Do you remember the answer to the question, Who is Darkman? If not, Scream Factory invites you to revisit Sam Raimi’s first foray into superhero films with their brand new 4K Ultra HD release of 1990’s Darkman launching February 20th.
After being unable to obtain the rights to The Shadow, Raimi decided to mix traits from other popular crime fighters and classic Universal Monsters and pour them into the base of his own unique and tragic figure, Darkman. And this unique character is one who could disguise themselves as anyone they wanted to be.
With prospects like Bill Paxton and Gary Oldman interested in the lead, Raimi rolled the dice on virtual unknown Liam Neeson for his first ever starring role. Raimi also took a gamble on another longshot, his roommate Frances McDormand for the female lead after Julia Roberts bowed out due to personal reasons and became the Pretty Woman.

Director Sam Raimi’s film Darkman was first released in 1990, and in recent years Scream Factory has brought that movie and its direct-to-video sequels Darkman II: The Return of Durant and Darkman III: Die Darkman Die to Blu-ray. Last month, the company announced that they’ll be giving Darkman a 4K release on February 20th – and since then they’ve revealed that this release will include deleted scenes that weren’t on their previous Blu-ray release of the film, plus a fan commentary by Scare Me and Werewolves Within director (and Darkman superfan) Josh Ruben!

Horror for Christmas? Yes, I’m here to holly your jolly, deck your halls, and sacrifice your children to Krampus. What a merry holiday season indeed! Since our October vid focused on Halloween Specials, I figured the Spooky Christmas crossovers deserved some attention as well.
As a kid, my family did have Christmas watching traditions like most. We did Scrooged, A Christmas Story, Frosty, Charlie Brown, Garfield, Home Alone, Gremlins (Ahhhh it’s controversial), Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands…and my mom may have snuck in Black Christmas. She was and is a fan of Holiday-based Horror. Her favorite being My Bloody Valentine. All of this is totally normal. So, as you can probably guess, the tradition has continued.

The image of Santa Claus has been curated over the years to become wholesome and a symbol of happiness. In the past, he had been seen as a representation of Saint Nicholas or Father Christmas. In the 80s, he seemed to take a darker turn as horror filmmakers decided to use his visage to corrupt the viewer’s expectations. This sweet and gentle man would now be a killer. Multiple films decided to use this idea, and a whole sub-genre of horror films was born. Which ones are the best killer Santa movies?

Matthew Macfadyen is Gold Derby’s odds-on favorite to win his second consecutive Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy this year for playing the very tired Tom Wambsgans on HBO’s “Succession.” Fun fact: if he were to prevail against co-nominees Alexander Skarsgard, Alan Ruck and Nicholas Braun from “Succession” and F. Murray Abraham, Will Sharpe, Michael Imperioli and Theo James from “The White Lotus,” that would tie him with four other dramatic supporting actors on Emmy’s all-time list.
Stuart Margolin (“The Rockford Files” in 1979-80), Michael Conrad (“Hill Street Blues” in 1981-82), Larry Drake (“L.A. Law” in 1988-89) and Ray Walston (“Picket Fences” in 1995-96) all took home back-to-back Emmy Awards in the Best Drama Supporting Actor category during their shows’ tenures.

The film was originally meant to be an independent feature but was purchased by CBS – turning it into a made for television film. The film was released on Saturday October 24, 1981 – as part of their Halloween line-up – and was very well received by critics and audiences. Dark Night of the Scarecrow is credited to have started the horror subgenre of the killer scarecrow.

For months fans have speculated who would succeed the late Logan Roy (Brian Cox) as the head of Waystar Royco on HBO’s critically acclaimed drama “Succession.” In the end, after the GoJo deal was approved by the board — and with Shiv (Sarah Snook) acting as the deciding vote — the servile Tom Wambsgans came out on top. It’s no secret that the early 90s are not viewed as a primo time for horror movies. Post-the slasher burnout of the ’80s, pre-the resurrection of the genre thanks to Scream, it was a time where only the truly faithful went to the theaters to indulge in their favorite genre. And yet, we were given some memorable flicks that you almost certainly wouldn’t see in theaters today. Movies like Leprechaun, Man’s Best Friend, Body Parts, all graced the big screen, while today they’d almost certainly be sent right to VOD – maybe unless they were produced by Jason Blum. Another title that one can’t even picture getting a theatrical release?...

