers for the Passenger finale, and more questions than there are stolen recycling bins in Tony’s lock-up, let’s pick apart what we know about this conspiracy.

Twin Peaks. Sunnydale. Castle Rock. Hawkins… America’s TV monopoly on small towns where Weird Stuff Happens has gone on for too long. Britain was once home to The Wicker Man, Children of the Stones and The Prisoner, all classics of the ‘something’s not right here’ genre. Isn’t it about time the UK put a few creepy burgs back on the map?

Comedic and sinister with a terrific cast led by Loki’s Wunmi Mosaku, Passenger, from the producers of Gangs of London and Chernobyl, is a top binge-watch that’ll keep you entertained and guessing – hopefully into a second series and beyond.

Actor Andrew Buchan makes his screenwriting debut with ITV thriller Passenger, and here’s the trailer.
Andrew Buchan is probably best known for playing grieving father Mark Latimer in Chris Chibnall’s whodunnit Broadchurch. He has also played the title role in drama The Fixer, as well as parts in films like Nowhere Boy, All The Money In The World and The Mercy.
He now makes his screenwriting debut with ITV thriller Passenger.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Riya (Loki star Wunmi Mosaku) arrived in the quiet town of Chadder Vale five years ago and has since been searching for something, anything that will make her feel alive again. Then one night local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears. The town barely has time to register her absence before she reappears the next day, apparently safe and sound. The townsfolk ask few questions and normal life resumes. But for Riya,...

Mary & George, which stars Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine, has a new U.S. home.
The series was originally set to air on AMC in the U.S. and will now move to Starz. It is a co-production with British pay-tv broadcaster Sky. Watch the new teaser trailer above.
AMC Networks was planning to air it in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It’s not clear why AMC dropped the drama series, but it comes as AMC has been cost-cutting and axing shows such as including Demascus, Invitation to a Bonfire and second seasons of Pantheon, Moonhaven and 61st Street.

You can smell what’s happening in “Starve Acre” before you puzzle the rest of it out. The grassy, peaty dampness of its rural Yorkshire setting seems to hit the olfactory glands without any scratch-and-sniff assistance, only intensifying as the film unearths its literally deep-buried secrets. Daniel Kokotajlo’s impressive second feature unfolds in a vein of British folk horror that has been popular of late — with films from Ben Wheatley’s “A Field in England” to Mark Jenkins’s “Enys Men” all tapping into that retro “Wicker Man” eeriness — but rarely with such rattling sensory specificity or formal refinement. Starring Morfydd Clark and Matt Smith as former townies unprepared for the full burden of lore they inherit with their desolate farmhouse, it’s a tale of quite outlandish fantastical leaps, grounded by the chills it also finds in common weather and wildlife.

Sky and AMC have released a series of first-look images for the upcoming limited event series, ‘Mary & George’, starring Academy Award and BAFTA-winning actor Julianne Moore, alongside Nicholas Galitzine and Tony Curran.
The series is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Mary Villiers, who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George, to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England and become his all-powerful lover. Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors. And with England’s place on the world stage under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher.

New characters from both parts of the Grishaverse enter the story this round as well, including Tolya Yul-bataar (Lewis Tan), Tamar Kir-bataar (Anna Leong Brophy), Sturmhond aka Nikolai Lantsov (Patrick Gibson) and Wylan Hendricks (Jack Wolfe).

A young orphan woman with the power to summon the sun; her childhood best friend, a brave and tireless soldier willing to die for her; the all powerful ‘Darkling’ general who wants her to rule by his side – this is the love triangle at the centre of Netflix’s Shadow and Bone and it’s a suitably fizzy one.
But while the central plot, the political machinations, magic and the introduction of ‘The Fold’ are all key parts of what makes this show – an adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s books – a compelling watch, by the end it’s a pointy-faced gangster with a limp who steals the show.

Will the residents of Nampara ever find peace? Here’s our review of another solid Poldark series 3 episode…

Ross Poldark, stay out of trouble? Not on your nelly. He’s got trouble written right through him like a stick of Cornwall rock. Demelza may as well wish for pigs to fly or for a bodice that adequately covers her cleavage as for Ross to live adventure-free. Like mining, swarthiness and rebellion, acts of derring-do are in his DNA.
So it’s off to France he goes at the end of episode two, in search of excitement and Dwight Enys. If all goes smoothly, he’ll retrieve his pal from the French firing squad and bring Demelza home a nice bit of lace from duty free.

