A celebrity from the age of 11, Elizabeth Taylor was practiced at public relations for almost all her life, so there aren’t many personal revelations in Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes. But Nanette Burstein’s elegantly constructed documentary, mostly in Taylor’s own words backed by illuminating archival images, works as a lively bit of film history about movie stardom in the volatile 1960s as the studio system was fading and the media exploding.
The film — which premiered at Cannes in the Cannes Classics sidebar — is based on 40 hours of recently rediscovered audiotapes, recordings Taylor made in the mid-1960s for a ghost-written memoir (long out of print). It was the most frenzied moment of her fame, when she was coming off the paparazzi-fueled scandal that was Cleopatra. Taylor, who died in 2011, recalls her many marriages — four when she made these recordings, since she was on the first of two...

There have been countless books written about the immortal star Elizabeth Taylor, even some credited to her as both memoir or autobiography including 1989’s Elizabeth On Elizabeth. But a book released on January 1, 1965, probably comes closest to a pure autobiography, and the cover simply says, Elizabeth Taylor by Elizabeth Taylor. It is a by-the-numbers account of her life through her own words up until that point, but it actually was written by Richard Meryman, a journalist credited with among other things the last interview with Marilyn Monroe.
Meryman got Taylor to sit for some tape-recorded sessions in 1964, so he would be able to write the book as if Taylor did it herself. Sixty years later, those presumed “lost” recordings have been found and cleared for release by Taylor’s and Meryman’s estates. They have been in Meryman’s wife’s possession all these years,...

Carrie Fisher in WonderwellImage: Vertical
It’s been six and a half years since Carrie Fisher died, just six weeks after wrapping what would be her final project, an urban fantasy film titled Wonderwell. If you haven’t heard of it, that’s probably because it never had any kind of commercial release—until now.

Joseph L. Mankiewicz’ “Cleopatra,” which opened in New York on June 12, 1963 and in Los Angeles a week later, was not a flop. In fact, the 243-minute film was a box office champ making $26 million at the box office, $6 million more than the Cinerama epic “How the West was Won.” But being the most expensive movie of its time — the budget ended up being around $44 million which would be around $429.5 million in 2023 — it took a long time to recoup its staggering costs. The film was such a drain on Twentieth Century Fox, the studio ended up having to sell nearly 300 acres of its backlot. That acreage was transformed into Century City.

It wasn’t until Billie Lourd was in middle school that she finally took a seat in front of the television, unprompted, to watch a little film called Star Wars.
While her mother, the late Carrie Fisher, had been trying for years to get her to check out George Lucas’s sci-fi classic as a way to earn cool points thanks to her starring role as Princess Leia, Lourd, now 30, would typically “roll my eyes and yell, ‘It’s too loud.'” But when boys her age confessed how much they fantasized about Fisher, she decided to press play.
“I went home to investigate who this person was they were talking about. I finally watched the movie I had forever considered too loud, and finally figured out what all the fuss was about with the lady in the TV,” Lourd relayed from the podium on Thursday during Fisher’s posthumous Walk of Fame ceremony.

In her 2011 memoir, “Shockaholic,” Carrie Fisher opens with a quote from Jewish poet, playwright and paratrooper Hannah Senesh: “There are stars whose radiance is visible on Earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for humankind.”
Self-deprecating to a fault, it’s unlikely Fisher would’ve ever referred to herself in such complimentary terms, but six years after her death, and soon to be bestowed with her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 4, it’s impossible to ignore the way her brilliance continues to permeate our cultural consciousness, and how much dimmer the world seems without her.

Margie Duncan, a dancer and actress who stood in for her dear friend Debbie Reynolds in films including The Unsinkable Molly Brown, The Second Time Around and The Singing Nun, has died. She was 92.
Duncan died Jan. 3 after a brief illness at her Porter Ranch home in Los Angeles, her family announced.
Duncan worked with choreographers in the movies to learn Reynolds’ routines, “dancing in” during blocking and rehearsals until the numbers were set. She would then teach the routines to her friend.
In the musical comedy The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964), for which Reynolds received her lone Oscar nomination, Duncan rehearsed the number “Ain’t Down Yet,” which took place in the barnyard of Molly’s (Reynolds) country home, with choreographer Peter Gennaro.
Duncan jumped on the top of a shed to sing the last verse while walking backward down its thatched roof and then back up, finishing at the front of the roof.