After a genre-defining golden age from 1978 to 1984, slashers continued to proliferate cinemas throughout the rest of the ’80s. By the time the ’90s rolled around, however, diminishing returns for franchises and newcomers alike made it seem as though the slasher well had run dry. But, like its bottomless repository of knife-wielding villains, the genre has proven that it can never be stopped. During the dry period before Scream revitalized slashers in 1996, savvy filmmakers began leaning into the campy elements as a response to dwindling audiences rooting for the villains rather than fearing them. Dr. Giggles was just what the doctor ordered.

Dr. Giggles was directed by Manny Coto, who rewrote the original screenplay by Graeme Whifler so extensively that Whifler was able to take the original script and get another movie out of it.. Dr. Giggles ended up with the following synopsis: It has been 35 years since the small town of Moorehigh discovered why Dr. Rendell kept losing his patients: he was ripping their hearts out in a twisted attempt to save his ailing wife. The townspeople stoned Rendell to death, but they never found the young son with the hideous giggle who helped his deranged father perform the operations. Now, over three decades later, Dr. Rendell’s son returns to gain revenge on Moorehigh’s residents, and he’s not shy about making house calls.

Sam Raimi's 1990 film "Darkman" may be classified as a superhero film, but it bears just as much genre resemblance to a 1930s Universal monster movie. The titular Darkman, Dr. Westlake (Liam Neeson), barely survives and explosion and facial acid bath, leaving only a small fraction of his skin left unburned. Fleeing the hospital, sans a lot of his face, Dr. Westlake begins operating out of a dank basement, working to construct a mask of synthetic skin that will allow him to appear as his did prior to the accident. Synthetic skin, you see was his field of expertise. His realistic mask, however, begins to melt and degrade if it's in direct sunlight for too long, hence his need to be a Darkman.
The aforementioned explosion/acid bath was done by goons working for the crime boss Robert G. Durant (an excellent Larry Drake) who was looking for some incriminating documents uncovered by Dr.

The nursery rhyme in Manny Coto’s 1992 slasher Dr. Giggles never caught on with horror fans like the “One, Two, Freddy’s Coming for You” song in the Nightmare on Elm Street films or “The Ballad of Harry Warden” in My Bloody Valentine. The film had better luck, but it still seems underrated, which is too bad, because Dr. Giggles is quite a bit of bloody fun that’s just waiting to be reappraised and celebrated.

Stay away from his house, he’s a doctor from hell.

Happy Halloween month! It’s time to theme the horror watchlists accordingly. We’re jumping back to the ‘80s for some quintessential Halloween horror for the first week of October.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to 1980s horror movies set on or around Halloween, excluding the Halloween franchise.
Here’s where you can stream these five 1980s Halloween titles this week, from kitchen sink cult gems to made-for-tv chillers!
Cemetery of Terror – AMC+, Shudder, Tubi
Rubén Galindo Jr.’s most prominent horror feature is the American-influenced Don’t Panic (available on Shudder), but the Halloween-centric Cemetery of Terror offers the most fun. A trio of college kids decides to impress their ladies by stealing a body from a morgue for a Halloween prank and party in an abandoned house. It happens to be the body of a serial killer, and reading an incantation from a book revives it.

Two years after winning his first Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy for his portrayal of Cory Ellison on Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” Billy Crudup has earned another TV academy notice for his work on the program’s second season. If he succeeds on this outing, he will follow Stuart Margolin (“The Rockford Files”), Michael Conrad (“Hill Street Blues”), Larry Drake (“L.A. Law”), Ray Walston (“Picket Fences”), Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) and Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) as the seventh man to win multiple supporting Emmys for a drama series. After Conrad, he would also be the second actor to receive this award for each of his show’s first two seasons.
Crudup has submitted the season two premiere episode of “The Morning Show” for Emmy consideration this year. In the installment, entitled “My Least Favorite Year,” Ellison is fired from his Uba network CEO job but soon...