As a fan of the Alien film series,...

Clio Barnard’s stark yet heart-wrenching film The Selfish Giant (2013, UK) offers two fantastic performances from its young stars in their acting debut. Matt Price discusses how his costume design for the film reflects the strong, relatable characters so well…
It is lunchtime in London as costume designer Matthew Price shuffles into the Curzon, Soho. Recently collaborating with Clio Barnard on the Bafta nominated film, The Selfish Giant, reuniting after experimental documentary The Arbour, Price is surprisingly reserved about his work. “I wasn’t really sure if they’d take me on again,” he says of Barnard and producer Tracey O’Riordan. “The Arbour did quite well so I didn’t know if they’d interview designers with more experience but luckily they asked me to do it.”
Connor Chapman as Arbour wearing a pair of rigger boots. These are a commonly worn workwear boot and stereotypically, if accurately, connected with the traveller community.

This film was first brought to my attention when I saw some guerrilla marketing in and around Bradford, England, the place in which The Selfish Giant was set and filmed. I’m from West Yorkshire so I was interested to see the region represented and was curious about the story too.
Written and directed by Clio Barnard (The Arbor), The Selfish Giant follows the two characters of Arbor and Swifty, two young Yorkshire lads who, after being excluded from their school for fighting, take to the streets in their local area in Bradford and stumble on a scrap dealer named Kitten (Sean Gilder) who puts them to work collecting scrap metal for him, which they can weigh-in and get some money for. Based on the actual occurrence...

There is something disarming about stories that deal with childhood friendships, especially ones that are filmed close to where you live. The Selfish Giant was filmed around the city of Bradford, so there is a familiarity to the landscapes that I see in the movie as I live there. What is more effective is the natural acting of two boys plucked out of obscurity showing a friendship that is all too real and all too painful at the end.
The Selfish Giant is based on an Oscar Wilde short story, and after watching the film you’ll find yourself wanting to read the tale to compare the two. For the film though it tells the story of Arbor (Conner Chapman) and Swifty (Shaun Thomas). Brought together as...

Gemma Arterton brings beauty, determination and moral goodness to one of the great female roles
A new theatre is often a challenge. Until weathered and worn by use, it can seem strangely cold and forbidding. But the extraordinary thing about the new indoor Jacobean theatre that is part of Shakespeare's Globe, is that it feels as if it's always been there and was just waiting to be uncovered.
Designed by architect Jon Greenfield, it is small, intimate, welcoming. It seats 340 people who sit tightly packed in two galleried tiers in a beautiful oaken building. I wouldn't say the backless seats are the height of sybaritic comfort but they force one to pay attention. But the real innovation is the use of candlelight in the tradition of 17th century theatre. Sliding panels at the back of the auditorium admit artificial light when needed but there is something rich,...

Riding on the Shoulders of Giants: Barnard Dexterously Makes a Go of Modern British Neo-Realism
The depiction of tumultuous youth enduring the harsh realities of their unfortunate upbringings has a long lineage that ties Clio Barnard’s devastating Cannes preemed first fiction feature, all the way back to Ken Loach’s masterly neo-realist depiction of the British working class of Kes with startling resemblance. Barnard’s modern take on the subject sets a pair of expelled youngsters in the blue collar outskirts of Derby and sees them suffer the negligence of their families, the insults of classmates, and the extortion of local scrap collectors only to find that life is sometimes nothing more than an emotional endurance test in which we must plod along at varying degrees of compliance. And yet, despite the gloom and doom nature of her subject, there is a warm naturalism in her depiction of the...

Clio Barnard's affecting take on Oscar Wilde's fable sees a pair of outsiders scrabble to survive on a poor Bradford estate
Director Clio Barnard's first feature, The Arbor, was an extraordinary account of the hard life and times of the playwright Andrea Dunbar which pushed at the boundaries of documentary film-making. A "verbatim drama" which included extracts from Dunbar's work performed on Bradford's Buttershaw estate, the film used audio interviews with the late playwright's friends and family to which actors performed note-perfect lip-synched "readings", creating a haunting and disorienting fusion of fact and fiction. On the surface, Barnard's latest feature is more formally conventional, drawing on the neorealist tradition of Ken Loach (the ghost of Kes hovers overhead) to tell the story of two young boys from Bradford who turn to the scrap metal trade to support their struggling families. Yet scratch the surface and those same cross-generic fluidities are still present,...