To fans of "Star Wars," Carrie Fisher will always be Princess Leia Organa, the role that remains her most iconic. And why shouldn't it be? Fisher introduced Leia in the 1977 sci-fi blockbuster, reprised her in two sequels, and then reintroduced her in a new batch of "Star Wars" films nearly four decades later. A true Hollywood scion (Fisher's parents were famed singer Eddie Fisher and legendary movie star Debbie Reynolds), Fisher pulled off the rare feat of carving out her own niche as an actor, stepping out from the considerable shadows of her famous folks. In fact, Leia was far from Fisher's only role, simply her best-known from a unique and eclectic career that spanned from her 1969 screen debut -- playing a Girl Scout in one of her mom's TV specials -- until her death in 2016 at the age of 60.

George Clooney has issued a call for the U.K. tabloid the Daily Mail and other outlets to stop publishing pictures of celebrities’ children, calling it a matter of safety.
Clooney issued “an open letter to the Daily Mail and other publications” on Thursday after asserting that he saw pictures of the 1-year-old son of actor Billie Lourd on the website of Daily Mail. Lourd’s son Kingston is the grandson of the late actor Carrie Fisher and CAA managing director Bryan Lourd. He is the great-grandson of movie legend Debbie Reynolds and singer-actor Eddie Fisher.
Clooney flatly stated that his own children are threatened by intrusive photos of celebrity-hunting photographers because his wife, Amal Clooney, works as a human rights lawyer and because of his high profile as an Oscar-winning actor.

Elizabeth Taylor, who would have turned 89 on Feb. 27, lived multiple lives. She was a movie mega-star, a tabloid mega-celebrity (which are not always the same thing), an innovator in creating herself as a brand — and a tireless and effective philanthropist and activist.
She was adored, admired, denounced, scandal-ridden and unpredictable, and the public couldn’t get enough of her.
On screen, she was at her most breathtakingly beautiful in such 1950s and ‘60s films as “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “Suddenly, Last Summer,” “Cleopatra” and “The Taming of the Shrew.” And in the 1966 “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” at age 34, she frumped herself up and gave a great performance, winning the second of two Oscars (after the 1960 “Butterfield 8”).
She also excelled in a wide array of films, like “Giant” (1956), “Raintree Country” (1958), “X, Y and Z” (1972), “Ash Wednesday”, and “The Mirror Crack’d” (1980), her last leading role on the big screen.

The 21-year-old Nathalie had met the 29-year-old actor in a nightclub when he was in the media spotlight after a stormy five-year engagement to Romy Schneider. Following an affair, the pair were married in secret and departed for the U.S., with the actor engaged in a short-lived contract with MGM. Their son Anthony was born shortly after.
They received rave write-ups for Le Samourai but their marriage was stretched by the actor’s infidelity, including an affair with actress Mireille Darc when they appeared together in Jean Herman’s 1969 crime pic Jeff.

Discovered by Hollywood at a young age when she won the Miss Burbank pageant, she would quickly be cast in starring roles in movies. As fortunate as she was in her acting career, she had quite disastrous luck when it came to her personal life. The marriage did last long enough to produce two children one of whom, Carrie Fisher, would go on to intergalactic success as Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” movies. Both of Reynolds subsequent marriages caused her great financial stress while one husband embezzled vast sums of money from her and another compulsively gambled a lot of it away. It’s another big-star MGM romantic comedy, and not exactly a classic. Debbie Reynolds and Glenn Ford pick their way through a travelogue story that seems made of leftovers from I Love Lucy, inventing flat-farce gimmicks to sex things up without offending the Production Code. What’s the movie most remembered for? It features the exotic concept car that became TV’s Batmobile.