“A storybook tale of corporate law offices in the City of Angels” is how The Hollywood Reporter described Steven Bochco’s new NBC drama series, L.A. Law, in October 1986.
The show, which centered on the lives of the partners, associates and staff of a fictional Los Angeles law firm, was co-created by Bochco and Terry Louise Fisher, a former L.A. County prosecutor who had served as a writer and producer on Cagney & Lacey. Bochco had already created a hit for NBC in Hill Street Blues, which won four consecutive drama series Emmys, and his success would continue with L.A. Law. In 1987, the show took home five Emmys for its debut season, including outstanding drama series. L.A. Bradley Whitford and John Lithgow have nine Emmys between them, including one each in Best Drama Supporting Actor. They’re in the running in the category this year for “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Perry Mason,” respectively, each with a chance to become the first person to win the award for two different shows.
Whitford took home his first Emmy in drama supporting actor for “The West Wing” in 2001 on his first of three straight bids. His other wins were for his guest roles on “Transparent” in 2015 and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2019, making him the first person to win the comedy and drama guest actor categories. Lithgow’s most recent victory was in drama supporting actor for “The Crown” in 2017. He has three comedy actor statuettes for “3rd Rock From the Sun” and two drama guest ones for “Amazing Stories” in 1986 and “Dexter” in 2010.

A sequel to NBC’s “L.A. Law” starring Blair Underwood is in development, but this time at ABC.
The project would see Underwood reprise his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins alongside a new crop of young lawyers.
Marc Guggenheim would write the series and executive produce alongside Ubah Mohamed, with Anthony Hemmingway directing. Jesse Bochco, the son of the late Steven Bochco (who co-created the original series), would also executive produce.
Here is the logline for the new version: The venerable law firm of McKenzie Brackman reinvents itself as a litigation firm specializing in only the most high-profile, boundary-pushing and incendiary cases. Blair Underwood reprises his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins, who has gone from idealistic to more conservative as he clashes with millennial JJ Freeman to decide the best path forward for the firm to effect political and legal change.

Last year, Bradley Whitford became the first man to win both drama guest and comedy guest actor categories following his victory for “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which came four years after his win in the latter for “Transparent.” He can carve out some more Emmy history this year with “Handmaid’s”: Competing in Best Drama Supporting Actor now, Whitford has a chance to be the first multiple winner for two shows in the category.
The actor already has a supporting statuette for “The West Wing” from 2001, prevailing on the first of three consecutive bids for the seminal drama. He hasn’t been nominated there since 2003, and the category itself is not as friendly to repeat winners as some other ones at the Emmys. Six people have won drama supporting actor more than once — but all for one show:
1. Stuart Margolin, “The Rockford Files” (1979-80)
2. Michael Conrad, “Hill Street Blues” (1981-82)

Jonathan Banks has one of the coolest Emmy records and one of the most dubious ones. He is the only person to be nominated for three shows — “Wiseguy,” “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” — in Best Drama Supporting Actor, and he also shares the record, with Ed Begley Jr., for the most nominations without a win in the category at 0-6. If he doesn’t take home the gold this year on a potential (un)lucky seventh bid, then he’ll have that unfortunate record all to himself.
Banks tied the “St. Elsewhere” star’s record last year after losing to “Game of Thrones'” Peter Dinklage, who bagged a record-setting fourth statuette, breaking the tie he shared with Banks’ “Breaking Bad” co-star Aaron Paul. Banks and Begley are two of five men with six nominations — the second most in the category behind Dinklage’s eight — but the other three, Will...

Peter Dinklage feels like a mortal lock to take home his record-breaking fourth Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy for “Game of Thrones,” but his victory may not be as assured if you go by recent Emmy history. If he does prevail again this year, it’d be his second straight win, but no one has been able to defend their crown in this category in 23 years.
The last person to win two drama supporting actor Emmys in a row was Ray Walston (“Picket Fences”), who triumphed in 1995 and ’96. Since then, the only people to earn multiple Emmys in this category have been Dinklage and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”). Paul accomplished it first, winning his second trophy in 2012 to go with his 2010 one; he nabbed a third in 2014, becoming the most awarded person in this category. Dinklage tied him at three wins last year, but his were all non-consecutive as well,...

