Illustration by Stephanie Monohan.Kirsten Dunst has played a pageant contestant not once, but twice: famously, in the cult classic Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), then, in a self-reflexive turn in Showtime’s short-lived satire of predatory capitalism, On Becoming a God in Central Florida (2019). In the latter, Dunst plays Krystal Stubbs, a pageant queen turned widow turned cunning representative of the Founders American Merchandise corporation. In one scene, she instructs a goth teen on a stratagem of competition: “Dazzle by any means necessary. If you want better lightin’ than the other girls, give yourself better lightin’ than the other girls.”Dunst has built a career around this principle. Having started as a child star, she has supported superhero franchises, starred in teen movies and art films alike, and worked in both film and television. In each project, she follows Krystal’s advice, juggling each character’s interiority with bigger-picture concerns. She...

“Emily in Paris” Season 5? Not so fast.
During the amfAR Gala at the Cannes Film Festival, which raises money for research to end HIV and AIDS, Winnie Harlow and Paris Jackson appeared onstage to auction off a walk-on role in a previously unannounced fifth season of the Netflix series. The winner of the auction shelled out €250,000 to appear in the series as well as the chance to attend the Season 4 premiere in Los Angeles. Harlow and Jackson also said that Season 5 of the popular series is scheduled to begin shooting in mid 2025.
However, an individual with knowledge of the situation says that Netflix has not in fact greenlit another season of “Emily in Paris.” According to the official amfAR auction website, the walk-on role came “Courtesy of Darren Star,” the creator of the series. The website was recently updated to state that the winning bid “will have the opportunity to...

In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.

While comforting for others, this time of year can also bring with it the horrors of complicated family dynamics. For every turkey-loving Thanksgiving stan who thrives on big family reunions, there’s another lost and lonely soul looking for a friendly face. Many of us find comfort in spending time with a chosen family of trusted friends, fellow misfits we know will accept us no matter what. But even these bonds can bend. Sometimes they break. The Craft writer Peter Filardi has been approached about turning the 1996 teen horror classic into a Broadway musical, Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned.
“We really just started discussing it,” Filardi tells me from the set of Damn Handy, a short film he’s writing and directing. “[The Craft] was my story, and I got the story credit, so that gives me something called separate rights, which covers theater. I didn’t even know that!”
He continues, “These people with a track record of doing Broadway musicals approached me and asked me if I had the rights and if I was interested. Once lawyers determined that I did have the rights, I said, ‘I’m definitely interested.’ I’ve just given them a free shopping agreement, and they’re going to try to set it up.”
“I would love it if it happened,” Filardi adds.

Few American filmmakers of the last 40 years await a major rediscovery like Hal Hartley, whose traces in modern movies are either too-minor or entirely unknown. Thus it’s cause for celebration that the Criterion Channel are soon launching a major retrospective: 13 features (which constitutes all but My America) and 17 shorts, a sui generis style and persistent vision running across 30 years. Each weekend Nathaniel is looking at a movie that you, the readers, chose the previous week.
Arlene: What's the deal with that Watergate thing. Do you know anything about it?
President Nixon: No, no. No no no. Absolutely nothing. I don't know a thing. No way, Jose.
Dear readers, I struggled with finding time for Dick this week. I recall mostly loving Dick in the late 90s/early 00s even though the quality of it definitely varies. But you demanded I spend some time with Dick so I finally did this weekend. It turns out it's especially delightful in the morning.
Everything you've just read is jokey but true (literally and figuratively) and if you found it annoying, then Andrew Fleming's Dick (1999) is probably not the movie for you...

Impressed by Aripina Jayalaxmi’s story of determination and struggle, the actor has assured financial help for her coaching for civil services examination.
After watching a story about Jayalaxmi on a leading Telugu television channel, the actor’s mother had suggested to him to lend a helping hand to the girl. Jagapathi Babu not only met Jayalaxmi but also assured to help her in preparing for the exam.
Parents of Jayalaxmi collect garbage from houses. The family lives in Singareni colony slum in Saidabad area of Hyderabad. A degree student, Jayalaxmi has been raising the issues of slums by organising meetings under the aegis of children’s “parliament”.
She earlier acted as “Prime Minister of the city level children’s Parliament” and raised pressing issues like hunger.

Emily in Paris is the hit series created by Darren Star and Andrew Fleming starring Lily Collins. This season still counts on the fantastic costume design by Marylin Fitoussi.
Emily has decided to prolong her stay in Paris, after her torrid fling with Daniel. There is plenty of couture, spiffy characters and Emily is as chipper as ever.
Premise
When ambitious Chicago marketing exec Emily unexpectedly lands her dream job in Paris, she embraces a new life as she juggles work, friends and romance.
Season Three Emily in Paris (2020-)
Emily still communicates in English after having spent a few years in Paris. A lighthearted, clichéd series that is probably a delight for youngsters who dream of the cool Parisian life with cool outfits, très chic offices and houses, and formidable lalaland scenarios.
However off the series might be in terms of realism, it is a colorful and amusing number.

And I was like, You know what? If not now, when?” recalled Collins. “Then I kept them. "Faced with two very different paths, Emily will have to decide exactly where her loyalties lie — at work and in her romantic life — and what those decisions mean for her future in France, all while continuing to immerse herself in the adventures and surprising twists and turns that life in Paris provides."