The centerpiece of Scott Ora’s cluttered San Fernando Valley apartment is the 1939 Oscar his step-grandfather, the late lyricist Leo Robin, was presented for co-writing “Thanks for the Memory.” Sung by Bob Hope and Shirley Ross in the film “The Big Broadcast of 1938,” the trophy sits proudly on the piano where Robin worked on some of his biggest hits. The movie marked the comedian’s breakout role and Leo’s tune, co-written with frequent collaborator Ralph Rainger, soon became Hope’s theme song. It was Robin’s only Academy Award win out of a total of 10 nominations.
Over the course of 20 years, from 1934 (when the best original song category was introduced and he was nominated for “Love in Bloom”) through 1954, Robin, a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame who died in 1984 at the age of 84, earned 10 Oscar nominations (two in 1949 alone). Growing up, Carrie Fisher didn’t want to be an actress. But thanks to her role as Princess Leia in “Star Wars,” she became not only a movie star but an interstellar icon, a testament to the power of resistance. “Inside Star Wars” host Mark Ramsey joins us to talk about her life and legacy in the latest “Shoot This Now” podcast, which you can listen to on Apple or right here:
Fisher resisted the lure of Hollywood because she saw how the industry and the news media wounded her mother, Debbie Reynolds, after her father, Eddie Fisher, left her for Elizabeth Taylor.
But Carrie Fisher fulfilled her destiny to end up on-screen anyway. One early role was in Warren Beatty’s 1975 melancholy sex farce “Shampoo.” Ramsey tells us that on-set, Fisher quickly learned about the cold assessing eye of directors. And took careful notes.

Here’s a sobering thought as we turn toward the Golden Globes, wherein Adam McKay’s Vice is the most-nominated film: All of last year’s political movies combined have sold about as many tickets as one upper-middle horror hit.
In a year of partisan intensity, the top performer among movies with overt political themes was Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. A Globes nominee for best drama, that one had taken in about $48.3 million at the domestic box office as of midweek to rank a bit above No. 60 in the combined tally on Boxofficemojo.com.
Stacked somewhere underneath were Vice, Chappaquiddick, Rbg, Fahrenheit 11/9, Death of a Nation, Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer, The Front Runner and On the Basis of Sex. Add those to Lee’s film, and the total comes to roughly $117 million — a little less than Warner and its New Line unit took in with The Nun,...

They were two of the biggest female sex symbols of the 50s and early 60s, but Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor didn't consider each other competitors. "In many ways [they] were pitted against each other by the press," Charles Casillo writes in his new book, Marilyn Monroe: The Private Life of a Public Icon. "In reality, they barely knew each other, and the two had no animosity toward each other." Quite the opposite! Casillo writes of an incident in 1962, when 20th Century Fox was bleeding money on Liz's over-budgeted extravaganza Cleopatra. The studio simultaneously fired Marilyn for alleged absences from the set of her never-completed final film, the aptly titled Something's Gotta Give. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) Marilyn felt she was being sacrificed so Fox could save on her salary and spend it on finishing the bloated Egyptian epic. Two decades later, Liz revealed to a friend that she had reached...

Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds spent decades in the public eye. Nothing was off limits for the Hollywood mother-daughter duo. In interviews, stage shows, memoirs. and thinly veiled works of fiction such as “Postcards From the Edge,” Fisher and Reynolds dissected their tumultuous relationship, speaking candidly about everything from drug addiction to bad romances. What’s left to say?
“Everyone has read a million Carrie/Debbie stories. The only problem is, there are two million Carrie/Debbie stories,” said Todd Fisher, the other product of Reynolds’ ill-fated union with crooner Eddie Fisher.
So Todd Fisher decided to follow in his mother and sister’s footprints and write his own memories of growing up Reynolds with his new book “My Girls: A Lifetime with Carrie and Debbie.” His is a happier story. Carrie Fisher felt neglected by her father, a popular but reckless singer, who famously left Reynolds for Elizabeth Taylor.

In her latest single, Taylor Swift harkens back to one of Hollywood’s most epic love stories — for good reason.