Jonathan Banks holds a pretty cool Emmy record: He’s the only person to be nominated for three different shows in Best Drama Supporting Actor. But he might add a less fun one this year: He could tie the record for most nominations without a win in the category.
The dubious honor is currently held by Ed Begley Jr. who went 0-6 for “St. Elsewhere” from 1983-88. Begley is tied with Will Geer (“The Waltons”), Bruce Weitz (“Hill Street Blues”) and Jimmy Smits (“L.A. Law”) at six nominations, but the other three have all won.
At 0-5, Banks earned his first nomination back in 1989 for “Wiseguy”; Larry Drake (“L.A. Law”) won. His next one would come 24 years later for playing Mike Ehrmantraut on “Breaking Bad,” but he fell to Bobby Cannavale (“Boardwalk Empire”). His last three bids have been for reprising Mike on the “Breaking Bad” prequel spin-off “Better Call Saul...

Everyone knows that the Emmys loves repeat winners (see: Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ six consecutive wins for “Veep”), but the TV academy did a different type of rubber-stamping at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards over the weekend: choosing the same show but different performers in the guest acting categories. Might this spread-the-wealth mindset translate to the main Emmy ceremony?
First, let’s be clear, it’s difficult and rare to repeat in the guest category for the same show, let alone get nominated again unless you do another eligible guest stint. Last year’s Best Drama Guest Actor champ Gerald McRaney (“This Is Us”) was trying to be the first to win the category twice for the same role, but he lost to his co-star Ron Cephas Jones, who was nominated in supporting last year. On the actress side, Samira Wiley (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), who was also up in supporting last year,...

Happy Horrordays, Boils and Ghouls! ‘Tis the season to be…murdered, perhaps? Okay, I’ll stop with The Cryptkeeper puns because: A) I’m terrible at them, and B) see A. But it is the season when we focus on blood dripping from the tinsel-laden tree, and there are more than enough solid to great Xmas goodies to help cope with a visit from that racist aunt who’s pleasantly surprised Idris Elba speaks so eloquently. (Don’t pretend you don’t have one.) Mining the Vault of Horror comics, HBO’s Tales from the Crypt delivered their holiday cheer in Season One’s second episode, And All Through the House. If you’re looking to get the kiddies into horror but they still have an affinity for Old Saint Nick, this is not the place to start.

When Sam Raimi directed the original Darkman back in 1990, it was an impressive feat, especially for the time: he created a big-screen superhero out of whole cloth—part comic book, part Universal monster, part Gaston Leroux, part ’80s action movie. It’s the kind of movie that should have launched a host of sequels—or, even better, a weekly series—but because of Sam Raimi’s own difficulties in making the film and because of the box office climate of the time, it didn’t happen. Not right away, at least.
Unwilling to let a potentially lucrative property disappear, Universal did put a pair of direct-to-video sequels into production in 1995. Though Raimi did not return to direct, he did remain on board as an executive producer, with directing duties on both movies turned over to Bradford May. Before tackling the Spider-Man trilogy, Master of Horror Sam Raimi gave the world his own unique brand of superhero storytelling with his 1990 neo-noir/horror/romance mash-up, Darkman, which paid homage to the larger-than-life characters and worlds of comic properties like Dick Tracy and Batman, as well as the tortured titular character in The Phantom of the Opera. A wildly hyperkinetic tale of revenge and loss, Darkman may not be Raimi’s most polished work, but I truly feel that given where he was at that time in his career, and the budget he had to play with, Darkman is easily one of Raimi’s most ambitious efforts (certainly right up there with the first two Evil Dead films).
One of my favorite aspects to Darkman (besides Larry Drake as the absolutely despicable crime boss Durant) has always been the film’s incredible effects, which were designed and created by Tony Gardner of Alterian,...

[Guest authors Christopher Lombardo and Jeff Kirschner of Really Awful Movies share their diagnosis of healthcare horror movies with Daily Dead readers.] When the Us was overhauling its healthcare system, much to-do was made about so-called “death panels,” government committees who would decide who lives and dies based on asset allocation. As far as healthcare horrors are concerned, it turns out that playing God is very real, but luckily only in film and Sarah Palin’s fright-filled imagination.