Fascination over the mysterious identity of Deep Throat, the Watergate whistleblower, helped fuel the success of 1976’s Oscar-winning All the President’s Men, but it also led to another, far unlikelier project: 1999’s Dick, a bouncy comedy about two teen girls who unwittingly find themselves at the center of the scandal.
Dick focused on Betsy (Kirsten Dunst) and Arlene (Michelle Williams), a pair of 15-year-old best friends who wind up as President Nixon’s dog walkers and, somehow, become famed informant Deep Throat for Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward (Will Ferrell) and Carl Bernstein (Bruce McCulloch). (It wasn’t until 2005 that former FBI associate director Mark Felt revealed himself to have been the Post’s anonymous source.)

The prominent Swiss fest dedicated to international indie cinema is on track to hold its 74th edition as an in-person event August 4-14, barring coronavirus complications.
Beginning as an executive assistant to Roger Corman, Hurd co-wrote “Terminator” with her now ex-husband James Cameron and went on to produce “Aliens” and Michael Bay-directed “Armageddon,” among other big-screen features. She moved into series television in the early 2000s and “The Walking Dead” arrived in 2010, followed by spin-off “Fear the Walking Dead” and USA’s “Falling Water.”

“We Are The Weirdos, Mister.” A phrase you’ll find printed over t-shirts, pin badges, mugs, earrings, tote bags, necklaces, and more all over the internet. It’s the most iconic line from The Craft, a film released 25 years ago that still has a rabid following today. For anyone unfamiliar with The Craft, it’s a line spoken by Fairuza Balk’s Nancy, an inferno in black lippy and sunglasses, the de facto leader of a homemade coven made up of outsiders who have taken the raw deal the world has given them and rejected it by learning to harness the power of nature. This line is everything. We are no longer going to be victims, it says. We will no longer be afraid. We reclaim our space, our power. That we are four teenaged girls will no longer mean we have to watch out for ‘weirdos’ – because it is us who are the weirdos.

How long before a Donald Trump biopic? Meanwhile, from young Obama to stately Abraham Lincoln, some White House incumbents fare better than others on the big screen
At long last, Donald Trump is out of the White House. His story, one suspects, is far from over: any screenwriters hovering eagerly to write the quintessential film about America’s 45th president would be best advised to keep their powder dry. But write they eventually will – the presidential biopic practically being the due of most men who have held the position, however eventfully or otherwise. Few stick around for long in the popular imagination: when last did you have the urge to watch Merchant Ivory’s dreary Jefferson in Paris (1995; not even streamable) or Ron Howard’s righteously bland Frost/Nixon (2008; iTunes)?
Cinema has certainly done a lot for Richard Nixon, who got one of the funniest of all Hollywood political satires in Andrew Fleming’s smart,...

Quelle bonne nouvelle!
Emily Cooper is staying in Paris for a little while longer and maybe, just maybe, she might learn a few actual French words this time.
Netflix has renewed its wildly popular romantic comedy series “Emily in Paris” for a second season. News of the pick up comes less than two months after the show launched to quite the online stir online stir and drew a somewhat sniffy response from French critics.
However, it has clearly been a strong performer for Netflix in the viewership département, breaking into Nielsen’s list of the top 10 most-watched streaming shows for the week after its premiere. To put its performance into context, it placed above the likes of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Criminal Minds” for that particular week.

Witchcraft, in all of its pop cultural representations, has always been a bit queer. Whether it’s the hallowed image of an unmarried woman and her cat, Bette Midler with her iconic fake teeth, or a coven of angsty teens bonding over dark magic rituals, it’s no surprise that LGBTQ folks have always felt drawn to stories about the supernatural. While there is nothing explicitly queer about the original “The Craft,” Andrew Fleming’s 1996 dark comedy about a group of teen witches, the film’s swift and definitive transformation into cult classic included a healthy dose of queer reclamation.
While the recently released continuation, “The Craft: Legacy,” does not lean any further in the Sapphic direction, it does include a trans girl in the coven. What’s most refreshing about the character of Lourdes, played by 17-year-old newcomer Zoey Luna, is that she’s just one of the witches.

Actors that star in long-delayed sequels aren’t obligated to be overly familiar with the original, but it definitely helps. That being said, The Craft: Legacy is barely connected to its 1996 cult classic predecessor, and simply sets an all-new story with an entirely different cast in the same world, with the results being solid if unspectacular.
Andrew Fleming’s The Craft was a genuine sleeper hit after first being released almost a quarter of a century ago, with strong word of mouth powering the teen-orientated supernatural horror to a box office haul of over $55 million against a $15 million budget. Since then, the flick has developed a loyal and passionate following, ensuring that Legacy had a built-in audience even if original star Neve Campbell refused to even entertain the idea of a comeback, as did the rest of the cast from the first movie.

Editor’s note: The following article contains major spoilers for the end of “The Craft: Legacy.”
For eagle-eyed viewers, the first trailer for Zoe Lister-Jones’ “The Craft: Legacy” packed one hell of a callback to the original 1996 film: a shot of star Fairuza Balk in character as Nancy Downs, the embattled leader of the teen coven that Andrew Fleming’s cult classic followed. While Nancy’s fate in “The Craft” wasn’t at all a happy one — she’s remanded to a psychiatric ward, her powers stripped after a “binding” by Robin Tunney’s Sarah Bailey — Lister-Jones’ film offers a new future for Nancy that could set the stage for a continuing franchise.
Set 25 years after the original, Lister-Jones’ film initially replicates the basic plot that kicked off Fleming’s film, following witch-in-the-making Lily (Cailee Spaeny) and her mother Helen (Michelle Monaghan) as they move in with her mom’s...
